a mother's rage. tonight a local woman loses her temper costing her the christmas presents for her six young kids. >> now she's apologizing for her behavior. our ken molestina is live outside prince george's county police headquarters with the story you'll only see on 9. ken, what happened? >> reporter: well, she showed up here. that 27-year-old mother came here to prince george's county police headquarters because this is the spot where the toys for tots folks were giving those toys away. but it's what happened after she got here that put her in a tough spot. mahogany jackson is a 27-year-old single mother of six. her children range in age between 2 and 10. she's even got a pair of twins. she has no steady income, however, and only way to ensure her kids had gifts this holiday season is to accept toys given out by the toys for tots campaign. >> i received the e-mail from toys for tots to tell me that i can pick up toys from the police station on sunday. >> reporter: her problems began soon after she got in

line. jackson claims her cell phone was stolen from her and that officers brushed her off when she tried to report it. the 27-year-old mother admits she then made a seen yelling and acting out. >> my voice did raise, yes, it did. >> reporter: her temper then raised so much that she was asked to leave without any toys. as her tree at home sits empty of any gifts, she's reflecting on her behavior. >> i do apologize for getting loud an belligerent about my cell phone. i think i could have handled it in a different situation. if you accept my apology, you don't have to accept it from me. you don't have to forgive me for what i did, you don't have to overlook what i did. just please don't do this to my children. that's all i ask. >> reporter: 9news took that apology to dawn stem. she is the volunteer coordinator for toys for tots. >> we still have her bag of toys. i'm happy to give those toys over for her because at the end of the day she is correct in saying that the kids should not

be disadvantaged in being able to get their toys for christmas. >> reporter: all right. back out live here , folks. this is that bag of toys that dawn stem was talking about. we have helped out in this situation because dawn who is that volunteer for toys for tots asked us to give the family this bag of toys. she said she has hundreds of other toys that she needed to get to some families tonight so she asked us, she asked 9news to give this bag of toys to that family. so it looks like in this case the apology definitely went a long way. back to you guys. >> all right, ken. thank you. new at 11:00, police are looking for the suspect wanted in a double shooting in the district. it happened in the 2500-block of 14th street. that is in northeast. emergency crews took both of the victims to the hospital after that shooting. no word on their condition or the description of the person they're looking for. republican presidential candidate newt gingrich today says that a new poll has him leading among republican voters in virginia. >> the problem is, right now

gingrich does not appear to have enough signatures to get on the ballot in virginia and he's got less than 24 hours to get them. as matt jablow tells us, gingrich was in alexandria tonight leading a last minute signature drive. >> reporter: with only one day left to get on the ballot in virginia, republican presidential candidate newt gingrich was rallying the troops. >> i have one opponent that is barack obama. >> reporter: and searching for signatures tot at the key bridge marriot in alexandria. >> so with your help, we're going to get on the ballot. >> reporter: gingrich needs at least 10,000 signatures in virginia, and at least 400 in each of virginia's 11 congressional districts to be on virginia's primary election ballot in march. >> once again we're going to disappoint because tomorrow we're going to turn in vastly more signatures than you need. >> reporter: gingrich does not appear to be voting is the gay vote. one week after en raging the gay

community by saying that being homosexual is in part a matter of choice. >> i believe it's a matter of genetics and environment. >> reporter: he called gay marriage a temporary admiration and told the gay man he should support president obama. >> he said you should support obama. >> reporter: he stayed clear of the gay issue entirely and did not take questions from reporters. >> i like him. he's genuine. >> reporter: people we spoke with who attended the event said they were comfortable with his position on homosexuality. >> i think given the fact that his sister has come out and is gay and he loves his sister and accepts her for who she is, he seems to be accepting of homosexuals. we should all be. everybody has their own perception about it. >> reporter: he's also conducting a signature drive in the district where republicans need to submit at least 296 signatures by january 4th to be on the ballot. >> thank you.

this man is accused of locking a toddler inside of an apartment. now he's locked away for alleged child neglect. they arrested anthony vincent after they found his daughter inside an apartment yesterday. the child was surrounded by filth. severely malnourished and wearing only a sweater. officers think the little girl was left alone for at least a day. they found her after the little girl's mom called the police from a hospital bed worried about her child. a neighbor who didn't want to show her face on camera says the couple has had other problems. >> the doors slamming, the name calling, the yelling. i guess after the fear of him or his reaction behind him, she didn't take it. >> now, the mother who we're told has no local family is still in the hospital. her daughter is safe in the custody of child protective services. an update now on the deadly police shooting in prince william county.

