they are tough to watch. you brace on impact yourself just watching them. >> you do. great work. we are glad this is coming out. back to you guys. derek. >> our weather roller coaster this winter took a turn for the dreary today. topper is in the weather center tracking some falling temperatures heading our way. what is that rain situation? >> heavier rain is rolling in tonight. the evening commute is going to get worse. in fact, let's start with live doppler 9,000. heavy activity down to the south. see little flecks of yellow down there? overall pattern of rain. the lighter green from essentially 56 north up toward leesburg and 270, it is light activity at this time. but as we go through the evening, it will become gradually heavier. temperatures generally in the 40s. 39 up in frederick. one of the exceptions in the immediate metro area. we have 30s out in the mountains. 33 in manassas and 46 downtown. quite frankly, temperatures aren't going to go anywhere.

they may go up a little bit. mild with heavy rain, tapering off to showers after midnight. winds will become southwesterly. we'll come back and talk about whether or not we can salvage a decent thursday and talk about when the arctic air comes in. that and more. >> thank you top. montgomery county police are on a desperate hunt for a man who attacked two women in two days. >> he invaded a house in bethesda, tieing up the family and sexually assaulting the housekeeper. on tuesday, he attacked another woman. bruce leshan brings us the story from bethesda. >> investigators dusting for prints and searching the bushes for a discarded cell phone. in a bizarre attack in one of the region's safest neighborhoods, police now desperately want to talk to this man. they say after sexually assaulting the housekeeper, he stole her bank card and used it at a cvs, atm in dc.

and they say the same man used another woman's atm card at a bank in oxen hill after attacking her in wheaten. neighbors in bethesda terrified. >> i don't know how someone can recover their trust after something like this. very scary for all of us to know that we're not safe. >> the brazenness of the attacks shocking. after threatening the housekeeper with the black handgun, police say he took her back inside and tied her up along with the mom and the teenage son who were also inside the home. and he spent a very long time rummaging through the home and sexually assaulting the housekeeper. >> the housekeeper got there at 6:45. we got our first call at 7:00 7:30. >> police say physically, she should be okay. the mother and the teenage son remained inside the home while police investigated and friends

arrived to try and help. >> how are you doing? are you freaked out? >> any indication that maybe the suspects knew the home or knew the housekeeper? anyone inside? >> they are very quiet neighbors. they live across the street and i think everyone is really shocked that this could happen to them. >> freak you out? >> yes. it's a very peaceful, quiet neighborhood and it's really unusual. >> police say that the attacker took the housekeeper's keys and her car, which was parked right back here in the driveway. it is a gray, 2005 ford expedition with maryland license tags 4ae4750. now if you see the suv or you recognize the picture of this man, please call crime solvers or montgomery county police. there is a $1,000 reward for

this case and of course the case here in bethesda and the case in wheaten as well. lesli. >> a truly terrifying ordeal. thank you for that. anita. >> from transportation to education, the virginia general assembly is facing a slew of issues this session and today, lawmakers started to get down to business. peggy fox is live in richmond. peggy, who is on the agenda? >> well, the big story today was a fight over control of the senate. the senate is split 20 democrats, 20 republicans. so the democrats put forth a proposal today to share power. it was voted upon 20-20 and republican lieutenant governor broke the tie to feeding the proposal. essentially giving control of the senate to republicans. it means lieutenant governor will be able to break those ties in everything except for budget and spending bills. budget and spending are the focus of the session. >> virginia general assembly

kicked off its 2012 session. >> the house of delegates is now in session. >> for high hopes of legislation supported by republicans. for only the second time since the civil war, republicans control both the general assembly and the governor's mansion. that change in balance could hurt northern virginia, especially in education funding. >> the governor is trying to siphon off $100 million a year and use it to pave roads. those of us across virginia who care about education have a real problem with that. >> unfortunately, the government made some cuts to education. one thing i'm looking to do is get some funding back in. >> even springfield republican, dave albo is critical of the governor's plan to remove funds northern virginia schools use to pay teachers a competitive wage. >> it costs more to live in fairfax county, so they want to cut out the cost to compete. which of course we have to fight tooth and nail. >> fairfax republican supports

the governor's proposal on transportation and education. >> we are putting more money in k through 12. >> the governor is expected to make a secondary proposal on transportation funding. and concerning phase 2 of the dulles rail project, republicans are taking aim at its builder and the project labor agreement. >> if we are going to send that money, there should be no project labor agreement. there should be transparency to where the press can look in and see exactly how they are spending the money. >> now the senator who is known for his conservative ideals. basically says life begins at conception. democrats say that it would criminalize birth control pills. it is the topic we'll likely hear more about in this session. i'm peggy fox. back to you. >> thank you for giving us a rundown. >> also set to take up hotly debated issues.

