scarf. check the humidifier. you want to put moisture back into your home. allow extra time to warm up your engine. a lot of folks going back to work and school. we have snow showers in the mountains. we'll come back and tell you if we'll see any snow flurries. it has been a long and trying day for the family of a missing woman. 27-year-old heather was located today safe and found. peggy fox has more on this unfolding story. >> they were walking through the trail. >> search teams on the ground, in the air, and on the potomac river spent the first two days of 2012 looking for 27-year-old heather beatty. the mother of two little girls and wife of an army soldier disappeared around 5:00 p.m. new year's day. her husband reported her missing at 7:30. his concern about her walking off into the woods from their home on the base prompted the

massive search. it included 40 uniformed soldiers. the coast guard, and fairfax county emergency teams. >> there are guards out here in fairfax county. they are trying to help. >> no dogs. just them walking and keeping an eye on the search. >> keep an eye out. >> for what? >> for blond haired lady, short hair. >> a team of five was seen searching just outside fort belvoir a few miles south of mt. vernon. one of the searchers spotted her around 2:00 just walking on the base. she has since been reunited with her husband and is in a local hospital being evaluated. peggy fox, 9news now. >> officials are working on an official press release concerning the safe discovery of heather. until then, all they are saying is the outpouring of community

support was touching. there has been a grim discovery in fairfax county. the body of an adult man was found at the belle haven marina just after 9:00 this morning. two recreational boaters made this discovery. no word yet on how the man died or his identity. police are awaiting the results of an autopsy to get those answers. reports that the five young people involved in a deadly new year's day crash were coming home from a party. two people were killed, one of new an expectant mother. friends and family gathered there today to remember the victims. andrea mccarren has more. >> she was nice. he was kind to everybody. >> nick clayton was 20 years old and three days before christmas, his rockville home was condemned. deemed unfit to live in by the county. infested with bugs, filled with trash. his water service cut off. >> i was shocked.

>> nick's mother died a few months ago. his father sources say left town and moved to florida. >> i live right next door to him. it was like mind blowing. >> also dead, caitlin marie gallagher, 18 years old, and in her second trimester of pregnancy, according to her friends. they knew her as kiki carlson. she had attended the lab school in washington. >> it is terrifying. it's really terrifying. she's too young to die. anyone in that age is too young to die. >> clayton and gag gallagher were passengers in the trailblazer that was traveling west on jones bridge road toward lancaster drive. the driver lost control of the car. barreled off the sidewalk, hit a fence, and slammed into a tree. >> just to think that someone so young never had the chance to fulfill anything she wanted. >> on a bitter cold afternoon, friends and family of the victims and the three survivors brought flowers and huddled

together to mourn. 18-year-old survivor, conner hays arrived in a wheelchair. also injured was 19-year-old kevin russell of chevy chase. people take drunk driving commercials as a joke. when your parents say they will pick you up from any situation, you're going to get grounded, but you're going to be alive. >> the driver of the car is identified as 22-year-old roderick eugene brice ii of clarksburg. he remains hospitalized at shock trauma. charges against him are pending. in bethesda, 9 justice of 9news now. >> when the building opens this month, a large part will be off limits. nearly two feet of water from prop call tomorrow lee flooded the floor. a lot of repairs are still needed. the washington examiner reports the bill comes to more than $14 million, but the insurance coverage only provides for $5 million. the building is scheduled to reopen january 17.

the new year brought with it a new tax in montgomery county. paper or plastic? doesn't matter. consumers will have to fork over 5 cents per shopping bag. as scott broom reports, the tax sets the stage for a similar movement across the rest of the state of maryland. >> in montgomery county, some people couldn't bring themselves to pay the tax filling the car with unbagged groceries. >> i think it's all a hoax. something else to get our money. >> i sent a bag. >> i had no choice. i had too much to carry on my own. >> enter the number of bags used. >> it's the new bag tax in montgomery county. 5 cents per bag expected to raise a million per year to be spent on water pollution mitigation. with bags considered the bad boy of the litter world, plastic fluttering in trees and waterways, bag taxes are seen as a way to reduce the damage. washington's bag tax on food and liquor retailers reduced use from about 22 million a

month to about 3 million a month, but montgomery ups the anti by taxing all retailers and paper bags, too. >> i'm from india. so i'm used to this. >> at the new safeway in bethesda, customers got a free reusable bag for every $50 in groceries they bought. and a will the of customers have gotten themselves in the habit. >> that's a problem when you are getting used to it. you forget it in the car or forget it at home. >> so yeah, we think it's a great idea. >> and there is momentum for this bag tax trend to expand here in maryland. prince georges has tried and failed, but they'll try again. and some legislators in annapolis think the bag tax should go statewide. in bethesda, scott broom, 9news now. >> a happy and lucky new year for some people holding virginia lottery tickets. there are three winners in the state's annual new year's millionaire raffle. one of the tickets was sold at

a 7-eleven in great falls. the other two winning tickets were bought in meche meche mecklenberg county. unless you didn't know that you gave that money away. well, a thrift shop is trying to find the person who gave them hundreds of dollars because it might have been a mistake. lindsey mastis explains. >> inside the thrift shop, volunteers sort through donations. >> we are struggling parish. >> when they get clothes, they check the pocket. >> many times we find articles, whether it's a dollar of change or $5 or $10. >> one of their volunteers found hundreds of dollars in cash. linda ellis says if it wasn't meant as a donation, they'll give the money back. but first, who dropped off the donation? >> they get a dozen donations

per day, but this one stood out because the person who dropped off the clothes said it came from a loved one who died. >> if it had been intended, they would have given us the cash and said here's something that we want to give from our loved one to you. >> to make sure the money gets back to the right person, they have a series of questions that have to be answered correctly. >> what was in that package. what time of day did you bring it? what date did you bring it? what kind of vehicle were you driving? >> goal is to help the community, even if it means giving up cash. >> they may need the money and we have it. >> they'll wait until the 15th and if it's not claimed, they'll use it to make repairs. much needed repairs. >> these funds could really go a long way. >> i'm lindsey mastis, 9news now. >> well ellis says they have gotten calls over the weekend, but no one has been able to answer all the answers connectly. for now, the money is sitting safely in the bank.

