>> officer edward paden jr. is among 20 police officers across the country to get the honor. the washington examiner reports he's being honored for his bravery during the 2010 hostage situation at discovery communications in silver spring. officer peyton was on duty when he learned about a gunman at the discovery building. he went inside, helped the hostages, also provided details to other officers at the scene. the gunman, james lee, was shot and killed by police. arizona congresswoman gabrielle giffords has marked the 1 year anniversary of the shooting rampage which left her gravely injure and six people dead. last night in tucson, she attended a candlelight vigil for the victims. she also led hundreds in the pledge of allegiance. the ceremony kept a day of remembrance events held around the country. >> as congresswoman giffords was participating in arizona, she was being honored in one of washington's historic churches. >> it was part of a nation-wide

campaign called too many victims. the aim was to draw attention to the continuing plague of gun violence in the u.s. matt jablow has details. >> darkness cannot drive out darkness. only light can do that. >> reporter: and so it was tonight that dozens of electric candles were lit at the shiloh baptist church in northwest washington on the one-year anniversary of the shooting in tucson which left six people dead and 13 others injured including congresswoman gabrielle giffords. >> tonight, each of us will light a candle against the violence of gun violence. >> the candlelight vigil and prayer service organized by the brady campaign to end gun violence was held to honor not only the victims of the tucson shooting but all 30,000 people who died in the u.s. in 2011 alone as a result of gun violence. >> it is not an easy road to walk. >> nordine jeffries and 16- year-old daughter was shot to death in southeast washington in 2010, was one of tonight's

speakers. >> i will never see my daughter get married, finish college, she didn't even attend a prom. >> reporter: tonight's events here at shiloh baptist was one of 60 similar events across the country where poignant remembrances of the victims of gun violence mixed with passionate calls for increased regulations of guns. >> i was put in the most dangerous situation of my entire life and nearly killed. >> reporter: collin guard was shot -- goddard was shot four times during the 2007 massacre at virginia tech. he now travels the country for the brady campaign, trying, he says, to send a simple but powerful message. which he shared tonight. >> we're on the side of angels. and they're work together, we can help save lives. >> in northwest washington, matt jablow, 9news now. according to the brady campaign, roughly 100,000 people are shot every year in the united states. that works out to nearly 270 people every day. a visit from president

obama -- >> is often cause for excitement but not in dupont circle. residents thought they had more time to park before having to move their vehicles. according to signs which went up thursday, residents had until 9:00 a.m. friday morning to move. but the original 9:00 a.m. time was scratched out to read 6:00 a.m. hours before the president showed up in a neighborhood, restaurant for a meeting, they were ticketing and towing the cars in the 1400 block of 21st street. >> all of the cars are getting towed away. i was just wondering why. so, i would have been pretty upset. >> not going to pay it. i'll send it in. you know, because i don't think it was enough time and i live here. it is not like i park here to work. i live here. i don't think i should have to pay a ticket. >> after 9news contacted metropolitan police chief cathy lanier released a statement. at this time, we're trying to determine who changed the posted times on the signs.

either way, all of the tickets issued will be voided at no cost to the vehicle owners. a maryland hunter was shot this weekend by a fellow hunter in fort washington. the two were in the woods near the 9200 block of oxon hill road. police say the victim was one of five people hunting when he was shot in the stomach by someone else in the group. police say all five will face charges. >> at this point, charges will be pending against all five of the persons because hunting is obviously illegal in our park, anything owned by the maryland park and planning commission. >> the 60-year-old victim is expected to recover. >> a 24-year-old airman from maryland has been killed in afghanistan. the defendant department says airman first class matthew sider will was one of three killed when an ied hit the vehicle. sider will was from westminster, maryland. he was at peterson air force base in colorado. >> a budget crunch has

lawmakers weighing new tax increases to cover expenses like employee pay raises and public safety funding. the county is facing a $135 million budget hole but "washington examiner" reports some council members have pointed to the energy tax while others suggest property taxes may be a potential revenue source. county executive ike leggett said he doesn't know whether he will recommend pay raises because the county doesn't have the money to spare. >> baltimore's archbishop is being elevated to the college of cardinals. pope benedict xvi made the announcement regarding edwin o'brien. as a cardinal, he will become an advisor to the pope and will be eligible to vote in a papal election until his 80th birthday. o'brien is the fourth arch bishop washington to be named a cardinal. a young, australian woman is lucky to be alive after her bungee cord snapped about 60 feet above a river. if that wasn't bad enough, once she got into the water, the

