americans. >> reporter: today, he'll begin airing his first ad in new hampshire, a state he's counting on to kick start his campaign. drew levinson, cbs news, washington. newt gingrich, jon huntsman and rick santorum are joining rick perry's lawsuit to get on the primary ballot in virginia. a u.s. district judge in richmond granted their motion. >> perry filed suit after his campaign failed to get the 10,000 required signatures. only ron paul and mitt romney met the requirements to be on the ballot. >> d.c. mayor vincent gray and other city leaders plan to take their case for d.c. statehood to new hampshire. >> it is part of an effort to get state legislatures across the country to pass resolutions supporting statehood for the district. new hampshire lawmakers introduced such a resolution last year and d.c. leaders say they're pushing to make sure it moves forward. >> being able to have the ability to control the resources generated here in the district of columbia so that the $5.5 billion contributed to

the wherewithal of the city by the citizens of the city will be used not only for the purposes of this city but the decision about those resources will rest solely with the people in the city. >> council chair kwame brown, council members michael brown and david kitania attended the announcement. they're expected to be a part of the city's delegation as well. >> president obama will make a rare appearance at the pentagon. he'll join defense officials in outlining a strategy for a leaner u.s. military. the proposal is expected to include plans to cut tens of thousands of ground troops and invest more in air and sea power. president obama spent his wednesday making a campaign stop in ohio. while, therehe announced the appointment of cordray to lead the consumer protection bureau. >> the financial firms have armies of lobbyists in washington looking out for their interests. you need somebody looking out for your interests and fighting

for you and that's richard cordray. his job will be to protect families like yours from the abuses of the financial industry. >> cordray was first appointed to the position last summer but that sparked a long battle with republicans who said the new office had too much power and no oversight. the nomination was blocked by the g.o.p. just last month but with congress in a pro forma session, the president used a recess appointment to give him the job for two years without congressional approval. >> today, d.c. councilman harry thomas jr.'s attorneys will be scheduled to meet with prosecutors. he's expected to sipe a plea deal which would force him to resign from office and plead guilty to tax evasion. the deal also carries a two to three year prison sentence as well. the fbi and i.r.s. raided thomas' home last month and investigators were looking into claims he stole public money from a baseball program for kids and then used about $300,000 on an suv, motorcycle, trips and other personal expenses. publicly at least, thomas continues to deny the

allegations. d.c. police have released a sketch of a man they say is wanted in a sexual assault case. on a police believe a man matching this description is responsible for kidnapping a woman and attacking her in front of her child. on december 29th, the woman was stopped in traffic about a block from verizon center when a man jumped into her car. she says he then sexually assaulted her at gunpoint all while her 1-year-old child sat in the backseat. the man eventually let them both go. if you have any information about this crime, take a look at the sketch on the screen, call d.c. police. yesterday, search teams were in port washington looking for the body of shakita bell. she was murdered in 1996. her boyfriend confessed to killing her and burying her in the woods off old fort road. police have been unable to find bell's remains. no word on what led to the renewed search. bell's family said they would like to give her a proper burial. a 4-year-old boy from

waldorf, maryland, caused his family's home to go up in flames. investigators say the child was playing with a lighter and he lit a mattress on fire tuesday. the flames spread from the bedroom causing major damage to the duplex. no one was seriously injured but the fire did spread to the home next door where neighbors say they barely escaped. >> a lot of smoke. and it was hard to breathe. and i was trying to run. we have five animals. i was trying to run and get the animals out so they wouldn't get hurt. it was pretty scary. you don't leave lighters and matches out to where a child can get them. >> the house where the fire started is going to be torn down. the neighboring home will be repaired. here's a look at some other things making news now at 4:34... an eighth grader in brownsville, texas was shot and killed during a standoff with police inside a school hallway. police say 15-year-old gonzalez took out a weapon after school started. when police arrived, the

student engaged the officers and was shot. no one else was hurt. the weapon turned out to be a pellet gun which looks like a real handgun. the german national suspected in a series of car fires in los angeles will wait a little longer for his arraignment now. harry burkhart is due back in court later this month. wednesday, he was charged with 37 counts of arson. he's being held on almost $3 million of bail. a little bit of shaking going on in south carolina. the state experienced a small earthquake yesterday. the u.s. geological survey says the 2.6 magnitude quake is the fourth small quake the palmetto state has experienced in the last month. the previous quakes were december 7th, december 21st and new year's day. west virginia put on a scoring show unlike any other in college football post-season history. during the orange bowl last night. everything said and done, the 23rd ranked mountaineers put up 70 points. a record for any bowl game. they dominated 14th ranked

