some moisture coming in from the west though the heaviest stuff, the steadier stuff looks like it is going to stay south of us. areas down toward fredericksburg, charlottesville, maybe even into southern maryland, south st. mary's county, southern calvert, may get into some steadier showers more so than here in the metro. and areas north. the chill is around. temperatures in the mid-20s, frederick down to gaithersburg. even leesburg at 27. manassas is 28. some low 30s across charles county. but then upper 30s right along the bay at annapolis, the naval academy. however, easton and cambridge back to around the freezing mark with wind chills from the upper 20s to low 30s there. most of the wind chills pretty close to temps. winds are fairly light. let's look at timesaver traffic with monika. pretty quiet start, huh? >> it is a pretty quiet start. i'm surprised for a monday morning. it is usually getting heavier by this time. luckily -- i won't jinx it! things are looking great around town. you can see the beltway on the north side. all of the green. let's show what you it looks

like live on the north side of town. no problems here at university boulevard. on the outer loop, that's left side of your screen. if you're planning to head over to the westbound side of the beltway, you're going to be fine all the way down over to 270. we'll take a look now back at the maps. this time, we'll go down to southern maryland, no problems out of brandywine, route 4, route 5, everything fine up to the beltway right around andrews air force base to oxon hill. a live look at the beltway here at route 4 again as i said on the east side of town, no problems here between college park, route 50 and down into oxon hill. a quick look at the 14th street bridge northbound on 395 heading into the district looks fine as well. coming up, more on virginia roadways at 5:09. today, a montgomery county police officer will receive the congressional bravery award. >> it is for actions during a 2010 hostage situation at discovery communications. 9news now reporter delia gonsalves is live at discovery silver spring headquarters with more on the story. good morning, delia.

>> reporter: good morning, mike, andrea. who could forget that fateful day. i was here covering that day when the streets were just flooded with people. many of them literally frozen with fear when they heard the news that a gunman had rushed into the discovery building. he had explosives attached to his chest. he held people hostage. fortunately, none of those hostages were hurt. thanks in part to this officer. officer edward paden will receive the congressional badge of bravery later this morning. paden was off duty when he ran into the discovery building after hearing the gunman was inside. the 15-year veteran put himself in a position where he literally served as the eyes and ears of s.w.a.t. team officers who later took down that gunman and freed the hostages. now, paden has already been recognized for his actions here in silver spring, that day in april, he received montgomery county police department's medal of valor. that agency's highest honor. coming up in a half hour, we'll

give you more on the history of the 2008 congressional badge of bravery. >> thank you, delia. >> four men have been charged with illegal hunting after one of their friends was accidently shot. the men were hunting saturday in a wooded area off a major road in fort washington. the land is owned by the maryland national capital park and planning commission. maryland natural resources police say 57-year-old roy conte of upper marlboro shot 59-year-old ricky johnson in the abdomen and knee. johnson is recovering. conte is charged with negligent hunting, hunting without written permission and illegal use of buckshot. three others face charges. a fairfax county grandmother is headed to prison for 35 years. a judge sentenced 51-year-old carmella de la rosa friday. a jury found her guilty of killing her 2-year-old granddaughter, anglin ogdoc. she was thrown off a walkway.

de la rosa apologized tearfully at her sentencing hearing. d.c. police are investigating a string of weekend robberies in northwest washington. police are not sure if they're connected. they say the robberies happened within 30 minutes along quarter street, 39th street and warren street. on saturday night, three other robberies all happened within two hours along kennedy street, rock creek church road and newton place. no one has been seriously injured in the attacks but one victim says she was struck by an assailant and another said he was punched. a search and rescue dog has been reunited with his handler. 3-year-old vedo ran off during an open field training exercise in maryland. vee dough is training with urban search and rescue teams. the dog eventually showed up at bowie motor works where the employees looked after him. they did find out who the dog belonged to until they spotted some missing dog flyers on saturday.

