chesapeake bay bridge and $36 on i 95. rates for cars and two axle vehicles went up in november. another toll hike comes in july 2013. the new year also brings a new tax to montgomery county. anyone shopping in the county will now be asked for they would like a bag. if they say yes they'll pay 5 kenseth for every paper or plastic bag. the county will collect 4 cents out of every nickel. the money is expected to be used to help fight pollution. the extra penny will be given to retailers. montgomery county police are trying to determine the cause of a crash which killed two people and left three others injured. it happened early sunday morning in bethesda as jonathan cost intells us people who live near the crash site say the road is extremely dangerous. >> reporter: inside this white suv were five young people but only three survived a crash. it happened near lancaster

drive. somehow the driver lost control, left the road, crashed through a fence and ultimately crashed into a tree. this happened just three hours into a brand new year. >> i was in bed and i heard like screeching brakes and like bang. crumpling of metal. and i was thinking oh my gosh, i hope no one got hurt. but obviously they did. >> reporter: the folks in this neighborhood say jones bridge road is certainly no stranger to fatal wrecks. in fact just a few yards from this morning's accident, you can find flowers, a memorial for another accident. judith heart monday has lived near jones bridge road for nearly 40 years. she says an island in the road has helped to cut down but it isn't enough. >> the curves are deceiving. they don't look severe but they throw drivers off. if they are going a little bit too fast or are not aware of

the curves. >> reporter: so the investigation continues. >> speed, alcohol related, distracted all those could be factors inn collision and they are certainly looked at in any fatal collision. >> so police have a tough task of figuring out what happened. 9news now. an elderly couple remains hospitalized after being hit by a car yesterday morning. police say 77-year-old john whalen and his wife, dorothy, were walking on a sidewalk in kensington when they were hit. the driver of the car, mary ann harrington, was taken to the hospital with non life threatening injuries. the light traffic you enjoyed last week will soon be a thing of the past. especially in virginia. in addition to the regular return to work for people off for the holidays, the marks center will be fully occupied beginning tomorrow, tuesday,

trillion. a massive manhunt is underway in washington state for a began man who killed a park ranger during a routine traffic stop sunday. police believed 24-year-old benjamin colton barnes is also a person of interest in a shooting in a new year's eve party which injured four people. 4-year-old margaret anderson was the mother of two young daughters. anderson's husband who was always a park ranger. police in los angeles have released surveillance video of a person of interest in a rash of arson fires in the city. detectives are investigating more than three dozen suspicious blazes, most of them set in parked cars since thursday. the redskins disappointing 2011 season is mercifully over. the team's final game was pretty much a reflection of the entire

time now is 9:40. i'm olga breeze in for howard bernstein this morning. temperatures near 40 degrees at reagan national airport, but it is feeling more like the 20s in and around town with the wind chill. winds this morning are at 15 to 20 miles per hour. but these gusts at 25, 26 miles per hour definitely making it feel much colder than that. our day planner features, a lot of sunshine earlier on in the morning. 40s later afternoon. we will start to build in a little more cloud cover.

street today. the markets are closed. on friday the markets finished 2011 on a down note. the dow fell 6 points to end the year at 12217. overall the dow was up 5 and a half%. meantime the nasdaq fell 8 points friday and was down nearly 2% last year. the top star for the dow mcdonald's up more than 30%. bank of america was the worst performing stock in 2011, dropping nearly 60%. a.m. r is being dropped from the stock market this week. the company has declared bankruptcy and its stock prices closed under $1. now the new york stock exchange is pulling it. in europe raising taxes for pay for a larger than expected budget deficit. the new prime minister is maintaining a freeze on practically all government

