teens and 20s. a very blustery day with sunrise here at 7:27. here is a look at the snow showers this morning. they're up mainly in pennsylvania, west virginia, getting into western maryland as well. we've got some winter storm warnings as you get into western allegheny and garrett counties. four inches of snow in garrett county through 4:00 from this storm. 29 in washington. with 25 in gaithersburg. it is 27 for fredericksburg. luray down at 24. cumberland is 25. off to the east around the bay, temperatures only in the low 30s. that's the warm stuff. when you factor in the wind, wind chills this morning, lots and lots of mid to upper teens. bundle up for that. actual high temperatures only in the upper 20s in the shenandoah valley to low 30s here in washington. don't be surprised if you see a few flurries. monika samtani, it is 5:00 a.m. how is it looking so far? >> it is looking very good. all around town, you got the volume building. you're going to see more traffic than last week.

everyone is headed back to work and school. not a bad ride around town. 95 to bw parkway out of baltimore. a live look. if you're planning to head on the beltway here at the wilson bridge on the south side of town, you're fine. no problems all the way up into college park as you pass route 50 and the greenbelt area as well. let's go back over to the maps. this time, we'll go into southern maryland. no problems to report if you're traveling out of brandywine, route 4, route 5, route 301, everything up into oxon hill. live look at route 50 from the bay bridge through annapolis and everything looks pretty much like this. coming up in my next report, we'll go into virginia at 5:09. >> thanks, monika. >> today is the final day of federal workers being transferred to the mark center will start moving into their offices. you that controversial project is nearly seven years in the making dating back to the 2005 base realignment and closure commissions recommendations. 9news now reporter delia gonsalvess is live at the mark

center with more on this story. good morning, delia. >> good morning, andrea, mike. you can call this d day for lots of folks in the northern virginia area coming here to the mark center. 6400 employees will be filing into that building later this morning. so, if you're home right now, preparing for your morning commute, brace yourself for what many have predicted will be a traffic nightmare. the final federal employees move into the mark center today. we're talking a total of 6400 people commuting to the alexandria building on top of the estimated 200,000 people who travel on 395 in northern virginia every single work day. virginia lawmakers have long lobbied against this plan because of the traffic problems it could cause. here's what they had to say a short time ago when congress struck a deal with the army to provide 2,000 parking spaces here. >> the pentagon is responsible

for building the infrastructure necessary to accommodate the 6,400 additional employees who will be moving into that building. >> i'll go pick him up in march when the building is at fill occupancy and drive him to the mark center during the rush hour traffic. >> well, that was senator warner's offer to defense secretary leon panetta. i don't know if it was a promise or a threat but you can tell from that sound byte that lots of lawmakers are worried about the traffic nightmare that could be caused this morning so prepare yourself when you're heading out of your house this morning. now, there is no metro access to this building. lots of employees who have already been commuting here said it was a little sticky. they've been commuting on the metro then they have to get on a shuttle to come to the mark center building. those who won't be driving will be on a shuttle to get here eventually. coming up in a half hour, we'll tell you how some folks are not only worried about this

location off seminary road as a traffic problem but they say it could pose a safety hazard as well. we'll have that coming up in a half hour. andrea, mike? >> delia gonsalves reporting live outside the epicenter of where traffic might be today, the mark center in arlington. thank you. >> resources tell 9news now alcohol was a factor in the deadly new year's day crash in bethesda. it happened on jones bridge road early sunday morning. 20-year-old nick clayton and 18-year-old caitlin marie gallagher were both killed. friends say gallagher was in her second trimester of pregnancy and clayton's mother had died a few months ago. they were riding in a white 2007 chevy trailblazer when the driver lost control of the suv, barreled over the sidewalk, hit a fence and slammed into a tree. the driver and two other passengers were injured. a young mother with a 2- year-old in the car is lucky she didn't get into a wreck. prince william county police say someone cut her brake line.

the brakes wouldn't engage. fortunately, the vehicle eventually came to a safe stop. now a woodbridge, virginia man is under arrest for allegedly tampering with the car. police say 36-year-old kevin reilly of fall brook lane knows the car owner. prince george's county police are trying to identify three people who robbed the 7- eleven on new year's eve. check out the surveillance photos. this is from a camera inside the store on livingston road. not easy to see their identities. police say they robbed the store at 6:00 a.m. saturday. information in the case could be as much as $1,000, if you have any information, please call prince george's county police. time for the latest "your money" report of the morning. >> good morning, jessica doyle. how are you my dear? >> i'm doing great. we're all back together. the gang's all back. >> it feels good. >> a new year. we're excited for it. wall street excited, too. maybe a fresh start. ation stocks were higher.