it happened this afternoon right near jefferson davis highway. that's in dumfries. prince william county police say they just turned over an armed burglary suspect when he jumped out of the car and ran off. they were able to track him down in the woods, but that's when the officer say the suspect started to come at them with a gun and they opened fire and killed him. his name has yet to be released. she was unconscious, pregnant and trapped in a car that was slowly filling with water. >> the car veered off the side of the road, hit a tree, flipped over an embankment and the car went top side into a creek. >> thankfully she survived the accident, all thanks to some emergency room doctors at southern maryland hospital. doctors she now works with. this frightening crash happened two years ago on temple hill road and when the emergency crews finally found her, she was unresponsive but she did have a pulse. >> she was critically ill and her survival rate was extremely low. >> you never know when it's our

time to go. luckily for jayden and i, it wasn't our time. >> she recovered. six weeks after the crash, she gave birth to her little boy and today she is back in that same er but not as a patient. she is a chart manager working side by side with the doctors who saved her life. now to the latest on the payroll tax cut. tonight only a handful of house republicans are left on capitol hill waiting to negotiate with senators who left five days ago. senate democrats are refusing to talk until the house passes their 60-day extension, but house speaker john boehner insists congress can work out a deal if they just come back. >> all we're asking for is to get the senate members over here to work with us to resolve our differences. >> they are not representing the views of the american people. >> president obama called both party leaders today. he praised majority leader reed

for working out a bipartisan deal and pushed speaker boehner for the two month extension. if the two sides can't compromise, 160 million americans will see their paychecks shrink about 1,000 clarz next year. another -- $1,000 next year. doctors could say payments from medicare cut 27%. the federal aviation administration is giving tired pilots a break. new federal rules require airlines to allow pilots 10 hours to rest between ship to prevent them from flying fatigue. the new rules require 30 consecutive hours off and flight times that are no longer than 8 or 9 hours per pilot. the rules come three years after the deadly crash of a regional airliner flown by two exhausted pilots. the faa estimates the cost of the new rules to the airline industry at nearly $300 million over 10 years. tonight 8 u.s. soldiers have been charged in the death of a fellow ti. the army says they assaulted and

taunted a 19-year-old private danny chin while they were all serving in afghanistan. his body has been found in a guard tower there dead from a self inflicted gunshot wound. chin supporters believe he was a victim of racial hazing. >> hazing is not tolerated in the military. if it's found and it's proven, it's dealt with. >> people are willing to lay down their lives for the country. they deserve better. >> those 8 soldiers accused in the deaths are charged with crime. all of them were chin's superiors. ♪ taps playing . the ambassador of the new libyan transition council admitted libya was involved in the bombing of pan am flight 203. today marked the 23rd

anniversary of that terrorist attack. and at a memorial in arlington national cemetery, those families paid tribute to the memories of the 270 people who were killed. the ambassador says gadhafi must have ordered the bombing, but the families are still hoping for the arrests of the others that actually carried out the plot. as we hit the first day of winter, it seems far from it at the region's ski resorts. many of them are open, but just barely after weeks of mild weather in december. liberty ski resort has part-time employees sitting idol. the resort has managed to make some snow during the coldest nights last week, but it hasn't been enough. >> i think people will be really surprised once they see how quickly we can turn a mountain that doesn't have any snow into a mountain that does. if we get some halfway cold temperatures swa around 28-29 degrees -- somewhere around 28-29 degrees, we will open up slopes very quickly. >> this map shows the region's

figure in her father's garage apparently. no word yet why she took it. car dealers know most of us envy the latest technology on new models. blue tooth, on star, gps, satellite traffic and radio, of course. >> what they don't tell you, the more connected your car is, the more vulnerable it can be to hackers. bruce leshan reports on the frightening new world of car hacking. >> reporter: this is now gone way beyond theoretical. >> how can someone do this. >> reporter: a maryland family is convinced hackers got the electronics of their son's dodge charge er and stole it from the driveway while he was deployed in afghanistan. >> nathan loved that car. >> reporter: frightening to me the idea you can rolling at highway speeds and someone can remotely slam on the brakes. >> the potential exists. >> it's not like you have to worry that somebody is going to point the phone at your car. we're not there yet.

