from nearby radford university for reasons that are still unclear. annie hong has more. >> reporter: bruce, hundreds of fellow law enforcement officials came out to pay tribute to one of their own. hundreds gathered on the virginia tech campus in blacksburg for the funeral of 3-year-old officer derek krause. he was remembered as a diehard pittsburgh steelers fan and a friend they could count on. many of those who came were law enforcement officials, reminded of the dangers they face every day as they serve and protect. >> for us, it is who we are. it's what we do. it's what derek did. >> virginia governor bob mcdonald spoke with krause's commitment to being a lifelong public servant who also served in the army in iraq. for the last four years he went to work here protexting the citizens of the state and the

students and faculty and the administration of virginia tech. >> reporter: krause was making a traffic stop last thursday when police say a 22-year-old student at a nearby college walked up to his cruise and shot him. the shooter, 22-year-old ross ashley, killed himself soon after. krause is survived by his wife along with his five children and stepchildren. >> the sacrifices derek was willing to make, are idle words on parchment. thank you to the family for the amazing sacrifice of love that you have given to your fellow 8 millian virginiaians. officer krause joined the police force in 2007, six months after the mass shooting according to the school's website, and police are still looking for a motive in thursday's shooting. back to you. thanks annie. students at virginia tech have now raised more than $65,000 for the officer's

family. we have more on the news from reston. there is new information since our first report at 5:00. unfortunately a man who was shot in the head in the incident has now died. the shooting happened in an apartment complex in the 1500 block of cameron crescent drive. police are looking for a black pickup truck with three men inside. it happened late this afternoon in reston. turning now to the latest on the sex scandal at penn state university. tomorrow for the first time we will hear publicly from the alleged victims in the penn state child sex abuse scandal. ruth will be the only washington reporter in the packed courtroom. bruce joins us now from the court house. how many alleged victims are we expecting to hear from? >> at least five. jerry sandusky will be here at the courthouse and so will the young man who he allegedly abused. the attorney for victim number

one tells me that this teenager is nervous but ready. >> workers prepared for the arrival of hundreds of reporters, photographers and satellite trucks. >> reporter: the road is closed off to us which i don't believe is right. >> reporter: camera crews are parked in front of the home where sandusky allegedly abused many of the boys during sleepovers in the basement. slate mcglothlin represents victim number one who will be among at least five alleged victims to testify. >> i think it is going to be compelling. i think it is going to be something when well hear it they are going to have their minds made up that this young man is telling the truth and i think he is going to be a very, very good witness. >> reporter: sandusky allegedly performed oral sex on the boy at least 20 times when the child was 11 or 12 years old and at least one time had the boy perform oral sex on him. sandusky's lawyer haslett the

former coach speak twice to the media. which experts say is either crazy or crazy like a fox. >> not on one occasion, but on two different occasions, mr. sandusky give cates as to whether he was attracted to young boys. >> i think the way jerry described it the kids with whom he showered were basically like his own kids. >> reporter: sandusky's lawyer will likely get less than one day to respond to more than a month of the worst kind of publicity. >> i think he should ask questions wise and pick the ones he wants to ask. i don't think the judge is going to give him further discretion to ask questions for hours on end. you get a sense of the scene here the trucks the satellite trucks now be ago loud in to set up for the hearing that begins at 8:30 tomorrow morning. one person we do not expect to see here is former penn state head coach joe paterno. he fell this weekend, broke his

adoctor is facing charges. he was selling oxycontin, morphine and other medications on the street, using his office in triangle. dow was taken into custody just last week. police estimate he was distributing 8000 oxycontin on the street's weekly without prescription and his in cash only. a pair of montgomery county lawmakers are proposing a new law cracking down on so-called flash mobs. this comes after two incidents where a large group of young people entered a store and then started helping themselves to items without pay. instead of misdemeanors the new legislation would allow prosecutors to charge them with stealing hundreds of dollars of merchandise. one of the backers of the bill insists he is not overreact and go he says other lawmakers share his concerns. people feel as though they can just run into a store and grab whatever they want and take it and run out. no fear or thoughts of what the

as the u.s. continues its withdrawal from iraq. president obama sat down with the iraqi prime minister today to discuss the exit. troops are scheduled to be out by the end of the year. u.s. military officials

university of maryland, it also means their final exam is a bit more hands on. kristen fisher caught up with some of the finalists of the university's hovercraft competition. >> we are team cool blue. >> meet cool blue, one of the student built hovercrafts that made the finals. >> i can tell you we were in the lan until 2:00 a.m. last night. so going on with very little sleep. teams frantically trying to get things to work. >> one of cool blue's rivals the quarter pounder with cheese is also struggling. >> that struggles, the problem solving. that is the whole point to this competition. that is the culmination of an entire semester's worth of work. >> they love it. that the majority of them do not fully work. what they are asked to do is to decide a hovercraft that is

able to locate a pedestal, fire a pay load and exit traffic. >> reporter: these teams have been competing throughout the weekend. the winning team will get 500 bucks and bragging rights. some teams never make it past the first stage. >> definitely there is a feeling of disappointment. >> reporter: others finish better than expected, like this team that's still in high school. but every team is ending the semester with a better understanding of what it takes to be an engineer. >> feeling that you are put into groups and are told to complete a task in a certain amount of time. >> reporter: at the university of maryland, kristen fisher, 9news now. the competition is still going on once it is over we will most the winners on our website, wusa 9.com. bruce and i's biggest scientific achievement is putting the egg in some of it.
