the 30s this morning. and they're not going to recover much. lucky to get back to 40 the afternoon. windy too. loots of wind at times and winds can gust 40, 50 miles an hour or more so wind advisory north and west of d. c. until 6:00 p.m. front came through a couple of hours ago with it some rain. some hear showers and north and west even a little bit of snow. getting reports that up in olney and howard county, light snow here but look how quickly the back edge is pulling away. it's coming out of western charles county. virginia, you're pretty much done with any precip and still moderate showers from the bay, annapolis over to baltimore and carroll county as well with temperatures now down to 39 in d. c.. still 47 la plata but look it's 32 in hagerstown and winchester. monika? overall, things aren't looking too bad if you're planning to head over to the beltway, you just got the wet road conditions right now. we'll go to southern maryland and take a look here on the south side of town. looking fine to the wilson bridge. no problems to report on route 4 or route 5, route 301. in fact a live look at the

route 4. pennsylvania avenue, here's what it look like near andrews air force base and a last live look on the northbound side of 395 at the 14th street bridge. looking good on 395 to this point as well. coming up in my next report, another look into virginia at 5:09. mike and jessica? sounds good monika. see you then. this morning we are waiting for a response now from the national park service when it comes to a new demand to get the occupy d. c. protestors out of the mcpherson square. >> and a letter from district mayor gray cites health and safety concerns. 9news now reporter delia goncalves is live at the mcpherson square encampment with the story. good morning delia. >> reporter: good morning jessica, mike, you know one can easily say the park service has made many accommodations for the occupiers and allowing the protestors really to exercise their first amendment rights even bending clear park rules that ban specifically overnight camping. calling this which certainly looks like they're camping, a

24 hour vigil instead. but now mayor gray has asked the park service to evict the occupiers from mcpherson square citing the health department concern of possible hypothermia, improper heating sources which could cause fire or carbon monoxide poisoning or a major rat infestation. >> it increases the rats only by not a lot, but a little bit. we trying our best to get rid of the rats. we already got the food situation dealt with. we got no food here in the park. >> so we clean it up each and every day. you walk around and pick up trash. dispose whatever that needs to be disposed. it's up to the garbage people to pick the trash up, not us. >> reporter: okay, but besides that, that safety concern and the health concerns, there's a super concern that happened in a major -- well, a potential crime that happened here

earlier this week. a man is now facing child cruelty charges. police say he left a 13-month- old baby inside one of these tents. she was just wearing a onesie and it was about 40 degrees outside. now the occupiers say he wasn't part of our movement but certainly this has raised lots of concerns about the safety of these folks here and the health department says we've averted a tragedy in that case but may not in the next emergency. now in the meantime the mayor says that at the very least, maybe we should just move these folks over to freedom plaza. the folks over at the plaza, another group of protestors, they have a -- a permit and health department -- the health department director says that encampment is more sanitary and more organized. back to you. jessica, mike? >> thanks delia. delia goncalves live in mcpherson square this morning. two people are in custody this morning after the shooting of nearly three teenagers near schools in southeast d. c.. the shootings all happened

around 9:30 yesterday morning around the congress heights recreation center and be a lieu senior high school. police chief lanier says one gun was recovered and at least one elementary school was put on lockdown. also addressing is recent crime spree in northwest washington. there's been a wave of armed robberies mostly around au park, woodley park and most recently in chevy chase. people have been approached near their homes and robbed at gunpoint. the chief reassured residents the robbers will be caught and asked them to report any suspicious activity. well, you can add one more republican to the race for u.s. senate in virginia. prince william delegate bob marshall will run for the republican nomination in that race. he's now the fifth person seeking that seat after democrat jim webbannounced he wasn't running for re-election. he'll file the official paperwork next week. george allen is also running.

and another former virginia governor is making news in the race for president. jim glamorizes he will support -- gillmore says he will support mitt romney. he says he's a candidate that can beat barack obama and put the conservative values into action he says. it is 5:06 and i am watching your money on wall street and boy is wall street on a roll. a rally here at home yesterday helped to power stocks into their best monthly performance since socket and we'll have to see the earnings out this morning can help sustain the rally. checking the numbers -- a car title lendor will refund nearly $600,000 to more than 850 customers as part of a settlement with virginia. attorney general ken cuccinelli

announced the settlement with virginia doe min john services, the state accused cash point of operating without a license for two months in 2010 and charging illegally high interest rates. get this -- up to 243% interest. if you love amusement parks and you need a job, you're in luck. six flags america announced it's hiring 200 seasonal workers for its park rather in already go, maryland. a -- largo, maryland, a park spokesman says there are openings in all ride positions and also paid internships for college students. applications are available through six flags' website. well, if you feel like the movie this weekend we have some options for you. we're going to preview the ones that are in theaters later in this house. and later a soldier accused of releasing classified documents to wikileaks is one step closer to trial. and virginia and duke comes down to the final seconds in sports. we'll have the highlights, keen it here.

