for mitt romney, despite some recent stumbles. but the latest cbs news polls shows the race is closer on a national level. 19% of republican primary voters say they support romney, followed by newt gingrich and rick santorum, but 58% of those asked say they are not satisfied with any of the current candidates. susan mcginnis joins us now from a polling station in manchester, new hampshire, with the latest. good morning, susan. >> reporter: hi. good morning, betty. it's up to new hampshire now. the voting will be under way in just a few hours. across new hampshire, high schools like this one and many other venues statewide. at the stroke of midnight, nine residents cast the first ballot in the nation's first primary. mitt romney, the odds-on favorite in new hampshire tied for first place with former utah governor jon huntsman, each getting two votes. huntsman already seemed like he was in celebration mode at a

packed rally last night. >> ladies and gentlemen, can you feel a little bit of momentum in the air? >> reporter: but romney wants to be the one holding the victory party tonight. >> let's take it to next state and say to new hampshire give me the boost i need, i hope. >> reporter: he's still dealing with the fallout of this comment he made on monday. >> i like being able to fire people who provide services to me. >> reporter: at the thyme was talking about people who change health insurance. they'll be stopping by several polling places to squeeze in last-minute campaigning but it appears some have already conceded the top spot. >> you cannot compete with romney if you are totally positive and he's running $3.5 million. >> second place would be a dream come true. >> reporter: rick santorum is hoping to gain enough momentum to propel him to south carolina. last night a crowd of angry protesters shouted to him as he left an event.

ron paul could barely make it through a rush of cameras as he tried to greet voters. and jon huntsman took a hit. he apparently does not qualify for arizona's primary that's coming up next month. he apparently filed all the paperwork by the deadline yesterday, but it does not have his notarized signature on it. so atz of now he doesn't qualify. betty, his campaign is going to challenge that ruling. >> thank you, susan. we do appreciate it. we also asked voters regardless of their affiliation how the president is doing. 45% approve of the way president obama is doing his job, not much different from last month. but just 38% are happy with how he is handling the economy. the president is trying to link the republican presidential candidates with those in congress. he spoke with futhose at a fund-raiser. he said, quote, the very focus of what this country stands for is on the line. >> this election may be harder

than the last one, but i promise you, we will finish what we started in 2008. we're going to keep on, we will press forward, we will remind the world once more why the united states of america is the greatest nation on earth. >> earlier mr. obama unexpectedly announced a staff shake-up. chief daley is stepping down after one year. budget director jack lew becomes the president's third chief of staff. now to rough weather. more rain is expected today in southeast texas following powerful thunderstorms. by early yesterday, more than 4 inches of rain had fallen in the houston area. roads flooded, and thousands lost power. there are unconfirmed reports that a tornado actually touched down south of houston. in alaska, the trouble is snow, a lot of it. the fishing village of cordova, located on alaska's southeast coast, is all but buried by more

than 10 feet of snow, and more is expected today. roofs collapsed, and some residents are trapped inside their homes. the national guard has been called in to help. to the northwest now, the city of nome has its own problems. it's iced in and facing a fuel shortage. a russian fuel tanker is following a coast guard ice breaker through three-foot ice in the bering sea to deliver fuel, but it's still unclear when they're going to arrive. on the "cbs money watch," a new sign that the economy may be recovering and gadgets galore in las vegas. ashley is here with that and more. good morning. >> good morning. tokyo's nikkei inched up nearly half a percent while hong kong's hang sang also finished higher, more than half a percent. it was a positive day on wall street. dow jones added 33 points while

the nasdaq also finished on the plus side. it's a sign that some people are feeling confident about the future of the economy. according to the federal reserve, consumer debt rose by more than $20 million in november. that's the largest amount it gained in nearly a decade. the increase in borrowing is due largely to credit card spending and a jump in car loans. a group of farmers is sued failed financial firm mf global. they target the company's ceo jon corzine. mf global filed for bankruptcy last year after more than a billion dollars went missing from client accounts. much of that wentz to farmers and ranchers. the supreme court will be hearing arguments over tvs and broadcasts against the fcc. it gives the authority to regulate the industry and issue fines based on context that airs in prime time. and get ready for the

it looked bad overnight, but firefighters with helicopter support say they're making good progress this morning against a wildfire in ran chose palos verdes, california, south of last. . the fire scorched at least 15 acres in a brushy canyon, but firefighters say nearby homes are in the clear. wisconsin police reportedly have identified a body found in an icy river as the son of a green bay packers assistant coach. 21-year-old michael philbin went missing sunday. he's the son of offensish coordinator. team members say it was the body of philbin. police say no foul play was expected.