low of 48 cents a share yesterday could be removed from the nearest stock exchange if it doesn't rise above a dollar. as store stocks, it rose 21 points in trading yesterday. the nasdaq, s&p 500 didn't do much, ended the day pretty much flat. retailers have something to celebrate in the new year. a surge of shoppers helped to boost sales during the last week of the holiday. the international council of shopping centers reports store sales rose 5.3% post-christmas. the mall trade group says the increased use of gift cards, the mild weather and the federal holiday helped to contribute to christmas week sales surge. the big three u.s. automakers predict this will be a good year for auto sales. chrysler closed out 2011 with the biggest sales bump, 26%! g.m. sales were up by 13% over the year and ford posted a 9% gain. toyota though did not meet its expectations last year.

it was hurt by supply problems after the tsunami in japan. the company said the sales dropped 7% in 2011 but sales of its best selling camry jumped 7% in december. and "consumer reports" named the redesigned 2012 camry the top family sedan. meantime, us airways is expanding service out of reagan national airport. the plan, to add new daily nonstop flights to 14 cities starting next month. the new routes include washington to birmingham, alabama, fayetteville, north carolina and rice lip. expansion is the result of takeoff and landing slots with delta airlines at la guardia airport. it will be interesting to see if prices come down as a result of that for washingtonians. sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't. >> that's why they went up because everybody stopped doing the extra flights. all of the seats available. thanks, jess. the american cancer society releases some good and not so good numbers when it comes to

good morning. it is friday eve. and the temperature is double what it was yesterday. >> people who run outside, work outside, much happier. look at these numbers from yesterday morning when we had wind chills down to near zero in spots. >> it will come back. >> you know, it is going to come back here. we'll get a break from anything too cold probably for about a week. toward the end of next week, another shot of some arctic air will try to return. between now and then, we're in good shape. let's get you going with the bus stop forecast this morning. it is cold out there. we have cloudy skies. even a stray flurry. call it cloudy to partly cloudy. 20s and even some 30s this morning. low to mid-30s over the next few hours. it sets at 5:00 on the nose. we're looking at a decent amount of sunshine once we get past this little piece of energy this morning, early this morning. 41 by noon. winds be will be out of the west to northwest up to 10, 15 miles per hour. it will be a bit breezy at times. looking for a high of about 44

with 8:00 temps back in the 30s. tonight, another chilly night. it is january. lows down in the mid-20s to low 30s. that's typical for this time of year. yesterday evening, we had one area of an upper disturbance, we'll call it, push through. that produced a little dusting of know. it looks worse than it was. a lot of this didn't reach the ground. this morning, the weaker disturbance coming through. this may produce not much more than a stray flurry. nobody is reporting anything regarding the flurries. clearly a couple of things on radar. air is relatively dry. temps a lot warmer than yesterday morning. in some cases, more than 20 degrees warmer than yesterday with readings now in martinsburg and frederick at 27. cumberland is 36 right now. it is 28 for culpepper. 27 manassas. 30 even from la plata and andrews and on the bay, 34. not much wind. wind chills a lot better than yesterday. also, they're running in the 20s to about 30 or so. so, yeah, a much calmer nicer

start to the day. cloudy skies at reagan national. south-southwesterly wind at 3. it is a lot more humid than it was yesterday in the sense the dew points yesterday morning were below zero. today, they have risen into the 20s as the arctic air leaves. you see the white and the pink way up here. that's the arctic air. it has really lifted out of the country. caribou is 15. look at the 20s, 30s, 40s, really dominate much of the u.s. very comfortable, very mild for january across much of the country with the jet stream coming onshore of the pacific northwest then going up into canada. this is keeping the arctic air way up there. the dip in the east. even this is going to be pulling out. so, i'm expecting some mild conditions around here starting today in the 40s then 50s friday, saturday, and even next week, a few 50s on the 7-day forecast. a cold start. by this afternoon, with the sunshine, temperatures warming into the 40s. few late snow showers across parts of new york state. we may see a couple of clouds

