into winchester. winds are downtown towards gaithersburg. what that does is brings the temperature much, much colder. it feels like it's 31 downtown. it feels like it's in the 20s in gaithersburg and feels like it's 23 already up in hagerstown. we'll come back and talk about the prospect of some snow flurries tomorrow and let you know when these winds and windchills will change. >> all right topper, thanks for that. we have new information about the tragic knew year's day car crash that killed two young people and injured three others in our area. sources tell 9news, alcohol was a factor and one of the young victims was pregnant. andrea mccarren is working this story. she joins us live from the crash scene. so many sad stories in this one incident. >> reporter: absolutely, anita. this crash may have left two people dead, two young people, but many, many more lives have

been shattered. 18-year-old conner hayes of rockville showed up at the crash site in a wheelchair. he was among the lucky survivors of the violent crash. two of his friends are dead. >> anyone in that age is too young to die. >> nick clayton who was evicted days before christmas, when his home was deemed unfit to live in. >> i live next door to him. it is mind blowing. >> and caitlin marie gallagher who was in her second try messer of pregnancy. she attended school in d.c. >> just to think someone so young never had the chance to fulfill anything she wanted. >> both were killed when a trailblazer driven by 22-year- old roderick eugene brice ii slammed into a tree.

sources tell us alcohol was a factor in the crash. >> people take drunk driving commercials as a joke and when your parents say they will pick you up from any situation, you're going it get grounded, but you're going to be alive. >> also injured in this tragic crash, 19-year-old kevin russell of chevy chase, brice, the driver, remains hospitalized in baltimore. charges against him are pending. live from bethesda, andrea mccarren, 9news now. such a sad story. thank you andrea. a body found near a creek is being considered the first murder of the year in the district. leroy's body was found early saturday morning in the 4200 block of hunk place northeast. the 56-year-old was strangled. >> in prince georges county. police don't have much to go on to identify the three people wanted for robbing a seven-11,

but they 7-eleven. investigators say these men were armed when they robbed the store just after 6:00 a.m. on saturday and information in the case could be worth as much as $1,000. the search is over for a virginia mom missing for almost 24 hours. heather beatty lives on post. >> i'm peggy fox where a young mother and wife of an army soldier was found safe this afternoon after wandering in the woods all night. >> we were walking through the trail. >> search teams on the ground, in the air, and on the potomac river spent the first two days of 2012 looking for 27-year-old heather baity. the mother of two little girls and wife of an army soldier disappeared around 5:00 p.m. her husband reported her missing at 7:30. his concern about her walking off into the woods from their home on the base prompted the

massive search. it included 40 uniformed soldiers. the coast guard, and fairfax county emergency team. a team of five was seen searching just outside the walker gate a few miles south of mt. vernon. one of the searchers spotted her around 2:00 just walking on the base. she has since been reunited with her husband and in a local hospital being evaluated. peggy fox, 9news now. three days into the new year and campaign 2012 will really start to pick up steam. tomorrow is the iowa caucuses and six of the seven candidates are criss crossing the state tonight to make their last minute pitches. a new poll pit mitt romney in the lead, followed by ron paul and rick santorum. a key iowa congressman has not given any endorsement. >> lie look at a candidate and say, i like all these things about them, but it's not all i want to see in the next president of the united states.

it's true, we don't have a perfect candidate, but we could make a perfect candidate out of the candidates that are there. >> and steve king is not alone, that same poll shows that 41% of people who are likely to vote tomorrow have not decided who to cast a ballot for or they say they may change their minds. danielle nottingham has been in des moines since late last week and danielle, you have to wonder with the caucuses starting tomorrow, why so many people are undecided? >> well lesli, i spoke to a lot of voters over this last week and they say so far all of the candidates sound the same to them. no one has said anything to separate themselves from the crowd. so in the next day and for tomorrow, they are looking for the candidates to say something to set them apart. in 2008, mike huckabee won here very easily. he had a lot of support from christian conservatives, but this time around, it looks like their vote will be split also.

