20. when we come back, we'll see how long the cold air will last and another mild break later in the week. >> thank you. we are learning new information about the new year's day car crash that claimed the lives of two area young people and left three others injured. >> a late afternoon vigil took place at the crash site a short time from now at jones bridge road in bethesda. that's where our andrea mccarren joins us live with what she learned today. >> reporter: as sad as this car crash was, just as heartbreaking are the troubled young lives that ended here. sources are telling us that alcohol was a factor and that at least two of the five young people in that car were homeless. >> she was really nice. she was really sweet. he said hi to everybody. >> nick clayton was 20 years old and three days before christmas, his rockville home was condemned. deemed unfit to live in by the county. infested with bugs, filled with trash. his water service cut off. >> i was shocked.

>> nick's mother died a few months ago. his father sources say left town and moved to florida. >> i live right next door to him. it was mind blowing. >> also dead, caitlin marie gallagher, 18 years old and in her second trimester of pregnancy, according to her friends. they knew her at kiki carlton. she attended the lab school in washington. >> it's terrifying. she's too young to die. anyone in that age is too young to drive. >> they were passengers in the trailblazer that was traveling west toward lan caster drive in bethesda. the driver lost control of the car. barreled over the sidewalk, hit a fence, and slammed into a tree. >> just to think that someone so young never had the chance to fulfill anything she wanted. >> on a bitter cold afternoon, friends and family of the victims and the three survivors brought flowers and huddled

together to mourn. 18-year-old survivor, conner hays arrived at the vigil in a wheelchair. also injured was 19-year-old kevin russel of chevy chase. >> some people take commercials as a joke. when your parents say they will pick you up, you will get grounded, but you're going to be alive. >> driver of the car is identified as 22-year-old roderick eugene brice ii of clarksburg. he remains at baltimore shock trauma. charges against him are pending. live from bethesda, andrea mccarren, 9news now. >> what a tragic end, andrea. thank you. an elderly couple remains hospitalized after hit walking on a sidewalk. mary ann harrington lost control of her car and hit 77- year-old john and his wife, dorothy. it happened just after 10:00 a.m. yesterday morning on summit avenue. so far, no charges have been filed in this case, but investigators are still trying

to determine what caused the woman to lose control of her car. it's a welcome end to the search for a woman. heather bayty was found after her husband reported her missing last night. peggy fox joins us with more on the reunion. peggy. >> reporter: part of the search went on here at the washington griss mill. she pent the night wandering in these woods. >> we were walking through the trail and looking for her. >> search teams on the ground, in the air, and on the potomac river spent the first two days of 2012 looking for 27-year-old heather bayty. the mother of two little girls and wife of an army soldier disappeared around 5:00 p.m. new year's day. her husband reported her missing at 7:30. his concern about her walking off into the woods from their home on the base prompted the

massive search. it included 40 uniformed soldiers, the coast guard, and fairfax county emergency team. a team of five was seen searching outside the gates. and not far from where the family lives. >> there are a couple guards here in fairfax county that are trying to help. >> they have dogs? >> no dogs. just them walking and keeping the search up. they told us to keep looking. >> they asked you to look? keep an eye out? >> for what? a blond hair lady, short hair. >> one of the searchers spotted her. they took her to community center where she is safe now with her husband and she is being evaluated tonight to find out what went wrong. i'm peggy fox reporting live, back to you, lesli. >> before we let you go, it's

not clear why heather may have wandered off. >> we don't know, but something concerning. the husband was concerned and knew she was not coming home on her own. very good thing he made that call at 7:30 last night. >> glad they found her. thank you. two boaters found a body today at the belle haven marina along the gw parkway in alexandria. the boaters found the body in the river and called police. there is no word on the cause of his death and the man's name has not been released. gop presidential hopefuls are criss crossing iowa just a day before the caucuses. iowans will be the first voters in the nation to choose the republican they want to challenge president obama. danielle nottingham is in des moines as the candidates make their final pitches. >> anita, typically only three to four candidates leave iowa with enough momentum to in the race, making this a critical day on the campaign trail.

