but first a new winter weather alert. some snowflakes could be coming. this is 9news now. right now, believe it or not, it's still in the 50s. but it's going to be a much different story when you wake up in the morning. >> absolutely. a blast of arctic air is on the way. meteorologist topper shutt joins us live outside on the weather terrace to tell us when it all rolls in. >> the winds are starting to pick up now. it's still in the 50s, but the cold air is just a few hours away. let's start with the temperatures. we're looking at temps downtown in the low 50s. in fact, 51 at national. 52 in gaithersburg. i mean, that is incredible for this time of night. remember, our average high is only 42. now, you go far enough west, it's still 50 in winchester. you jump the divide and temperatures in oakland are already 34. the cold air is still on the other side of the divide, but it will not take long to roll in here once the front rolls through about 3:00, 4:00 in the morning. here is a look at the radar, satellite picture radar combined. you can see the clouds roll in.

some showers have appeared to the west of us. look at the rain. it's now snow in much of virginia and in eastern ohio. there is a lot of cold air wrapping around this system. live doppler 9000, a couple showers of just kind of light activity out 66. more showers up 81 and crossing over towards york and our friends up in chambersburg. the cold air is not far away. the wake up weather 30s to start, 30s at 7:00 and essentially 30s at 9:00. flurries are possible. if you're an early commuter, you might see flurries or snow showers. we might see another round in the afternoon. we'll come back. we'll show you the advisory and let you how long it's going to be cold and if it's going to last through the weekend. >> thank you, top. now, the chilly temperatures are one of the reasons the mayor says the occupy protestors have to go. he sent a letter saying the

demonstrators must leave mcphearson square. matt jablow has the details. >> this is a public park. >> reporter: three months after beginning their occupation of mcphearson square. >> we are occupying this park. >> reporter: it looks like the occupy dc protestors can still be moving out. actually moving perhaps just a flew blocks away. >> how long have you been here? >> since october 8th. >> reporter: citing a growing certain about a growing number of rats at mcphearson square. >> the rats were here before we came. >> reporter: and about the unhealthy and unsafe conditions revealed during several health department inspections here. >> we need to clean up more. but other than that, it's okay. >> reporter: mayor vincent gray has asked the national park service to move the occupiers to freedom plaza where a separate group of protestors have been camping out since october. >> i think it's ridiculous. it will never work. >> reporter: protestors we talked to were not pleased about

the move. nor by the characterization of their living conditions. >> it's premium. we clean it up each and every day. >> you just saw some evidence that that's not always the case. now, that was matt jablow reporting. now, we do not have word yet when or if the park service will respond to the mayor's request. at times today, it seemed like the entire united states government was scrambling to distance itself from those four marines who apparently were urinating on dead taliban fighters in afghanistan. but even as officials at the highest reaches of government promised accountability, others are coming to the defense of the marines. gary nurenberg is here with today's developments. >> the associated press says two of the four marines have been identified as members of a sniper unit. their actions are being roundly condemned by their superiors. the video shows what appears to be marines jokingly urinating on the bodies of fallen fighters.

they call the actions utterly despicable and was joined by damning statements from secretary of the navy and the secretary of state who promised anyone involved -- >> must be held fully accountable. >> the white house press secretary. >> it's deplorable. reprehensible and unacceptable. >> but online one blogger wrote i do love the marines. i don't care that these marines urinated on savages. so what. a former military prosecutors on 9 news now at 7:00. >> this kind of conduct is made a violation of the law of war first because it's wrong. it's still immoral conduct even though you can sometimes relate to the horrors and frustrations of the battlefield. >> visitors to the memorial that honors marine traditions worry that some -- >> will try to demonize the entire forces of the marine corps which has a lot of individuals that are not this type of character. >> the marine corps did

something that's like the statue behind me, its pride, its honor, and that wasn't pride and honor for me. >> more than 100,000 marines remain in afghanistan. a taliban statement making it clear the tape increases the risks to those forces. >> the americans will see with their own eyes the increased anger and hatred of the afghan people. >> david martin reading a taliban statement. to understand the anger of afghan seeing the video, it may help to remember the incensed outrage and fury felt by americans when our special forces troops were dragged through the streets and hoisted on light poles after they were killed fighting in somalia. they still feel raged at how the american fighters were treated then. the images on the new tape could likewise influence afghan abuse of americans for years. derek. >> gary nurenberg, we thank you.