investors will get new numbers on the latest jobs numbers. the unemployment rate currently stands at 8.6%. last friday, the market finished 2011 on a down note. red arrows there. the dow fell 69 points, ended the year at 12,217. overall, the dow gained 5.5%. the nasdaq dropped 8 points and was down nearly 2% last year. s&p 500 dropped by 5 points and it ended the year essentially flat. well, the euro turned 10 years old and hardly anyone is celebrating this anniversary. had a really rough 2011-2012 could be even tougher. in the beginning, the main criticism of the urobak ten years ago is it made everything more expensive. now, that's taken a backseat to the euro zone debt crisis. we have a morning coffee alert for you. have you had trouble recently finding your favorite brand of

welcome back. 5:09 on this tuesday morning. this blustery tuesday morning. temps down in the 20s. it is going to be a cold, a very cold tuesday around here. might even see a few flurries or snow showers. day planner calling for sun early. we'll end up mostly cloudy today and windy. winds out of the northwest at some 20, 25 miles per hour with the highs only in the low 30s.

wind chill in the teens and 20s. monika? >> we're going to take a live look in downtown pennsylvania avenue near the willard hotel. there are no problems to report here in northwest. but in northeast, watch out for water main break closing mt. olivet road at bladensburg road. in my next report, another look at area roadways at 5:17. andrea? >> thank you, monika. making news now at 5:10, the search for suspected killer of a park ranger in washington state is over. the body of benjamin barnes was spotted in chest deep snow in mt. rainier. barnes shot and killed park ranger margaret anderson sunday morning. authorities believe barnes was on the run after wounding four people in a new year's eve shooting. police in los angeles now have a suspect in custody after a string of weekend arsons. an attorney who works as a part- time sheriff's deputy spotteda a mini van connected to the intentionally-set fires and made the stop. more than 50 fires were set causing nearly $3 million in

damages. tonight, voters will cast their ballots in the iowa caucuses. the republican presidential hopefuls have been hard at work across the state trying to snatch up the undecide voter and there are plenty of them. after tonight, it is off to new for next week's primary. have you cleared away your holiday decorations yet? coming up at 5:39, one "american idol" man has a -- one maryland man has a good reason for keeping his 250,000 christmas lights turned on. >> the redskins clear out their lockers and veterans speculate on their futures with the team. >> if you could stand a couple of freezing days, howard has a warm-up in the forecast.

garrett county, maryland, they're closed today. they have winter storm warnings going on until 4:00 this afternoon. the rest of you, the all- important bus stop forecast, we'll get it right. we're looking at partly cloudy skies here in the immediate metro. this cold though. temps in the 20s. windy, too. winds gusting to 20 miles per hour. wind chills are down to the teens. sunrise not until 7:27. day planner, 9:00, 32. northwest wind at 20. going to feel closer to 20, 22 degrees here and we'll have wind chills all day in the teens and 20s with a noontime temperature of 33. flurries or snow showers scattered about this afternoon. 5:00 temperature only 30. it is not even going to feel like that. probably feel closer to 20. indoor recess with the wind chills, what we're looking at. scattered snow showers and flurries. pennsylvania, west virginia, western maryland. they might be trying to sneak into northern frederick county up toward winchester and out

toward steven city perhaps. areas up toward westminster as well. we'll watch out for some of those particular areas. maybe get some flurries. temperatures down in the 20s. we've got all temperatures down in the 20s with wind chills in the teens with 28 in sterling this morning and manassas. 27 for arlington. it is 27 also in crofton. baden, one of the warm spots over at college park. in lleytonville this morning, 26. at reagan national, 29. clear skies. feels like 19 with a northwest wind at 12. it is gusting over 20 miles per hour in many areas. mild temperatures out to the southwest. these will move in the next couple of days. cold air is in place. with the cold air coming in across the lakes and hitting the higher terrains, you can see all of the snow showers being squeezed out from the very cold air right now. not much of it making it past the mountains although as you look at the future cast today, we're expecting a few of the flurries and snow showers at times to come across the areas

in northern virginia and maryland and seeing some of those here by 6:00 east of the bay. by tomorrow, another disturbance may bring us a chance for late day flurries or snow showers and there it goes here by wednesday night. it will be out of here. as we look at the forecast for the next three days, today, cold, windy, flurries and snow showers this afternoon. 33. tonight, teens and 20s. late day flurries and snow showers. milder thursday at 45. by friday and saturday, we're back in the 50s turning wet on sunday which may end as a little bit of snow with some snow levels. here's monika samtani stepping in with your timesaver traffic. >> serving in good shape. volumes will be a lot heavier than last week. everyone is back headed to work and school. luckily no real construction to deal with. everything is looking good around town. let's go over to the west side of town first at the american legion bridge, we're fine on west side crossing the river here. roosevelt bridge, key bridge on the gw parkway is fine as well.

