drive. a front seat passenger and a passenger in the back seat were killed. this is a sad story that's been repeated since the end of last year. >> absolutely. we spoke to a nurse manager who came out here and she says you see this repeatedly. you talk to your young people. you tell them if you are ever in trouble give us a call. however we should preface that by saying we don't know exactly how these young people found themselves in this situation. what led to the crash. certainly a tragic start to the new year for the families involved, five young people were in that car, three of them survived. two are here being treated at suburban hospital. look at these horrific pictures at jones bridge road at lancaster drive. the driver of the chevy blazer lost micrel. the sufficient uhobbed the curb and crashed through a fence on

the bethesda naval property. that vehicle struck a tree head on the 22-year-old man who was driving that vehicle now getting life saving treatments in baltimore after being flown to shock trauma. the other two men ages 18 and 1 here at suburban with non life threatening injuries. >> screeching brakes i heard and and then i heard like bang the crumpling of metal. >> neighbors woke to that frightening noise. when you hear that noise you know it is unfortunately not good news. a lot of neighbors even said they felt their houses shake. they thought a roof collapsed nearby. that was a fourth of that car slamming into that tree and then erupting and crumpling into just a mess of mangled car at that point. we know the two young people who

died were actually killed instantly there at the scene. police are mentioning they are trying to figure out what happened. if speed, alcohol or a distraction was a cause into this crash. this is the second accident in less than a week that took the lives of young adults. 22-year-old i can't niece richards and 19-year-old tamara johnson were killed this past thursday after the suv smashed into a brick retaining wall. 18-year-old deteen john mccain was the only survivor of a crash. the cause of that accident is still under investigation. an elderly couple is hospitalized with life threatening injuries. investigators say just after 10:00 a.m. yesterday morning on summit avenue, mary ann harrington lost control of her car and she hit 77-year-old

black, and walking with a limp, this man may be connected to the string of suspicious fires in los angeles. police say he was caught on surveillance video near two of the fires. over the last three nights, more than 40 vehicles have been set ablaze. mark hooper's carport was one of the latest hit. >> 8:00 new year's eve, people were just getting out of the shower. they had their music up, they were in a very festive mood and suddenly flames two stories high. >> reporter: his parking lot is now filled with ash. he said he is filled with fear. >> very uneasy. you don't know where or when it is going to happen again. >> reporter: this woman was brought to tears after seeing her second story home destroyed. her neighbor, eloise renteria, lost her car. >> reporter: in nearly every case the vehicles set on fire

were parked under car ports like this. allowing the flames to spread quickly. authorities won't go into detail about the cause of the fires. but believe they are related. >> because of the commonality in the mode of ignition, we believe that it is the same individual. >> reporter: the fires have not claimed any lives. but hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of property have been damaged or destroyed. a squirrel monkey is back at the san francisco zoo. banana sam was found saturday evening in stern grove park. a park visitor noticed the 17-year-old monkey and lured him into a backpack. banana sam was stolen thursday after thieves cut through a gate. now security has been beefed up. for the second new year's in a row dead birds have littered

the streets of bee bee, arkansas. authorities say 100 dead black birds were found far less than the thousand found last year. fireworks set off on new year's eve is being blamed for the death. the state game and fish commission said someone appears to have targeted black bird groups. howard is off. he will be back tomorrow but in for him today is olga breeze. she has a cool start to the week. i think it wouldn't be so bad because of the temperatures. they are in the upper 30s near 40 degrees. that is what is making it feel much, much colder. winds at this hour are right around 15 miles per hour. we are going to ramp those up later on this afternoon. heavy gusts as well. for your planning purposes today, make sure you have a good layer as you step on out this morning. we are right around 38, 39 degrees at this hour. we are going to hover in this range for the next several.