rick santorum had a campaign stop in polk city, iowa. the latest poll shows him in third place, but within striking distance of ron paul and mitt romney. he is taking aim at the front runner. >> we are not looking for an executive officer. we are looking for a commander in chief. >> while romney targets president obama. >> i look at this president and realize that he just doesn't know what has to be done to get this country on track again. >> ron paul is running just behind romney and working to distinguish himself. >> the others represent the status quo. >> polls show 41% of likely caucus goers don't know who they will vote for. >> rick perry volunteers traveled from texas to call iowans and get them to caucus. he is polling in the back half

of the republican field. along with newt gingrich and michele bachmann. >> born and raised in iowa, only one candidate has been the consistent conservative. >> she's trying to play up her hometown roots in a new ad. but the crowds here want to neat the candidates and all six competing in iowa are racing to win over the undecided voters in the home stretch. >> newt gingrich doesn't expect to win tomorrow because millions of dollars of negative ads hurt his campaign. but he believes he will do well enough to go on to new hampshire and then south carolina. in des moines, iowa, danielle nottingham, now back to you, anita. >> thank you. the democrats are also in iowa this week, party leaders are targeting mitt romney and challenging the republican field. president obama won the iowa democratic caucuses and the state in 2008. but iowa is expected to be a key battleground come november. the new back tax in

montgomery county is off and running and other jurisdictions around maryland are watching carefully to see if momentum keeps on building for the tax to spread other places. scott broom is live with more on the tax and how people are reacting to it all. scotty. >> of course we do have a template for how this bag tax runs. it's across the line in washington, d.c., but not to be out done, montgomery county has expanded its bag tax and as you reported, a lot of people are watching because there is momentum to make this tax statewide. >> some people could not bring themselves to pay the new 5- cent per bag tax filling the car with unbagged groceries. >> i think it's a hoax. something else to get our money. >> i had no choice. i had too much to carry on my own. >> enter the number of bags used. >> it's the new bag tax.

5 cents per bag, expecting a million to be raised. with bags considered the bad boy of the litter world, plastic fluttering in trees and waterways, bag taxes are seen as a way to reduce the damage. washington's bag tax on food and liquor taxes reduced use from 22 million a month to about 3 million a month. but montgomery ups the anti by taxing all retailers and paper bags, too. >> i'm from india. we are carrying these in india. i'm used to this. >> at the new safeway in bethesda, customers got a free reusable. a lot of customers have gotten themselves in the habit. >> that's a problem when you first get used to it. you forget it in the car or forget it at home. >> so yeah, we think it's a great idea. >> so, do not forget your carload of reusable bags. list is likely to be prince

georges county. it failed last year. they are trying again this year. baltimore city is looking at it and there are some legislators looking at montgomery leading the way who really think there aught to be a statewide bag tax in maryland. it's a sure bet that will be debated in the legislature this year. maryland would be the first state in the nation to have a statewide bag tax if it passed, 15 states have tried and failed. they aren't going to quit here. reporting live in bethesda, scott broom. >> i guess we better get in the habit just in case. it's going to be another long offseason. did you see that game yesterday? >> the team finished the game 5-11 after yesterday's loss to the philadelphia eagles. dave owens is here with what mike shanahan is saying about next year. dave. >> he has a lot of issues to address. we'll get to that in a minute. didn't go as planned, hard pressed to find anybody who thought the redskins would be

police in queens, new york, are investigating a group of suspected arson attacks. about 100 people were inside the mosque at the time. no one was hurt. a door was damaged and there was also a fire at a nearby house.

the police suspect the attack are hate crimes, but they are investigating. the hunt for an arsonist in the los angeles area may be over. >> still unidentified person is now charged with setting dozens of car fires in west hollywood. edward lawrence has the latest. >> los angeles police arrested this man in connection with 50 suspicious car fires in less than a week. including a dozen new blazes overnight. >> that person is being interrogated. there have been no fires since. we detained this individual. >> the unidentified man was picked up this morning in los angeles. a minivan with canadian license plates that was towed away. the driver resembled a person of interest seen in a video tape released by the multiagency arson task force. >> they aren't ready to declare the case solved. >> our detectives have hundreds of clues, hundreds of leads and dozens of people left

