hello, thank you for joining us. i'm j.c. hayward. the officer gunned down on virginia tech's campus last week will be laid to rest today. funeral services for officer deriek crouse will begin in two hours on the blacksburg campus. our surae chinn has more.

>> reporter: students, faculty and staff are gathering on camp us to honor the life of 39- year-old virginia tech police officer deriek crouse. his family is trying to come to grips with the unspeakable tragedy. >> i was like it can't be him. because you know, if you make it through iraq, you can make it through anything. >> a large legion of law enforcement are expected to attend from across the country. police say the shooter, 22- year-old part-time radford student ashley gunned down the officer who was making a routine traffic stop. >> do not leave this room until you're told. >> the university went on lockdown until officers learned the shooter turned the gun on himself. the hokey nation reminded once again of tragedy, remembering the terror of the 2007 massacre that took 33 lives, including the gunman. but they also know how quickly the campus comes together in times like these. >> i'm proud i live in a community where everyone comes out and they support each other. >> the shooter's family has

offered condolences to the crouse family. the officer's widow tells "the roanoke times" her family is shattered. her last text from her husband right before the shooting said i love you lots. the iraq veteran leaves behind not only his wife but his teenage son and four stepsons. >> the only thing that would bring closure is to know why. >> i can't even wrap my mind around that. >> reporter: surae chinn, 9news now. you will be able to watch the funeral live by going to our web site, wusa9.com. the funeral begins at 2::00 p.m. several alleged victims of former penn state coach jerry sandusky are expected to come face-to-face with him tomorrow. the alleged victims are scheduled to testify in a preliminary hearing. at least ten people now say that sandusky sexually abused them over the past few decades. sandusky was re-arrested last

week after two more alleged victims came forward. bruce leshan will be the only local reporter inside that courtroom. he's live from penn state and he will be filing reports tonight beginning at 5:00 p.m. occupy protesters out west are trying to shut down some of the largest ports in the country. they're marching on the port of oakland, along with those in anchorage, seattle, portland, los angeles, and san diego. protestors successfully shut down oakland's port last month. they cite a dispute between some port operators and longshoremen as a reason for the blockade. the action is considered the occupy movement's most traumatic gesture since police raids shut down most camps. occupy protestors will likely cause some congestion on capitol hill today. protestors are marching from their encampment at mcpherson square and they're going to the

headquarters of both republicans and democrats. the g.o.p. is on first street southeast at c street. the democrats are located at south capital street and d street. the march will begin about 3:00 this afternoon. president obama is meeting with the iraqi prime minister at the white house today. the two leaders will have a lot to talk about with the deadline for u.s. leaving iraq in about three weeks. tara mergener reports from the white house. >> president obama sat down with iraq's prime minister at the white house to talk strategy. the two leaders are discussing security concerns and how iraq will maintain stability without the help of u.s. military forces come the first of the year. hundreds of u.s. troops in armored vehicles are streaming out of iraq every day. many of the nearly 6,000 who remain are packing up three u.s. bases. one officer tells cbs news the

massive logistical operation is going smoothly. >> for me and my soldiers, it gives me great pride to be able to be a part of something as big as this. >> reporter: the deadline for u.s. forces to be out of iraq is december 31st. president obama wanted to leave some troops there to help with training but the deal fell apart when iraq refused to provide the soldiers with legal immunity. sunday, the military officially turned over control of a base south of baghdad to iraqi security forces. taking down the american flag is another sign the change of power is on track. >> right now, we're on schedule to be able to make it out of here before christmas. >> nato will stop its training mission there at the end of the month, leaving iraqi security forces to maintain control on their own. tara mergener for cbs news, the white house. the troop withdrawal will mark the end of a nine-year war. at the height of the war in 2007, there were 170,000 u.s. troops serving in iraq.

well, the nation's highest court will rule on arizona's controversial immigration law. arizona wants the supreme court to allow the states to begin enforcing the law. lower courts blocked the law's measure from going into effect. among those provisions, one that requires police to question a person's immigration status if officers suspect he's in the country illegally. the justice department says regulating immigration is the federal government's job and not the state's. well, it may be christmas but you can expect some fireworks next weekend in leesburg, virginia. it is another controversy over a holiday display on the courthouse lawn. a group of local atheists will put up the flying spaghetti monster. they say it is a critique of conventional religions. and it has made stops nationwide. leesburg city counselors aren't so sure, allowing it is a good

idea. we're hoping to learn more today about a suspect who held police at bay and a family captive for hours in northwest washington. u.s. park police say that it started after the man refused to pull over for a traffic stop. one officer suffered minor injuries, struggling with the suspect. authorities say that the man ran into a home on first street and gallatin street northwest. six children and five adults were inside. we spoke with neighbors who were forced to stay inside their homes as the siege unfolded. >> yeah, we couldn't leave the house. there were helicopters flying around. it was directly across the freet? our house. >> the suspect eventually gave up. the family was allowed to return to their homes. no one was injured. coming up on 9news now, why a home improvement chain is at the center of a controversy. involving a reality show.

