to stick, but in some parts as they got cold enough, a little bit of that accumulating, but no major accumulations. all right, here is a look at the satellite radar picture. we'll show you what you can expect for the rest of the night. we'll still see cloudy conditions. temperatures are falling down into the 30s. but most of the precipitation activity should be coming to an end in the next couple of hours. so no need to really get concerned about the snow. the temperatures again, falling into the 30s. but then get ready for mild weather over the next few days here before arctic air comes this way. anita and derek, back to you. >> it sounds great for new year's. the surprise snow will continue. and he is live for us in leesburg where like a lot of places, folks were caught off guard with this. >> yes. i have a confession to make. i was caught off guard too. typically when we get snow. i'm prepared to wear the ugly socks. but you know, despite our brief encounter with the snow, the

people we talked to were not fazed by it, at least now anyway. the snow did come down here, especially in the higher elevations. for a brief while, it blanketed the overpasses, recalling your winter driving skills. yeah, it's coming, you know, what happened? >> just a light sprinkling of snow. you know, you have four feet out here. >> you guys do a heck of a job reporting the snowfall out here in leesburg. thanks. >> you're not fazed by this, huh? >> what, the snow? yeah, it's terrible. i need to get my snow tires on.

i need to go. see you guys. bye. >> and the men we talk to are not fazed by the snow, but you cannot get too cocky because we still have january, february, march to look forward to. coming up at 6:00, we'll talk to one gentleman who is prepared as to when we get that big one. reporting live, channel 9 news now. >> all right, thank you so much. i was out getting my change. i know that for sure. all right, on to something far more serious. new information on the horrific late night crash. two young women are dead and another in the hospital after the suv left the road and hit a brick embankment, which happened just after 3:00 this morning along university boulevard east. that's where lindsey mastis will be joining us live from the scene with the latest. >> reporter: friends say that the women were coming home from a party. that's where they were earlier. you can see where their vehicle went off the road here. it hit the fence and then it hit this brick embankment behind me. it killed two of the women here on scene. a third survived the crash. she's in the hospital.

everyone is devastated. tamara johnson was just 19. >> she was really sweet. she was like a model, she liked to dress up. >> reporter: the driver, 22. both died at the scene. detectives covered their body with white blankets. the only survivor is 18-year- old james. >> she's just in a lot of pain, but she should be okay. >> reporter: her twin sister says she knows what happened, but is having a hard time acknowledging the fact that her friends are gone. especially her best friend, tamara. >> she keeps saying, you know, she's not dead. one minute, you know, she's like where is she? i want to see her. >> reporter: during the crash they hit the bricks so hard that the suv crumbled. detectives are still piecing together what happened, where they were coming from, where they were going. why the vehicle left the road.

and they crashed just a mile and a half from her house. two young women are gone and another is forever changed. now, her family says that she is going to be just fine, but they don't know when she will be released from the hospital. we are also told that some friends and family are planning to get to the tonight. they want to hold a vigil here where the crash happened. i'm lindsey mastis, anita, back to you. >> okay, lindsey, thank you. meanwhile, police might never know exactly what triggered another deadly crash. it had one involving a metrobus -- this one involving a metrobus. it happened yesterday afternoon and collided with the metrobus. the driver of the pickup died. he is identified as the 49-year- old of silver springs. the bus driver is in the hospital with some serious injuries. police want to hear from anybody who witnessed the crash when it happened. less than a week to go before the iowa caucus. the race is still changing by

the day. danielle noddingham is in des moines where one candidate is now making his move from the back of the pack. >> reporter: some of them campaigned, finding new life leading into the state caucuses. >> i don't think i could say that. >> reporter: he signed autographs as iowa's latest rising star. >> it moved pretty quickly and dramatically. we feel like that could happen in new hampshire too and going forward. >> reporter: while they jumped to third in the latest poll, newt gingrich is fading. but he says he could be president obama. >> we could wage that campaign. which by october it is impossible to defend obama. >> reporter: volunteers for ron paul. the current number two are working the front runner, mitt romney's thunder. but romney says that iowa will make the right choice. >> that's one of the reasons why they are first because of the people in iowa, they pay attention. >> reporter: and that's why

they are expecting the record turnouts on tuesday. more than 100,000 iowans are expected to caucus at 800 schools, churches, and community centers around the state. the warren county chairman is holding one caucus at this future center. 77 residents showed up in 2008. this year it could be 100. >> i would like to make it so you're there with people. >> reporter: they will pack the room on tuesday. listen to speeches. then write their favorite on a simple ballot. that will be near the top. he said he does not know if he could win iowa. and he wants to help him finish strong. the attack ads are rolling on out faster now. especially for the new ads to hit the airways today along with the new radio ad.

