loss. all be dizzy. the hard results here tonight at 11:00. all that spin tomorrow on 9news now at 6:00. >> the real stuff tonight, gary, thank you. the president won without opposition. and while all eyes are on the republicans in the granite state, the president's campaign doesn't want voters to forget. they are picking his opponent come november. the obama campaign bought a large ad on the new hampshire union leaders website. it is a series of mentions on the main newspaper site, paid for by obama. >> a new poll is giving us a better sense of how the race would shape up if the election were held right now. in a survey of more than a thousand adults, 30% of republicans asked, say they would vote for mitt romney. newt gingrich comes in second with 20% of the vote. down from 28 in december. and in a matchup, romney would get 43% to the president's 48%. that poll has a margin of error of 3 percentage points.

>> the american civil liberties union is throwing his support behind four republican presidential candidates who are trying to get on the primary ballot in virginia. rick perry filed a suit last month after failing to collect the 10,000 signatures he needs to qualify for the march 6 commonwealth. gingrich and rick zap santorum joined the lawsuit. >> next tuesday, the district's board of elections will hold a special meeting to certify the city council seat is vacant. former councilman, harry thomas resigned as part of a plea agreement in an embezzlement scheme. the board certification clears the way for a special election on may 15. prince georges county prosecutors are waiting in the wings to charge the notorious mother, daughter killer, even though today federal prosecutors sent him away for a century. >> i'm scott broom outside the federal courthouse in green belt, maryland, where the man

who remains accused of the mother, daughter killer received a 100 year federal sentence for other crimes. >> 28-year-old jason scott responsible for nearly 60 violent home invasions, burglaries, and more in prince georges county between 2007 and 2009. >> he was a one man crime wave. he referred to him as not just a crime wave, but a tsunami of crime. >> how scott operated like a terrorist from a hollywood movie with no fear. surprising victims if their own homes. used his job to identify victims. >> there are lots of things that i just don't do. >> after this 100 year federal sentence, poised to take a second crack at scott. this time for the murders of delores, whose burned bodies were found in their car after a home invasion. just a few blocks from scott's home. scott broom, 9news now. >> and there was an arrest

today next two recent attempted robberies in bethesda. montgomery county police say that could lead to closing more than 10 other cases in the county. investigators say the unidentified suspect was confronted by two homeowners when he tried to rob their homes. in word yet if he is related to the 40 other burglaries in the county that have gone down since november. it's never right to steal, but stealing from a house of worship seems worse. burglars have hit three churches and police have no suspects. lindsey mastis has the story that is new at 6:00. >> church members are cleaning up what burglars destroyed. >> is this a senseless act. >> they came through the window and kicked down a door at united methodist church just this morning. >> drawers were open. drawers had contents spilled out on the floor. >> pastor mark miller says they stole a safe. >> inside the safe were hundreds of these gift cards worth thousands of dollars. they were supposed to help the church and people in the

community. >> we give gift cards to people in need and then we also sell gift cards to our church members and part of the proceeds of the sale then go to our building fund. >> the burglars hit up two other churches in the area, stealing flat screen tv's, and cash. >> really takes a different kind of individual to steal from a church. >> police have no suspects, nor a description of the person or people responsible. but what about -- >> our christian faith teaches that everyone stands accountable for their decisions and choices. god certainly forgives. >> the criminals could face years of jail time. in stafford, virginia, i'm lindsey mastis, 9news now. >> right now, police are checking to see if any of those stolen gift cards can be traced. they don't know if any of the criminals attended the churches that they stole from. >> the metro line leading to one of the district's poorest

neighborhoods is enjoying the highest economic development in the region. that's the finding in a new report due out thursday. the capital river front business improvement district commissioned the study to track changes along the green line between georgia avenue, and the navy yard ballpark station. all right metro riders, prepare to pay more to commute. metro's general manager will introduce a plan to overcome a budget short fall of $116 million. and that proposal includes a 5% fare hike for metro rail and metro bus riders and also a parking rate increase. the biggest change would be for riders who use paper fare cards. those passengers would pay a one way flat fare of $6 during rush hour. $4 during offpeek. >> i think there's going to be a big hit on tourists and the infrequent users of the metro. >> i wouldn't necessarily paying more if extra calls can
