the new year up the road in baltimore. and a small family-owned company called image engineering is busy putting the finishing touches on the lights, lasers and pyrotechnics for the inner harbor operation. image engineering has worked on three super bowl shows, countless big name concerts and has done special effects for both the ravens and the wizards and of course, the big question, olga, how is the weather going to be for viewing those fireworks that will be going off? >> i've got the answer to that question but you'll have to wait a little bit until we get to the seven-day forecast. i have a little suspense in there. if you've gone out at all today, you felt the wind. we started out breezy this morning. it was pretty tough outside earlier on today. now, we have sustained winds at both reagan national and at dulles, above 22, 23 miles per hour and gusts higher than that. so, the day planner will stay on the breezy side. we'll definitely see the sunshine. partly cloudy skies through mid
12:19 pm
and late morning. now, we're starting to see a little bit more sunshine peeking through. it will be all sun by the time get to sunset. the temperatures are holding steady in the middle range 40s. we'll continue with that trend until we get to about 5:00 or 6:00. add the winds die down and the skies clear completely, temperatures will drop off so if you're going out later on this evening, we'll quickly slip into the 30s by about the 5:00 hour and then into the 20s overnight tonight. so, here's how we're looking for the short term. it is sunny and windy afternoon. that is not going to change for us any time soon. at least for the next couple of hours. already gusts have been recorded at 35, 36 miles per hour. we'll continue that for another couple of hours. then i am tracking a slight rain chance into the forecast. but i can tell you the good news, the rain will not come on your new year's eve or your new year's day but the forecast is actually looking pretty good for the weekend ahead. here are those wind gusts i was talking about. 24-mile-per-hour wind recorded
12:20 pm
already through gaithersburg. about 29 out toward leesburg. 31 at the reagan national airport. you get the picture. it is going to continue to be quite brisk. when we have our temperatures in the 40s, say about 42, to 47 degrees, you factor in those winds and the feels like temperature is much colder than that. so, at reagan national airport at this hour, it is feeling more like 39, 38 degrees and the wind is pretty brisk at 23 miles per hour. satellite and radar got us cleared out after all of the rain we experienced yesterday. most of the clouds that are coming over the mountain at least where we have the snowy precipitation, it is not making it into our area. not expected to. we'll have the sunshine as we go later on into the day. the change in our forecast tomorrow will be winds. temperatures tomorrow are going to be similar to what we have today. at least it is going to feel better without that wind chill. so, highs basically 47 in the city center. more like the upper 40s down to the south and off toward the
12:21 pm
west. the feels like temperature though, you need to keep that in mind if you're going to be going out early tomorrow morning. the morning temperatures drop off significantly down into the 20s. which means that some of the suburban areas could even see a pocket or two slip into the teens before it is all over. the sunshine will continue mainly sunny skies for tomorrow. 47 degrees our high. it is going to be a lot like today as we go into thursday. on friday, 54 degrees. i like the trend. we'll be keeping toward the end of the week. there is a slight raindrop in the forecast only on friday night. a few possibilities for isolated shower to pop up that most areas will stay dry for saturday, new year's eve, we're looking great. a high of 50 degrees. very chilly night if you will be out at midnight. 36 degrees early on new year's morning but the weekend forecast looks great with temperatures returning to the 40s. 9news now will continue in just a few minutes.

what better way to kick off the new year with a whiter, healthier smile. joining with us simple things you can do to make it happen is dentist dr. alex. thanks for coming back. >> thanks for having me. >> let's talk about tooth whitening. our first step for the brighter, whiter, healthier looking smile. >> there are lots of ways to whiten your smile. just over the counter, try over the counter stuff, it will work. it will definitely brighten your smile a little bit. there are two methods in a dental office. one of them is take home and the newer ones aren't like you have to sleep with them overnight. only about half an hour. in one week, you'll have whiter teeth. the best way but not the most cost-effective way is to do inoffice whitening. you will be ten to 12 shades lighter in two hours. >> what about tooth sensitivity? it is such a problem and they
12:26 pm
really complain about pain in the whitening process. >> the less time the solution sits on your teeth, basically, the less sensitive you will be which is why the inoffice one works the best in terms of sensitivity. during the time, you might have sensitivity but afterwards, you're fine. >> we'll talk about veneers and smile makeovers. what is a veneer? >> a veneer is a porcelain laminate that sits on top of your shape. it will change the shape of your teeth. you redo all of those, we can whiten their smile, lengthen the teeth. you can change the way a person looks. it makes them look ten years younger basically. >> that's a pretty nice benefit. what about bonding? >> bonding works as well. way more conservative. the problem with it becomes that it will wear and stain. so, it is not as lasting. as veneers are. >> here are two topics that freak me out a little bit.
12:27 pm
contouring our gums and contouring our teeth? >> yes. >> it is not as bad as it sounds. it is not that difficult. what happens is say you have a gummy smile, an easy way or their smile is even on the bottom but not the top. you can do a gum contouring. but basically what happens is it is topical. you use a laser. it is one visit in the office. you use a laser and sculpt the gums up to where it needs to be. it makes a quick difference. fastest way to change your smile. >> these are good things. what sort of routine should we adopt at home now that we have this brighter, whiter healthier smile? >> go to the dentist ist twice a year, floss every single day. >> the flossing. >> always flossing. wear a night guard to protect your new white smile. >> ok. >> why the night guard? >> because a lot of times, a lot of people will grind and they'll go through stressful times and you'll chip away your teeth and wear away your teeth. the more pressure you put on,
12:28 pm
the more yellow. >> dr. alex, thank you so much. that's 9news now for noon. we'll be back at 5:00. you can check us out 24 hours a day on the web at wusa9.com. have a great day, everybody!