drifting by from time to time. overall, a sunny day. a couple of clouds tomorrow morning but another sunny day and even milder on friday. friday afternoon, we're going to have highs in the mid-50s in most areas. that will set the stage for a pretty decent weekend around here. and then as we head into saturday, other than some mountain flurries or snow showers or a couple of sprinkles, should be pretty quiet here also for the weekend as the disturbance sunday, that looks like it is going to stay south of us. not expecting much in the way of any problems from that. so, looking at the forecast. today, a chilly day. couple of clouds early. we'll be in the 40s this afternoon. about 44. tonight, 20s and 30s. tomorrow, 55. saturday, 54. still nice. maybe a few more clouds saturday then on friday, on sunday, upper 40s. look at the lows in town in the 30s. little bit cooler sunday and monday. tuesday, 50. some rain moves in wednesday and maybe into thursday behind that. that's when we could have another shot of cold air late

next week into next weekend. not a bad stretch at all. let's go over to monika samtani here at 4:47. any bad stretches on the roads? >> no, no bad stretches on the roads. at least construction workers had it is a little tiny bit warmer than the other night. what they're doing is clearing everything up before 5:00, especially here on the outer loop of the beltway, in the tysons area, inbound 66, that ramp to the outer loop, inbound dulles toll road, the ramp to the outer loop as well. you should be clearing it up if that's where you're headed. you should be good to go in the next few minutes. if you're planning to head over to the tysons area, let's take a live look at the toll road. no problems to report with the exception of all of the metro construction that's on-going, even during the day. back over to the maps, this had time, we'll head over to maryland. 95, the bw parkway, no problems from baltimore down to the beltway. we'll go over to 270 coming in from urbana. there had been overnight construction both directions of 270 at route 80 in the left lane. that should be clearing up

shortly as well. we'll we could a live look at the beltway at river road. no problems here. this is basically what it looks like through silver spring and bethesda. in my next report, we'll go into virginia at 4:55. >> the federal government is giving more money to cover virginia's costs to repair damage from tropical storm lee. commonwealth will get $6.5 million from the department of transportation to pay for road and infrastructure repairs. last september, flooding caused by lee damaged or washed out 15 roads and bridges in northern virginia. all have since reopened. this grant is in addition to $2.1 million promised to the state in november. the american cancer society's annual report shows that cancer rates are down again this year as are deaths. better treatment and screening has saved more than a million lives in the last 20 years. >> alison harmelin shows us some cancers are still on the rise. >> enrique knew something was wrong. he had pain every time he ate.

>> er it would start into my shoulder. >> a cat scan revealed he had pancreatic cancer, one of several cancers on the rise according to a new report from the american cancer society. >> we're seeing a rise in cancers of the thyroid, cancers of the esophagus, cancer of the liver, cancer of the pancreas and cancer of the throat. >> it is estimated there will be more than 1.6 million new cases of cancer and more than a half million people will die in the u.s. this year alone. doctors say obesity, lack of exercise and high caloric intake are behind many of the new cases. >> there is some encouraging news. cancer rates and deaths continue to decline in both men and women when it comes to common cancers like breast, lung, prostate and colorectal cancer. experts say the key is screening. >> we're catching it earlier. so, we're catching the abnormal tissue earlier so they don't turn into cancer. >> thanks to improved cancer treatments, he has kept his

cancer in check for more than two years. >> this disease is very silent and that's why the death rate is so incredibly high. the survival rate is 5% after five years. >> but his hopes are high. he plans to be part of that 5%. alison harmelin for cbs news, new york. the american cancer society says obesity may overtake smoke as the number one cause of cancer within the next decade. scientists may be one step closer to developing a vaccine against h.i.v. they tested an experimental vaccine on monkeys and found it did provide partial protection against infection. in monkeys already infected, the vaccine reduced the amount of the virus in the blood. they're now planning tests on people. millions of americans take an aspirin every day to prevent a heart attack. new research finds it may increase the risk of blindness. the study out of the netherlands found people older than 64 who took a daily

aspirin had double the risk developing age-related macular degeneration. the disease is caused when abnormal blood vessels bleed into the center of the eye. the finding needs to be confirmed. pooh emwho currently take aspirin daily should not stop. the number of twins being born in the united states has jumped 76% in the last three decades. in 1980, one in 53 babies was a twin. in 2009, one in 30 is the number. couples using fertility drugs are partially credited for that jump. >> just had one quarterback whose wife gave birth to triplets. time to take a look at the question of the morning. >> the average person does one of these things 70 times per day. is it a, pass gas. >> a little flatulence. >> b, complains or c, check their e-mail. this seems obvious but we'll see which one it is.