and danielle noddingham, now back to you, derek. >> thank you. once the caucus goers cast their votes, they will tally that right up here and report it to the state's gop. a winner is usually announced just a couple of hours after the process begins. anita? the new year is likely to start with a big fight over taxes. today, the governor gave them a preview as to what to expect in 2012. we wanted to know what new taxes are being talked about. they found out that the governor is not shying away from those possibilities. a nickel here and a dime there. it all adds up. in 2012 here in annapolis, you can expect the bigger political battles over a lot more than loose change. >> but you get what you pay for. >> reporter: the governor reinstating his support for some kind of hike in maryland's 23 gas tax. >> there's no way to build a $100 million bridge for $10 million. there's no innovation that will allow it to happen. >> reporter: the gas tax has

not changed since 1992, but that's no excuse to raise it about 15 more cents a gallon, according to republican leaders. >> there are indeed a lot of people in pain and the idea that they will be able to afford additional taxes in this time of economic struggle is wrong. >> of course, it's not a good thing that we're spending more on fuel prices. >> i'll just need to take money from other places and put more money on my gas account to get to where i need to go. >> reporter: what really gets opponents here in maryland is that the money is suppose to pay for roads and bridges. but in the last three years, more than $1 billion of it has been used simply to balance the state's budget. o'malley points out that he has cut state spending by $6.8 billion since the recession started. now it's time to reinvest. >> a lot in the economy inquires modern investments to require jobs. that's not a democratic or republican idea. >> reporter: that will include the sewage fee known as the

flush tax and a proposed bag tax statewide. in a name of investment recovery in the environment, the government today did not say that he would stand in the way of any of them. in annapolis, scott broom, 9news now. >> you should know that they added a penny to the sale tax in 2007 to sure up the education spending. well, aaa is now out with their annual list of the best and the worst in the d.c. area traffic issues in 2011. ending expire tag arrests in d.c. new traffic safety laws in maryland. one surveyed found fewer distracted drivers out along the beltway. and the continuation of major road construction projects like the northern virginia hot lanes. now to the worst, gas prices reaching record numbers, a report that d.c. has the highest percentage of hit-and- run crashes in the nation.

with the estrange wife and stepson. both killings took place back on october and he went to the apartment in germantown where he had beaten and stabbed her and a few days later, he found little william's body in the woods in clarksburg. police believe that he crushed the boy's skull with a baseball bat. it shows if many some low -- in some local school systems as white students. places such as montgomery county, fairfax county, alexandria. why the significant gap? experts could only speculate among the possibilities from bias to differences in

classroom disciplinary styles. the local school leaders are are aware of the gap -- leaders are aware of the gap. family and friends of the texas teenager gathered today for his funeral in austin. and the rising star on youtube died on christmas day. but not before leaving behind a touching video that will reveal the rare health problem that took their life. anna werner has his story. >> hey guys, thanks for watching. >> reporter: for more than a year, the austin, texas teen had been cultivating a following on youtube with the whit and wisdom of someone far beyond his 18 years. >> what are your views? do you think that is an issue? >> that is the most joyful person that i ever knew. >> reporter: just before christmas, he made a different kind of video. still funny, but also terribly sad. ben shared with the world his personal struggle with a life threatening heart condition and how that challenged him every day of his life. >> it was about 13 months old

and he was taken to a cardiologist. they did some tests finding out he has a condition. >> a sickening of the heart muscles that will make it difficult for the heart to pump blood. and causes chest pains, high blood pressure, and eventually heart failure. ben details how he cheated death three times, at age 4 and again this month. paramedics had to revive him at school. >> i just asked him if he was happy that he woke up. he said, i guess. and he said that he was so glad to be back with our family, but that he just wanted to be back in that peace. >> reporter: shortly after ben returned to that peace, he passed away on christmas morning. while playing in the backyard with his younger brother. his family did not see the video until the following day. it was his last christmas present to them.

>> i was very proud of him for choosing to be so vulnerable and share something of himself that was so personal. >> reporter: and ben also left his followers and the world with a message of hope. ♪ [ music ] and it seems at least on youtube that the world was listening. offering ben something back. >> a brave kid who touched a lot of people. ben's video has been more than three quarter of a million times on youtube. >> and sure to be many times more. thanks, derek. well, still cleaning up from all that shake, rattle, and roll from that earthquake back in august? the federal government is now offering more disaster aid money to folks in virginia affected by the quake. the governor asked for and received money to help families in culpepper, a handful of other counties as well as the city of fredericksburg. the quake hit august 23.

icy slick roads caused dozens of accidents this morning around milwaukee. two semis rolled over on interstate 94 after freezing rain left a thin layer of ice on the freeway. in all, the authorities responded to 99 accidents, 33 cars in ditches, and one car in a light pole. that's icy weather. 17 people were hurt. but fortunately no one seriously. and a high wind warning was in effect today for parts of colorado. several gusts have reached hurricane-forced strength. one of them a 98 miles per hour look. in addition to getting all these strong winds, higher elevations are all expecting a few inches of snow, which is not bad. and here is something that you don't often see this time of the year. it is rain, but it is in fargo, north dakota. the wet weather caught a lot of people off guard, especially at the end of december when you know, they are used to using the shovels and umbrellas. some teenagers who decided to go skating, well, you know, a little slushy.

