considered a major announcement on funding. >> hollywood coming to washington tonight. angelina jolie will show off her new film at the holocaust museum. it's called the land of blood and honey. all of the polls suggest mitt romney will win in new hampshire in a runaway. so the big question is who will come in second. >> we've been taking a look at the activity coming out of new hampshire all morning, and it has been abuzz in that state. we have a live picture of one of the polls places in new hampshire. as you can see, a lot of folks have just streamed into the door. so about 6:00 in new hampshire, the doors opened, and it is quite a packed house at this point. mitt romney is expected to kind of run away with this race. so it will likely spell the end

for many candidates, but some are still hoping to stay alive, specifically we're talking ron paul and john huntsman, who are hoping to stay alive and fighting for that second spot in the race. about 6 hours ago, republicans in the small ton of dicksville notch cast very votes. with three votes for obama, and two each for romney and huntsman. >> this is a classic new hampshire primary, in that the people, i think, deliberately make it impossible for the pollsters to fir out what is going on. >> in the end, if you're bow going to beat barack oh may --

to help raise money for his party. the president spoke at a fund- raiser here in washington last night. he listened the republican presidential candidates to the gop on capitol hill. it's the first time he linked the two. analysts see it as a sign of the white house's reflection strategy. >> this morning d.c. police are looking for a gunman who shot and killed a man over a pair of $200 sneakers. 19-year-old david lee robinson died in a gun foot early sunday. investigators believe the robbers and the victim and his friend were all armed because of the number of shell casings left at the scene. robinson leaves behind a pregnant girlfriend.

soldiers. budget director jack loo will be president obama's new chief of staff. the president called him the cheer choice to replace william daley. daley is stepping down after one year on the job. >> there will be more rain in houston today but nothing quite like monday. rain flooded the major highways around the city. some parts of houston got up to seven inches of rain. mike? >> thanks, jess. the state department is working on a case of a former marine given a death sentence in iran. he's accused of being a spy there. it is the latest incident of rising tensions between our two countries. now for a closer look, we're joined by jamal abbey with the national iranian national council and we were just talking, do you think this is a chess match or is this a serious instance where we do someone who is an american who was caught as a spy there? >> this is a culmination of a series of at this time for at that times between -- of tits for tats to limit iran's

ability to export oil. and iran is responding in kind. they're sort of upping the ante. they took this young american iranian american and charged him with a crime of being a spy. and you know, there are numerous irregularities in the case. really, i think what this amounts to is just another case of political one upsmanship. sort of a dangerous escalation that could result in some very bad outcomes for both sides. >> aside from as we were talking, shutting off the strait of hormuz where a lot of the world's oil goes through, the sanctions, retaliation of some of the sanctions, you were saying they're pretty widespread. >> president obama a couple of weekends ago signed into law the most all encompassing sanctions we've seen to date. these are sanctions against iran's central bank. they make it illegal for any company to do business with iran. this is tied to iran's nuclear

program. the efforts by the united states and its allies to get iran to suspend its enrichment program. iran says our program is purely for peaceful purposes. we want to create energy. the west says you need to come cleaned actually open up your program so that we know that's the case. and then meanwhile, on the western side, iran says the sanctions are for regime change purposes. so, a lot of talking past one another. >> this is not the first time we've had tensions with this country. where do we go from here? is this an impasse? is this the most serious -- you know -- >> the danger is that this spills over into a conflict, a military conflict. that's a real concern of military leaders, a concern of pavilion leaders. way out of this is through actually having talks. and that's the problem. we have this escalation, confrontation of actions there haven't been any words exchanged. so, unless we can get to the negotiation table, there is a chance this is going to become an all-out military conflict. there are negotiations

>> ok. >> well, as soon as the results are announced tonight in new hampshire, most of the candidates will take off and head south. the primaries and caucuses are about to start coming at a pretty rapid clip. >> delia gonsalves joins us now with the studio with a look at what lies ahead. busy day in new hampshire. >> super busy. we already saw some folks are heading to the polls and casting their ballots. really busy day. folks can't really celebrate for too long. they have to move on to the next race. so, certainly, eyes are forging ahead to south carolina. that is just 11 days away. will likely spell the end of the road for many candidates. folks are really spending their energies on the next race. in fact, we've already seen rick perry working the crowds in south carolina. he skipped new hampshire entirely. an interesting tactic. he's spending time in that conservative southern state, a focus there will likely be the unemployment rate which is among the highest in the nation at 10%. the recent polls and you can take a look at the numbers there, 30% from romney.

show mitt romney leading in south carolina, the highly conservative state, of course, it is heavily influenced by the tea party movement which believes romney is too moderate of a candidate. a win there is huge for him. could be huge and really pave the road for a november match- up with president barack obama. >> so, obviously south carolina make-or-break time for a lot of candidates. what comes after that? what's the next big contest? >> you had mentioned it is a tight schedule that they have. very little sleep. lots of coffee. they're heading to the next one and the next one obviously is florida. the latest numbers there show that romney is doing well in florida, too. so, it will be an interesting match-up. but florida is the next race, let's take a look at the calendar. and that busy schedule that lies ahead. the primary there in florida, january 31st followed by maine and neve dad with caucuses both held saturday, february 4th. then three days later, you have colorado, minnesota, and a primary in missouri as well.