trainer sonia said she is now going to get veto microchipped. time for the latest "your money" report of the morning. >> good morning, jessica doyle. how are you? >> i'm doing well, thanks. good morning to both of you. as for wall street, things can get volatile over the next couple of weeks. just be prepared for it. aluminum giant, alcoa will be the first major company to report earnings as the earnings trade kicks off in earnest. investors are expecting the slowest earning growth across the board in three years with less than nice surprises. also this week the leaders of germany, france and italy meet to discuss europe's debt crisis. on friday, worries of europe overshadowed a solid december report. checking the numbers. the dow stands this morning at 12,350 after losing 55 points. but it added 1% for all of last week. the nasdaq inched up 4 points but the s&p 500 was down by 3. it is not your imagination. gas prices did just get pretty expensive in a hurry. the average price of a gallon of gasoline nationwide has

spiked 12 cents over the last three weeks. the lundberg survey puts the price of a gallon of regular at $3.36 a gallon. as the gadget business readies for one of its biggest events of the year, it looks like consumers have been picking up not as much tech. a research firm said u.s. sales of consumer electronics fell 5.9% this past holiday season. it looks like smart phones are cannibalizing sales of gadgets. camcorder sales plunged 43%. sales of digital picture frames fell 38%, for example. the figures were released just as the consumer electronics industry is gathering in las vegas for its annual trade show, the consumer electronics show. it is just that our phone are getting so good at taking the photos, people aren't buying the cameras. >> the digital photographs -- >> the frames. >> i got bored with that after awhile. loading and whatever. >> gps devices have taken a hit, too. >> because everybody has them now. >> or you can do it on your

coffee. we need to get him caffeinated here. thank you very much. we're doing him a favor. we're doing you a favor, as well, trust us on that. let gate you some weather. we have a cold start. make it hot, mike! it is chilly out there. temperatures down in the 20s and 30s this morning. we're not going to get much recovery. low 40s for highs is where we'll get today with a threat for a few showers. here is the bus stop forecast. the gloves, the scarf, the earmuffs. the winds are fairly light. there is a plus there. we do have a threat for a few sprinkles or flurries moving in here over the next few hours. but most temperatures are going to be above freezing when that happens. i'm not anticipating too much in the way of problems. as we head toward the middle of the day, low 40s here. winds this morning, north to northeast. turn east, maybe southeast this afternoon. but those couple of showers or sprinkles or sleet here and there with a 5:00 p.m. temperature of 41 degrees, not a warm day. that's about where we should be. average high is about 43. this weekend was crazy, right?

let's go back for a second. look at the temperatures. upper 20s to around 30 in the shenandoah valley. cold spot, 25 in gaithersburg. although along the border, 22 from york, pennsylvania and upper 30s in southern maryland. this morning, college park, crofton at 30 degrees. col columbia, 28. it is 26 in laytonsville. lovettsville down to 24. manassas is 20 and fort belvoir this morning at 31 degrees. officially, well, first look outside at our michael and son weather camera. beautiful visibility on the u.s. capitol building. got a temperature this morning still at reagan national which is running in the 30s at 35 degrees. my clicker is not behaving at all this morning. we're going to go kick it and get the computer there. you look at the pretty picture. temperatures running in the 30s with very light winds that are coming out of the north and northeast this morning. we've got winds which have been running at about 3 miles per hour. 6 miles per hour right now. dew point is 23 with a wind chill of 30.

you can see all of the moisture down across texas and arkansas, louisiana. that's all moving off toward the east. that's going to come toward us in the form of some mainly rain showers at times today. although looking at west virginia. got some rain and snow showers up there. some of that could be coming across over the next few hours. quick look at the future cast. the budge of the moisture along and south of i-64, some of it creeps up toward southern maryland. by 3:00 this afternoon, maybe even getting up toward oakdale city and woodbridge. we'll see how far north the steadier showers are left. even through the dinner hour, we could be seeing some steadier showers across st. mary's county and parts of the northern neck. here's your forecast. low 40s. showers, maybe a flurry or sleet mixing in. tomorrow, after we start down in the 30s, we'll top out in the 50s. sun returns. we turn wet on wednesday. by thursday, the showers leave early. still mild thursday. much colder friday, saturday and sunday. highs in the 30s.

