the cam was rolling on the first in a string of burglaries. this happened in the middle of november and since then, police say it happened about half a dozen times in the area. >> burglary is, in my opinion, one of the worst invasion of privacy there is. your home is your palace. >> suspects enter the homes during the day when no one is there. when they realize it's empty, they smash windows and go inside. the burglars are taking jewelry and credit cards. residents are on high alert. >> people look for an opportunity. >> it's not fair. especially when people are not home. this is not a very rich neighborhood. people are struggling just like everywhere else. >> here you see one of the suspects tried to sell a laptop. he just stolen from a home to employees at a radio shack. a different suspect believed to be part of the same group was also picked up by surveillance cameras as he tried to withdraw

popular local rapper. the death of franklin is shake fans from his home in white oak, maryland, all the way to nigeria. monotouring the reaction online who police are saying very little about today. >> this was the rapper known as frank digy, seen in locally produced videos on youtube. his real name was franklin amobe. his life ended at age 24 yesterday. dropping near a bus stop in white oak after being shot while getting into his car at this apartment complex on stewart lane. news of his death spread in the rap music community, prominently on social media like twitter, where there are thousands of mentions of him. music bloggers in nigeria picked up the news. his family is nigerian. familiar themes about money, women, and clubs. also online, another side of

amobe's life, electronic court records of his numerous brushes with the law, including charges for drug possession, theft, and assault. many charges dropped or not prosecuted. some online fans reported digy was turning his life around and pursuing higher education. and most all said he will be dearly missed. meanwhile, montgomery county investigators are saying very little additional about the ambush that occurred in this parking lot yesterday morning. except to say that they do not believe it was a random attack. in white oak, scott broom, 9news now. franklin's family has declined 9news request for an interview. new information tonight about those garages set on fire up in urbana. tonight police say they have four suspects in custody. investigators say the 16-year- old boys used marine flairs to set garages ablade on singleton terrace. they tracked them down using surveillance video from a wal- mart that shows the boy

breaking news as we told you a few minutes ago, a major accident in bethesda near nih. the entire rockville pike closed downright at the peek of rush hour. good thing it's christmas week, i guess. anita. >> you can see all the rescue activity going on. several injuries involved in this accident on rockville pike. let's go to oscar garcia. good evening. what can you tell us? >> good evening. fire and rescue units were dispatched around 4:20 this afternoon for a collision. we did get on the scene. it was reported multiple vehicles. two vehicles taking the brunt of the impact. one of the vehicles is a metro bus. we are evaluating a dozen passengers to include the drivers. and we are going to be transporting at least ten.

some with nonlife threatening injuries and three with serious life threatening injuries. apparently rockville pike north and southbound lanes are completely shut down between cedar and pookville road. this is 4:20 this afternoon. we have approximately 20 fire and rescue personnel. we did have to extricate patients from these vehicles. some proved challenging, but everyone has been executed at this time and transporting at least ten to local hospitals. >> captain, any idea what happened? you mentioned a metro bus. what happened there? >> the circumstances of the collision on what happened are going to be investigated by montgomery county police. i can't tell you it is involving a metro bus. one of the larger buses and the brunt of it, metro bus and a pickup truck. exactly what happened, i can't tell you that. this is concentrated. right now as far as rescue efforts on the northbound lanes

of rockville pike. >> and are most of the injuries of folks on the bus or in the pickup truck? can you elaborate at all? >> we definitely had passengers on the bus. in regards to the driver of the bus and the driver of the pickup truck, those were some of the more challenging extrications that were taking place earlier and in regards to the pickup truck, that was only about five minute extrication. the bus proved more challenging because it is up against a pole and some trees. so obviously want to make sure all the electrical hazards were taken care of. so far we evaluated a dozen and transporting ten. >> as looking at the scene, it's an evolving active scene. do you have any idea for the rush hour folks coming that way, when you may be able to open a lane or two on rockville pike? >> i will go ahead and talk to police about that. i can tell you it depends on their investigation and the length of their investigation. it is spread over about 100 to

200 foot area as far as the collision and the vehicles. so it's going to be pretty much up to police in regards to the circumstances and when they will be able to open up the lanes. >> we were talking about earlier. people being transported to suburban hospital. do you have any others going to trauma centers or anymore you can elaborate on the injuried? >> obviously that was a choice. we do have six others. i know we dispurse them to other hospitals. we call for a metavac helicopter. >> captain garcia, thank you so much for chatting with us. captain garcia from the montgomery county fire department. a very serious accident in rockville pike. ten people had to be transported to the hospital. three of them with life threatening injuries. rockville pike completely shut down between cedar lane. a very tough, tough afternoon out on the rockville pike. >> it sounds like rockville

getting back to the breaking news we are following right now. a violent accident between a metro bus and a pickup truck on rockville pike in bethesda. matt jablow is live now on the scene with more. matt. >> reporter: anita, the accident happened about 75 minutes ago. right around 4:15 this afternoon. at this point, we believe about ten people will be or have been transported to the hospital with various injuries. joining me right now is chief richie bowers. thanks for your time on this busy afternoon. what can you tell us? >> as you indicated, around 4:20 this afternoon, we had a collision here between cedar avenue. very serious collision involving multiple vehicles and multiple patients. >> we were told at one point

there might be a metro bus involved. what can you tell us about that? >> we can confirm a metro bus was involved. >> and the driver of that bus? >> the driver of the bus is being extricated and treated and being transported to the hospital. >> can you describe some of the injuries? >> multiple victims, as i said, various injuries. some minor to serious. we do have confirmation from montgomery police that we have one fatality. >> it's very early in the investigation. is there any sense about a cause? >> not at this time. i turned it over to the county police to answer that question. >> so, if you could first identify yourself and talk about the cause of the information at this point. >> i'm the commander here in bethesda. all i know is we have two vehicles involved. one being a metro bus, the second being a pickup truck. we have fatality. our collision reconstruction is responding and we'll be handling the reconstruction. >> the roads were dry at the time.

