>> turn them on. 30 degrees this morning. how about the heat indices? 42 at noon. a mix of clouds and sunshine today. high, thin clouds working their way in from the south. by 5:00, 43. with highs to the mid to upper 40s. thick in the carolinas and down in southern virginia. we've got the high, thin ones around here giving us a little halo around the moon during the overnight. there is not going to be any rain or snow from them. temps in the teens. in our suburbs to the west. we've got 23 la plata. 22 in gaithersburg. 27 in maryland. our high temp with the sun and clouds mix, we'll be in the mid to upper 40s. we might get to 50 in one or two spots south of town. >> the cold hits you when you head outside. here's what it looked like overnight on the clara barton parkway. icy conditions between macarthur boulevard and chain bridge. it caused several accidents.

i was on the phone with park police last night. because of that, they had to shut it down. you should be ok. but i still say keep your speed limits down and give yourself some extra time this morning. we'll go over to some maps. there's no problem to report on the beltway. we're going to zoom in first to 95 on the northbound side right before quantico, an accident in the left lane. expect delays in that area and then again as you try to get across the occoquan river up north, no problems beyond that, we'll go over to springfield live right now on the northbound side of i-95 looking good. just the volume. once you're on to 395, the earlier accident before the 14th street bridge has been cleared but left a slowdown for you. let's go over to college park. here, everything is fine. on the outer loop after branch avenue closer to allentown road, there have been some debris cleanup along the right side of the road. coming up, we'll go back around the area roadways at 6:11. andrea and mike? >> today, the virginia tech community will say a sad good-

bye to officer deriek crouse. >> he was the campus police officer gunned down last thursday on campus. governor bob mcdonnell is going to speak at today's funeral. >> surae chinn is live in our satellite center with a preview and new comments from the family of the suspected gunman. surae? >> reporter: officer crouse leaves behind a wife and five children. one teenage son and four stepsons. an entire nation is mourning including the blacksburg and the hokey nation and a brotherhood of law enforcement who will be traveling from around the commonwealth and across the country. student, staff, faculty will be gathering once again on campus. they gathered on the drill field after 39-year-old virginia tech police officer deriek crouse was gunned down last thursday. police say the shooter, 22- year-old part-time radford student ross ashley, killed officer crouse. he was making a routine traffic stop before turning the gun on himself. crouse's wife told the roanoke times that they exchanged text

messages. officer crouse texted "love you lots" an hour before the shooting. tina crouse says their family is shattered. >> the only thing that would bring closure is to know why. >> i can't even wrap my mind around that. i can't understand the concept of why someone would want to walk up and shoot a police officer. for no apparent reason. >> reporter: new developments, the family of ross ashley, the shooter, has offered their condolences and prayers to the crouse family. it was an unsigned statement sent to "the associated press." they are also asking for privacy themselves and they said they would not make any additional comments. back to you, mike, andrea? >> surae chinn live in our satellite center this morning. d.c. police tell 9news a standoff in northwest washington is over this morning. but they haven't exactly told us what and how it began. it did begin yesterday when u.s. park police tried to pull

over a car that ended in a crash. two people in the car ran into a home along gallatin street northwest near north capitol street. they barricaded themselves inside the home and held police at bay for nearly 12 hours. two park police officers were hurt in their crash. their injuries are minor. vdot has new overhead signs that go online. they won't make your commute any better but at least you'll know how long you're going to be stuck in traffic. seven signs went live this morning at 5:00 a.m. three of them northbound 95 south of the beltway. two are on southbound 395 and then two more are on southbound 95. there are similar signs, you've seen them along i-66 and i-95 in maryland. after five months in captivity, a virginia teenager is back with his family this morning. 14-year-old kevin lunnsman doesn't have injuries except for a few bruises. he and his mother were kidnapped five months ago in the philippines. his mother was set free in

chilly monday morning. some high clouds mixing in with the clearness out there. partly cloudy. 34 degrees. light winds today south- southeast, 5 miles per hour or less. 42 by noon. this afternoon's highs mid to upper 40s. monika, over to you. we'll take a look at a map on the northbound side of i-95 before quantico. earlier accident was left. you've got it again across the occoquan river. more on area roadways coming up in my next report at 6:17. andrea and mike? >> thanks, monika. today, the supreme court could get involved in the controversial illegal immigration law in arizona. that's one of the stories making news now at 6:11. arizona lawmakers want to be able to enforce parts of the law which lower courts have blocked. one of those provisions requires police to question a person's immigration status if the officer suspects the person is here illegally. the justice department disagrees saying enforcing immigration laws is a federal job. occupy protestors in

oakland, california, plan on shutting down that city's ports again. oakland's mayor is begging them not to do it saying the port generates 73,000 jobs. an an truly tradition sunday, the blessing of the pets. dozens of pets and their owners lined up in new york including some nypd canine officers as well. mike? >> thanks, an adra. making sure your kids stay safe when they're online is a hard job for any parent but our next guest has three simple steps to follow to protect your child. lesli is senior vice president of children's media at tbs. glad you're here. my son spends so much time online with tbs programming, he loves it. you have three steps on trying to make things secure because it is a dangerous place, the internet. >> it is. we have to protect our children. the first step is use both parental controls, even your iphone has parental controls. make sure you're supervising what they're doing and allowing them to go to web sites which

are safe for children. >> tip number one is secure it. do you go into -- do that on the site? is it your own device? >> start your device. even the iphone has parental controls. if you're giving your child a device to block them from being able to use other things that you don't want them to have access to. particularly if you're giving them a device for permanently, you want to sweep that device and make sure that it doesn't have access to the internet, for example so that they can roam or you might want to block out youtube. >> that can be dangerous content. >> kids can buy things by accident. that's important. >> you would want to sweep it of your own personal information or your credit card information if you're actually giving a device for the holidays to your children. >> one of the other suggestions you brought up was setting limits. what does that ?eeb. >> setting limits in terms of the amount of media they use. the amount of time they're in screens. there are more screens in our children's lives now. we have to think about their