they include a measure to legalize same sex marriage and a move to expand slot machine gambling. governor o'malley said the key item is jobs. he is surprised observers by voting an increase as well as the gas tax. o'malley says raising taxes from 6% to 7% would help address maryland's budget short fall. but state senate president, mike miller, called the idea a nonstarter. we will have a live report on maryland session coming up at 6:00. >> d.c. mayor came out swinging against a recall effort saying he has had an excellent record as mayor. political activist has initiated recall proceedings against the mayor and council chairman saying they betrayed the public trust. bruce johnson is here with the mayor's response. >> some of the people behind the recall are behind the campaign. but having said that, the campaigns for mayor and kwame brown are both the focus of federal investigations. both men say they have done

nothing wrong. >> d.c. mayor vincent gray today dismissed the recall as the work of people who supported adrian fenty. >> i saw a comment, which was in the media. i assumed it was accurate. i hadn't done the job. i'll take that on with anybody. i feel we have done an excellent job with many of the issues in the district of columbia. you know, look at education. >> the first press conference since he resigned. then admitted to filling more than $350,000 earmarked for youth programs. some feel the mayor and others close to thomas while supporting the investigation never expressed outrage at his crimes and coverup. >> how do you feel about what harry thomas -- >> i think it was a reprehensible act and it should be punished in the way that these acts are punished through our laws. that would include prison time. >> harry thomas will be sentenced on may 3. a special

election to replace him is may 15. the mayor says that he is asking city officials to look into whether or not harry thomas owes the city money for not paying taxes. >> there's the second installment of $50 ,000 that hasn't paid yet. >> he agreed to pay back $300,000. the first installment, he doesn't have the second $50,000. >> a lot of unanswered questions tonight. >> he owes a lot of money. >> thank you for that. derek. time is running out if you want to pay off your old d.c. parking tickets without those dreaded extra penalties. that's the message from mayor gray. the amnesty ticket program ends january 27 and all your open parking tickets, your moving violations and photo enforced citations issued before january 1 of last year will still qualify under the program. >> this applies to tickets that are involved with traffic

violations, parking violations. so those who owe taxes, you still owe taxes. there is no amnesty program. >> okay then. the department of motor vehicle says most of the revenue d.c. collected comes from drivers in the state of maryland. it comes to $2 million. >> u.s. park police confirm that a report of a father who left his 13 month old baby alone at the occupy d.c. protests at the mcpherson square is true. that father faces child cruelty charges tonight. investigators say the little girl was found alone in a tent this morning. they say she had been there for half an hour. the child is now in the custody of social services. protesters in d.c. and all over the world staged protests today to mark the 10th anniversary of the opening of the u.s. military detention camp. some of those protesters in downtown washington wore orange jump suits and black hoods representing the men who are

still detained. the united states set up the prison after the invasion of afghanistan. the first 20 prisoners arrived at guantanamo bay january 11, 2002. amnesty international and other groups organized today's demonstration. >> a laurel man accused of trying to join a terrorist group will remain in custody. that was the ruling this afternoon at a detention hearing for craig. he was arrested on friday. prosecutors say he left the united states for somalia trying to join the terrorist group. the 24-year-old laurel man could get up to 15 years behind bars if he's convicted. the man linked to the disappearance of natalie holloway entered a guilty plea in a different murder case. van der sloot pleaded guilty to killing a 21-year-old peru woman. she was killed five years to the day that natalie holloway disappeared. prosecutors are asking for a

30 year prison sentence. still ahead, the first lady sits down with gayle king, responding to allegations made about her in a new book. >> if you're looking for a job, you might want to consider target. they have a new store opening here in crofton, maryland. and they have more than 200 positions to fill. i'm lindsey mastis. that story is coming up. republican presidential candidates begin their showdown in south carolina. i'm randall pinkston in columbia. i'll have that story.