to interview. >> police release surveillance video of a possible suspect and ask the public for help in finding him. most of the fires were set in carports or garages next to apartment complexes. police won't say how the fires were started or what evidence was collected at the crime scene. juan says he found some sort of device under his car, but it failed to ignite. >> when i come in over here, the little container right there under the car. >> damage estimates are topping $2 million, but there are no reported civilian injuries from any of the fires. edward lawrence for cbs news in west hollywood. >> and police are still urging residents to lock their cars and check for any signs of tampering before they drive. hundreds of extra police officers were on hand at the 123rd annual tournament of roses parade in pasadena. on the heels of the two hour parade came several thousand antiwall street protesters in a plea arranged demonstration. some carried a 70-foot wide octopus at the end of the

parade. they say symbolizes the far reaching influence of corporations. in all, 91 floats took part in today's rose parade. but that is fewer than in years past. many of the sponsors is to the economy. some area children went back to class despite the federal holiday. schools in howard and charles counties were all open today as were schools in alexandria, virginia. the chair of the alexandria school board said many parents are happy to send their kids back to school today because they had to go back to work. >> and kids that go back tomorrow are going to be feeling it. >> i would lay out the scarf and the gloves. >> did you all hear that? >> everyone will be cranky enough tomorrow morning. the coldest air of the season. the good news is, as quickly as it arrived, it will depart pretty quickly. let's start with where it is departing. take you out to indiana.

this is not far from south bend. in indiana. and again, i sort of call it fake snow, but you have to shovel it. the wind blows across the unfrozen lake, lake michigan, picks up moisture. boom, you have a snow machine. that's what they had today up in northern sections of indiana. all right, for us, all we have is a cold machine right now. temperatures primarily in the 30s. 37 in college park. these are straight temperatures. 35 in rockville. 34 in gaithersburg and 36 out in leesburg. it happens really pretty uniform. you get clouds coming in. you get the winds. temperatures are uniform inside and outside the beltway. you factor in the winds, this is the deal. feels like it's in the 20s in gaithersburg. feels like it's 29 out in leesburg. they will continue to fall all night and eventually in the single digits by dawn tomorrow. windchills, that's the key. windy and cold tonight.

5 to 15 above. still windy on tuesday, so even during the peek heating of the day, use the word heating loosely. windchills are going to be between 15 and 25. that's what you need to dress for. tonight, early flurries possible. partly cloudy, windy. much colder. lows in the 20s. winds west, northwest. snow will continue west of the divide out in the ski resorts. you're going to get another 6 inches or so. lows tonight, pretty uniform. this is not the cold night temperature wise. tomorrow night will be the cold night temperature wise. mainly in the upper 20s. 28 in arlington. 28 downtown. maybe 27 in college park. out to the west, notice no real drop off. 27 in reston. only 26 in sterling. 25 in leesburg, manassas, and middleberg. tomorrow we'll see a wider range as skies clear out. partly cloudy in the morning. windy, very cold. windchills 5 to 15. temperatures in the 20s to around 30.

temperatures really will struggle to go up at all tomorrow. partly sunny, windy. a couple flurries possible. highs only around 32 and the winds continue northwest at 15 to 25 and gusting. that is the key. so temperatures tomorrow will struggle to get to the freezing mark. rockville maybe 33. maybe 33 downtown. and maybe 33 over toward andrews. that is about it. let's break it down. 20s to start. 28 to 32 by noon. windy across the board and 29 to 34 by evening. windy right through the evening. all right, next three days. it is still going to be cold on wednesday. 34. look what happens, only chilly on thursday. 42. that is actually an average day in january. next seven days, look what happens, we go back into the 50s. we'll be in the 50s on friday. saturday as well. clouds come in saturday. maybe some showers or light rain saturday night. not a potent system. and fall back into the 40s sunday and monday. the patterns change, but just for a couple of days.