big brother is watching drivers on i-95 in virginia. signs that give driver's estimated travel times debut today. they will be in operation from 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. weekdays and 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on weekends. the signs track cell phone signals to determine exactly how fast cars are moving. and they use that information to estimate travel times. get ready to pay more to drive on the dulles toll road and the dulles greenway because tolls on both roads will be going up on january 1st. drivers travelling from the beltway to the end of the greenway will pay an extra 55 cents reach way.

now, that's more than $280 a year for people to make the round trip each day. some of the money will be used to fund metro's expansion to dulles airport. after five months in captivity, a virginia teenager is back with his family. 14-year-old kevin lundsman doesn't have any injuries except for a few bruises. he and his mother were kidnapped five months ago in the philippines. his mother was set free in october. the islamic militants count lundsman but he made a break for it friday and he wandered around the jungle for two days before villagers found him. friends back home in campbell county, virginia, are relieved! >> it was the greatest day. i had just pray and prayed, god, all i want for christmas is kevin to come home. >> we missed. >> lot and we're thankful and glad you're coming home and we can't wait to see you.

>> kevin should be back home in about a week. the lowe's home improvement chain pulled its ads from a reality television show about american muslims. the move came after the florida family association complained that tlc's all-american muslim was propaganda to lied what it calls islam's "clear and present danger" to american liberties and traditional values. the california state senator says he is considering a boycott of lowe's as well as legislative action if the company does not reverse its decision. when we come back, the organization that has spent half a century helping people get back to work. and howard will have our forecast. >> j.c., good thing the winds have been very light because temperatures are still way down here at the noon hour. we saw some readings in the 30s. we'll take a break with a look at the beltway temps.

job opportunities for their children. at the time, people with severe disabilities had limited work in living options. today, limited resources is still thriving. i recently visited their headquarters in arlington, virginia. >> each year, linden resources employees and provides vocational services for more than 250 people with disabilities. they own two successful commercial businesses. a full-service printing company and a warehousing facility. >> while we are happy to provide paychecks and help people ensure that they're able to meet their financial obligations, we really enjoy all of those other aspects that come along with employment. >> for people with disabilities, a job is a means to pride and greater independence. linden resources serves the needs of people with severe intellectual and physical

disabilities, including wounded warrior veterans. >> 28-year-old megan greenwood served four years in the air force as a medic. when she returned from iraq, she suffered from post- traumatic stress. >> i am considered a disabled vet because of ptsd and depression and migraines as well. and they do hinder me from working sometimes. >> linden is strongly committed to employment needs of students. they work with local school systems, the virginia department of rehabilitation services, and local community service boards. >> it is absolutely satisfying to see someone come in with low sense of self-esteem or a low self-confidence to be able to gain some skills and any one of our many lines of business and then have an opportunity to go out and to work. >> megan is a great example of someone who has transitioned

some of us do. for those who do like snow, won't happen for awhile. slim, slim, like 2% chance saturday. don't hang your hat on that. this weather pattern is not good for snow. here's something to tell you though for the afternoon. it is chilly. clouds around this morning. high, thin ones but with the lower sun angle this time of year, any bit of sun we don't get hurts us. we'll be lucky to get to the mid-40s this afternoon. we might make upper 40s this morning. thin clouds were thick of you to do a number for us. 39 by the time we get to 9:00. you can see the clouds streaming in this morning into the afternoon. there are a lot of breaks up here. we're still partly to mostly sunny, just kind of chilly. this morning, one of the coldest mornings of the season, get down to 16 in frederick, 18 in martinsburg. 19 for manassas and gaithersburg. national got to 29. only spot that held it to 30 or better was right on the bay. water temperatures, keeping them a little bit milder. right now, low to mid-40s southern maryland where easton

is 45. north and west, we got 30s from hagerstown to martinsburg to winchester to luray. everybody there mid-30s. cumberland is only 32. here in d.c., it is 41 with light winds and pretty healthy barometer. pretty steady most of the morning. dew points are in the 20s. the air has dried out here. all to the southern u.s., we've got storms in the u.s. it is going to snow outside the mountains of los angeles and san diego today into arizona, new mexico. in the southeast, we've been watching all of this rain. this has been producing the clouds for us. look at the heavy rain florida up through georgia and south carolina. for us, all we're seeing, the high, thin clouds streaming up to the north and east. showers west of chicago at this hour, northwest of chicago. we don't have any significant weather heading our way for the next few days. our future cast shows us fairly quiet, high and dry here. a couple of showers along the coastal areas of the carolinas as we head toward tomorrow morning. tomorrow, noon, looks fine. tomorrow evening looks fine.

another quiet night. then the warmer breeze starts to come back in here by thursday. we'll keep temperatures warming i think by then to maybe near 60. today, mid-40s. tonight, we're back in the 20s and 30s. light winds today and tonight. tomorrow, 52. northwest winds 5. maybe 10 miles per hour. wednesday, 53. as we head toward thursday, as we look at the seven-day forecast, you'll notice the milder temperatures with highs near 60. late showers possible into thursday night before we clear out and cool down again for the weekend. we're going to the kitchen. got some scallops with a twist for you when 9news now at noon returns.