let's go over to monika samtani. 5:16. she's got a look at timesaver traffic. >> not looking bad out on the roadways at all. i'm happy to say. inside the beltway in virginia on 66, 395 and even over here heading into the district on 295 out of maryland, you will be just fine. traffic is moving at the speed limit. in fact, let's take a look outside live into springfield. right now, you're still moving at a good pace from newington up toward route 644 and the beltway. whether you're headed toward annandale or oxon hill and up into landmark, let's take a look at landmark northbound on 395 here at duke street, volumes are still light in the mid and hov lanes. no problems on the dulles toll road out of leesburg. 66 out of centreville, take a live look outside here as well. sudley road, no problems to report in toward the roosevelt bridge. we'll go to maryland at 5:23. back to you guys. >> different outcomes for the

degrees. the cloudy skies. we'll be 41 by noon. there will be a few showers around, especially south of town. north of town, cold enough where it may mix in with some sleet or a couple of snowflakes there. temperatures above freezing. light precip expected. shouldn't be much of a problem. you see this out in west virginia, southern ohio. some rain and snow coming up on the radars. i checked all of the reporting stations in west virginia. none of the reporting stations are reporting anything. but that doesn't mean it is not reaching the ground, but just doesn't happen to be showing up just yet. mid-30s in washington. when you factor in the winds, not much difference. mid 20s to low 30s on the wind chill. a couple of showers or flurries later. here's monika now at 5:29. >> our floor director said i hope the drivers won't have to punch the clutch. ok. i'll stop. things are looking great all around town. no problems to report on the beltway or any of the interstates headed for the beltway including 95 looking good out of baltimore.

southern primary. >> just wait until january 21st and you'll find out where we're going to get our win. right here. >> reporter: he's already rallying supporters in south carolina. susan mcginnis, cbs news, manchester, new hampshire. it is a day few here will forget. a gunman storming into the discovery channel building holding several people hostage and forcing an emergency evacuation. >> now, an off-duty officer who rushed in to help when others were in danger is being awarded for his bravery. 9news now reporter delia gonsalves is live at discovery channel in silver spring with more about a adoptional badge of bravery for him. good morning, this congressional badge of bravery was created in 2008. it is still very new. it was created for officers who literally put themselves at personal risk for the safety of others. and many say that's exactly what officer paden did here in silver spring back in 2010. the 15-year veteran officer edward paden says he feels very

honored to be recognized in this way. he was off-duty as you had mentioned. ran into the discovery building and was the first officer to identify the gunman and realize that gunman had explosives attached to his body. thanks to the officer's vital information, s.w.a.t. team officers were able to move in and take down the gunman, freeing the hostages that were once inside and of course, reuniting families and putting everyone at ease here in silver spring. now, though the badge was created in 2008, this, in fact, will be the first year that it will be awarded. 20 officers from around the country will receive the badge of bravery including a couple of officers, including a u.s. marshal in fact who was involved in the 2010 vegas courthouse shooting. officer paiden paden from montgomery county is the only maryland recipient. >> good news, delia.