very important news for area commuters. you'll now have to shell out more money for tolls on the dulles toll road. just kicked in yesterday. the first of the year. the rate for cars at the plaza is now up to $1.50. drivers of cars will still pay 75 cents at the entrance and exit ramps. the old bridge over the beltway is coming down. demolition is set for tomorrow night starting at 11:00 p.m. the old bridge is one of 20 that has to be replaced during the construction of the new high occupancy toll lanes. it's expected to take 2 to 3 weeks. work will take place seven days

a week in the overnight hours. drivers of one busy arlington roadway will soon be able to find out just how long it's going to take them to get to their destination. the plan is to install a real time travel system on route 50 that features signs for drivers. the county is still looking for a contractor to build a 10-mile communications network and that network will be built along wilson boulevard. columbia pike, and lee highway. and arlington made it all the way through 2011 without a single murder. the washington post reports it is the first time in 50 years that the county ended the year without any homicides. there was just one murder in arlington in 2010 and only two in 2009. coming up, the show of forces it has security experts saying iran's response to new sanctions targeting its oil. someone donated hundreds of dollars to this thrift shop and they may not know it.

on his trail. >> a body believed to be suspected gunman, benjamin barnes has been found. >> a body has been spotted from the air in a drainage above the falls. >> teams are making their way to the location. >> area is very rugged. it's tough going if someone was out walking around in there. >> dozens of officers have been scouring the area for the 24-year-old suspect who was an iraq war veteran and may have been suffering from post- traumatic stress disorder. barnes shot and killed anderson when she stopped him from entering the park. >> he put multiple rounds inside of her car and she didn't have a chance. >> officers exchanged fire with barnes, but he escaped into the woods on foot. police found weapons and body armor inside his car. they think barnes, who had survival skills, came to the national park to hide out after a new year's eve shooting near

seattle. barnes was wanted for questioning in a house party shooting that left four people wounded. mount rainier park was shut down. authorities escorted 125 visitors from the grounds. more than 200 officers were involved in the search. tracking barnes on foot and using an airplane with sensors that can detect body heat. >> we also understand barnes has a child and was involved in a custody dispute earlier this year. meantime, iran test fired a new cruise missile today. capable of destroying warships. it's the second test in as many days. iran's navy chief says, a key root for the oil supply. the tests are a reaction to new sanctions president obama signed over the weekend that make it harder for iran to sell its oil. >> iran is e increasingly desperate and paranoid and worried about where the international community is

going because again, the targeting of iran's oil exports, makes up 70% of their government budget. >> iran is fighting back against fresh criticism over its nuclear program, saying they are developing nuclear program to not make atonic weaponly. the recent survey shows $41 billion has been wasted on gift cards purchased as presents in the last seven years. the research group found a huge group of the loss occurred between 2005 and 2009 because of fees and expiration dates. the 2009 credit card act now forbids fees on gift cards and they cannot expire within five years of when they are purchased. maybe you've seen the signs of the dairy cases or maybe you haven't about your favorite brand of organic milk. there isn't enough to go around. here's the deal. the cost of organic feed has

gone up, but the farmers are not being paid more for what they produce. until they are, you may have a shortage. you may have trouble finding your favorite organic carton as more farmers opt to produce milk the conventional way. we reached out to grocery chains. safeway said they have experienced some delays for weeks. your also going to have to pay more to play the power ball jackpot. it will cost more to place your bet starting january 15. it will increase to $2, but the winnings will also be bigger. another multistate lottery game megamillions will still sell for $1 a ticket. and three people in virginia are starting off the new year as millionaires. they won the top prize in the virginia lottery's annual new year's millionaire raffle. and one of the winning tickets was sold at a 7-eleven in great falls. the other two winning tickets were bought in meche

mecklenberg, they are sure happy. anita. >> i bet they are. if you are going to be donating money to an organization at the end of 2011, you want a receipt. unless you didn't know you gave that money away. a thrift shop is trying to find a person that gave them hundreds of dollars because it might have been a mistake. lindsey mastis explains. >> inside this thrift shop, volunteers sort through donations. >> we are a struggling parish. >> they check the pockets. >> many times we found articles in pockets whether that's a dollar's worth of change or $5 or $10. >> last week, one of their volunteers found hundreds of dollars in cash. linda says if it wasn't meant as a donation, they'll give the money back. but first, they have to figure out who dropped off the donation. >> they get nearly a dozen donations per day, but this stood out because the person