we can really fast forward, super tuesday, march 6th. 11 states holding contests including virginia, massachusetts and ohio. >> now, to refrain from republicans throughout the campaign, it is who can beat president obama. who will do well in the general election. what are the results when people are polled about that? >> when santorum was interviewed last night in new hampshire, he said it is all about electability. who can take the voters, who, four years ago voted for president barack obama. a lot of the independent votes. so, they're really pushing for that in new hampshire. so, it is interesting. this is just kind of a hypothetical. as we were to push forward to november, who would win the race. so far, the cbs poll says that mitt romney is likely to beat president barack obama. you can take a look at the numbers there. the percentage points, 2 percentage points. 47 for mitt romney. 45 for barack obama followed of course by ron paul and rick santorum. the rest of the candidates really are closely matched with about 41%, 42%.

interesting to note this cbs poll was taken right after his win in iowa. which was huge. he just narrowly beat out rick santorum in iowa. we'll see how the numbers match up. >> it is early. that 45% to 47% is within the margin of error. >> absolutely. >> we could end up with another 2,000 here. >> it will be a long night. >> i had a lot of fun that night. it was hard for a lot of people to stomach. but it was cool. >> thank you, delia. >> we have a commuter alert. metro riders, get ready to pay more for your commute. "the washington post" reports thursday metro bosses will propose a 5% hike to fares on both metrorail and metrobus. metro would do away with the peak of the peak surcharge during rush hour and it would put a flat fee in place for commuters who think paper fare cards, $6 in rush hour, $4 in off-peak times. that would hit tourists the hardest. parking rates would go up as

well. any changes would take effect this summer. there is some good news for metro. work is 60% done on the new silver line. phase one will go from east falls church through tysons corner to wheelie avenue in reston. track is being laid in some sections. this extension is slated to open by late next year. the former army officer accused of trying to help a terrorist group in somalia, federal documents say 24-year- old charles bax trim traveled to sox alia to join an islamic group. baxtrim became a muslim while he was serving in korea. the former army intelligence officer could get 15 years in prison if convicted. well, there is growing concern over a rat problem at the two occupy d.c. encampments. city health authorities say unsanitary conditions at mcpherson square are breeding grounds for disease and for rats. there are also some concerns that protestors could develop

hypothermia because of the weather. right now, there is no immediate plan, however, to evict protestors for health reasons. jess? >> thank you, mike. the time right now, 6:37. i am watching your money. more of us are using our money in electronic forms instead of paper. social security recipients who start getting benefits this year will have to get them through direct deposit. all paper checks will be phased out by 2013. the move will save the government $108 million a year. if you want a u.s. savings bond, you can only buy them online. no more buying them at the bank. the treasury department says that move will save $120 million over the next five years. you can save money this weekend when you go to a national park. all 397 of them will be free this upcoming weekend for the martin luther king jr. holiday. that includes great falls and fredericksburg military park and shenandoah national park. some will also host special

events. the big annual detroit auto show doesn't open to the public until this weekend. but the big awards for cars of the year are already out. the hyundai elantra was named the 2012 north american car of the year. while the range rover was named 2012 north american truck of the year. it is a big honor for both vehicles. transportation secretary ray lahood was in detroit and says this year's auto show has a different feeling than just a few years ago. >> when i was there at this show three years ago, this place was like a funeral home. today, it is like a wedding celebration. >> the auto show hosts industry days today and tomorrow. that's usually when carmakers show off their new vehicles for the upcoming year. >> just about 6:40. there are some slick areas out there on the roads this morning so be careful. of course, nothing like the karma geddon we had nearly a year ago. monika takes us inside a new command center which is trying

combined its public safety agencies all into one building. in this extra mile report, i'm taking you inside this massive facility in fairfax. >> reporter: it is difficult to forget the wrath of mother nature in washington in 2011. with snowmageddon, carmageddon, flooding and an earthquake in one year. nobody wants a repeat of the frustration that caused again. having learned from that experience, the state of virginia has integrated public safety departments at mp stock, a county and state partnership enhancing communications all under one roof. so, how did the agencies now housed there work together if we have to deal with lots of snow this winter? >> we have 911, police and fire down here. we have vdot and state police all working together on this floor. emergency management overseas emergency operations center right across the hall over here. so, there is a big event, everybody is here together. we link up very easily. >> as a result of last january's snowstorm that

paralyzed the region leaving traffic at a stand still for hours. this year, the office of emergency management is rolling out a new campaign asking residents to stay where they are. >> federal, state and local, we've all decided that what we're going to push this year is get to where you need to go before the storm hits. and be prepared to stay there until the streets are clear. stay off the roads is what we're asking you to do. >> the campaign this winter is snow. stay off the roads, not out in the weather. >> snowmageddon, depending on you know, the weather that we're going to have, here this winter, we can activate the snowstorms, generally, we know when those snowstorms are coming so we can plan for them and we can get staff in before the storm hits. and we can work those incidents then. >> the general manager told me that unfortunately, 9-11 was a big impetus to put all of the agencies together. so, if weather comes in, they have the 3:30 a.m. conference calls and they make