here's how we are looking wind gusts for the rest of the region. we have seen 26 miles per hour wind gusts through reagan national airport and even 36 miles per hour winds moving on through the air force base. high pressure is settling into the central portion of the u.s. we are quiet on satellite and radar through the central portion of the u.s. however as the system moves closer and closer to us, that is what is cranking up our winds. colder air off to the north. when the front slides on through it is opening the way for all of us to move on down through your region. again it is going to stick around through the afternoon hours through tomorrow. we'll even see cold conditions. beltway temperatures are cold to start with. the futurecast is going to keep the sun around. we will have a little bit of a warm-up through midday and late afternoon.

the chevy blazer left the roadway somehow crashing through the fence before slamming head on into a tree. a young passenger seated in the back seat died instantly. the driver is at baltimore shock trauma receiving life treatment there. neighbors tell us that stretch of road is very treacherous. >> the curves are deceiving because they don't look severe. but they throw drivers off and they lose control of the car if they are going a little bit too fast or are just not aware of the curves. >> still lots of unanswered questions this morning, though lots of heartbreak. on those with those families to our suffering through this tragic loss of the two young people and prayers for the three who are in the hospital this morning. police are still trying to determine what caused this

good morning, welcome back to 9news now. happy new year you the new year will bring some cold temperatures this morning. >> cold, windy, at least we are dry. >> i am thankful for that. unfortunately, not in the mountains. the mountain range has seen some snow earlier this week. flakes in our area for this week we are looking at a very cold and blustery start to your monday morning. a lot of folks do have this as their official day off for the new year. stay right there. if you step outside maybe you have to get that paper this morning or take the dog out for a walk, bundle up. clear skies through midmorning and the winds kicking up out of the west and northwest at 15 to 20 miles per hour.

regular winds were already feeling quite a bit of a wind chill. feeling more like the 30s right now. mainly clear skies through midday. we will build in the cloud cover late in the day. partly cloudy skies. after sunset, temperatures go down very, very quickly. through the 40s and 30s and 20s for overnight lows for the nigh. very cold and presencesy day today. we won't have any wind advisoryize. it is the gusts from time to time. it could be up to 35 miles per hour. it is going to give us an opportunity to bring in more cloud cover by late afternoon. then we are looking at the arctic blast coming through with the cold front today. very cold conditions overnight into the 20s and even teens in the suburban areas. today it is sticking around

tomorrow into midweek. there will be a little bit of an improvement. here's how we look on our satellite radar scan. the snowy precipitation out to the mountains is not making it past the blue ridge to us. we will see a little bit of a drier air coming through. we talk about those dew points, seeing too much in the way of moisture. the doppler wind gusts are pretty hefty. 25, 35 miles per hour. throughout the day today. as we look at satellite and radar, high pressure is setting up across the center of the nations. we have the low pressure system moving in through the upper new england area going to move off to the coast, but it is drag that go cold front with it. it will open the door for some of the coldest temperatures we have seen. in the last several days or weeks. the colder air already has minneapolis sitting at 18 degrees 11 in bismarck.

year. >> kristine, there is an app for everything and now one to keep our resolutions. just how bad were we at make and go then succeeding with resolutions? >> well, we did some research on our side here. we learned that a lot of people fail resolutions. in fact, up to 88% of people cannot keep a resolution after two weeks into the new year. which spurred our interest in developing an app called antiresolution. >> so basically, you are saying don't make a resolution in order to keep a resolution? how does that work? >> that's right. our idea is to take small steps and commit and pledge to do small steps instead of a big resolution, because we often set these big, overwhelming goals that are unrealistic. and most of us are not able to keep a long-term goal like that. we are very directed by the

small action movement, which is what we think of as doing something small every day to improve your well-being instead, and by focusing on that small action you are much more likely to reach a larger goal in the end, as opposed to thinking about something overwhelming like losing 30 pounds or trying to run the marathon if you have never done that before. it is better to break it down into steps. we have one minute left, kristine. you have done this. how easy was it to keep? >> reporter: i pledge to eat one vegetarian meal a day. by doing so i was very aware of the benefits it felt great to
