>> congresswoman gabrielle giffords making a rare public appearance at a candlelight vigil in tucson. hello, everybody. i'm bruce johnson. thanks for joining us this sunday night. she led the crowd in the pledge of allegiance on the one year anniversary of that shooting rampage. she stepped on to a stage tonight to cheers from thousands after a day-long series of events to remember the 19 people struck by gunfire. six of the victims died. the youngest a 9-year-old girl. >> to lead us in the pledge of allegiance, welcome home congresswoman. >> reporter: arizona congresswoman gabrielle giffords appeared measured but confident sunday night. she led the pledge of allegiance at a candlelight vigil for victims of the shooting that nearly killed her one year ago. >> one nation under god,

indivisible with liberty and justice for all. [ cheers and applause ] >> reporter: giffords and tucson have come a long way in a year. it was just after 10:00 a.m. on january 8, 2011, when life there changed. giffords was making an appearance outside a safeway store when a gunman started firing. she was shot in the head. among the dead a federal judge and 9-year-old christina taylor green. suzy was shot three times and watched her young friend, christina, die. she said the weekend's events are helping her heal. >> i can't bring christina back but i can take her with me forward. seeing all these people doing the same and getting out warms my heart. >> reporter: giffords has amazed her doctors with her recovery and even return to washington to make an appearance on capitol hill last summer. but she still has a long way to go. giffords return to the shooting

scene for the first time saturday. her husband tweeted this picture to her pointing where she parked her car that day. as for the accused gunman, he pleaded not guilty to 49 charges. he is receiving treatment for mental illness in a missouri prison while awaiting trial. cbs news. >> gifford's husband named each victim who died at the vigil. mark kelly also said those who were injured have shown that healing is indeed possible. president barack obama called the congresswoman today, noting her incredible road to recovery. the white house says the president expressed amazement at the courage and determination that giffords has shown in the aftermath of the shooting. the 41-year-old giffords spent the last year in houston undergoing physical and speech therapy. she's able to walk and talk and actually vote in congress. the three term congresswoman has four months to decide whether to seek re-election. she wasn't there but about a mile and a half from the white house, congresswoman giffords was honored in one of

washington's most historic charges, as part of a nationwide campaign today called too many victims whose aim was to draw attention to the continuing playing of gun violence in the u.s. matt jablow has that story. >> darkness cannot drive out darkness. only light can do that. >> reporter: and so it was tonight that dozens of electric candles were light at the shiloh baptist church in northwest washington on the one year anniversary of the shooting in tucson, which left six people dead and 13 others injured, including congresswoman gabrielle giffords. >> tonight, each of us will light a candle against the darkness of gun violence. >> reporter: the candlelight vigil and prayer service organized by the brady campaign to end gun violence was held to honor not only the victims of the tucson shooting but all 30,000 people who died in the u.s. in 2011 alone as a result of gun violence. >> it's not an easy road to

that's about 270 people every day. tomorrow a montgomery county police officer will receive the congressional bravery award. officer edward patton, jr., is among some 20 police officers from across the country to receive the award. the washington examiner reports he's being honored for his bravery during the 2010 hostage situation at the discovery communications building in silver spring, maryland. officer patton went inside the building to help the hostages. the gunman, james lee, was shot and killed by police. may 14th is the day for a special election to fill the seat vacated by former d.c. councilman harry thomas, jr. thomas resigned from the d.c. council thursday night, hours before entering guilty pleas to stealing more than $350,000 from city youth programs. the source close to the election process informed 9 news now today that the may 14th date for the special election to ward 5 done test will be -- ward 5 contest will

violence today at the occupy oakland site in california. six people were arrested in downtown oakland on charges of vandalism, assaulting a police officer and possession of explosives. it happened during an

antipolice march saturday night. protesters broke windows in the cruisers, vandalized a media van, threw bottles at officers and actually lit a fire. an update tonight to a story about a search and rescue dog that went missing. we first told you about this last night. the dog was located late last night after he vanished from a training session. boy, maryland surae chinn checked with the dog's handler and the people who found him. >> reporter: vito and his handler, sonya heritage are back together again after a frantic three-day search. friends and volunteers are stopping by. >> i'm glad you got it back. >> yeah. good boy. good boy. >> reporter: so where he had gone to? >> i was seeing a flier. the next thing i saw him. >> reporter: vito had trotted into his glass shop. volunteers had been searching all this area. he went missing about a quarter mile from here in the woods before he was found in this

auto body shop. >> like every day, we were bringing the dog here, and play with him. and show that somebody one day was going to come and ask us. >> reporter: but it was rodriguez who saw the flier late last night with vito's picture on it. he called his brother and that's when dog and handler were reunited. sonya came to see the family again today. >> thank you so much. >> we're very happy that they got their dog back, you know. because this is very good, sometimes you don't get it back. >> reporter: the dog will take a week off before he goes back into training. he's tapped to take over his father's position as a certified search and rescue dog. >> so many things it could have gone so many different ways. somebody found him that appreciated him and did the right thing and they're an angel. >> oh, i love you so much. i love you so much. >> reporter: in bowie, surae

chinn, 9 news now. turning elsewhere, an early morning shooting leaves a d.c. man dead. david lee robinson of northwest washington was shot to death just before 2:30 this morning. it happened near 58th and foot street in northeast. tonight, police are offering a reward of up to 25dz,000 for anybody who provides information that leads to an arrest and conviction in this case. cars smashed into a green bay, wisconsin, home this weekend leaving two people critically injured. the crash caused a gas leak at the home. two other people inside the residence managed to escape injury. no word tonight on what caused the driver to lose control. young australian woman is lucky to be alive after a bungee cord snapped about 60 feet above a river. the current began to drag her toward the rapids. the 22-year-old had to dive down multiple times to free her ropes from the rocks.