can you say that? >> yes. slushy. >> reporter: so we've got rain in fargo, snow around the metro. >> yeah, basically what happens is the area of low pressure around the great lakes. a little closer to the mid- atlantics with the flurries here today. >> yes. >> most of the mountains are getting most of the activity, but yeah, we're going to get milder conditions for them and for our area over the next few days into the holiday weekend. and then get ready for some arctic air to really make it feel like, you know, true winter has arrived come 2012. all right, we'll first talk about some of the snow that's still falling on out there. again, real light stuff. talking about flurries. go north around hagerstown to the mason/dixon line where you see that area in blue. we'll zoom in here. this is where you're seeing the light flurry actions. no major accumulations are expected. but you might encounter some of this the farther north you are here. this will be dying down the next couple of hours. you'll see mostly broader areas. you can see again, a little bit

of the flurry activity that will be right around the border here. then we're going to see a mostly cloudy condition for you overnight. and tomorrow, just a chance for, well, a passing isolated shower. right now, temperatures in the lower 40s. and that will be in arlington. 42 in d.c. 41 in college park. and davidson, they will also be in the lower 40s. we will all get down into the 30s once again overnight. so you know, mild over the next couple of days. then much colder. cloudy and cold tonight. and friday, mild with some clouds. new year's weekend, they are also mild. then dry arctic air arrives. not a bad idea to get out the humidifiers this weekend once you see our seven-day forecast. here is a look at your future cast. again, cloudy conditions for you overnight. we have a slight chance for a passing shower. and that will be the afternoon around the d.c. area. but most people will be staying dry. for tonight, mostly cloudy, cool. a two-blanket low in the 30s. around downtown, mid-30s. but lower 30s for leesburg.

winchester and fredericksburg right around the freezing mark. annapolis in the upper 30s close to 40 degrees. now in the mornings, they will start out partly cloudy, cold. bundle up once again. scarves, gloves, not a bad idea. temperatures in the 30s. the afternoon will be variable and cloudy and mild. again, isolated showers are possible. highs will be around. look at that, 55 degrees, south wind at 5 to 10. so cumberland is 51. and manassas near mid-50s downtown. temperatures in the mid-50s as well. 55 downtown. annapolis here, 56 degrees. here is how they break out. partly to mostly cloudy conditions. a little drop there and a chance for an isolated shower. here is your seven-day outlook. mild, look at that. they are looking pretty nice here. new year's day, upper 50s. then comes the cold air on monday and tuesday. the temperatures are in the low to mid-30s for you after the new year. and it is like you need to get out the humidifier. that's a dry system. you'll feel the impacts of the

caught on tape. in the colorado subdivision, surveillance video from the security camera shows the suv plowing into the dodge intrepid with enough force to shove it forward. 1.5 parking spaces. >> he was coming full speed ahead in the parking lane of the subdivision. and i watched him ram into the back of my car and drive off. and he did a u-turn in front of my neighbors and he came back. and u-turned again and ran my car intentionally. >> yeah, who knows what was going on there. this fellow is not done yet. plowing into at least five other cars in the neighborhood. finally the cops caught up with the 41-year-old. and the officers say he was driving on several flat tires and a bare room. what was up with this guy? well, nobody knows. and the cops are trying to

figure it out. check out this story, the visitor hopped the fence to get a personal look at the elephants. there she is. even close enough to pet them. the onlookers were yelling at them, get out of there. witnesses said that they were on out there for five minutes before finally leaving. and police, they took that woman into custody. and she is getting a mental evaluation. >> obviously that was not going to end well, but it turned out okay. >> yes, it sure did. and the dog owner called for help after the yellow lab falls right through the ice. >> it happened yesterday at grand junction, colorado. they were out on the walk around the pond when lumas decided to go out on thin ice. at first he tries to get her out at first, but it was just too dangerous. and he was treading for his life. you know the dog was getting real cold. eventually the rescue crew got there. they have the special gear, able to reach him, pull him out and he was able to shake off the cold. it looks like he's okay. >> yeah. in fargo, firefighters

rescued a black lab stuck on the ice near a golf course. the dog named jake in this case appeared to have been stuck on the edge of the ice trying to get back to shore. this is video taken from one of the firefighter's suits as he was pulling the dog to safety. jake was checked out and returned to his owner. jake got away because the invisible fence quit working. again, a warning to all dog owners at this time of the year. >> he probably won't need that invisible fence anymore. >> no. iran accuses the united states on spying in the persian gulf. and also ahead, the blockbuster cancer drug that just lost fda approvement for one is now disappointing another. we'll talk about it in the health alert. the biggest time of the year for the donations to get those in by the end of the year. i'm surae chinn with that story coming up.