we'll check in with you in a little while. gun sales in virginia surged to a record high last year. fueled in part by shoppers buying more firearms in december than ever before. state police statistics on mained background checks showed there were more than 321,000 gun transactions last year. december was a single month record with nearly 42,000 background checks requested. and that's just the number of background checks. some customers buy more than one firearm at a time. metro says it will inspect more than 450 train cars after a brake part fell off an orange line train. metro says a metal disk called a friction ring fell off the train friday near the stadium armory stop. the train which has 16 friction rings on each car stopped safely. no one was injured and passengers moved to other trains. this problem happened on a series 2,000 car and metro has 454 of those. a metro spokesman says this is not related to a brake problem

on the series 5,000 rail car last month. 5:35. time for another "your money" report. >> jessica doyle is back with the reason for the auto industry to get excited and us, too. >> of course we know about the tough times that the u.s. auto industry has gone through over the last couple of years. the era may be coming to a close. as the north american auto show opens today in detroit. all three u.s. automakers are on track to be profitable in 2011 when they report results in the coming weeks. that's something that hasn't happened since 2004. more good news here, the companies have all agreed to hire thousands of new workers in the coming year as they move some production back to the united states. all of them have also upgraded the cars and trucks they sell. and one of those upgrades will be shown off in detroit this weekend. the redesigned dodge dart. analysts are predicting this car may be the small car hit chrysler needs. the reinvented compact has a

sleek look and it is based on the frame and suspension of an alfaíromeo hatchback from chrysler's italian owner, fiat. no word on prices yet. taxes could be going up in montgomery county. $135 million budget crunch has lawmakers thinking about new tax increases to cover employee pay raises and public safety financing. "the washington examiner" reports some tax hikes being suggested include the county's energy tax or higher property taxes. county executive ike leggett says he doesn't know whether he will recommend pay raises because the county simply doesn't have the money to spare. now, the maryland general assembly reconvenes on wednesday and county officials are asking the state for more money as well. tough situation there, montgomery county. same situation in all of the counties right now. >> you were talking about the auto show. that's a nice-looking car. i notice cadillac is rolling out its first compact. >> no kidding. i didn't see that one yet. >> it is interesting. to look at the cars right now compared to where they were a couple of years ago, even 2004,

it is 5:39. i'm outside on the weather terrace. it is on the cold side. winds are fairly light. our flag is sort of hanging pretty limp this morning. winds less than 5 miles per hour in most spots. temperatures are down in the 20s and 30s. you'll need the gloves, the jacket, maybe a hat, too, with temperatures only climbing into the lower 40s today. you see a little raindrop here and there. there will be a few sprinkles, maybe some flurries and sleet mixed in at times. we'll get warmer tomorrow. i'll have that milder outlook in the next five minutes.

it looks like we've got a little rain and snow in west virginia. not all of this, in fact, probably little is reaching the ground. this is going to come across us over the next few hours. we'll watch. that it is also plenty of moisture from texas off to the carolinas. that generally wants to say south of washington by that much. you'll notice here by 3:00 this afternoon, we've got rain into southern maryland to fredericksburg, charlottesville, might even see a little bit of rain mixing with some sleet or some wet snow across parts of the lower shenandoah valley and even this evening, southern maryland looking at a few showers which may linger through the earl the early part of the night. temperatures today, chilly. low 40s. showers, some flurries possible north. tomorrow, after starting out in the low to mid-30s, we get to the low 50s. rain develops wednesday. by midday, pulls out of here early thursday. then here comes the cold friday, saturday and sunday. good snuggling weather with highs in the mid-30s.

it is 5:55. we're looking at plenty of clouds around here today. with the clouds will come some sprinkles. will come maybe a little sleet and flurry activity as well. temperatures by noon get well above freezing. not warm but well above freezing into the upper 30s to low 40s. anything that falls is going to melt. while you're seeing the computer modeling, having the rains to the south here. look how it creeps up here in the afternoon. i don't think temperatures are going to make much above 41, 42. in spite of the numbers you're seeing here. that could be cold enough for a little sleet or snow to mix in. this stuff will be pulling out after some evening showers. we'll see a much milder day as we head into tuesday's temperatures, rebounding into the 50s. this morning, bundle up. we're starting in the 20s and 30s. mike? >> thank you, howard. so far, 2012 seems to be starting off quite well in the movie theatres. the devil inside shot to first place in its opening weekend. the horror film made twice what industry analysts expected grossing $34.5 million.
