including river road. 50 in maryland. your next traffic coming up at 50:00. jessica, andrea, back to you. police are investigating the first deadly crash of the year in montgomery county. >> reporter: two young people died just hours after the new year began. 9news now reporter jonathan cost inhas the story. >> reporter: inside this white suv were five young people but only three survived the crash. it happened along a curve at jones bridge road. somehow the driver lost control, left the road and crashed through a fence on the bethesda naval medical center property. this happened just three hours into a brand new year. >> i heard screeching brakes. i heard like bang. the crumpling of metal. i was thinking oh my god, i hope no one gets hurt. >> reporter: the folks who live in this neighborhood say jones bridge road certainly no

strange stranger to fatal wrecks. in fact a few yards from this morning's accident you can find flowers, a memorial for another accident. judith wharton has lived near the road. she says an island cut down on accidents but it isn't enough. >> the curves are deceive. they don't -- are deceiving. they don't look severe. they are going too fast or are not aware. >> is he the investigation continues. >> speed, alcohol related, distracted. all those could be factors in any collision. they are certainly looked at in every fatal collision but i can't speak about the specifics to this one. >> police have the tough task of figuring out what happened. police have not yet identified the victims in that crash. also on the road, an elderly couple is hospitalized with life threatening injuries after a

car struck them in kensington, maryland. it happened around 10:00 sunday morning on summit avenue. 77-year-old john whalen and his wife, dorothy, were walking on a sidewalk when they were hit. dorothy was taken to the hospital with non life threatening injuries. police are trying to determine what caused harrington's vehicle to leave the road. there were no new year's celebrations at one nightclub in northwest washington. dc police chief kathy lien near ordered a four day closing of the mood lounge after two stabbings outside the club early friday morning. the chive used the emergency suspension of liquor licenses act to shut the club down. now the district's alcohol control board will decide whether the club can reopen. the time right now, almost 5:05. that makes it time for the latest your money report of the

morning. u.s. markets are closed today. the new year brings a new tax on disposable bags. they now cost a nickel for each paper or plastic bag you carry out of the store or restaurants. >> reporter: some people call ruth the bird lady. she is an or owner of the animal exchange. she will have to charge her customers, starting in the new year. i think it will some what offend my customers when they have to pay a nickel for a bag. i think they'll do it, with the exception that the fact the economy what it is now, people who are buying birdseed in a bag used to buy that much and now this much. throughout montgomery county you can see signs posted keep the change. bring your own bag. county leaders voted for the tax to cut down to littering and polluting the waterways. that is all the more reason

when temperatures go down into the 20s. beverly? >> olga, we are looking good. a light volume around town thanks to the federal holiday. busier travel along the interstate. 95 corridor looking good heading north into springfield with the hov lanes in your favor. 395 virginia beltway no early problems. 66 or around maryland to report at this time. jessica, back to you. thank you beverly. making news now at 50:00. police in washington state are looking for the gunman who murdered a national park ranger. 34-year-old margaret anderson was shot sunday in a roadblock. she had set up the roadblock to catch a driver who fled from a nearby traffic stop and officers couldn't reach her quickly because the gunman kept shooting at arriving patrol cars. a person of interest that i string of weekend arsons. more than 40 vehicles have been set on fire since friday

morning. in some cases the flames spread to nearby buildings. so far no one has been hurt. a $60,000 reward is being offered in the case. tomorrow republicans in iowa will cast their baal lots in that -- ballots in that state's caucuses. the latest poll shows massachusetts governor mitt romney leading but followed closely by ron paul and rick santorum. we'll take a closer look at the caucus coming up in our next half hour. plus a look at why more americans are staying away from movie theaters. at 5:35, apple accelerates its plans to release the ipad 3 and brace yourself for a cold snap. details in the 7-day forecast, next at 5:15.

good morning. thank you for watching 9news now. it is 5:00 a.m. glad you could be here with us. olga breeze is in for howard bernstein. boy do we have some breezes out there. >> this is really a taste of what's to come even more for us, this is tomorrow like our pre show. exactly. we are actually going to be seeing the coldest air coming in later on tonight. some of it is here right now although our day planner is going to stay on the chilly side. we will get sunshine working early morning heading into

sunrise and just into midday. more sun over clouds. clouds will overtake us by late this afternoon. that means our daytime high should be right around average the early morning average should see temperatures into the 30s. if you are stepping out early this morning to get everything done by midday. we are actually pretty comfortable into the lower 40s. it is going to feel cooler. winds are out of the north and northwest. they will continue by tonight temperatures cool off dramatically after sunset. we slide back into the 30s by the 6:00 hour. here are your weather headlines. here's what you need to know for the next 24 hours. a breezy and cold start for the day and more winds later on this afternoon. we'll definitely see the cloud cover begin to increase later on today as well as the arctic blast. it will be colder for tuesday