morning. we're down to 34 degrees. we're going to stay in the 30s this morning but in the low 40s this afternoon. there will be a few sprinkles, maybe a little sleet or flurries mixing in. don't expect any real problems. ground is too warm. a much chillier day than what we had over the weekend. i'll be back in five minutes with a look at the rest of the week. monika samtani has timesaver traffic. >> there is a look at 270. there has been a slow-moving maintenance vehicle at route 109 coming southbound. here at 121, the pace is good. no problems down to the point where the lanes divide. coming up in my next report, we'll go into virginia at 4:47. time for the first your money segment of the morning. >> got the extra? >> good morning, jessica doyle. >> while earnings seasons gets underway, we'll see how much money companies have this week. investors are expecting the slowest earnings growth in three years. now, aluminum giant, alcoa will be the first major company to kick things off this morning. last week, they announced they would close an aluminum smelter

in tennessee and operations at a texas facility in order to cut costs. also this week, we have the leaders of germany, france and italy meeting to discuss europe's debt crisis. on friday, the worries about europe overshadowed solid december unemployment reports. checking the numbers, dow standing this morning at 12,350, lost 55 points in trading on friday. nasdaq meantime was up by about 4.5 points and the s&p 500 was off by over 3. investors cashed out of more than $130 billion in stock mutual funds last year. most of that money exited funds during the summer when investors ran away from the volatile stock market. at the same time, money slowed into mutual funds that invest in the bond market. and federal workers could be getting a raise! the white house is proposing a half a percent pay increase for civilian federal employees in its 2013 budget. if congress approves the measure, it would be the first pay raise for federal workers since the two-year freeze ordered by the president back

4:42. it is 43 degrees. how was it for skiing? >> it was ok. i was up at blue knob. i have a friend who said it was fantastic at wisconsin the slopes. it turns sharply colder by the weekend. it was ok. it was ok. people were golfing as we hit 60s and 70s. if you haven't skied yet, get out there and enjoy it. it will be a couple of months here. let's go. at least a couple of months before we lose that opportunity. bus stop forecast this morning, bundle up. it is chilly. temperatures down in some cases in the 20s. and 30s. slight chance of a sprinkle or even a flurry over the next few hours. but not expecting much more than some very light precip in a couple of spots. sunrise, 7:27. for today, lots of clouds. colder day. temperatures topping out in the low 40s. we'll have a few sprinkles here through the afternoon.

than some cloudy skies. 34 degrees. feeling like 31. with the dew point at 28. and that barometer pretty healthy at 30.34. a look across the country, pretty quiet out west once again. down south, look at texas, new mexico, storm system coming out of western areas of texas. little bit of snow on the back side of that. northeast texas moving into arkansas with scattered showers across the deep south and just a little bit of moisture coming through the midwest and this is why we've got the threat for a few sprinkles or flurries here this morning and even today. but the bulk of the rain looks like it is going to pass off to our south. look at the computer here. this is why i say it is a computer model and not the gospel. it has nothing up here. we saw the echoes. we know there is light precip in ohio and west virginia and kentucky but the heavier stuff that it is detecting is as well south of us. that doesn't mean we won't see a few sprinkles or flurries up here. just the bulk will be south. even through the afternoon, the bulk staying south of town.

charlottesville might see a little bit of the rain/snow mix down toward fredericksburg. you guys have the best chance for seeing some steadier showers than up north of town. and this will all be getting out of here tonight. partial clearing overnight. tomorrow, the sun returns. we get into the 50s. a milder day tomorrow. then as we head into wednesday, look at this next system taking aim at us. not so much early wednesday. by the middle of the day, this will be moving toward us. that's when it looks like some rains will be developing. here is a look at our forecast for the next three days. today, only about 42. i think it is going to be a chilly day. couple of showers, maybe flurries, a little sleet at times. tonight, partial clearing. we'll be down in the low 30s. tomorrow, 53. tuesday, 52 with rain developing by the middle of the day. as we head toward thursday, we may wake up with a few showers. the sun comes back by the afternoon. look at that. colder weekend. highs in the 30s. monika? >> you sound very happy about