on this friday morning, a lot of wind today. the rain and snow showers the thrust of them just about out of here so the story is going to be the cold and the wind. we'll have a decent amount of sunshine i think once we get rid of the showers this morning. our day planner calling for temperatures not moving much. climbing back to about the 40- degree mark this afternoon. but with winds southwest at about 20 to 30, gusting at times 40 to 50, windchills are holding in the 20s and a wind advisory is in effect north and west until 6:00 p.m. i'll have that full map for you and live doppler 9000 hd in the next five minutes, right now monika samtani has timesaver traffic. northbound side of 95. all lanes are open from the occoquan river to this point and to the 14th street bridge. more on virginia roadways

coming up in my next report, at 5:17. mike? making news now at 5:09. more than six years after she vanished in aruba, natalee holloway has been declared legally dead in her home state of alabama. the long time suspect in her disappearance, joran van der sloot, will be sentenced today in peru after pleading guilty to killing a woman there. the pentagon is promising a full investigation into a disturbing video that apparently shows u.s. marines urinating on corpses in afghanistan. the bodies believed to be those of taliban fighters, the acts could violate international laws of war and threaten peace talks in afghanistan. military investigators are recommending a court-martial for bradley manning, that's the military equivalent of a trial. manning is accused of giving more than 700,000 secret u.s. documents to the whistle blowing website wikileaks. it includes aiding the enemy. they have been camped out in downtown d. c. for more than

it is weather first time now and it is getting chilly out there. two kinds of days today. a little bit warmer right now. >> if you've south and east of town, the cold air is coming in. it's cold now. you came in early. it's already dropped -- >> since we've been on tv. >> we're in the upper 30s now and windchills are dropping into the 20s. it's cold out there. we've got light snow in a few spots like olney and mount airy. >> arctic air right? >> arctic air is moving in but the light snow is not going to last long and it will be gone very quickly. and garrett county schools by the way are not getting light snow. they're getting heavy snow and may get a foot of snow between today, tonight and tomorrow.

schools are closed there. skiers are happy. except the gusts could be 50 miles an hour. so that will make life tough and that's where we're starting with the wind advisory. look at the areas north and west of town in orange. wind advisory in effect until 6:00 p.m. those gusts 50, might even get to 55 in some spots, frederick, loudoun, northern fauquier, high winds today. even here in town dealing with the winds. and temperatures are going to make -- it's going to feel like it's in the 30s. look at this we've got winds gusting right now near 40 miles an hour in hagerstown to 20 in washington. 18 in leesburg and 32 at the pax river naval air station. 32. hey ron, let's get the camera adjusted. that's 32 at pax river naval air station. the bus stop forecast, we have got winds today you know -- the precip is just about gone so i'm not even going to have it in the bus stop forecast. partly sunny, windy and cold. 35 to 45 with a sunrise at

7:26. as we look at the day planner, it is going to be a chilly day today. temperatures barely getting to the 40-degree mark. winds southwest to west at about 20 to 30 miles per hour with gusts 45 to 50. so you can forget the temperatures because windchills will make it feel like it's in the 20s. snow is coming through now into pennsylvania and in western maryland, any of the ridge tops facing west, get that up slope component and that's where the snow is going to be flying. the precip is done west of d.c.. east of town still have a few showers that are going on light stuff though down south into southern maryland and over toward annapolis. you can see some more moderate showers but this stuff is about to pull into the bay across the bay bridge. so even anne arun dell county is going to be doing better in the next few minutes. that's it. there she goes. that's our snow chance today. we're 39 now. 48 still in southern maryland but down to freezing in parts of the valley and there may be

a slick spot because roads were wet. outside good visibility on the michael & son weather camera with 39 degrees and cloudy skies at reagan national. right now the windchill 33 because the winds are only west at 9 but that's going to change in a big way because the cold air is coming in and look how the snows persist in the mountains. lots and lots of win today. the forecast calling for temperatures around 40 at best this afternoon with windchills in the 200s. tonight we're in the 20s and get to 30 for tomorrow. it will be breezy. for sunday, 34. cold day with less wind and then next week a little recovery from martin luther king jr. day and tuesday, breezy temperatures are in the 40s. monika? overall things aren't too bad. we had a couple of accidents around town weather related earlier on. it looks like everything's pretty much cleared up so if you're heading out the door right now it's pretty much friday morning light. here's what it looks like on the west side of town. no problems on 66, coming in from gainesville, centreville and all the way into fairfax we'll go inside the beltway now