and wednesday still. so brace yourself for the impact of that as we head toward the work week. a lot of folks have the day off. more of us would be heading back to work and school, certainly for tomorrow. forecast for today will continue with the significant wind gusts through much of the morning. even into the late afternoon. already seeing 30 miles per hour wind gusts across gaithersburg ag. heavy wind gusts through andrews air force base and that will be the norm for today. satellite and radar predictions bringing in the colder air from canada. now that that door has been opened for us, it will start to settle on in today, tomorrow, even on wednesday. it will still be pretty much of an arctic chill. high pressure starts to take over later on in the week that. means the 7-day forecast will feature a little bit of improvement. the time goes by. you can see on our national map

exactly where the colder air is sitting. 11 in bismarck. colder in minneapolis. tomorrow morning, and the morning after that. beltway temperatures right now don't look too bad. we haven't really bottomed out just yet this morning. we are sitting at 37 across arlington and upper 30s for most of the region. feeling like the 30s because of the wind chill. with those northwest winds. the futurecast forecast model does bring in a little bit of cloud cover from time to time. all the moisture staying off toward our west so we are not going to see any rain or snow in the forecast today. we could see snow flurries early tuesday morning. let's get to that extended forecast for you. basically for the next three days, we are looking very, very cold. very windy. blustery conditions tuesday and wednesday. a few early morning flurries on tuesday morning. we will turn the corner by wednesday. we'll get our temperatures thursday back in the 40s.

navy federal credit union. good morning. welcome back to 9news now on this holiday, celebrating the new year. although it is day two of the new year. i'm andrea reason. >> i'm jessica doyle, mike hydeck is off today. thanks for joining us this morning. it is olga breeze time, she is in for howard. >> reporter: that's right. a little bit cold this morning but at least though, we are starting to feel a little bit of the breeze outside. i have been talking about the wind gusts all morning long and it is definitely continuing. we have partly cloudy skies this morning. clear areas as well allowing our temperatures to drop down into the 30s for most of us. right about 40 degrees in town because of our brisk northwest wind fro. we are going to continue to have wind chills for the 30s.

although our high after 3:00 or 4:00 we should make it into the lower 40s. it will feel like the 30s for most of the day today to keep that in mind as you are out and about. the next three days are going to be very cold. 44 today struggling to get to 32, 33 degrees for tomorrow. in the early morning hours, we could see snowflakes or flurries on your tuesday morning commute. not expecting any accumulation however but the cold air stays in place through wednesday and even in part of thursday. we will see a little bit of a turn around in that 7-day forecast, beverly? >> reporter: thanks to the federal holiday, not many folks going to work, but if you are, you get a break. no problem heading west of college park. university boulevard and into bethesda. for that matter 95 between the capital and the baltimore beltway. checks in all right. south of town wilson bridge, i-270 corridor has been in good shape. 395 northbound. incident free heading toward

evangelical voters. a group that made up half of iowa's caucus voters two years ago. in other news, the virginia governor supports changing the state's primary laws but it can't happen before this year's presidential elections. that comes after both newt gingrich and rick perry filed law challenges to their exclusions from the ballot. in a statement he says after working through different scenarios with leaders to attempt to make changes in time for the 2012 presidential election, my concern grows that we can't find a way to make such changes fair to the romney and paul campaigns that qualified even with virginia's burdensome system. he says he will vigorously support efforts to reduce the hurdles for the virginia ballot but not this year. two young people are dead and three more injured after a

new year's day crash. police are trying to figure out exactly what happened in the early morning wreck in bethesda. 9news now reporter delia has more. >> reporter: it is a terrible story. but good news. we are live outside of suburban hospital this morning where 2002 young people are recovering. but it is safe to say, several families are living through a nightmare this morning. take a look at this horrific scene. a crash happened just before 3:00 a.m. new year's morning on jones bridge road at lancaster drive. the driver of the chevy blazer lost control, crashed through a fence before colliding head on, into a tree. a young man in the passenger seat lost his life and so did a young woman sitting in the back. the 22-year-old driver was flown to baltimore shock trauma, where he is recovering there. and the two lucky passengers. both men ages 18 and 19 are

here, treated for non life threatening injuries. >> the curves are deceiving because they don't look severe. but they throw drivers off. they lose control of the car if they are going a little bit too fast or are just not aware of the curves. >> we should tell you police say it is unclear at this point it is unclear if that crash was caused by speed or alcohol or some other factors. they continue to update you as soon as we have more information. andrea? >> as people start returning to work later this week, one traffic trouble spot could get especially ugly. after today's federal holiday the final employees being transferred to the mark center will arrive at the complex. that is the new building off 395 and seminary road in all. 6400 workers were moved there as part of the base realignment

off. but we are here. olga has a forecast you won't believe, after last week. >> yeah, we have that springtime weather rolling in through here. we closed out the year looking fantastic with the temperatures 60, 62. in fact we have taken a turn in the opposite direction. this morning we are dealing with pretty brisk winds, but mainly clear conditions. so it is going to be i think a pleasant start to the morning. blustery as we go through midday and late day. the day planner is on target. right now in the 30s. we are going to hold into the upper 30s, lower 40s. our highs today should be close to average, around 44 degrees what we are expecting at reagan national airport by the 3:00 hour. then things will start to take a turn. we are going to bring the temperatures down overnight tonight into the 20s. definitely a cold night tonight and a very cold start to your tuesday morning. some of the coldest air we have seen in quite sometime.