who dropped off the clothes said it came from a loved one who died. >> we think if it had been intended, they would have given us the cash and said here is something we want to give from our loved one to you. >> to make sure the money gets back to the right person, they have a series of questions that have to be answered correctly. >> how many bags, how was it packaged, what date did you bring it? what kind of vehicle were you driving? >> the goal is the thrift shop to help the community, even if it means giving up cash. >> they may need the money and we have it. >> the wait until the 15th and if it's not claimed, they'll use it to make repairs. much needed repairs. >> these funds could really go a long way. >> i'm lindsey mastis, 9news now. >> sounds like a good solution. they did get calls over the weekend, but so far, no one has been able to answer the questions correctly. for now, that money is sitting safely in the bank.

caught on tape, one of the most bizarre things you have ever seen. focus on the suv. a woman in alabama was driving erratically, as you can see, when she hit a patrol car twice. then she circled an ambulance and police fired a shot because she is coming right in the officer's direction. police eventually arrest her. the woman was taken to a hospital for a mental evaluation and charged with attempted murder in spite of all that craziness, no one was murdered. >> that is crazy. >> the self-described nightmare is over at the san francisco zoo, banana sam is back where he belongs after someone stole the 17-year-old sciewrl monkey from his cage. >> late last week, someone cut a couple holes in the back of the closure and made off with

banana sam. over the weekend, police got a call from a man who said he found the monkey in a nearby park and was able to coax it into his backpack. >> unfortunately, the exotic pet trade does still function and even in this country, it's not legal in california to have a primate as a pet. >> monkeys bite and they can infect your wounds right away and they are not handleable. it's not like picking up a lost dog or cat. >> police are not ruling out that good samaritan who turned in banana sam because he could have been the same man who took the monkey in the first place. man explanation seems to be fishy. >> we'll see. >> authorities in arkansas now say the death of about 100 blackbirds on new year's eve, no accident. this year police asked residents celebrating the new year not to set off fireworks

after blackbirds were accidentally killed. someone ignored that order and may have targeted the birds over the weekend. >> this is the pack induced by human beings that probably their agenda was to go and scare the birds to get some attention. >> i heard a pretty powerful firework go off, but at a great distance. nothing terribly loud and nothing close. and that triggered some movement from the birds. and for the first time, i now realize that yes, there is, in my opinion, a correlation between the booms of the fireworks and the movement of birds. >> now large numbers of migrating blackbirds roofed in this community is northeast of little rock. last year, fireworks were blamed after thousands of the birds flew into cars, homes, telephone poles, and each other. >> they were born just minutes apart, but we're going to

we have been telling you about on going drug shortages. tonight there's word that the lack of attention deficit drugs can be traced back to the dea. the drug enforcement administration sets quotas on how much adhd medication is manufactured. the idea is to minimize abuse from people who use the drug

illegally to stay awake and alert longer. shortages are so bad, hundreds of families filed complaints daily with the fda saying they can't find what they need in pharmacies across the country. most kids head back to school tomorrow after the holiday break and domestic exams are just around the corner for the older kids. new research from around the world shows physical activity can influence that next report card. >> five-year-old leah and her little sister, lesli, are having a blast spinning around and bouncing all over the playground. >> when i play outside, it makes me happy. >> we do not sit and watch tv, that's for sure. we do not do that. >> exercise may also help children do well in school. researchers in the netherlands analyzed 14 studies and found strong evidence of a relationship between physical activity and academic performance. >> the increase circulation to the brain may have some

almost 90% of their students receive free breakfast and lunch at school. and many depend on the weekend food program. this small little bag of food is very important to our children. they look forward to it every week. they make a point of coming to school on friday so they can get their backpack. >> without these backpacks, many youngsters in montgomery county would go hungry over the weekend. and the bags are filled with kid friendly, nonparishable, vitamin fortified foods. >> volunteers with women who care ministries assemble the food sack each week, deliver them to schools, and discreetly place the sacks in the youngsters backpacks. >> they eat a lot of junk food ordinarily or perhaps they don't have regularly prepared meals that are well balanced. so we know that they are
