grant, hardy and hampshire counties. >> snow showers were something. >> she didn't see anything. >> made the ground briefly white for awhile. >> they caused accidents on 270. >> we have a little video to share with you. some of the scenes out of montgomery village yesterday. while they were coming down, i gotta tell you, i got caught in something worse than this. the ground, a little bit of white stickage on the sidewalks. 270 had problems middle of the day. we had all of the problems on i- 81 as well. we're not expecting anything like this today. couple of flurries would not be out of the question later on this afternoon or this evening. for some, this is some of the first snow we saw since october 29th since having a very quiet and mild december. anything but mild this morning with temperatures down in the teens. we're looking at temperatures today again 30 by noon and highs around 35 with a 5:00 p.m. possibility of a flurry or two. not expecting the snow showers,
5:01 am
snow squalls like we had yesterday. you can see some of those, about 12 hours ago. we still had a few around. and they quickly moved around. clouds this morning off to our south and west. we generally have been clear. we've had some reports, folks are able to see the meteor showers going on during the overnight. they were occurring over the last few hours. the folks that went out to brave it, they were hearty souls. temps are now 89 in win chest -- 9 in winchester. warm spots being right on the bay. not warm at all. annapolis at 19. the wind chills this morning, down to 5 and andrews and manassas. 6 in hagerstown. feels like 8 in d.c. with highs this afternoon getting up to about 35 or so. we do have milder days ahead and more on that coming up at about 5:14. right now, here's monika. she's got the timesaver traffic. >> even though the roads are dry right now, we started off with an accident early this morning in bethesda. right here on the inner loop before river road.
5:02 am
in fact, let's go there live right now. crews continue to clean up and investigate what happened there. just along the left side of the road now, looks like they've moved off to the shoulder. it left slow traffic for you at 5:01 heading northbound on the beltway. southbound it looks like everything was cleared up and you're good to go if you're leaving the 270 spur. back over to the map, we'll go over to 270. no problems to report coming out of frederick down to the point where the lanes divide. we'll take a live look and prove it to you. no problems to report as you head southbound on 270. then here is what it looks like right near the willard intercontinental hotel. pennsylvania avenue and 14th street. no problems to report around the ellipse or around constitution avenue downtown. in my next report, we'll update you on what's going on downtown. >> campaign 2012, it does not get much closer than this. >> mitt romney won the iowa caucus by the slimmest of margins. early this morning, the chairman of the iowa republican party announced the former
5:03 am
massachusetts governor had 30,015 votes, only 8 more than former pennsylvania senator rick santorum. each got 25% of the vote. in about eight minutes, we'll go live to des moines for a breakdown of the razor-thin finish and what happens to the candidates way back in the pack. but there is a local political shocker this morning. sources tell 9news now that d.c. councilman harry thomas jr. will resign from office. >> he's been under scrutiny for months since being accused of stealing $300,000 from a city youth program and using it for personal use. 9news now reporter delia gonsalves is live outside the wilson building with more on this. wow. >> he's accused of using $300,000 in city funds for lavish vacations and a luxury suv. the suv was raided -- sorry, was apprehended during a raid at his home. this is pretty surprising. our bruce johnson first broke the story at 11:00. this is the end of harry thomas jr.'s political career.
5:04 am
thomas is expected to cut a plea deal with prosecutors in the coming days, admitting guilt to one felony count which could land him behind bars for up to three years. a council member agreed to pay the $300,000 back without admitting guilt though he missed hit last payment of $50,000 but it was an fbi and i.r.s. raid at his northeast home that proved to be too much to overcome. according to sources, he told advisors "i just couldn't beat the tax charges." now, back out here live outside the wilson building, the council will come back in a few hours this morning and in a twist of political irony, they're expected to cast a vote on an ethics bill later this morning. no word though if thomas will be here. back to you. >> all right, delia gonsalves reporting live from outside the wilson building in northwest. >> d.c. police are investigating the city's second homicide of the year. this was last night, 1500 block of 45th street in northeast.
5:05 am
officers say they got there, they found a man with several gunshot wounds to the chest. police have not released the man's name or any information on possible suspects or even a motive in the case. you've gotta look at this one. police have released surveillance video of a guy being called the bandage bandit. yes, he is covered head to toe, head to neck in bandages and one arm is in a sling but he's accused of walking into a cvs in gaithersburg on christmas eve and threatening to pull a gun on employees. then he didn't demand money. he wanted drugs. he got away with a load of oxycontin, a powerful painkiller. police hope releasing the surveillance video will stir up some leads. five minutes after 5:00. time for "your money" report now. >> jessica doyle is here with today's headlines. >> good morning. that's the way to start the new year on wall street, right? i like it. but before we get too excited, it remains to be seen if yesterday's big rally is the so- called january effect.
5:06 am
let's enjoy it in the meantime. ladies and gentlemen, i bring you the dow's highest level in more than 5 months. >> did you have some coffee? >> i had some coffee. 12,397. it was a 1.4% rally. nasdaq added 43 points or 1.7%. s&p 500 gaped almost 20 points or about 1.5%. the federal reserve is becoming more transparent. it now plans to update the public four times a year on how long it plans to keep short term interest rates at record lows. that could potentially encourage businesses and consumers to borrow money and stimulate the economy. it is the central bank's latest move to make its communications more open and clear. if you have not tried the sugar substitute traoáuf ya yet, you may be behind the curve. it ranks behind splenda as the number two calorie-free substitute on the market. the so-called natural