assad is giving his first public speech since the plan to crack down on anti-government protesters. this is a live look at the speech from syrian tv. they said assad will discuss domestic issues despite allowing leaders into the country. the military has continued to kill anti-government protesters. in poland a shocking incident caught on camera and on microphone. a warning. this video may be disturbing. it happened at a news conference in warsaw yesterday. a polish military prosecutor told reporters he objected to planned reforms at his office. and then at the end of the session, walked out of the camera frame and -- [ gunfire ] -- he shot himself in the head, but he did not die. he's hospitalized in stable condition. now, his motive? well, that's still a mystery at this hour.

disturbing though. a young muslim immigrant is being held without bail in tampa, florida, on federal terrorism charges. prosecutors describe him as a lone wolf who planned revengeful attacks on various sites in the tampa area. tara mergener has more from washington. >> reporter: this american citizen is charged with planning terror attacks. 25-year-old sammy who was born in yugoslavia is believed to have created the plan. according to court documents the suspect was ready to bomb targets that include bridges and popular nightclubs in the tampa area. he also reportedly planned to air explosives into a crowded area and take hostages. a confidential source put them in touch with an undercover fba agent. he tried to buy an ak-47, uzi gun, grenades and an explosive

belt. >> this individual wanted armaments and weaponry in order to create mayhem. >> reporter: law enforcement agents arrested him saturday after he bought these firearms and explosives from an fbi agent. >> there was no real danger to the kmooumt once e got involved because we knew we could handle the situation. >> reporter: they say it doesn't appear that he's tied to terror groups. federal terrorist charges have also been filed in maryland against a former u.s. soldier arrested in kenya. craig baxam emerged from court yesterday in green belt, maryland, with a coat over his head. he's accused of trying to join an islamist group in somalia. he could face 15 years in convicted. straight ahead, your tuesday morning weather. and in sports, roll tide. a super dome shocker in the bcs championship game. alabama kicker jeremy shelley did most of the scoring, and the bam ma defense held lsu to just 292 yards of total offense. the tides scored the games only touchdown, 34-yard run with 4:30 left. the final score, 21-0. the first shutdown in the 14 year hicht of the gts. he threw for 234 yards. he gave the head coach nick saban much of the credit. >> i'm just thankful the coach gave me the opportunity to come out and, you know, put the ball in my hands and let me make some plays. >> the character, the attitude, the resiliency of this group, the work and the commitment and the buy-in was what made this team different. >> it's the second bcs championship in three years for saban at alabama. now to golf and a win for

steve string ner the season's pga opener. final round at the tourment of championships in hawaii, he nailed his approach shot on 16 and putted for a birdie, then capped the victory with another birdie putt on 18 finished under 269 and hugs from his biggest fan. well, barry lar kin knows where he'll be on july 22nd, cooperstown, new york, to be inducted into baseball's hall of fame. the sure-handed cincinnati reds shortstop was elected in his third year of eligibility. he got 86% of the vote from baseball writers of america. in 18 seasons, lar kin was a 12-time all-star hitting .295 with 198 home runs. and when we return, another look at this morning's top stories, and a pill mix jum triggers a recall of some of the popular over the counter drugs. wake up!

powerful prescription drugs and common over-the-counter medicines. the warning follows recall of several common drugs. >> reporter: novartis is pulling bottles of exsaid driven off store shelves. it also includes bufferin, gas ex-and the caffeine caplets nodoz. it may contain stray tablets from other novartis products. >> first of all, you need to definitely be concerned about side effects if the drugs were mixed. some of the drugs that could have been mixed cause a lot more drouziness than your exsaid rinne and bufferin. >> reporter: the recall occurred at a major manufacturing facility in nebraska which was shut down after fda inspectors found problems there. novartis decided to pull the products after receiving complaints of miss labeled bottles and broken and chipped pills. the bottles are exsaid driven

and nodoz that expire before 2014 and buff rip and gas ex-that expire before 2013. novartis says if you have the recalled product, don't use it and contact the company for a refund. some of the over the counter pills may have been packed with powerful prescription painkiller. they sell the drugs as percocet, endocet and others. they're not recalling those painkillers because the risk is low and so many rely on those medications. >> they don't want to create any kind of irrational fear. >> reporter: experts say look at your medications closely and if you have any questions, contact your pharmacist. cbs news, new york. listen to this. a little girl had a face-off with a scary lion and it was all caught on tape. the 3-year-old was admiringing the lion last week at a new zealand zoo but the lion had something else on his mind. he pounced.
