a minivan from this location in west hollywood. the dark minivan has british columbia license plates and they belong to the man in custody. detectives would not confirm how these fires started but witnesses say investigators are examining what appears to be devices placed under cars. juan lopez found a similar one, under his. >> i see it, the little container right there, under the car. >> reporter: like many of the other cars, his car was parked under a carport connected to an apartment building. edward lawrence for cbs news in west holly food. there is also a person of interest in a shooting that left a united states park ranger dead. rangers in washington state are searching for a 24-year-old man who was believed to be well armed, and has survivalist skills. ranger margaret anderson was shot early yesterday morning. 125 people have been evacuated

from the park's visitor center. well the spring like temperatures that we enjoyed over the weekend, they are just going to be a memory. because some of the coldest weather of the season is headed far away. our olga breeze is here with the details. >> reporter: well, not only is it headed our way, some of that has already worked its way in. we are getting kind of a preview of what is going to be a very cold night tonight. we started off with sunshine this morning. wasn't too bad. right now we are getting snowy precipitation across northern portions of maryland, north of i 83, headed up toward the pennsylvania border. we are even seeing moisture off toward fredericksburg as well earlier on this morning. we will continue with the breezy conditions into the afternoon, which means that although we are sitting right around 42 degrees and in the upper 30s in and around the beltway, it is feeling much, much colder than that. these wind chills are now now about the 20s to near 30 degrees. right now at reagan national airport, we have 42 degrees, but

it feels like 35 and that is because of winds out of the northwest at 15 miles per hour. yes we will see a breezy overnight period as well. your day planner looks like this. sunshine will slowly be taken over by some of the cloud cover into the afternoon again. the high struggles to reach lower 40s by late afternoon and then cloud cover overnight tonight and lows in the 20s. it is going to get colder before it gets much warm and i'll have details for you in the 7-day forecast. there was a tragic start to the new year for some local families. we now know the names of the two young people who lost their lives in an early morning crash that occurred in bethesda, just three hours into the new year. >> reporter: there were a total of five young people involved in sunday's car wreck. the 18 and 19-year-old male passengers are both being treated here at suburban hospital. the pictures are just

horrifying. police now tell us 22-year-old rod democratic brice lost control of his white chevy blaze or jones bridge road, crashing through a fence and colliding head on into a tree. >> i heard screeching brakes, and then i heard like bang, the crumpling of metal. i was thinking oh i hope no one got hurt. >> reporter: sadly, his two young friends died. the only woman in the car, 18-year-old katelyn gallagher was in the back seat at the time and 20-year-old nicholas clay was sitting in the front passenger seat. both lost their lives. the driver was flown to baltimore shock trauma in serious condition. the remaining passengers, 19-year-old kevin russell and 18-year-old connor hayes are now recovering at suburban hospital. police say the survivors were wearing their seat belts. neighbors say the stretch of jones bridge at lancaster drive

filed, but investigators are still trying to determine what caused the driver to lose control of her car. you should get your extra coins ready. it is now going to cost you more to drive on some roads in virginia. the charge at the main plaza on the dulles toll road is going up 25 cents to $1.50. tolls on the off-on ramps will stay at 75 cents. and in maryland, the bigger your truck the bigger the bill. tractor trailers will now pay $24 to cross the chesapeake bay bridge. rates for cars and other two axle vehicles went up already, in november, and there will be another toll hike for all vehicles in july of 2013.

that is fighting childhood hunger. and this week, on hero central, our feature is women who care ministries. for three years, the helping kids keep backpacks weekend food program has been in existence. 600 mid and elementary school youngsters are provided two umbrella fasts, two lunches, and 2:10 ners along with snacks. >> the nutrition contributes to the developmental growth of the child. which means the child who does not receive proper nutrition in the formative years, the damage is done all those years of malnutrition is irreparable. >> reporter: at south lake elementary school, counselor terry williams says almost 90% of their students receive free breakfasts and lunches at schools. many depend on the weekend food

program. >> this small bag of food is very important to our children. they look forward to it every week. they make a point of coming to school on friday, so that they can get their backpacks. >> you know, without these backpacks, many youngsters in montgomery county would go hungry over the weekend of the the backpacks are filled with kid friendly nourishing food. they are delivered to school and discreetly place the sacks in the youngster's backpacks. >> they eat a lot of junk food, ordinarily. or perhaps they don't have regularly prepared meals that are well balanced. so we know that they are getting the nutrition that they need and that is so important to their learning. >> when we first started this program, we were really, really excited. we knew we were stopping a

that is really magnifying, that feeling you get when you step out the door. we have seen some sunshine earlier today. that is slowly being taken over by the cloud cover. temperatures only in the 30s and to near 40 degrees at this hour. we are going to keep on going. lower 40s should be the norm across the board. mostly cloudy skies, and yet the winds start to pick up quite a bit. we have been seeing about 10 to 15 miles per hour winds so far today. we are going to wrap-up the 20 miles per hour we understand after 12:00, so very, very breezy at the close of the day. the breeze is going to stick around. it will get more windy as we get into the overnight period tonight. the clouds yes will take over as we head into early morning. the arctic blast is pushing in tonight and will stick with us throughout the day tomorrow. so plan for a very cold forecast on both tuesday and wednesday

to come. some of to moisture has been moving in from the mountains. we have tracked a few slight snow showers and flurries across portions of winchester, moving in toward leesburg and northern portions of maryland, westminister toward the pennsylvania border as well. the immediate metro area has been pretty good moisturewise, with dry, cool air moving nit is the wind gusts that remain the main weather story of the day. up to 28 miles per hour across manassas. gusts recorded through the gaithersburg area and we are seeing a similar pattern setting up across our region so far. futurecast wants to bring in some of that snowy precipitation. but again, it is not making it up and over the mountains for the most part. as i go forward into tuesday morning, this is what you need to watch for. it does bring the opportunity for a few of these flurries. it will get awfully close to

the beltway. so don't be surprised if you see some white stuff falling tomorrow morning. we are looking pretty good as we get in toward wednesday. cold will bring back some of the sunshine with cloud cover in the afternoon. we are really not looking much better on tuesday. cold but more sunshine. highs around 41, 42 degrees for most of us. some will stay in the 30s. it will dip down into the 20s. although we are starting out about 25 to 27 degrees tomorrow. our highs are not going to make it past that freezing point. so definitely be prepared for a cold and blustery day tomorrow. the next three case we stay in the chill. tuesday with a snow flurry possible and then we turn the corner on thursday. as we bring back sunshine and head into the 40s. much milder air to come. friday and saturday back to the 40s. stay with us. 9news now at noon will continue.