alternative costs a lot more than its competitors. that's probably why packets tend to disappear at coffee bars and into purses faster than other sweeteners. so much so that stores like whole foods in silver spring tucks them behind the counter now. wall street journal reports there are hundreds of new truvia sweetened products and for example, a light yogurt that's coming out this month. >> i've never tried it. have you? >> i own a packet. like a box of it. i haven't actually opened it. i don't know if it is -- the pronunciation. >> it is like ricola. you say one, you say the other. i've tried it. it is ok. >> all right. >> figure it out. >> maybe we'll do a taste test. >> you won't have that in the next half hour. what will you? >> i'll talk about how spam is getting friendly. >> computer spam? >> you'll have to wait and see. >> if it is the food one, it is
5:08 am
not really. if you went to bed before midnight, the iowa caucus results weren't the only thing you missed. >> you also didn't see the dramatic overtime toepbgd the sugar bowl. highlights ahead in sports. >> will they have the truvia bowl, too? >> we'll head out live to des moines for more on what happens now with the virtual tie between romney and santorum. thanks, mom. who are you calling "mom"?

5:11 am
romney does get the bragging rights. eight votes. it was incredible to watch through the night. mitt romney comes backs with 30,015. santorum, 30,007. if this was an official contest, this is really more of a straw poll. delegates aren't awarded. they come in later. there would have been calls for a recount. it would have been really intense. i would say two winners go on to new hampshire but new hampshire could be a very different story. >> it is expected to be a different story, isn't it, susan considering mitt romney has a strong lead in the polls so far. >> oh, yes. he's expected to take new hampshire with no problem. also, reports, santorum has a bit of a wallet problem as well. so, he's had some trouble raising money. he's been hoping if he does -- if he did have a strong finish here that perhaps some donors would open up their wallets and help him out. we'll see if that happens. right now, they're all headed there immediately. no rest for these guys. they're going to go out in new

hampshire with others. rick perry doesn't look like he's going to show up. bachmann, we're not sure about. we'll see. ron paul, very confident as well. so, it is going to be interesting and also, it is possible this could go on for awhile. >> you were talking about some of the other candidates, rick perry going back to texas to reassess, that usually sounds like i'll suspend my campaign but michele bachmann said she's going forward until south carolina and ron paul who came in a strong third, he's going to keep going, too. >> reporter: don't forget jon huntsman waiting there in new hampshire as well. he's been preparing for that and he believes he can make a late surge as well. so, we are hoping for another nail biter in new hampshire. two debates this weekend, might be more interesting than the hundreds that we've seen so far. >> it seems like it, doesn't it? one more question. your opinion on michele bachmann. she finished way back in the pack.
5:13 am
she's going to continue on to south carolina. she's had defections in her campaign staff. could she be doing this to pay off campaign debts? >> that could be. because if they stay in, you follow the money, they can still continue to raise money. she is still showing the confidence. another person on her team came out of the media and said you know, something to the effect they were going to reassess as well. she came out and quashed that and said no, she's going to stay in the race. but remember, south carolina is a tough one. this one is really a state that holds a lot of that republican base and so apparently it is going to be a pretty tough test for the contenders who make it down there. but as far as we know, bachmann will be around for a bit. >> and so will susan mcginnis to bring us the results of what's coming up, the debates and primaries ahead. >> we'll have more on the iowa caucuses coming up in the 5:30 half hour plus the capitals are starting to look much better on the ice. highlights at 5:25. >> florida farmers are