despite the rather obvious risks, the u.s. military is being ranked the top employer for young people. that's according to a study by branding. that study examines people age 18 to 29. among the other top employers for that same age group, wal- mart, starbucks, and target. the study looked at millions of facebook profiles taken by an online job networking site. the subject was jobs today at the white house, along with insourcing instead of outsourcing. president obama invited representatives to the white house for a forum. those companies made a commitment to return jobs from overseas or increase their investments in the united states. >> right now, we're at a

republican voters to hold romney back to give their campaigns a chance to continue. >> newt gingrich is back at work campaigning in south carolina. after finishing fourth in the new hampshire primary, the former house speaker is looking ahead. >> we will consolidate conservatives across south carolina and as we do that, we will win the south carolina primary and that will set the stage for a very exciting florida. >> gingrich is courting conservatives through campaign ads and e-mail. he and other gop candidates are spending millions to slow mitt romney. romney left new hampshire this morning a winner. the support of conservatives here, evangelicals, independents, we were winning among all those groups. if i can duplicate that, i can become the nominee. >> romney is ahead in the polls, but south carolina is a different state. >> rick santorum are hoping to play to the conservative base. perry skipped new hampshire, coming to south carolina early,

hoping to jump start some momentum in the state that has a history of picking winners. >> you win in south carolina and traditionally, you are the republican nominee. >> a republican political consultant who worked on the 2008 campaign. he says south carolina republicans thought romney was too liberal then. today, their priorities are different. >> this time around, we want to see someone that can beat barack obama. you don't have to be the most conservative, but you have to be conservative. >> for perry and the other candidates. the stakes in south carolina are high. and for all of the candidates, they are facing their biggest challenge yet in terms of voters. in iowa, there were 122,000 voters in the republican primary. in new hampshire, 247,000. here in south carolina on the 21st, they expect more than 400,000 people to be voting. reporting live in columbia, i'm randall, back to you. >> won't be long before they

radar combined. the slug of moisture, heavy rain around charlottesville. kind of inbetween charlotteville and fredericksburg and that will roll in here tonight and lay down most of the rain from the system. live doppler 9,000. light rain and notice a darker green showing up south of town. also notice some yellows, kind of mixed in. we have rains toward shan chantilly. and lust lusbee. temperatures in the 40s and they aren't going to go anywhere. if they go anywhere, it's going to go up. 46 downtown. 42 in great falls. 43 in reston and 43 out toward beltsville. so here's the deal. heavy rain tonight. evening commute a miss. heavy rain through midnight. a.m. and p.m. showers on thursday. but a much milder thursday. in fact, a pretty nice day tomorrow. you take away the showers in

the morning and the evening. nice day. i want to show you temperatures across the states. look how warm it is from chicago eastward. it's 50 in chicago. but it's 11 in bismarck. 18 in denver. and this is just sort of an idea of what is heading our way as we get into friday and also the weekend. future cast, 11:00 tonight, there's the heavy rain pushing through. so between now, 1:00, midnight. that's when the heavy rain will be rolling through. after that, the good news is it rolls through quickly. we'll see breaks in the clouds as early as 6:00, 7:00 tomorrow morning. the clouds return in the evening with showers and then as the moisture lingers and the cold air comes in, some of these showers could actually turn to snow showers. we'll keep you posted on that as the arctic air moves in. next seven days. 58 tomorrow. almost 60. some spots will flirt with 60 tomorrow and snow showers or flurries possible on friday. notice the high on friday matches the low on thursday. temperatures don't go anywhere. they may go down. then we're looking at a cold

a new book about the white house is putting a lot of attention on first lady, michelle obama. and this week she sat down with gayle king to respond one on one. >> now it's my understanding that you have not read the book. >> i never read these books. they are so many books that have my picture on the cover. my name on it and i don't know what's going on. so i have gotten in the habit of not reading other people's impressions of people. >> if reading the book and you take out parts of the book, you would think michelle obama is angry. she's unhappy. she feels burdened. she feels frustrated. do you feel frustrated as first lady of the united states? >> i love this job.

it has been a privilege from day one. there are challenges with being a mother and trying to keep your kids sane and i worry a lot about that. i mean, if there's any anxiety that i feel, it's because i want to make sure that my girls come out of this on the other end whole. but me, barack, we are grownups. all the ups and downs, we take it on. you know, i guess it's more interesting to imagine this conflicted situation here and a strong woman and you know, but that's been an image that people have tried to paint of me since the day barack announced that i'm some angry black woman. >> how do you feel about that image? >> i try to be me and my hope is that over time, people get to know me. and they get to judge me for me. >> mrs. obama says she enjoys her roll as first lady, she