but it's definitely something to keep an eye on. >> unlock. start. just about anything we would like to do. >> reporter: in san francisco, researchers accessed a central computer processor through an internet connected car alarm. >> every single one of these that we looked at led to a complete car compromise. >> reporter: in seattle, researchers blacked out the make and model of a car that offered multiple pathways for hackers a thousand miles away to send out gps coordinates, open the doors. >> so here we are commanding it to steal away. >> reporter: and drive away without a key in the ignition. >> start my car. >> reporter: in new jersey, they developed an iphone app that lets him unlock cars and start engines by voice. >> vehicle ignition has been triggered. >> you have to think a little

bit like a hacker. >> the lock on that car is controlled by an on board computer. i want to write some code that a laws me to do that remotely. >> reporter: they are working with manufacturers to develop fire walls to keep attackers out of your car. but next time you long for a new high tech vehicle, you may want to ask a few questions. >> when do i really want my car to do that. >> reporter: bruce leshan, 9news now. >> now, this is a case where if you got an older say less connected car, like the one here in this monitor here, well, you just may be a little more safe from the hackers. of course your car is a wreck, but you're safe from hackers. i don't know what's worse. >> a firewall for your car. that's crazy. >> i'm safe. [ laughing ] >> you're not that high tech. >> the camry. >> the cam bam you can hot wire, but you can't get into it with a computer. you have to do it the old fashion way. >> you have to use one of those window things. all right. we are looking at temperatures

around 60 right now. i'm almost sick. a really am. >> it's going to be okay. >> let's start with the satellite picture, radar combined. we got rid of one storm today that didn't produce that much rain. generally a tenth of an inch, maybe 15 hundredths of an inch. we'll zoom in. some moisture back into texas. this is the second storm. this is great news for texas. rain throughout most of the eastern 1-half of texas. that is incredibly good news. that is going to be our rain tomorrow night. we'll get a rest tomorrow. lot of clouds, yes, but it will stay dry for the morning commute and the evening commute. right now we just have some clouds. all the showers are gonna cross the delmarva into the ocean. look at the temperatures. still 60 downtown. 57 in gaithersburg and leesburg. it's 54 in fredericksburg and this is crazy warm, 55 in cumberland, we jump the divide it's only 45. that's not much of a drop. both commutes should be dry. that said, rain comes in pretty

quickly thursday night. mild again on thursday. we'll hit 60 because we hit 60 already. rain again thursday night. this is a much more significant event. probably a half an inch to maybe 3-quarters of an inch. and then dry and cooler on friday. we're going to trade the 60s for the 50s. it's not exactly going to be crazy cold. overnight mostly cloudy, rather cold. 45-52. i think most of us will remain in the 50s overnight. now, tomorrow morning mostly cloudy and mild. maybe you need a light jacket. you do not need an umbrella tomorrow during the day. 40s and 50s. winds westerly at 10. and then by afternoon, the clouds hang tough. mostly cloudy. continued mild. dry at least through the evening. high temps around 60. winds turn just a little bit out of the southeast at about 10. so we'll break it down then. thursday to start 45-53 with clouds. by noon a lot of clouds but 55-60 and still dry. by evening, 57-62 by 5:00. and, yes, still dry. all right. next three days, we're looking

at temperatures 60 tomorrow. a little cooler on friday. pretty nice day on friday really. low 50s. we'd be jumping for joy friday if we didn't have the 60s today and tomorrow. saturday chilly, but that's good for football. skins in town. temperatures in the mid 40s. all right. next seven days, after that we're looking at maybe some light rain or showers christmas night. we'll keep it in the forecast. as we go through more and more guidance and more and more computer runs, the storm goes farther and farther south. so we may have to take it out tomorrow. howard will have more on that in the morning. in any event, just chilly. low 50s on monday with sunshine. mid 50s on tuesday and near 50 on wednesday. i mean, there is no arctic air here. there is no arctic air in lake minnesota right now. there is none. >> mild. >> mild december. >> we're trying to figure out if that pull sating ornament ate the tree. >> can we put that back up.
