secretary of defense leon panetta said it could interrupt peace talks. an internal and criminal investigation is going to happen. members of a marine sniper unit appear to be urinating on corpses in this video. the act would violate international laws of war. it's not clear if the dead were taliban fighters, civilians or someone else. at least two of the marines seen in the video have been identifiedment several more may be in trouble. >> anyone, anyone found to have participated or known about it, having engaged in such conduct must be held fully accountable. >> defense secretary leon panetta condemned the video saying i have seen the footage and i find the behavior depicted in it utterly deplorable. he spoke with afghan president ha mid karzai who called it inhumane. the taliban issued a statement

the combat brigade consists of 3,000 to 4,000 troops. the withdrawal is part of a broader redirection of u.s. forces. the u.s. plans to begin rotating unit in and out of europe. a group of social conservatives is holding a meeting in texas deciding whether to back mitt romney or someone else. meanwhile, with the south carolina primary now just nine days away, there's pressure on romney's opponents to tone down the criticism of his business dealings. we go to eye necessary ma ray in washing -- one of the contenders pressured to tone down attacks is newt gingrich. even though yesterday he didn't repeat his criticism of mitt romney's business record, he did defend his right to question it. newt gingrich is pulling out all the stops against his biggest rival. >> massachusetts moderate, mitt romney, he'll say anything to win. >> in a new web ad he blasts mitt romney comparing him to

shrinking in south carolina. however, a number of republicans rallied around mitt romney after the recent attacks against him, including the head of the u.s. chamber of commerce and also former new york city mayor rudy giulia giuliani. they say the recent attacks only undermine the free market principles of their party and also their chief argument against president obama. terrell? ines ferre in washington for us. thank you. house republicans will vote next week on president obama's latest request to increase the nation's debt limit. yesterday the president asked congress for another en trilli an everied e b g debt it to 6.4 trillion. enough to allow the government to keep borrowing until after the election. missed signs of the housing bubble burst and a radioactive recall by bed, bath and beyond. that doesn't sound good. ashley morrison has more. good morning. >> good morning, terrell. in overseas trading, the nikkei had a high, firn finishing higher than 1%.

the hang seng also rose more than half a percent. investors on wall street are anxious to hear the earnings report from jpmorgan chase. it's the first of the big banks to announce fourth quarter results. stocks finished higher on thursday. the dow added 21 points while the nasdaq gained nearly 14. newly released documents show a federal reserve officials did not see the collapse of the housing market coming. transcripts from 2006 meetings reveal that chairman ben bernanke and other fed officials, including current treasury secretary timothy geithner failed to recognize the risk of falling home prices. the collapse of the housing market a year later helped trigger the great recession. applications for unemployment benefits rose last week to their highest level in six weeks. the spike can be attributed to the loss of thousands of seasonal jobs. but there is encouraging news. home depot is planning to hire 70,000 seasonal workers beginning in the spring. the failed solar panel maker

solyndra wants to give its workers bonuses. the bankrupt company is asking a judge to approve $500,000 to give up to 21 of its employees. solyndra says the bonuses are necessary to keep those workers. the company received a half billion dollar loan from the federal government before declaring bankruptcy. bed, bath and beyond is recalling met cal tissue holders because they contain a low level of radioactive material. it affects this tissue holder sold in 200 stores in 20 states. a spokesperson from the commission says the product poses little health risk but that it's better to simply avoid any unnecessary radiation. and target is taking aim at shoppers with more upscale tastes. the retailer announced it will feature products from specialty shops and boutiques starting in the spring. target will offer expanded displays of apple products in

inches on the windy city. and much of the great lakes region. there weren't just kids in there. there were plenty of adults. did you see that? it wasn't just fun and games at chicago airports by the way as the winter storm blew through. thousands of travelers found themselves stranded for hours. the snow forced hundreds of cancellations, especially flights bound for the east coast. as for the satellite map, as it shows here, it's far from over. over the next 48 hours, there will be heavy accumulations from michigan to new england, especially in the lake effect regions of northern ohio, pennsylvania and new york. reaching as far south as virginia. no one in the lower 48 states has seen anything like this. it's been the snowiest winter in memory in alaska. in the town of cordova, 150 miles east of anchorage, they've seen the worse of it. national guardsmen are helping to clear the 14 feet of snow that's fallen there since november. on the second anniversary of the earthquake that devastated haiti, the prime minister said it's a place where people bury the dead and go back to work.