>> yes, they were. >> was there a traffic signal with the accident occurred? >> where it occurred is northbound and southbound. >> obviously you can see the road is closed in both directions. how long do you think it will be closed and what advice to come to houses or businesses in this area for the next few hours? >> there is a detour route. old georgetown, you can avoid this area. we do have some state highway trucks to help people find their way through the area. but yeah, avoid this area. it's going to be a long investigation. we'll be out here for several hours. >> thank you very much. we'll get back to you throughout the night. derek and anita, back to you. we'll be sure to pass along any new information. >> matt jablow, thank you in north bethesda. derek, over to you. mothers all across this country staging a nurse in today at target stores, including moms right near in our neck of the woods. we sent lindsey mastis to figure out what is going on. she is back, so who what is

going on? >> this started because a mom said she had a bad experience when she was breast-feeding her child at target. and that happened in texas. now normally you would think a protest would happen if a mom was told she wasn't allowed to nurse at the store at all. when you find out the details, you might wonder if the store is being unfairly targeted. this is michelle hickman. she says she was at target november 29, when it was time to nurse her son, noah. she sat down on the floor in the women's clothing section. >> i had this big blanket. this big one over me. >> hickman says she turned down an offer to use a dressing room. what is bothering her is how she says others reacted and she is calling it harassment. >> they all came and started walking by and shaking their head, like, you know, and rolling their eyes and shaking their head like i'm doing something so horrible.

i'm feeding my baby. >> hickman shared additional details online and said it was target employees that urged her to move, threatened her, and harassed her. in response, she helped organize a nationwide nurse in. moms in our area participanted. >> we wanted to show some solidarity. >> she visited the target in springfield, virginia, so she could nurse her daughter. >> because i don't want maria to grow up and nurse in a world where that would ever happen. >> target is responding. >> guests are free to go anywhere within our store to nurse their babies. >> target has apologized. they say they are going over policies with employees, but this is getting a lot of debate on facebook. mainly because hickman chose to sit on the floor in an aisle and a will the of people are wondering whether she is allowed to do that. i asked target. they said nursing or not, anyone is allowed to sit on the floor as long as it is not in

the way of anyone who is trying to shop. >> so there's a line between rudeness and acceptness to nurse wherever you want to. >> correct. >> we appreciate that. and there is word that a third baby this month got sick from bacteria that sometimes associated with tainted infant formula. the child lives in oklahoma and has fully recovered. the child in illinois also rebounded, but a ten day old baby in missouri, that baby passed away. the missouri child's death was initially linked to a powdered formula called enfamil. health officials say the oklahoma child did not consume that same formula. federal health experts are conducting the tests. >> on to a health alert, west virginia health officials looking for anymore possible cases of swine flu. this after two cases were reported in mineral county. the centers ers for disease control say both cases involve children that attended the same day care. the children have since

recovered. >> outrage in arizona after a nine month old cat was euthanized in phoenix. daniel is the owner. after she cut her paws on a fence. but the recovering heroin addict says he didn't have money to pay for her treatment. his mother offered to pay over the phone, but the humane society doesn't take credit cards to cut down on fraud. >> they led me to believe if i couldn't come up with the money right then and there, the only way i was going to get her treated was to sign off on her. >> humane society says the cat was euthanized the same day because it was suffering and it didn't have enough doctors to treat her. it has gotten dozens of comments on their facebook page and apologizes for what has happened. a primate sanctuary in florida announced this morning thatcheetah has died at the age of 80. the sanctuary says the 1930s movie star lived there since 1960. when the chimp arrived from johnny's estate, it was one of

back now with an update on the deadly accident involving a metro bus tonight. it happened on rockville pike. investigators say the bus and the pickup truck collided around 4:15 this afternoon. in the aftermath, we now know one person has died. we do not know if that person

was in the truck or on the bus. ten people had to go to the local hospital for treatment and we'll have an update on the story in 15 minutes. also, caught on tape tonight, a sheriff deputy crashes his squad car into a crowded restaurant patio. >> it's a christmas miracle that no one got hurt. >> it happened christmas eve, in fact, in new mexico. investigators say the deputy was on his way to a call when another driver hit his car. it caused the cruiser to spin out, hit a snow bank and flipped. several other cars were destroyed. as you heard, luckily nobody was hurt. well it has been nearly ten months since japan's devastating tsunami. >> much of the debris was swept out into the pacific ocean and now experts think it is starting to wash up in the u.s. lee cowen explains. >> skated, millions of tons of debris littered the japanese landscape, but also littered