that. >> it is january. it is so weird being so warm this weekend. >> you said only half the mountain was open at blue knob. >> yes. >> hopefully that will change over the weekend. for now, mild temperatures. nothing much to worry about out on the roadways. here's what it looks like if you're heading to the south side of town or from the south side of town on the north side of i-95 coming up from the occoquan river all the way up the line. live look in springfield. i'll prove to you what it looks like on the northbound side of 95. northbound 95, not looking bad at all. traffic is moving at a good clip heading up to the beltway or beyond to 395. back over to the map, this time, a little closer into the downtown area. planning to head north on 395 across the 14th street bridge across the pentagon, let's take a live look at the vdot camera, 14th street bridge is looking good all the way into downtown. no problems over the potomac and anacostia river crossings. on the inbound side of i-66, here's what it looks like in newington at the fairfax county

parkway. no worries to vienna and the parkway. more on maryland roadways next time around. back to you guys. >> thanks, monika. 4:48 now. there is more evidence for women being treated for breast cancer. >> recent studies have highlighted the danger of too much alcohol when it comes to risk factors for this disease but as anita brikman tells us, there mate be one type of drink with a different effect. >> i enjoy a glass of red wine. >> women have been told to limit our alcohol intake to lower the risk of breast cancer. a study suggests drinking red wine in moderation may have a protective effect. researchers at cedars-sinai looked at 36 younger women. they drank eight ounces of cabernet sauvignon or chardonnay every day or almost a month and then switched to the other type of wine. they saw a difference in the women's drinking red. >> in the red wine, the hormone levels, the estrogen levels decreased while the testosterone levels increased.

>> dr. shufeld said it is encouraging news because the change in hormone patterns suggest red wine may prevent the growth of cancer cells. now, the new findings challenge much of the current research on alcohol and breast cancer. one study late last year found women had a 15% increased risk of the disease if they drank three to six drinks a week. >> for taste, i actually prefer white wine. >> they didn't see the same protective effects with white wine but that doesn't mean it ups the cancer risk. >> red wine has red grapes, red seed that goes into the process of making it. that's been found to have phyto chemicals. whereas white wine did not change those. >> reporter: anita brikman, 9news now. >> the antioxidant in red wine have been out toed as having a protective effect for the heart. heavy drinking of any type of alcohol cancels out any health benefits. young heart patients may be better off at hospitals that do

more surgeries. hospitals that perform large number of pediatric heart operations are better at solving post-operative problems. some of which can be fatal. doctors say all hospitals need to do a better job at recognizing complications in their earliest stages. >> researchers are getting a better understanding of how a mother's diet can increase the risk of diabetes in her child. doctors at the university of cambridge found that babies that did not get proper nutrition in the womb are less likely to store fats correctly later in life. when fats accumulate in the liver and muscles, the chances of diabetes increases. scientists are increasing with a drug to treat heatstroke. the so-called couch potato pill builds muscle in completely inactive mice. it also stops muscle contractions which contributes to heatstroke. researchers at the baylor school of medicine believe the drug can one day be used to combat heatstroke. >> for students, the process of navigating college, financial

aid opportunities can be daunting. but this weekend, the d.c. council sponsored a college aid workshop at the john wilson building. high school students had a chance to find out what types of financial aid are available and just as important, how to fill out the right forms needed to establish eligibility. there were also chances to meet with financial aid advisors. dozens of people are starting the new year off trying to get on or stay on sound footing financially. they attended a forum with information on how to stave offer for closure. the event was at the jericho center of praise church in landover. maryland congresswoman donna edwards was the host. retirement planning was also a big topic of interest. >> in this country, where every penny really counts, it is really important for us to be good advocates for ourselves, to have the financial tools that we need and to make sure we're meeting our obligations. >> participants also had the opportunity to meet with local lenders to discuss refinancing their homes and home loan

will poppleman. koppelman popped the question over the holidays while they were on vacation in idaho. this will be barrymore's third marriage. >> loretta lynn postponed concerts in ashlyn, kentucky over the weekend to give herself more time to recuperate from knee replacement surgery. shows are pushed back to february and april. the 76-year-old had knee surgery in the fall and also dealt with a bout of pneumonia. the staples center in los angeles made more money from concerts than any other arena in the u.s. the staples center just edged out madison square garden in new york city with almost $61 million in concert ticket sales compared to new york's $58 million. the arena sold more than 633,000 tickets last year. ♪ >> reporter: the top money- making tour act were rourkes u2 and that's today's eye on entertainment. edward lawrence for cbs news,