a ceremony marking the 2010 quake was held yesterday at a mass gravesite north of port-au-prince. the disasters killed more than 300,000 people. announced the donation from the construction fund he leads. natalee holloway of alabama was 18 years old when she was last seen in may of 2005. she had been listed as missing ever since. now a judge declares what had been apparent for years. edward lawrence reports. a birmingham, alabama, judge called this hearing a sad occasion. before he officially declared natalee holloway dead. her father asked for the declaration. >> we've been dealing with her death for the last six and a half years. hopefully this meeting today will kind of put some closure on it. >> dave holloway, her father needs a death certificate so a college fund so his son can be

this comes day after an espn popularity poll found that tebow is america's favorite active professional athlete. to the nba, a record night for dwight howard. a famously poor free-throw shooter. howard went to the line 39 times that breaks wilt chamberlain's record for most attempts in a game. he finished with 21. that led the magic to a 117-109 victory over golden state. in memphis, a rough night for knicks leading scorer carmello anthony. he hurt his wrist but stayed in. he drove for a two-hand jam in the first. taking a pass from mike conley in the second for an alley-oop. he scored 26 in the game. in the third, carmello anthony sprained his ankle. hops to the bench. he did not come back to the game. memphis won this one 94-83. in college ball, number 8 duke hosting 16th ranked rah va virginia.

>> colbert super p.a.c. transfer, activate. since politicians can't run super p.a.c.'s. the transfer legally clears the way for colbert to enter the south carolina primary. colbert is forming an exploratory committee for a possible candidacy. super p.a.c.'s like colberts are the golden goose of politic. they can't donate money to individual candidates but can raise limited amounts from corporations or individuals. it's all to be spent for or against a particular candidate. chip reid reports. >> after poor results in iowa and new hampshire, newt gingrich's campaign would under normal circumstances be all but over. instead he's charging into south carolina, gunning for front runner mitt romney. it's made possible by the generosity of one of gingrich's closest friends. billionaire sheldon at ellison. the two men bonded over their support forisse real. he threw gingrich a lifeline donating $5 million to a

examples of how the political clout of the wealthy has grown ex poen nengsly. we have a negative ad war. >> rick santorum is still in the race thanks in part to the generosity of finance mogul foster freeset and a super p.a.c. has reportedly received billions from jon huntsman, sr. president obama complained about the growing political power of the wealthy but didn't complain when jeffrey katzenberg gave a super p.a.c. $2 million to help the president. for all the candidates, there's a risk in being associated with sometimes controversial billionaires. for example, he made his billions in casinos. many conservative republicans strongly oppose gambling. in south carolina thursday, gingrich told reporters that he would not be as competitive now if he didn't have the support of that super p.a.c. that received

first. >> it's snowing across parts of the area north but it's not going to be a widespread snow event. the one bigger concern that the wet roads and the showers might get a flash freeze where you get some ice to form and that could be a problem well north and west of town right now. >> but not now though. >> upper 30s in d. c. and not anywhere close to having a frozen road here in the immediate metro. let's show you the day planner because temperatures are going to dip into the 30s and then kind of rebound closer to 40 this afternoon. with the winds gusting at times to 35, 40 miles an hour, windchill near 6, windchills will stay in the 20s. there's the front coming through with the heavy showers in spots especially up in pennsylvania where there have been some good snows overnight if ohio and pennsylvania. see this dark blue area in west central p. a.? that's managed to sneak in to maryland, western maryland and going to look at that right now on live doppler 9000 hd.

we've got the light to moderate showers from charles county to prince george's county, the district, montgomery up to frederick. but far northern frederick and eastern washington counties this is where we have a little bit of snow coming down but this does move in pretty quickly. other than a light coating and a couple of slick spots, not expecting much more than that. a look west of leesburg will have out of it where temperatures are still generally above freezing here. the colder air is moving in and if the roads stay wet that's the concern for the slick spots and of course any snow that falls. still in the mid 40s in annapolis and low 50s at the pax river naval air station. wind gusts gusting to 43 at andrews air force base and 31 in cumberland and 37 here in washington. monika samtani, winds are going to be a big problem with the advisory until 6:00 p.m. the winds and wet road conditions actually caused several accidents overnight. that's what you want to be aware of is the wet road conditions. there had been an accident

southbound on route 270 at 355. that's been cleared. looking good right now from frederick to the point where the lanes divide. on the beltway a couple of lanes blocked with construction. the usual spot on the outer loop through silver spring. now the big thing that happened last night was on canal road between arizona avenue and reservoir road where a car hit a tree about 11:00 last night. d dot says there's been a temporary fix. pepco says they will be out there at first light. so right now i think you're good to go on canal road on the inbound side. we'll keep you posted on that situation as the morning progressings. outside right now. on the north side of town. here's what it looks like at university boulevard. a little bit of volume again as you can see the wet roads as well and now over to virginia on northbound side of i-95 on the vdot -- i-395 on the vdot camera and no problems to the bridge. coming up in my next report, another look around the area.