we are going to catch the crooks terrorizing your neighborhood. >> that is the promise from police tonight. the families living in northwest after months of several armed robberies. ken molestina has the latest. >> reporter: yes. woodley park and chevy chase have now been targeted by the robbers armed with guns. and now police are talking tough. they're trying to make this stop. the targeted northwest neighborhoods are often quiet and peaceful. although not immune to crime, police say this is the first time these robberies have been abundant and aggressive. and they're happening in different pockets of dc's second district. >> we're going a lot of different things. . >> reporter: neighbors packed into a church for a community meeting to address the problem. the chief of police and other brass were there to get their message across. the wave of armed robberies can be dated back to last november. but as of january 1st, police confirmed the strike of crimes have gone up drastically. men with guns are approaching

victims and robbing them. although no specific suspect information has been given, it's all about the work of three street thugs targeting well to do neighborhoods. >> this is very unsettling. >> reporter: investigators are asking anyone who notices anything out of the area to give them a call. dc police chief says sometimes those tips lead to a case being solved. >> the good things about neighborhoods like this is the residents are very civic minded and they're very aware. and they'll start reporting suspicious activity. they'll give us the tips we need. >> reporter: and now that police are stepping up patrols, those who are living in fear here are hoping the cops hold up their end of the promise. >> it's the uncertainty of knowing whether or not the police are going to catch someone and put an end to this crime spree. >> reporter: and that's relieved in this investigation. at least some of the robberies the clerks are using a dark color two door mitsubishi. now that the neighborhood has been asked to stay vigilant,

police are hoping the tips will begin to come in. back to you. >> all right. well, right now a family is waiting to see if their loved one will live through the night. around 9:00 this morning, the bullets started flying all across southeast dc landing the teen and two others in the hospital. the three shootings happened all within a 20-block radius on alabama avenue, 4th street and wheeler hill road. the most frightening case unfolded outside martin luther king elementary school. the parents came running to the scene thinking the kids may have seen something too traumatic. the victim suffered critical injuries. >> shooting, gambling, smoking, doing everything. they need to put an end to it because it doesn't make sense. every single day, a mother has to come in here and worry about whether or not our child is going to be okay. >> so far, dc police have not made any arrests. but they did find clothing and a weapon not so far away from that school. the other two shooting victims are expected to be okay.

metro riders be ready for a fare hike. they introduced a plan to overcome a shortfall. the proposal calls for a 5% fare hike for both metrorail and metro bus and a $0.25 parking rate increase. but the biggest change will be for riders who use paper fare cards instead of smart trip cards. those passengers would pay one way flat fares of $6 during rush hour and $4 off peak. >> people who pay taxes, people who pay fares are never going to be happy about it. but if we're providing a good service, we should be able to keep the price in comparative range with other xhod advertise. >> now, the -- commodities. >> now, the fare hike is not a done deal. if they approve it, we can see the first changes by the beginning of july. still ahead tonight, the girl scout video that youtube doesn't want the public to see. also, how to post on

he was a son, a father and now he will be remembered as a hero. specialist ronald wildron died after he was hit by an explosive device in afghanistan. tonight his home town honored the fallen soldier. he leaves behind two daughters. >> they're going to hear the stories from his family and his friends about how much he loved them and how wonderful of a person he was and he's definitely going to be a very missed part of their life. >> i just hope that not just his family but the entire country understands the costs that have been paid by these military families and that we are motivated by that to live lives and to build a country that's worthy of their sacrifices. >> his military career also included two years serving in the old guard. the ceremonial unit responsible

