the race. well, this morning, we're waiting for a specific response from rick santorum's campaign about what the presidential hopeful meant when he made a statement in iowa sunday. take a listen. >> i don't want to make black people's lives better by giving them somebody else's money. i want to give them the opportunity to provide for themselves and their families. >> now, the comment made during a stop in souix city at the department of welfare. 9news now called the santorum campaign to ask why he singled out blacks in the statement as opposed to every ethnic group seeing welfare. a spokesperson got back to us and said he wants to look into the context of the statement before they respond. fairfax county police are trying to figure out how a man ended up dead in the water. two boaters found a body at the belle haven marina in

alexandria monday morning. authorities are waiting for autopsy results to determine how the man died. they do say there are no obvious signs of foul play. alcohol may have been a factor in a deadly new year's day crash in bethesda. early sunday morning, 20-year- old nick clayton and 18-year- old caitlin marie gallagher were killed in which the suv they were riding slammed into a tree on jones ridge road. the driver and two other passengers remain hospitalized. police say they're waiting for test results to confirm if the driver had been drinking. they do say open beer cans were found inside the vehicle. >> police in woodbridge say a woman and her 2-year-old son are lucky they did not get in a serious wreck after someone cut the brake line on her car. when she took off in her car, the brakes didn't work. she was able to stop the vehicle safely. police have since arrested 36- year-old kevin riley of fallbrook lane for tampering in the car. he's charged with two counts of malicious wounding and destruction of property.

reilly is believed to be the father of the 2-year-old boy. police in arlington county have a huge number to be proud of. zero. that's how many murders were reported in 2011. even though homicides are not common there, the zero hasn't happened in 50 years. chris zimmerman says community policing and a good local economy have helped keep crime down in general. drivers on one busy arlington roadway will be able to find out how long it will take to get to their destination. the plan is to install a real time travel system which includes message signs for drivers. the county is still looking for a contractor to build a ten mile communications network. it would be built along clarendon and glebe road, columbia pike and lee highway. the old lewinsville road bridge is coming down. demolition is set for tonight at 11:00. the bridge is one of 20 that have been replaced during the construction of the new high

occupancy toll lanes. it is expected to take 3 to 4 weeks to remove them. work would take place over the overnight hours. iranian leaders believe they have proven the ability to destroy warships. >> this is a day after the iranian military test fired a new crews missile. the nation's navy chief says it proves aroone is in complete control of the strait of hormuz. the waterway is used to transport 1/6 of the world's oil supply before it heads to open ocean. security experts say the missile tests are a reaction to the new sanctions president obama signed which make it harder for iran to sell its own oil. >> iran is increasingly desperate and paranoid and worried about where the international community is going because again, of this targeting of iran's oil exports which is critical of iran, makes up 70% of their government budget. >> the u.s. wants to crack down on funding of iran's nuclear

program. iranian officials deny the goal is to create atomic weapons. they say they want nuclear energy to produce power and medical devices. january 11th is the tenth anniversary of the first detainees arriving at the at the detention center in guantanamo bay, cuba. the group witness against torture plans to mark the date with ten days of activities in and around d.c. organizers say they're demanding an end to torture and a definite detention at guantanamo and afghanistan and at any other facility which is used to hold alleged terror detainees. they also want president obama to veto the national defense authorization act which recently was approved by congress. 4:35. here's a look at some things making news now. the hunt for an iraq war veteran suspected in two shootings in washington state is over. yesterday, investigators found the body of benjamin colton barnes in mt. rainier national park. the discovery comes one day after he allegedly killed a park ranger and opened fire at

a new year's eve party. barnes' mother says her son suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder. the murdered park ranger leaves behind a husband, also a park ranger and three small daughters. the man suspected of setting dozens of fires in los angeles remains behind bars. harry burkhart faces charges in connection with more than 50 suspicious car fires. damage is estimated to be $3 million. police in queens, new york, are investigating a string of suspected arson attacks. someone threw molotov cocktails at a hindu temple, a mosque and a corner store. about 100 people were inside the mosque at the time. no one was hurt. but a door was damaged. there was also a fire at a nearby home. this police suspect the attacks are hate crimes and they're still investigating. 11 minor earthquakes in the area of youngstown, ohio, may have been caused by an injection well which is used to dispose of waste water from oil and gas drilling.

