because the defense mapping agency have slowly taken their employees away. >> reporter: some area businesses did not survive. merchants see hope in a plan to move 3,000 intelligence workers to the site. >> i'm all for it. i think the more industry that comes into the area, the better. >> we were excited to hear about 3,000 jobs coming in. the quicker the better. >> reporter: but some neighbors strongly disagree. >> well, i think there are multiple impacts. the first is the tremendous traffic issues because they're proposing an increase in the traffic. and there are significant environmental issues about how clearing trees back over there will affect the wash out of the national park area. >> reporter: neighbors argued a planned six story parking garage near this lot will damage views from their nearby homes and damage views from the potomac

river when the trees fall for the garage. >> the community has risen up significantly. >> reporter: but not unanimity of opinion . >> i think intelligence agencies have to be home someplace, and i'm more than happy that they're home near where i am because i think it's necessary. >> reporter: opponents of the plan and its accompanying tree loss argue it defies the long established policy of protecting the river valley from erosion and fights sediment build up that is taking place in the river. things could change. there is a planning review in february. but given the national security implications, that may not be it. >> thank you. today family and friends of alan gross gathered outside the complex calling on nirvana to let him go. he is a u.s. government contractor that has been held in cuba for two years now. cuba recently announced plans to

release 3,000 prisoners. but it said gross will not be among them. his supporters hope for a change of heart. >> because we believe that justice anywhere is in justice everywhere. and so we stand and face and hope and love and impeach that the government will have a heart and let alan gross go. >> the u.s. state department says it's disappointed cuba is not releasing gross, an act that will improve relations between the two countries. the suspect in a gruesome new york mother-child murder is behind bars tonight in laurel, maryland. laurel police say 24-year-old jerry lewis walked into the city's police station on christmas eve and confessed to the crime. he is accused of killing 21-year-old shakeela planter and her 2-year-old son jayden in his apartment on long island sometime around december 18th. we want to warn you the details of the crime are graphic. >> the female was stabbed a number of times. the baby was viciously beaten. the baby was ultimately put in a

plastic bag and then put in a freezer. >> the police say lewis went to his sister's house in new jersey after the killing. he went back to long island to ditch planter's bus and caught a bus to dc. he is awaiting extradition back to new york. the manhunt for a suspect in a christmas eve double murder and kidnapping of a 2-year-old boy is over. richmond police got a tip this afternoon about the location of 27-year-old jamal lewis clemons. officers along with u.s. marshals and a swat team surrounded the house around 3:00 p.m. and demanded he come out. eventually they received a key and permission to enter the apartment. >> the officers opened up the door and made an announcement. he gave himself up on his own voluntarily without any incident. >> clemons shot edward bound and stole an suv to get away.

that suv had a 2-year-old outside. the 2-year-old was found unharmed later that night. they don't believe clemons new the child was inside the car when he stole it. prince george's county police are asking for help to solve a robbery. one man sevdz the look out while two others jumped the counter and raid the register. this trio also recently robbed a wendies and a family dollar store. if you recognize any of them, call the police in prince george's county. the christmas holiday has now come and gone with no sign of a blind man who mysteriously disappeared from an amtrak train bound for washington a week and a half ago. mitchell malik smith's family hopes he would contact them somehow during the holiday, but it didn't happen. police in charlotte, north carolina are looking into the case because they believe smith may have gotten off the train there on his way to birmingham,

alabama. >> there was confusion. he said send me back to dc. now, amtrak says they put him on a train back to dc. and we have heard nothing from him. >> smith has been completely blind since becoming a victim of a shooting in prince george's county a decade ago. he also suffers from bouts of depression. his family just wants to find him. tonight the washington wizards were finally back in action at dc's verizon center and for businesses in that area, a big relief. this year's nba lockout took a toll on the shops, bars and restaurants that dot the landscape around the arena. the wizards draw an average 16,000 fans at each game. fans that were missed the past few weeks when the nba season was in limbo. >> there is definitely a noticeable spike when the wizards play next door. >> we're very excited to have it all back. >> businesses are now hoping for a winning season to attract bigger crowds than normal.