no delays through centreville and over to the beltway on 66. back over to the map, this time, let's go to the north side of town right through silver spring, let's take a live look on the outer loop of the beltway. colesville road looking good between college park and bethesda. no problems on 270 coming in from frederick as well. coming up in my next report, we'll go into virginia at 5:24 and speaking of virginia, a couple of notes for virginia drivers, the old lewinsville road bridge over the beltway in mclean is coming down. the demolition is set for tonight at 11:00. old bridge is one of about 20 over the beltway which need to be replaced to make room for the new high occupancy toll lane. crews will be working in the area overnight for the next three to four weeks. drivers in arlington could soon be able to find out just how long it will take to get to their destination. the county plans to install a real time travel system with message signs for drivers. however, it is still searching

the ground. watch out for that one. show up in martinsburg. old town, maryland, north of paw paw in allegheny county. good morning and thanks for watching. let's talk about what we can expect though for this tuesday morning. a cold morning out there. it is going to be a cold day in fact. highs will not be moving much from where they are now. winds by the way are going to be a problem. too. 15 to 25, may gust to 30 at times. that will keep wind chills down in the teens and the 20s. you can see snow streamers coming in through pennsylvania and west virginia. in western maryland, coming into frederick county, virginia now, in toward jefferson and berkeley counties here, western maryland as i said and also eastern west virginia, lots of snow showers that aren't being picture up. even north of frederick. we're seeing a little bit of snow around 15. your temperatures this morning, mid to upper 20s with wind chills, get ready, down in the teens. bundle up. let's go over to monika samtani now at 5:29 with your timesaver

police are trying to identify a body found at a local marina. >> that's right. two boaters discovered a man's body monday at a belle haven marina in the 6400 block of george washington parkway. no word on how the man died. fairfax county police are awaiting results of autopsies in hopes of getting more answers. however, they have not seen any signs of foul play, they say. >> president obama and the first family will return to the white house this morning after leaving honolulu last night. now that he's back from his ten-day christmas vacation, the president plans to host a live web chat with supporters in iowa with the state's republican caucus. tomorrow, the president heads to cleveland, ohio, to talk about the economy. after years of debate about the potential traffic impact, this week, the mark center will be fully staffed with federal employees to see if the debate lands on which side. 6400 workers, the first of them by brac started arriving last summer. the final waves are showing up as of this morning.

delia gonsalves is live in alexandria with the story. oh, boy, here we go, delia. >> it seems like many people are trying to beat the commute. we've seen about a couple dozen cars. people being dropped off in fact. folks driving right into the development. so, they're trying to beat the traffic getting out of the house early. arriving to work a bit early because everyone has heard the warning. it is probably going to be a traffic nightmare today and this morning. until folks get used to it, like monika ca was mentioning, another 6,000 drivers plus. this massive structure here, the huge high rise right off 395 at seminary road. there's no metro access. if you're not driving, you're taking a shuttle. the defense department has tried to address the traffic problem. many solutions including a $20 million design won't be complete until 2016. in the meantime, today is a big test. how will our local highways handle the 6400 federal

employees on top of the normal 200,000 daily commuters who travel through northern virginia on 395. the move to the marc center, of course, is part of the 2005 brac, the base realignment program and many have tried to stop the project not only because of potential traffic problems but safety concerns as well. we've got 6,000 federal employees who are in a building within eyesight of the interstate highway. it can be approached from multiple directions and the number of guards is relatively modest. then when you add the structural weaknesses of the building in place, you say to yourself what were they thinking? >> reporter: but everyone is promising the utmost security but on the minds of many, traffic. my advice, leave home early! mike? >> good advice. hopefully somebody takes it. >> a local activist plans to file paperwork today to recall d.c.'s mayor and much of the city council. this is according to "the

