increase in crime. >> but first tonight, dc police call out mayor gray over the occupy dc movement. the issue, your safety. this is 9news now. was it a lie or does he just not get it? that is what the chairman of dc's police union is asking our mayor, vince gray. >> that's right. ken molestina is live to explain why comments from the mayor have some of the rank and file officers very upset. ken. >> reporter: well, you know, at the center of this debate is a spike and crime here in the district that at least the chairman of the paternal order of police here in dc is linking directly to the occupy movement. but now he says mayor gray is making some comments that are just not true. dc's mayor vincent gray is being accused of making misrepresentations about a spike in crime. he was on a talk show two weeks ago. it was there that the chairman of the fraternal order of police tells us the mayor made remarks saying the occupy movement has not caused crime to rise.

gray is wrong. >> in fact, there has been a double digit increase in violent crime and overall crime in the city. >> reporter: as a result, they have sent a letter and supporting documents totaling 40 -- he says the spike is being seen in districts where officers are being pulled from to patrol the ok pierz. he says -- occupiers. >> this is on top of the fact we're down 400 police officers. >> reporter: crime is up across dc by 13%. he also says crime overall is up 10% since the occupation began in october. >> occupiers were quick to react after hearing the claims. >> they don't have to surveil us 24/7. we can take care of our steflz. >> reporter: it's unfair -- ourselves. >> reporter: it's unfair to peg it on the occupiers. >> which is worse? did the mayor really not know there is a double digit increase in crime or is he

misrepresenting the facts? i don't know which is worse, and i'm very interested to see what his response is. >> reporter: of course, we're also very interested to see what his response is. he is expected to respond to these allegations tomorrow at a news conference at 2:30 p.m. of course we'll let you know what he says. we're live in mcphearson's square with the occupiers. with all of the attention in the upcoming race going to the republican nomination, here is something to get the democrats buzzing. former labor secretary robert rice is predicting a hillary clinton and joe biden swap next year. clinton to run for vice president with barack obama. we nominated gary nurenberg for an up date. >> reporter: wright blogged on his website that president obama needs to stir the democratic base. and that clinton on the ticket would take attention away from the economy and towards foreign policy where he says the

president and secretary of state have shined. biden shot down similar speculation a year ago telling vanity fair he has already been asked to run again, but does the idea make sense? >> no, it doesn't. first of all, although there is precedent for dumping a vice president, there's not a lot of it. >> reporter: presidential scholar steven hess. >> the reason is pretty simple. where a president is running for reelection, they don't want to admit mistakes. and dumping your vice president would be considered a very big mistake. so that doesn't happen. but there is another reason as well. not only would obama retain joe biden, but he thinks joe biden is doing a very good job. and, in fact, he is doing a very good job by what vice presidents do, what presidents ask them to do, for the type of advice he's been giving the president, i would say that he's an asset politically. >> reporter: so we called the

vice president's office to say we want someone to talk about this. and we call hillary clinton's state department and say we want someone to talk about this. and at the end of the day, no one talked about this. derek and anita. >> all right, gary. thank you. now to the republicans less than a week before the iowa caucuses, the republican presidential race seems to be changing by the day. the latest poll shows mitt romney as the front runner with ron paul right behind him. but rick santorum has moved up to third while newt gingrich has moved into fourth. kent sorenson has now defected to one of her biggest rivals ron paul. >> in 2010 i was running for the state senate congressman paul came and did three separate events for me and i felt like he was by my side and i had a tough break. now it's my duty to be by my side. >> kent sorenson told me he was

paid a lot of money to go to the ron paul campaign. >> once they cast their ballots tuesday night, they're all tallied up in the room and the reports given to the gop. it's announced a couple hours after the process begins. new at 11:00, an attorney is taking it upon himself to try to get newt gingrich on the ballot in march. he failed to get the necessary 10,000 signatures to make the list of republicans running for president. jonathan moseley has contended that many signatures were improperly thrown out. he is acting independently of the newt gingrich campaign. meanwhile, rick perry has lost his bid. they declined perry's request for an emergency order requesting his name appear on the ballot. the ballot requirements are overly burdensome and unconstitutional. the judge will hear more

arguments on the case january 13th. virginia governor bob mcdonald has approved new abortion clinic regulations but they argue they will put clinics out of business. they require existing clinics to meet the same building regulations as a hospital. it will help ensure the safety and well-being of patients, but many of the rules are unnecessary for safety and could force a lot of those clinics to close down because they are expensive. well, now over to maryland where the new year will likely bring a big fight over the t word. that is taxes. but governor martin o'malley says he won't shy away from proposing a tax hike here or there without getting into specifics. the governor gave reporters a preview of what they can expect in 2012, and he restated his support for some sort of increase in the state gasoline tax which has not changsd since 1992. >> -- changed since 1992. >> there is no way to build a