in chicago, a financial exchange called nadex has filed an application with the federal government to offer trading on political events. they say americans bet on everything from football to the price of oil, so why not elections? well, you can bet not everybody is sold on that idea. >> elections matter and can have a really significant economic impact on people. so we think that these types of contracts fit squarely within the traditional functions performed by futures exchange. >> if ned ral regulators do not -- federal regulators do not act by january 24th, it gets an automatic okay. here is a little more political intrigue. a recent poll shows 2.5 million americans have left their political parties. game changers could have a big outcome on the 2012 election. why the exodus? to find out, we conducted our own informal survey and one word seems to sum it up. frustration. >> people just want some

knocked him flat out unconscious. that man woke up a few minutes later and derek held him until police held up. some mug shots shows the damage done by that left punch. if you're happy and you know it, send a tweet. a new study of twitter shows that the tweets we send gauge how we're feeling, if we're down and out or feeling our happiest and best. but some of us just don't buy the tweet theory. >> reporter: there is an old song that goes, don't worry, be happy. according to a team of mathematicians, many of us are feeling a little down. the research analyzed nearly 5 billion worldwide twitter messages for 33 months and they found there has been a gradual downward slope during the last year and a half. but listen to this, people usually feel good on holidays like christmas. but here is the down side of that information. it also indicates that people usually feel blue on mondays. no wonder i feel like i could use a hug right now. >> what do i think about the

research? i think that days after christmas when you're with your family, of course i'm going to be happy. and when i'm on vacation, i'm visiting everybody. it's a really exciting time. i'm happiest on fridays because the week is almost over. >> the twitter research picked up on certain key words like laughter, being the happy extreme, and the word terrorist, of course, ranked way down. but some monday shoppers just aren't buying the research. >> it's a myth. especially after the holidays. you're with your family and everything is beautiful. the weather is fantastic. there is nothing to hold you down. >> every day i try to get myself to be happy. i try myself to be happy at the end of the day. so when i set my goals in the morning, i try to achieve them. if i do not meet those goals, then i'm a bit unhappy. >> reporter: in fact, she is always happy. she's always from sicily, italy. >> because we have the sun and we're happy. and our parents told us to be

happy. and to be happy with what we have. >> reporter: and she brought her happiness with her when she moved to america some 46 years ago. in downtown bethesda, maryland, 9news now. >> no tweeting necessary. one snow lover found a way to get himself happy despite mother nature's lack of cooperation. he created his own white christmas. the weather in idaho has been too warm for snow. very unusual. but that didn't work for him. so he first tried to build a snow maker with instructions from the internet. when that didn't work, he went out and bought one and spent three days making the powdery stuff. and you can imagine the kids loved it. i know mine cannot wait to go sledding. mom is okay with no sledding. >> we in the weather department definitely like some good snowstorms and we really earn our paychecks. but we got actually some quiet weather for most of the week. now, tomorrow we're going to see

some changes. we're talking clouds and the showers arising. i think the showers will arrive a little earlier than our models are first indicating. we thought they would hold off until the afternoon. now i think we'll see them as early hours. here is a look at the national picture. the storm system is coming in from the south coming in from the gulf. it's a milder storm system which is why we're not talking any snow from us from this weather maker because temperatures will still be mild. you can see the yellows and the reds. that is some pretty moderate to heavy rainfall. we'll see some of that take place in our area by tomorrow afternoon. right now we do see some clouds rolling in, so we have mostly cloudy conditions overnight. but right now we're not looking at showers. now, i think a broader look here, here is a look at the doppler radar where you can see out to the west of us in west virginia, ohio, louisville getting some showers. so this is eventually going to push into mid-atlantic. so the farther west and south you are of town, the earlier you'll see the showers arriving tomorrow morning.

temperatures right now 40 in downtown. 34 in gaithersburg. 32 in culpeper. below freezing in martinsburg. manassas 30. so it's cold out there. that will continue to drop temperatures through the morning hours. clouds move in overnight. we're already seeing that. the rain starting in from the west tomorrow morning. then we'll have widespread rain all day by tuesday afternoon. then after that, partly cloudy and then cooler for wednesday. middle of the week. here is a look at the future cast. the clouds come in. tomorrow morning at 7:00 a.m., some showers possible. orange, fredericksburg. the farther south and west you are of town, the earliest you'll see the showers. by 11:00, we'll see a lot of places seeing some showers. most of it being light until the afternoon. you see the yellow. this is the moderate to heavy rainfall. generally half an inch to one inch possible from the system. by 6:00, it starts to pull outgoing farther east and north of us. and so we'll probably start to dry out by tomorrow night. but that still means some wet

suit and tie. vesely has been nursing a sore hip that kept him out of both the last pre-season game and sunday's two hour practice. no timetable on when we'll see him on the court. the washington capitals also in action tonight after the holiday break. trying to get back on the winning track. but i don't know if they ate too much or something over the holidays, but they were lethargic and just pretty much darn awful tonight. the caps up in buffalo where the sabers came out on fire. they score within the first minute of the game. matt alice gets one two minutes later. the second matt hendrick swauchz the shutout -- squashes the shutout. the sabers beat the caps. finally a word of warning, check your equipment the next time you head out. this guy is having some fun on his motor bike. nice jump. it completely snapped in half.