this cold tuesday morning. we're going to see some flurries and snow showers this afternoon. this morning though, some sunshine. becoming mostly cloudy. a windy day. winds 15 to 25 out of the northwest. even though the air temps in the low 30s. wind chills only in the teens and 20s. it will be a cold, cold afternoon. more on the seven-day forecast in about four minutes. right now, here's monica. >> you need bundle up when you head out the door. the good news is right now, volumes are light. i don't think that will last very long with everyone headed back to work and school, expect it to be heavy this morning. lanes are open along 95 and 395. more on virginia roadways coming up at 4:47. mike and drea? >> it is time for the first your money segment of the morning. >> jessica is here to help us ring in the new year. >> good morning. the markets begin their brand new year today. we have high hopes. investors will get new numbers on the struggling housing market and the latest jobs numbers. the unemployment rate stands at 8.6%. a check on the number last

friday, the markets finished on a down note. dow fell 69 points to end at 1 12,217. overall, it was up about 5.5%. nasdaq dropped by 8%. the s&p 500 dropped 5 points and ended the year flat. u.s. savings bonds have gone digital. you can no longer buy paper bonds starting in 2012 this year, they're only being sold electronically. savings bonds were printed for 76 years and the treasury department went digital to save some money: for the first time, america's top export is fuel. the country on pace to ship $88 billion worth of jet fuel. this is the first time in 60 years the u.s.a. is exporting more fuel than it imports. very important to note these are refined petroleum products. it is not directly reflecting

good morning. welcome back to 9news now this tuesday morning. it is 4:44. you know, it is colder, the temperature is colder but it doesn't feel as cold as it did yesterday because the winds aren't as blustery. >> wait until you're outside today! it is going to be painful. it is going to pick up. we'll have gusts 25 or gusts over 20. >> right now, not bad. they're on the way. >> i don't agree with you guys. >> i didn't feel the gusts. >> there are spots gusting over 25 miles per hour. temperatures down in the upper 20s and low 30s. i think it will be a painful morning for anybody who has to be outside. painful day with the wind chills holding in the teens and 20s all day. in the mountains, worse than that where the snow is flying

thursday. i think by thursday, we're actually looking at highs back in the 40s. this morning, as we look at the doppler radar, the composite. you see snow showers. streamers in off the lake through pennsylvania, ohio, virginia. some gets into the mountains. you get east of the mountains, east of 81 especially, things are relatively quiet. 27 at fredericksburg. bill in newland, 28 along with terry in bowie and e. j. in tobias. gaithersburg, 25. when you factor in the wind chill, now we're feeling it. wind chills, lots of teens in the shenandoah valley. lower 20s. 19 is the wind chill at pax river. officially, 29 at reagan national. partly cloudy. feels like 21 with wind west- northwest. they've been gusting over 25 miles per hour. our dew point very dry. down to 14 degrees. a sign of the arctic air mass,

the dew points get real low. you can see the cold from kansas city to chicago to detroit. temps in the teens. look at denver, 41. there is some milder air out here. this will be coming back for the next couple of days. atlanta at 25. and with the cold air coming in off the lake, hits the mountains, you get the lift going on. snow showers from the mountains of north carolina all the way through new england. some of the areas down wind, ontario, one, two feet of lake- effect snow. as you look at the future cast, some of the streamers coming in toward us, the snow showers during the afternoon in spots and flurries through this evening. quieter tonight. then watch this disturbance here with the clouds tomorrow morning, near pittsburgh. as it comes across the region, going to produce snow flurries, snow showers here tomorrow afternoon and evening. it will be out of here by tomorrow night. again, another little quick coating is possible from that as well. here is our forecast. today, 33. windy. flurries and snow showers this

no problems to report on the dulles toll road out of leesburg. 123 and 7 in tysons corner. live look at 66 in centreville. all lanes are open to the beltway and inside over to the roosevelt bridge. coming up, we'll focus on maryland at 4:55. mike? >> thank you, monika. >> arlington county board has set priorities for the upcoming year and elected a new chairperson. mary heinz was elected. walter tejada was selected as her vice chair. backyards in arlington county may have several backyard chicken coops. tejada said one of his priorities for 2012 is exploring urban agriculture. he's hoping task force residents will address community push to allow chickens as well as its four options like rooftop garden and land exchanges. if you want your child to get better grades, you may want to make sure they're getting plenty of physical activity.

randall pinkston has results of the study. >> they're having a blast spinning around bouncing at the playground. >> when i play outside, it makes me really happy. >> their mom brings them here off ton make sure they're getting plenty of exercise. >> we do not sit and watch tv. that's for sure. we do not do that. >> reporter: a new study finds exercise may also help her children do well in school. researchers in the netherlands analyzed 14 studies from the u.s., canada and south africa and found strong evidence of a relationship between physical activity and academic performance. >> the increased circulation to the brain may have some positive effects in terms of the neurotransmitters, the can emcals that are responsible for behavior and learning. even in terms of attention span. >> most studies focused on the physical activity kids got from gym class to sports clubs but many school systems are cutting physical education and sports

they set quotas on how much adhd medication is manufactured. the idea is to minimize abuse from people who use the drugs illegally to stay awake and alert longer. shortages of generics are so bad, hundreds of families have filed complaints with the food and drug administration. many say they can't find what they need in pharmacies. >> a new study about adhd which could increase the child's risk of developing the disorder, there are two factors in this study. researchers in new york found children who were exposed to gestational diabetes and raised low income households. they're 14 times more likely to develop adhd by the time they're 6 years old. the risk significantly increases when both circumstances exist. it has been on the rise especially among minority women. before we take a break, it is time for the question of the morning. and it is today's question concerns a driving skill which