now. again happy new year to you. 4:45. you are going to find a change if you have to step outside this morning after the mild temperatures over the weekend. you need a big coat today. >> definitely. you might want gloves too. we have a bit of a breeze working this morning. it hasn't been so brisk just yet, but we will start to crank up the winds later on this afternoon. a blustery day today. even more so tomorrow as well. here's how we are looking so far. we definitely have quieted down on satellite and radar. some of us did see a few sprinkles yesterday. all of that has moved off the coast. what we are left with right now is partially clear skies. we have a few high, thin includes early on this morning. officially partly cloudy for this afternoon and evening. we'll move our temperatures out of our current 30s by the afternoon. we'll hit into the 40s and yes a high today of around 44 degrees around the 3:00 hour. then later on tonight, we start to plummet with the

temperatures. the colder air is starting to filter in. most of that will come overnight tonight, when our lows start to get down into the 20s after midnight. and it is definitely going to be a very brisk start to your tuesday morning. once the colder air locks in, it is going to stay with us for the next three days. here's how we are look go on satellite and radar. so far so good for this region. we see some snow into the mountains, mainly off toward west virginia and maryland as well it will be a breezy day today, hold on to your hats. the increasing clouds in the afternoon you will notice. still our daytime highs will be right around average. most of us will get into the lower 40s. hold on for that arctic blastton. that is when we really get some of the coldest air we have seen in quite sometime and once it locks in for both tuesday and wednesday, we will have those blustery conditions continuing. so outside right now, be prepared for temperatures in the 30s for the most part. as you head out and about in

your day. afternoon and evening hours it will be much colder than that. we are definitely seeing a bit of a wind chill. because of the winds reagan international is feeling more like 33-degree. here's what futurecast has to say about the next 48 hours. fairly quiet to start us out for the morning. high, thin clouds later on today, it is going to filter out some sunshine and hold our temperatures down into the lower 40s for most of the metro area. into the overnight, we'll clear out a little bit allowing us to plummet temperatures down into the 20s. we could see the flurries off into the western locations early on tuesday morning. our highs are looking pretty good. 38 across frederick. close to 40 degrees north and west of town. more like the lower 40s for washington toward southern maryland. in toward eastern maryland as

and especially the christmas trees. but today the last glowing filaments of that living room power house are burning out. federal law will require all light bulbs to be 25% more efficient. flipping the switch to its more frugal counterparts like the long lasting compact fluorescent. >> you might install a light bulb your foyer when your kids are born and that might be still working no problems when the kids go off to college. >> reporter: not everybody is thrilled with the change. for one thing the alternatives are more expensive up front. concerns over prices have even reached the campaign trail. >> i believe in liberty for light bulbs. many consumers complain the newer bulbs just don't look right. >> there is a push back from a lot of people who say i'm  sitting in my living room. i want a warm, comfortable light. i want it to be that is the word

in december republicans in congress managed to eliminate all funding to enforce the new law, which was signed in 2011 by then president bush. young people with type one diabetes may be struggling to get a good night's sleep. researchers suggest that may be leading to bigger problems. a study found young diabetics ages 10-16 spent more time in lighter stages of sleep than children without diabetes. the lack of sleep can lead to behavior problems for school grades and make it tougher to control higher blood sugar levels. kids should get a doctor's help to make sure they are getting proper rest. taking cholesterol lowering drugs called stat tins may offset the risk of dying from prostate cancer. new jersey researchers found hundreds of middle aged men they found men who died of prostate cancer were half as likely to have taken stat tins at the time. studies suggest a link between

controlling cholesterol and surviving disease. memory loss in the elderly may be due to what are called silent strokes. a new report from the american academy of neurology looked at hundreds of elderly men and women. brain scans revealed many of them are experienced silent strokes, resulting in small pockets of dead brain cells. the seniors also performed poorly on memory exams. farmers in india are banking on a new kind of strawberry. the bear ries can be modified so they contain significantly less sugar. it is time to look at the question of the morning. americans collectively eat 100 pounds of this every second. is it a, chocolate, b, hamburgers, c, french fries? sounds like a great meal. log onto the wusa 9