washington examiner." name is frederick butler. he has been recruiting supporters to his cause. he's seeking to recall mayor vince gray, council chair kwame brown and council members harry thomas jr., mary shea and jim graham. today marks one year since gray took office and is legally the first day a recall can actually begin. months after flooding damage from tropical storm lee, the prince george's county administration building is scheduled to reopen january 17th. parts of the ground floor will still be off-limits. nearly two feet of floodwater inundated that level and more repairs are needed there. so far, the bill has surpassed $14 million and insurance only covers $5 million of it. the arlington county board held its first meeting of the year yesterday. at the top of their agenda, electing a new chairperson. when the ballots were tallied, mary hynes was elected for the new year. walter tejada as her vice chair. tejada said one of his

quantico. i'll have more on what's going on in virginia at 5:48. andrea? >> thank you, monika. >> today, d.c. residents can start disposing of their christmas trees. the city's department of public works will collect trees and wreaths for recycling through january 14th. now, they do ask that you remove all decorations including lights and place your tree or wreath in a tree box in front of your home for pickup. tree collection is getting underain fairfax county. people with christmas trees less than eight feet tall can put them out on the curb for the next two weeks. people with taller trees should contact their recycler for details. i'm scared to read this next story. some neighbors may be annoyed that i massive lights display in maryland. check this out. charles daniels is keeping his decorations up for a really good reason. he's a finalist, a national finist in a deck the house contest. this year, daniels put up

250,000 flights at his home on durham road east. daniels, oh, my gosh. daniels says his extreme holiday lighting began 12 years ago after he retired. he put a little more time into his decorations. goodness! that's somebody's home. >> really. >> that's better than -- >> being retired, you can really you know, if you enjoy decorating which i do, you've got the time and you accumulate the numbers of lights that i have. >> he apparently has a cherry picker and a crane to put this stuff up as well. he's used up a half a million lights. but cut back recently because the electricity costs. if his home wins the contest, he'll get $500 to help offset the electric bill. howard county schools will be the real winner. a $100,000 prize. i think i'm going to vote for him. >> i think howard county should get in on that, too.

partly sunny when the sun comes up. snow showers north and west of d.c. day planner today. 32 degrees at 8:00. still some sun here in the metro. more clouds and sun and maybe even overcast with flurries and snow showers at times this afternoon. northwesterly winds, 23, 22 miles per hour. that's the sustained winds. you factor in the gusts to 25 to 30 with the wind chills will struggle. won't get much out of the 20s, the low 20s this afternoon. even at 8:00, 28 still with a northwest wind at 18. it will be a cold painful day to be outside. look at the snow flurries and snow showers coming through western maryland into hagerstown and winchester. live doppler 9000 hd, big picture pretty quiet but north and west, this is where we're picking up the snow. that's flying here through winchester. the snow showers coming into warren and clark counties. this might make it into southern loudoun, heard from steve up in cross junction.

their way. as for one-time front-runner newt gingrich -- >> i don't think i will win. >> he appeared to throw in the towel monday only to take it back. >> we may pull off one of the great upsets in the history of the iowa caucuses. >> the former house speaker is hoping for a big enough comeback to keep him in the race. susan mcinnis, cbs news, des moines, iowa. making news now at 5:52, the flames from a gas line explosion finally started to die down overnight in kentucky. the explosion happened in a horse farm and flames shot 1500 feet into the air. 30 nearby homes were evacuated. no one was injured. no word on what caused the blast. an earthquake expert blames an injection well for causing a series of tremors around youngstown, ohio. it might take a year for the waste water related rumbles to dissipate even though the well was closed last week.

flurries and snow showers. bundle up. wind chills only in the teens and 20s. andrea and mike? >> thank you, howard. each friday, students in montgomery county are able to get food to take home for the weekend. >> it is all part of a program that fights childhood hunger. in this week's hero central, skwrárbg hayward features ministries. >> the backpack program has been in existence. 600 middle and elementary school youngsters are provided two breakfasts, two lunches and two dinners along with snacks. >> malnutrition affects the cognitive growth of a child which means that if a child is not fed with the proper nutrition in their formative years but then later on the family financial forecast changes, still the damage that was done of all of those years of malnutrition is irreparable. >> at south lake elementary school in gaithersburg, counselor terry programs says

almost 90% of their students receive free breakfast and lunch at school. many depend on the weekend food program. >> this small little bag of food is very important to our children. they look forward to it every week. they make a point of coming to school on friday so that they can get their backpack. >> you know without these backpacks, many youngsters in tpwraoepl county would go hungry over the weekend. they're filled with kid friendly, nonperishable vitamin fortified foods. volunteers with women who care ministries assemble the food sacks each week. deliver them to schools and discreetly place the sacks in the youngster's backpacks. >> they eat a lot of junk food ordinarily or perhaps they don't have regularly prepared meals that are well-balanced. we know they're getting the