screen experience cumulatively. set the amount of time per day. you might want to say when they can use it, when they can't. for example, at mealtimes, you might want to say no screens at mel times. set the limit. in the car, do you want screens or no screens? these are personal decisions parents need make. it is important to set the limits when you give your children the device. >> there are so many applications that you can choose whether it is your mobile device or hooking things up to your personal computer at home, there has to be a way to weed through things. >> you're right. parents are overwhelmed by the number of choices. we tell parents to think about the child's age and stage. and choose apps that are age appropriate for your child. you also want to read reviews. read what other parents are saying about the app. try it yourself before you have your children use it. you want them to be challenged so that they can learn but at the same time, you don't want them to be frustrated because it is too difficult for them. >> lesli, thank you so much. recap, secure your device, set

by 5:00 p.m., we're back down to 43. ing if you like to run outside, you'll need the warmer weather gear. 21 in gaithersburg. stuff that's going to keep you warm is what i'm trying to say. 25 college park. it is definitely cold out there. but not as cold as manassas, leesburg and lovettsville. toward the south to belvoir, 22. down to 20 in reston. at reagan national, we fall into 30 degrees. you've got all of the cement and asphalt, also the warmer waters of the potomac. east-northeast wind at 5. it is coming in. the warmth is coming in off the river right now. the dew point sitting at 24. the cold, it is out on the rockies. got some teens here. this is nothing crazy. it is not arctic cold. for december, we're in pretty good shape. the arctic air bottles up in canada. heaviest ones are down in florida here and georgia into the carolinas. with some of the clouds, you see how they're streaming north and northeast.

that is what we're dealing with today. so, at times, it will be partly sunny. other times, might be a thin overcast. i think in general, it is going to be a nice, quiet day with a slight warming trend over the next few days. today, 47. average high is 48. we'll be right where we should be back in the 20s and 30s tonight again with light winds, tomorrow, 52. northwest winds 5 to 10. for wednesday, 53 degrees. you like to fish? it will be cold you but the bay should be pretty flat. rain showers late thursday and thursday night into early friday. chillier for the weekend as temps drop into the 40s. monika samtani is in. how's thats blitz of incidents doing? >> it is medium. we have a few incidents. we had icy conditions this morning. but mainly right now, it is just the slow rush hour traffic you have to deal with. i'm going to start off with frederick. let's take a live look, southbound on i-270, overall, the delays, route 85 down

>> and now an altercation. this is the last thing you want to see. the benches clear. >> check out the mess this altercation turns into. several players were seen throwing punches during the fight between crosstown rivals. each team suspended four players. we expect to hear from a few of them later today. in action yesterday, virginia tech hosted norfolk state. sophomore jerrell eddie put up a career high 24 points including five three-pointers. hokies win 73-60. ewe there are no plans to strip brewers brawn of his national mvp award. espn is reporting the outfielder tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs or at least one of them. he told our partners at "usa today," the as a result bs. a spokesman says there are unusual circumstances which will indeed clear his name. knock sports reports brawn didn't test positive for a performance-enhancer but some other illegal substances.

seminary road. if you're planning to head around to 66, you have a bit of slow traffic as well in the manassas and centreville area. that's indent-free coming over to fairfax. no problems to report across the american legion bridge. but right now, i have a commuter alert. a heads up for beltway drivers. a lane will be closed during the day today on the inner loop in alexandria. starting at 9:30, the left lane will be closed from the eisenhower connector to telegraph road. it will stay closed until 2:30 p.m. that's also that crews could do work related to the wilson bridge project. there will be daytime work in the area all week long and overnight, all week, you'll lose a lane on the outer loop. that work will begin every night at 9:00. they will have variable message signs, they're removing the barrier walls, they're putting up the overhead signs. with the bicycle and the pedestrian path, it is so much better. that original bridge was in 1961. could not carry the load that it carries today. a little bit of suffering but

we're going to be ok in the end. >> thanks, monika. >> speaking of congestion, you can expect more on capitol hill today because occupy d.c. protestors are marching from their encampment at mcpherson square over to both the democratic and republican headquarters. the republicans are on -- where is it here? >> first street. >> republicans are on first street southeast. the democrats are nearby at south capitol and d and the march is going to begin at 3:00 this afternoon. expect congestion in that area. flags across the commonwealth will be at half staff in honor of officer deriek crouse. he's the virginia tech police officer gunned down in the line of duty, today, there will be a funeral for officer crouse. surae chinn is live in our satellite center with a preview. >> andrea, it will be a tough, emotional day on campus where folks will be gathering. the funeral will be set for 2:00 this afternoon.

thousands are expected. meanwhile, the widow of officer crouse has mentioned to the roanoke times that their family is shattered. they're devastated and so is law enforcement, the family, brotherhood there and the hokey nation. they'll be gathering once again today because of tragedy and to honor the life of virginia tech police officer 39-year-old deriek crouse. the funeral will be held this afternoon besides governor bob mcdonnell and other political leaders, there will be a large contingent of officers who will be arriving. faculty, staff and students gathered last week here for a vigil on the drill field. thursday's events reminded students of the terror of the 2007 massacre but also of coming together. >> i'm proud of everyone that showed up. i'm proud i live in a community where everyone comes out and they support each other and everyone is there for each other. >> part of a family. as soon as any tragedy hurts anybody, you feel like it is in you to go help them.