$100 billion bridge. there is nothing in the arsenal to allow that to happen. a state-wide tax on shopping bags, but some state lawmakers told us in these tough economic times, there is not much public support for any tax hike. tonight montgomery county police are trying to figure out what caused a violent car accident that left one young woman in the hospital and two others in the morgue. it happened at 3:00 in the morning along university avenue east in silver spring. the suv left the road, hit a fence and smashed into an embankment surrounded by brick. part of the car flew into a tree and power lines. the driver, 22-year-old jenice richard and passenger tamara johnson died at the scene. only 18-year-old desaleen jones survived. she knows what happened but is having a hard time realizing her friend is gone. >> she keeps saying she's not dead and one minute she wants to see tamara. she is just in a lot of pain,

but she should be okay. police don't know at this time if alcohol or excessive speed were factors in the crash. now to the latest on another deadly accident. this one involving a metro bus. montgomery county police say a 49-year-old was driving a pickup truck when he crossed the median on rockville pike in bethesda and collided with the bus. it happened yesterday afternoon right at the start of rush hour, shutting down rockville pike. edward died while nearly a dozen other people were hurt. police aren't sure what triggered the collision, and they're asking any witnesses to please give them a call. tonight questions about the way metro has been using some of its increasingly scarce dollars. an internal report shows a former manager hired a colleague to help clean up the image. the marketing exec paid a salary

of 140 grand plus relocation expenses. what's more, the only proof of the work done, a single banner that has since been removed. and the price tag for the banner, 50,000 bucks. >> it kind of disturbs me. i'm out here working for a living and breaking my back every day trying to scratch together enough money to keep my home and keep my family intact and you have these kind of perks and things going on. >> metro tells us the events outlined in that report date all the way back to 2007 and the key people involved no longer work for metro. whether it is pure generosity or simply just a way to save money on your taxes next year, many local charities are seeing a rush in donations over the last several days. the good will store on glebe road in arlington is the top money maker and busiest in the metro area. of each dollar donated, $0.92 goes right back into the cause of the organization which is training and job creation. and before you make a donation to any organization, make sure

germany. we're saying a big hello and merry christmas to uncle bob. caught on tape, a one man demolition derby. a home surveillance camera catches a man slamming his suv right into the back of the parked car. then he drives away. but he doesn't go far. that same driver rammed into at least four more parked cars and trucks in that neighborhood and investigators believe he did it all intentionally. at the end of the rampage, he was driving on flat tires and a bare rim. not too hard for the cops to catch him. and something else easy to catch. confetti was falling all over new york's time square. organizers for the big new year's eve celebration performed what they call an air worthiness test for the confetti they plan to use this coming weekend. and, yes, gravity still works, even in these tough economic times. at midnight new year's eve, one ton of this stuff will rain down and they may be cold and chilly. >> uh-huh. so we all wish for the weekend to get here a little faster, and for some people in

the south pacific it will. when it turns midnight on the island of somia, they'll skip saturday and go straight to sunday. it will put some closer. its neighbor will not be making the change. >> you guys are doing a heck of a job reporting the snow out here in leesburg. >> yes. some serious sarcasm there. all jokes aside, it was a bit of a surprise to see snow today. places like leesburg got a light dusting of snow. >> and not even forecasted. >> it was a little surprising. the area of the low pressure over the great lakes came in a little closer to the mid-atlantic. we got some residual flurries from it. >> we understand now. >> and i hope you saw it. because we're never going to see snow ever again at this rate. >> oh, come on.

let's take a look at some of the pictures we saw that came in from some of our viewers where we did see some light dusting of surprise snow. this picture was sent in. you can see a little falling and accumulating on her deck. also donna sent in this picture as well. you can see it's on her driveway. and cascade, maryland is around 1500 feet in elevation. it's really not that high. here is a look at doppler radar where it's really quiet. this year showing some moisture. i don't think all of this is hitting the ground because the air is so dry. but we can see some flurry activity just north of baltimore. also around the mason-dixon line. we can still see flurries around town. we might see some again tomorrow night. so it's a slight chance, but the chance is there. right now temperatures 42 in downtown. we'll cool down a little bit more into the mid 30s. gaithersburg down to 36. winchester 32. i don't think most places will cool down that much more. in fact, most of us should be in

the 30s. we won't be seeing 20s like early this morning. the national picture, here is our next system in the plains dropping in some snow in north dakota and then also south and then parts of the upper midwest we're looking at the showers. this will eventually make its way over, maybe giving us some showers on friday night. late friday night. we're talking light stuff. here is a look at the satellite radar for our area where we just see some scattered flurries go through the area earlier this evening. now, we're expecting mild conditions with some clouds friday. hard to believe after these chilly temperatures. new year's eve forecast, it is looking mild. i think some places could get to even 60 over the weekend. then after that, arctic cold air arrives. a big change in the temperature. i would say get out the humidifiers this weekend, because you may want to be using them next week with that cold air coming in. here is a look at the future cast. no problem overnight. you may see a couple flurries the farther north and west you are of town, but it's not going

to accumulate for most areas. friday morning we'll see partly cloudy to mostly cloudy conditions. variable cloudiness. and then friday night i think we have a slight chance for some isolated showers. really light stuff. maybe flurries possible. but, again, nothing accumulating. saturday similar situation. also may pick up some more snow west of of the divide out towards oakland and petersburg where we can see more white stuff. overnight, cloudy not as cold. scattered showers possible. south winds at 5-10. tomorrow morning bundle up. partly cloudy and cold in the 30s. but dress in layers because by the afternoon it's going to be mild. and a high of 50-55 degrees. cumberland 49. winchester 51. hagerstown 50. leesburg lower 50s. manassas also in the lower 50s. we should be low 40s this time of year. annapolis 54.
