you went. ♪ jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way ♪ >> good evening, everyone. i'm matt jablow. bruce johnson is off tonight. peace was the message from pope benedict xvi this christmas day. >> feliz navidad. >> cheers filled st. peter's square as he delivered his annual christmas day message. tens of thousands of worshippers and tourists gathered at the vatican for the event. the pope prayed for peace around the world especially in the middle east. for many of the 1.3 billion catholics around the world, today is about friends and family. here in the d.c. area, many chose to give rather than receive. armando trull visited with some of those good samaritans. >> does anybody want a present? >> reporter: santa had gifts for kids at the change community center. >> it makes me feel good to know there's people out there

willing to give a helping hand for those less fortunate. >> reporter: at the jewish community center in dupont circle, 1,000 volunteers were busy helping other organizations. >> i know that there are 50 agencies, and what would you say? how many people? >> literally tens of thousands of people. >> reporter: some even donated blood to keep area supplies from reaching dangerously low levels. and the spirit of christmas was alive and well here at the restaurant right across from howard university. they had enough food to feed anyone who was hungry and they even brought horses for the children, kiddies of all ages, to ride. >> string beans coming in. >> reporter: inside, plates of christmas dinner, enough for 2,000 people. >> the more you have, the more you ought to give, in my mind. >> merry, merry, merry christmas. >> reporter: dinner was broadcast live. at franklin square, folks didn't need two bits for a shave and a haircut. >> i think you did a wonderful

job. i thank god, you're doing a wonderful job. >> reporter: a coalition of 30 korean christian churches provided food and clothing. in other corner, young muslims and jews, side by side, underscored the true meaning of christmas. >> serving those less fortunate, so you have the community being strengthened. ♪ [ music ] >> reporter: on this christmas day, many washingtononians of all ages, races and ages were united in peace and love. in washington, armando trull, 9 news now. also today in afghanistan, u.s. troops celebrated christmas with a church service and christmas lunch. some of the soldiers were also planning on contacting their families on the internet today to share the holiday with them. the first family spent christmas day with family and friends at a rented vacation home in hawaii. the obamas attended church services on oahu.

last night president obama called ten service members stationed around the world, two from each branch of the military to thank them for their service. the obamas return to washington early next month. hopefully all of your holiday gifts were good ones this year. if not, keep in mind that the rush to return is just hours away, and with tomorrow being a federal holiday, you can bet stores will be extremely busy. jonathan is live in northwest washington with advice. >> reporter: on christmas day, it's a challenge to find any stores open, with the exception of some drugstores open around the clock. but tomorrow expect to see some hard core shoppers with their serious game faces on. the day after christmas may not have the same hustle and bustle of christmas eve or black friday, but you can count on sandra gomez being in the mix on monday. >> it's my last day being on vacation, so i have to go to work on tuesday. so i think i will probably go and check the christmas

savings, probably 50, 75% off. so i may go shopping a little bit. >> reporter: if you plan to bring back any holiday gifts, remember most stores give you 90 days for returns. but when it comes to electronics, the limits are different. target has a 45 day return policy. and for wal-mart, it's 15 to 30 days from december 26. and macy's has no cutoff date for most products. so while many people will hit the stores for returns and also to take advantage of post christmas sales, remember the folks who don't have a company holiday. >> back to work. >> reporter: if you are making any return tomorrow, do not forget your receipt. now, some stores will honor your returns if you do not have receipts such as target and wal- mart. reporting live, jonathan costen, 9 news now. an update that compares themselves to modern day robin

hoods. computer hackers known as anonymous obtained thousands of credit card numbers from a texas based think tank and charged various charitable donations. one victim says $700 was taken from his account and given to the red cross, save the children and other charities. the hackers say they lined up enough targets to continue hacking into accounts for another week. an update on the double murder that prompted an amber alert in virginia last night. 2-year-old caden burnside is safe and we know who he was with when he was taken. police say 6-year-old edward bottomer, jr. and cheryl clap were shot to death in richmond. the gunman fled in the couple's car unaware caden was in the back seat. police are looking for clemens in connection with those two murders. some scary moments for a motel worker. a man with a gun tried to force the woman into a room at the motel 6 on old annapolis road. the man reportedly held a gun to the woman's head but took

outside a catholic church after christmas mass ended. the white house condemned the attacks as senseless. elsewhere an attack in afghanistan killed a member of the national parliament and 18 other people today. 40 people were wounded. it happened 155 miles east of kabul when a suicide bomber attacked afghans as they were leaving the funeral of a village elder. no one has claimed responsibility for the attack. also overseas, britain's prince phillip remains hospitalized this christmas day. the 90-year-old prince is recovering from surgery to remove a blocked artery. members of the royal family visited phillip in the hospital this morning. buckingham palace says the prince is likely to remain in the hospital for the rest of the holiday season. still to come tonight, it's almost time to pop the cork on those new year's celebrations. a look at why champagne and sparkling wine are seeing a rebirth here in the d.c. area. and anne's back with a look at the forecast.

more than 100,000 people call the north american aerospace command last night to check on santa's progress. norad said it took 102,000 phone calls breaking the previous record of 80,000. the agency's facebook page logged almost 990,000 likes. norad started taking calls about santa's whereabouts back in 1955 when a newspaper ad inviting kids to call santa printed the wrong phone number. urban kahn was -- the stockbroker has been working on wall street since before the great depression and is 106 now. even after all these years, he still shows up for work every single day.