they are always concerned about family values, but this year they also want to hear a candidate speak about the economy and the direction that the country is going through. a will the of voters are telling me they want a candidate that shares their same value on marriage and family. they want someone that can take the country in the right direction. a lot of people i spoke to say it's going to be a very last minute decision. they may decide a couple hours before they caucus who they will cast their ballot for, lesli. >> it sounds like they have a lot of work to do between now and tomorrow. danielle nottingham, we'll see the results later tomorrow. >> no comment tonight from rick santorum's campaign after 9news now wanted to know what he meant when he made this statement in iowa on sunday. >> i don't want to make white people's lives better by giving them somebody else's money. i want to give them the opportunity to earn their money and provide for themselves and

their families. >> that comment came during a stop in sioux city with the department of welfare. we called the santorum campaign to ask him why he singled out blacks in his statement as opposed to anyone receiving welfare. a spokesperson said he didn't recall the candidate saying anything like that. colleagues are slugging it out in iowa, john huntsman is focusing his attention in new hampshire. that state holds its primary next week. >> virginia's attorney general is no longer pushing for an immediate change in the rules that kept two presidential candidates off the ballot. rick perry failed to submit the 10,000 signatures. they have gone to court to argue the rules are too strict. there's no way to change those rules now and still be fair to the candidates who qualified. mitt romney and ron paul will be on the ballot. >> hoky nation is living it up in new orleans. football fans providing a big economic boost.

hope you enjoyed the relatively light holiday commutes over these last two weeks. tomorrow it's on. students return to most schools in the area and many people who took the time off for the holidays head back to the office. the good news is that congress doesn't head back into session until the 17th. in virginia, all 6400 people moving into the new mark center building off i-395 at seminary road are expected to report there for work tomorrow. and a quick reminder that the new year means new tolls along the dulles toll road. along the toll road, paying an additional quarter at the main toll plaza. the tolls at the on and the off ramps stay the same. lots of feedback on our wusa9 facebook page about montgomery county's bag tax. that measure took effect with the new year and most of you, all 61 of you who talked to us

about it, you're not happy about it. we asked if people would prefer to shop somewhere else. yes, i would. money out of my pocket spent on a tax is money not spent on food. but the county gave plenty of notice on this one. she says i have a rather nice selection of bags that i've been collecting all summer. so no. we sent scott broom to bethesda to get all the details. pretty bag or no, what are people telling you? >> well, i think if there's a model for how long this is going to play out, it's right across the border in washington, d.c. where they had a bag tax started in 2010. it did dramatically reduce the number of bags used and discarded. here in maryland, it looks like they are leading the way. momentum is building for bag taxes and other jurisdictions. >> bag tax goes beyond washington. rather than just food and

liquor retailers, montgomery county imposed a bag tax on all retailers and paper bags, too. today i saw some people so mad they preferred to lug unbagged groceries to the car. >> it's all a hoax. >> ten bays, 50 cents. >> i had no choice. i had too much to carry on my own. >> enter the name of bags used. >> here at the safeway in bethesda, there were a lot of bag tax supporters. the store is giving away a free reusable bag for every $50 spent to help make customers make the transition. with the goal of reducing litter dramatically and raising about a million a year for water pollution mitigation. >> that's a problem when you first get used to it. you forget it in the car or forget it at home. >> so yeah, we think it's a great idea. >> next on the list for bag taxes in maryland, likely to be prince georges county, they failed to get one through. there are legislators who say the bag tax in maryland should

be statewide. 15 states have failed to get a bag tax passed. if maryland could do it with montgomery county leading the way, it would be the first in the nation. reporting live, scott broom, 9news now. >> better stock up on those bags. thank you. no holiday today for the arlington county board. they met for the first time to set priorities for the upcoming year and that included electing new chairperson. ballots were tallied, mary was elected for the next year with walter as her vice chair. bel one thing that could become a reality next year, backyard chickens. that could really happen this year. one of its priorities for 2012 is exploring urban agriculture. he is hoping a tax of residents will address the push, as well as explore. >> a few flurries around here today weren't much to talk

about, but the snow coming off the great lakes, that is a totally different story. check out this video from south bend, indiana, topper can't help but be excited by that lake effect snow started falling late last night and it is not expected to stop until early tomorrow. when it's all done, local forecasters are expecting as much as 10 inches of snow and topper, i'm so glad to see that our friends in indiana are the ones dealing with it and not us. >> yeah. flurries today. that said, you jump the divide up toward western maryland, you're going to get 6 to 12 inches. >> they could use it. that's where you want it. >> exactly. they could use the cold weather, too. we have to concentrate on windchill. that is going to be the key. we need to talk about windchills before we decide what to wear. especially for the kids tomorrow. let's start with the temperatures, because right now, temperatures are not crazy cold. this is about average for this time of day and this time of