for three days, they have been filling out forms, waiting in line, and making their best pitch to get hired. target is holding a job fair to fill more than 200 positions. >> as lindsey mastis shows us, they are looking for people with a host of different skills to work at the company's new store in crofton. >> inside each target store are cashiers, managers, and people that stock the shelves. every single one of these divisions is open. >> it will take us six weeks to fill the store. >> they'll have to hire 225 people almost immediately. and they are looking for a specific type of person. >> dynamic energy, enjoyment of being with the public. >> robert has been in the towing industry for 30 years, but work has been slowing down. >> i thought i would go ahead and go for a career change. >> he's applying for one of 50

the russian agency are going to see where parts of a probe will land this weekend. between saturday and monday. right now, they are projecting it will hit some place in the indian ocean, they won't know until we get closer. a southern maryland state park remains shut down after the discovery of more world war ii military explosives. they were found at newtown next state park. last week, more than 18 pieces of military ordinances were found. the u.s. army corps of engineers is investigating. an update on plans for a new development in prince william county. we told you last night at the oaks 3 project. the plans for an office building and a home at tanyard hill. caused a major outcry. the county is giving that development the go ahead, even though it will lead to increased flooding. >> well, he is back.

actor alec baldwin on twitter after deactivating his account in december when he had at little trouble. this was highly publicized dispute. by the way, one of baldwin's latest tweets, we should quote, read a newspaper in print or online every day. well have you ever heard of sopa? folks are posting questions on our facebook page asking us to give you more information about it. it means to stop online piracy act and it was written by lamar smith. that law would make the unauthorized streaming of any copy writed material illegal and punishable by up to five years in prison. and internet service providers immuned if they turn folks in. critics say if it passes, it will change the internet as we know it. joining me now to talk about the issue and clarify it a bit,

the senior director of piracy and counterfeiting. and harold is the legal director for public knowledge, a group opposed to the bill. now welcome, gentleman. this is pretty complicated piece of legislation. let's try to break it down. this is really about rogue websites and government's power to block them if they stream copy written material that otherwise shouldn't be on there. harold, what is wrong with that? >> well, you know, everybody agrees that piracy is theft. but you know what? the problem here is how we're going about blocking it. this is not just about making something illegal because these things are already illegal. down loading something you don't have to right to. already against the law and in fact, we have lawsuits every day. this gets into the guts of the internet. and that is where the problem is. >> the problem is it would allow companies to block the website. make a website invisible

online. you think that's exactly what aught to happen. >> these websites are dedicated not just to counterfeiting, to piracy, but to counterfeiting. every product you know of is counterfeit somewhere along the line, a good chance. shoes, clothes, cosmetics, even medicine, electronics. it is dangerous. the products are shoty and they can harm people. they have no business being on the internet. just as they have no business being in our marketplace. >> those are extreme cases, but perhaps a website that has one single page of illegal material could be blacklisted and banned from the internet. not true? >> that's not true at all. the legislation is targeted at the worst of the worst online. >> would the government have the power to get those others who are not the worst of the worst? >> no. the bill is targeted to those dedicated to counterfeiting and piracy and the bill only applies to foreign rogue websites because domestic

sites we can reach under u.s. law. stealing 14 million jobs and laughing all the way to the bank. >> is he right? is it that specific? >> here's the problem. you know, that may be what they are trying to do, but we all know shoplifting is against the law, but we don't give mall cops machine guns. the problem here is, let me tell you what labs are cyber security guys said about this. they said that it compromises our security and it would be ineffective. so not only does this make us at risk for cyber hacking because we are getting into the guts of internet here. but we are also going to have it not even work. so for me, the real question here is, why is congress rushing this through? i mean, this bill got dropped at the end of october. was pushed through in one hearing and you know, this is a case where --

we have a roundup of news you can use in tonight's consumer alert. ford is recalling more than 450,000 older model vehicles. now this affects the 2004 and 2005 ford freestar and mercury monterey minivan and the 2001 and 2002 ford escape compact suv's. it needs to repair a safety defect that can cause those vehicles to catch fire or lose power. >> company behind the twinkies is carrying too much debt around the middle and it seems more of us have changed how we eat. skipping the white wonder bread in favor of the whole grain. hostess has filed for

bankruptcy. don't worry. the company is going to churn out your favorite treats, but it is carrying significant debt and needs to get a handle on a cash squeeze due in part by growing labor and ingredient costs. now the 131-year-old company is suing apple and htc corporation for patent infringement. apple and htc used kodak's patented digital photography technology to transmit images on their devices. coe kodak's suit is a last ditch event to end bankruptcy. some of you are weighing in. >> what are you doing, buffy? >> i'm feeding the baby. >> these sesame street clips were used decades ago. >> the 90s brought the