the weather headlines keep the breezes around today out of the west and northwest. 20 miles per hour winds, the wind gusts at 35 miles per hour. the afternoon clouds will start to roll on through. officially we are calling it partly cloudy for today, we'll have the ark tick blast tonight as the temperatures really do take the turn. over the couple of days, the cool air is going to take place but eventually we will improve as we get to the end of the week forecast. the wind gusts were pretty hefty. we are still seeing wind gusts well up into the 20s across andrews air force base. the forecast for today though does feature colder, drier air. you can always tell how dry the air is by looking at our dew point numbers. as they get down to the teens and 20s. you want to break out that humidifier and help improve the air conditions particularly inside your homes and offices. for today our forecast will call for the very cold start as you

step out at reagan national airport right now. we have been holding at 40 degrees for the last two and a half hours. it is feeling more like 30s as you step out. we have a mix of sun and clouds, particularly into the afternoon hours. cloud cover moving on through. we still look good by the 5:00 hour. overnight tonight we'll keep the moisture away from now. we could see a snowflake or flurry begin to move on through as the moisture gets close and closer. as we start to get that cold air. tomorrow's high only making it to about 30 degrees. about 42 to 43 degrees across reagan national airport. the lows overnight tonight only into the 20s. the shocker comes with tomorrow's high only at 33 degrees. definitely a cold stretch ahead

there is now a $60,000 reward by helping to catch an arsonist in los angeles. police are seeking a person of interest in the case. >> reporter: dressed in all black and walking with a limp, this man may be connected to the string of suspicious fires in los angeles. he was caught on surveillance video near two of the fires. over the last three nights, more than 40 vehicles have been set ablaze. mark cooper's carport was one of the latest hit. people were getting out of the shower. they had a festive mood. suddenly the flames were shooting up two stories high. >> reporter: his parking lot is filled with ash and he says he is filled with fear. >> very uneasy. >> reporter: this woman was brought to tears after seeing her second story home destroyed. her neighbor, eloise renteria

lost her car. >> it is terrifying and harry potter breaking to think i almost lost my life and so did my family. >> reporter: in nearly every case the vehicles set on fire were parked under car ports like this allowing the flames to turn structures into ash and even attack nearby apartment buildings. >> reporter: authorities believe the fires are related. >> because of commonalitity -- commonality in the mode of ignition we believe it is the same people. >> reporter: the fires have not claimed any lives, but hundreds of thousands of dollars of property have been damaged or destroyed. making news now at 53:50, iran is rattling the sabre again after twice threatening to shut down the strait. sunday iran's navy test fired a new, medium range missile, which can evade radar.

welcome back. i'm olga breeze, in for howard bernstein this morning. we have cold temperatures sitting in the 30s for most of us. when you factor in the wind, winds out of the northwest at 10 to 15 miles per hour at this hour, it is making it feel like the 20s in and around the region. so definitely bundle up as you are stepping out. the forecast will remain very cold today, a lot of sunshine in the morning. we'll build in partly cloudy skies through midday and late

afternoon. don't expect too much for our highs only making it to 42 or 44 degrees. very cold down into the 20s for early tomorrow morning. jessica, andrea. so far dethrowning tom cruise from the top of the box office has been mission impossible. >> the fourth film in the series, i think grossed more than $31 million this weekend. the third mission impossible movie did not open as strongly when it came out in 2006. the next two movies held their spots from the last few weeks. alvin and the chipmunks chip wrecked. >> pretty good. the kids love it. war horse came in fourth, it opened christmas day and the girl with the dragon tattoo rounds out the top five. the movie industry is hoping for a better 2012. many types of films that have traditionally succeeded at the

box office. many americans now refuse to pay high prices for tickets. they are sitting in front of their screen at home instead. >> there is something about sitting in the dark. sticky floors and the overpriced munchies that still makes going to the movies magic. but accepting a mission impossible with tom cruise or others is turning some fans into home bodies have we are watching more and more at home. >> we just got a new couch so we could watch at home and be comfortable. home theaters are fast becoming the cheaper theater alternatives. >> that is compelling. one of the gurus of gadgets says with ticket prices what they are, a home theater system can now pay for itself faster