cleaning. >> we cleaned out the house, the clothes. we got it to goodwill and one of the other donation centers. >> yes, very important. we need to get that donation back to you. >> the whole bedroom set. the mattress and a lot of pictures. >> reporter: she is unloading and making sure that she will get the good 2011 write off. >> nothing like a good tax credit. >> i don't know how much you could write that off for. but i'll give it my best shot. >> yes. >> and that will be at the goodwill location, the busiest and the top moneymaker in the metropolitan area. and for every $1 that's donated, $0.92 goes back to the actual cause of this donation, which is just job training and job creation. now, being a savvy donor takes a little homework to make sure that you're given to this great organization. be specific to your cause. for instance, instead of donating to a generic cancer charity, they make providing mammograms to disadvantage women. and make sure that the agencies

have the accountability and transparency. know how much is going to the ceo's overhead. >> check for us to make sure that it is a charitable organization. that there are a lot of businesses that are donating back here. that will certainly impact what they could write off as the tax deduction. >> yes, thank you. that's a benefit, but that's the point. it will help somebody out. that's one of the things that, you know, i have always thought to pass on what you can. >> reporter: and so having a little trouble adding up how much to put in and write off, well, the guidelines from goodwill, they have this list to check out. so if you are donating women's shirts and men's shirt, it will come at $2 to $3. shoes for $9. and the computer system, $50 to $250, not bad. and dressers are $20 to $60. and you'll be set for a full list as to what topped charities, how they are ranked. you can go to our website. so some interesting information about the charities. >> yeah, it is. i like that idea.

>> you need to do your homework. >> all right, thank you. let's go back to the studios. >> well thanks. and they said that they've got some video of the u.s. aircraft carrier right near the strategic waterway in the persian gulf. the country shot the photos during their naval drill. iran says this is the u.s. aircraft carrier spying on them. and the 10-day exercise for a straight move. the u.s. warned iran not to interfere with traffic in the strategic oil route. >> and that you can go. >> reporter: the iranian television says that, you know, the u.s. is not in a position to tell iran what to do. and people here, they say that they will approve of the military's action. this man says you'll know how strong our country is by watching the latest military drill. and iran threatened to close that after the european movements agreed to tighten

them over the nuclear program. >> and the u.s. navy is active in that area of the persian gulf. and so are several other countries that will be patrolling for pirates. kim jong was named the man. now the late kim jong-il. the official change of leadership admits to being pulled from power for another generation. that will be at the main square for the memorial. and it doubled with the show support to the new leaf. >> one person is dead after a fiery crash on the florida highway. and they said that three tractor trailers, the u.s. mail truck and a car all collided on i-95. take a look. one of them burst into flames and the video from the scene

shows the snow coming from the semi. now, that truck driver died. four other people were taken to the hospital. they were shut down on the emergency crews that cleared up the crash, still being investigated. it caused a deadly pile up in new orleans. and traffic came to a standstill on interstate 10 after 40 vehicles became involved in this early morning accident. and two people were killed. now, 22 others were taken to the hospital. some with critical injuries. about three dozen were treated at the scene. no word yet on what caused this tangled mess. >> if you're driving in the northeast corner this holiday weekend, you'll need a bit more change to drive through new jersey. tolls on the jersey turnpike and the parkway are going up by 50% on new year's day. and that means you'll pay $1.10 more per trip on the turnpike and at least $0.30 more. talk about a rough day on the roads.

in tonight's health alert, we are talking about disappointing news. in the two cities, just like today in the new england journal of medicine that told us about the ovarian cancer, pushing the survival and only kept that disease here for a few months. and they had that for the advancement of ovarian cancer.

moving in. new year's weekend is looking very mild and the dry arctic air will be arriving after that. here is a look at your future cast. so pretty uneventful tonight. a slight chance for the isolated passing shower. real light stuff. and otherwise, there will be a fairly variable cloudy day that we're going to call it. so far for tonight, mostly cloudy and cold. two blanket lows in the 30s. tomorrow morning, temperatures will be in the mid-30s around downtown to the lower 30s so bundle up if you're headed out here to see the post-christmas shopping. for the afternoon, variable cloudiness and mild again. isolated shower is possible. highs around 55 degrees. and here is a look at the seven- day forecast. it is mild, not only on friday, but on saturday as well. saturday is looking to be breezy. and new year's eve. it will be, i think, pretty mild, especially the earlier hours. it will be a little chilly. ladies, get the scarves out if you want to keep yourself warm if you'll be outside. new year's day, look at that in the upper 50s. and then the dry arctic air comes in on monday and tuesday