mitt romney is leading the pack. but they show nearly half of caucus goers are undecided. here are the latest developments. >> anita, typically only three to four candidates leave iowa with enough momentum to stay in the race, making this a critical day on the campaign trail. rick santorum supporters peered through the window in polk city, iowa. >> be bold, step forward to lead. you're casting the first vote. >> the latest poll shows santorum in third place, but in striking distance. santorum is taking aim at the front runner. >> we are not looking for a chief executive officer for this country. we're looking for a commander in chief. >> while romney targets president obama. >> i look at this president and realize that he just doesn't know what has to be done to get this country on track again.

hampshire and then south carolina. in des moines, iowa, danielle nottingham, now back to you. >> thank you danielle. the republican, former utah governor, john huntsman is not contesting iowa and focused on new hampshire. police are questioning a man in connection with this. at least 55 cars have been set on fire over the last week. authorities say the man in custody looks like the suspect who was captured in a surveillance video shortly after a fire in an underground parking garage. investigators are examining what looked like devices placed under many of the cars that were torched. a little further north, it is a new year's tradition more than a century old. the 123rd tournament of the roses parade got underway in pasadena. marching bands were joined by colorful floats. more than 40 of them were part of the parade entitled, just imagine. the festivities conclude with the rose bowl football game between oregon and wisconsin.

another bowl game, the sugar bowl features virginia tech against michigan. tomorrow's contest kicks off in new orleans. hoky fans are packing the big easy and as monica hernandez reports, they are having a big economic impact. >> all throughout the french quarter, the sugar bowl is just days away. this high school band from saganaw, michigan, is here for the big game. just down the block, michigan and virginia tech fans are kicking off the all-state fan fest next to jack's brewery. >> just to be among the michigan faithful and have fun and have a good time in general. >> free fest festival, many arrive days early. >> we actually bought our plane tickets. that's how excited we were. >> for some, the sugar bowl makes for a house divided. >> game time, all bets are

tis the season. the season to recycle those trees. people less than 8 feet tall can put them on the curb. county officials want to remind you, make sure all the ornaments and lights have been removed. people with bigger trees contact your trash collector. >> this weekend was the weekend to get your lights down because you don't want to be out there right now. >> we were taking stuff down inside today and today it was festive because we have snow flurries. and here's the deal. arctic air is here. it's going to be with us for a couple of days. it's going to exit by the ladder part of the week. the windchills because that's the key. temperatures are not that bad. i mean, yeah, they are colder than it has been, but mid to upper 30s is about average for us. 36 in college park. officially downtown we are still looking at 37. and mainly in the mid 30s. 34 in great falls.

34 in reston. even 34 in sterling. so temperatures, you know, the straight temperatures not that cold. you factor in the wind, it's 24 in gaithersburg and 27 in leesburg and below freezing in manassas and downtown and even feels like it's below freezing in fredericksburg. feels like it's in the single digits. so windchill is the key. windy and very cold tonight. windchills between 5 and 15 above. windy tomorrow. the winds pick up again and windchills on tuesday even in the afternoon are going to be between 15 and 25. that's what you need to dress for. early flurries possible tonight, otherwise partly cloudy, windy, and much colder. snow will continue on the west side of the divide. winter storm warnings continue through 5:00 p.m. tomorrow. lows in the 20s and winds north, northwest. because of the wind, temperatures tonight pretty uniform. you aren't going to see a wide range tonight. 26 in gaithersburg. not that big of range really.

27 out in bowie. 27 up in the baltimore. 27 in reston. and not much of a rain, but plenty cold. partly crowd di, windy, and cold. there are the windchills, 5 to 15. temperatures in the 20s to 30. winds northwest 15 to 35. temperatures don't go up a lot tomorrow. they will struggle to go up. very cold. a flurry possible. highs around 32. and winds northwesterly at 15 to 25 and still a little bit on the gusty side. the zone forecast. snow will continue in oakland. temperatures are going to hold in the teens tomorrow. an additional 3, 4 inches of snow. winter storm warnings until 5:00 p.m. tomorrow. snow showers possible and then flurries possible, hagerstown, martinsburg, winchester. below freezing. maybe 34 in culpeper. and also manassas and leesburg and we're looking at temperatures to the east. barely around freezing as we get into downtown.

maybe 33. maybe mid 30s down into southern maryland. that's about it. 34 for annapolis and with all the winds, small craft advisory for the bay and title tight potomac. 20s to start, 28 to 32 by noon. and then 29 to 34. windy all day. that's as high as it's going to get. next three days, cold tomorrow, cold wednesday. but then just chilly on thursday. temperatures go back to the low 40s and that is average. now look what happens after that. we get into after thursday's low 40s, we're in the 50s friday and saturday. clouds come in late saturday, maybe some showers saturday night. not that cold. mid 40s on sunday. sunshine next monday with highs around 40. anita and 9news now will continue right after this.