for burying the dead at arlington, and that is where he will be in terd tomorrow. volunteer fire departments are expected to line much of the route. two years ago today, a devastating earthquake rocked the small nation of haiti. that disaster killed 316,000 people and displaced 1.5 million. more than 500,000 are still in temporary settlement camps. the president says there is so much more to do for that country to fully recover. well, more than six years after she vanished in aruba, the death of natalee holloway is now official. an alabama judge has signed a court order declaring holloway dead. she disappeared on a high school trip in 2005. she was last seen with vandersloot who remains the only suspect in her disappearance, and just yesterday vandersloot pled guilty. holloway's body has never been

found. tonight dozens of videos are on youtube for a teenager's push for girl scout cookies. the california teen is upset a colorado troop allowed a transgender girl to join. the 14-year-old who only identifies herself as taylor says the money from the cookies will go to support a pro-transgender agent. >> what is wrong with that? for one reason, girl scouts describes itself as an all girl experience. with that label, families trust that the girls will be in an environment that is not only nurturing and sensitive to girl's needs but also safe for girls. >> well, people from the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities have now been posting their own videos supporting girl scouts. taylor's video was produced in conjunction with a california group called honest girl scouts. it has since been removed from public viewing. for countless individuals, facebook has become an integral

is in the western 1-half of west virginia. this is the front. it will cross over tonight. ahead of it, we'll have some showers. nothing really heavy. behind it enough cold air and maybe some snow showers early tomorrow morning, like 5:00 in the morning. primarily we think gaithersburg north. in the meantime, a couple of showers have actually popped up here across parts of the metro area. heaviest area back across i81 and the mountains. live doppler 9000, light activity up towards frederick. a little activity in fairfax county and montgomery county. we'll zoom in a little bit. a little bit of activity out towards allegheny. more showers out towards ashburn. now, in the next hour, what happens, these showers, by the way, are moving almost due north at about 25 miles an hour. the showers will increase in intensity and coverage especially out to the west around stevens city and out towards i81. let's talk about what is going to happen here. blustery with highs in the 30s

tomorrow. i would bet the highs would 50 tomorrow. temps are are going to fall all day. so the deal is, dress for the 20s because that is going to be the wind chill with the 30, 35-mile an hour winds. flurries are possible. especially early in the morning and perhaps again late in the afternoon and early evening. it's going to be cold all weekend. temperatures are going to hold in the 30s all through sunday. a little moderation in temps by the time we get to martin luther king day. 6:00 in the morning, everything is gone. i think this is a little fast. some of the precip will be a little closer to us. 5:00, 6:00, maybe a snow shower near frederick and north of baltimore, but that's about it. after that, we're just looking at a mix of sun and clouds. out to the west, though, big time snow west of the divide. we're talking probably a foot by the time we get into saturday morning, which is good news. 6:00 on friday evening, just a few clouds. nothing really to worry about. by this time tomorrow night, we're looking at clouds to the

west of us. a little system tries to pass through on saturday into the morning. i don't think we'll see any snow showers from it, but notice it continues to snow out west of the divide and will for quite some time. overnight showers possibly ending in snow showers. windy and colder. low temperatures in the 30s. tomorrow morning flour reez. temps -- flurries. temps in the 30s. by afternoon, more of the same. variable clouds. windy and cold. maybe a flurry. highs 35-40. winds now westerly at 15-25 and gusty. next seven days, it stays cold. we're in the 30s on saturday. we're in the 30s on sunday. we have a flake on sunday. maybe a flurry or snow shower. nicer, though, for martin luther king day. back in the 40s. a little light rain on tuesday. look at that, we're back in the 50s. and then a little colder this time next week. >> okay. hey, you got a new gig? >> yes. >> yes, we do. >> and we here at wusa9 are pretty excited about this new