live at the roosevelt bridge. no problems to report here into the downtown area. back to the maps this time 95, 395 still looking pretty good from springfield all the way up the line to the 14th street bridge. let's take a lock at that live right now on the inbound side here as you can see volumes are very light and no issues into the downtown area here as well. and we'll go to the american legion bridge on the west side of town. between bethesda and tyson's corner, very light this morning. coming up in my next report, we'll take another look around the area at 5:24. but first, this martin luther king jr. holiday weekend, there will be major track work tying up the blue and orange lines downtown. now starting tonight, there will be no train service between l'enfant plaza and capitol south on the blue and orange lines. those stations should reopen in time for tuesday morning's rush hour. free shuttle buses will get you around the closure but it will add 20 to 30 minutes to your trip. mike and jessica? all right, thank you monika. capitals got two players on this year's all-star team and one of them is going fort first

5:21. the last of the rain and even some light snow north of the region pull away. this is it with the precip just about over and as we look at the futurecast, here we are at about 8:00. temps in the upper 30s here, some low 30s north and west. the snow flying in the mountains today. garrett county, any of the ski areas, you'll be running into snow there. for us temperatures barely moving, we'll get close to 40 degrees, i don't think we're making 40, i think 40 is about it. 30s north and west. and the bigger problem, the wind advisory until 6:00 north and west where winds could be gusting 40, 45 maybe 50 miles an hour at times this afternoon. jess and mike over to you. the uva cavaliers take the blue devils down to the wire. and one of the capitals was

happy friday morning, i'm jessica doyle in for andrea roane. we have a smile on our face weekend the weekend is almost upon us -- because the weekend is almost upon us. >> we have some pizza coming up next. but that's coming up later. >> you brought a pizza? >> hot pizza too, here's monika samtani, she does traffic. here's howard bernstein. he's happy because he's got a working vacation. >> i will be at a weather conference next creek. so anny will be filling in. >> there happens to be some skiing going on. >> it is at stream boat springs. a ton of snow today and tonight with the winds in garrett county. so schools are closed today because of that threat. there could be near blizzard concerns when you consider the snow and the -- conditions when you consider the snow and winds so wind advisories are up.

here's a look at the day planner for you on this friday morning. temperatures now in town in the upper 30s. we're done with the precip, cloudy skies and we're not going to see -- cloudy skies and we're not going to see temperatures dip much. recover to 40-degrees this afternoon but a wind advisory north and west until 6:00 p.m. again those winds are going to be howling at times especially in some of the higher elevations west. maybe gusts up to 55 there. here in town, 45, maybe 50-mile an hour gusts. little bit of snow mixed in overnight and had reports down in olney across howard county and mount air ray and frederick of course and that's it. this is probably just a little bit of plight snow here coming through southern howard, far eastern montgomery county. have some lighter showers and anne arundel and calvert counties now pushing away to annapolis and the bay bridge. your temperatures are still in the 40s south and east, upper 30s now from la plata to annapolis to d.c.. low 30s around freezing in the valley out to luray. some problems here even cumberland at 28 with potentially a little bit of a slickness in spots. if anything was wet from the

overnight and as far as the winds, they're gusting to 31 in cambridge. 18 in bee leesburg, not bad now but near 40 in hagerstown. what's happening on this friday morning commute? here's monika samtani with more. i knew it wouldn't last especially with the road conditions. bad news on the northbound side of i-95 where we have the accident. take a look it's the accident right at the ramp for the inner loop of the beltway. guess what? delays already begin at the franconia springfield parkway. once you're beyond that, it's fine but again the accident here on the ramp to the inner loop of the beltway with the left shoulder getting by. this time to the north side of town no problems to report on the beltway right here that construction has been cleared up for the overnight hours. through silver spring you're good to go with the exception of the wet roads conditions. and we'll take a live look in fort meade on the southbound side of 295 right here the bw

parkway at route 271. coming up in my next report, i'll update you on the situation in springfield at 5:38. mike and jessica? thank you monika. this morning, d.c. officials will hold a hearing about the future of a northwest nightclub. >> that's right d.c. police chief lanier ordered an emergency shutdown of the mood lounge on december 30th after two stabbings outside the club that morning. now the city's alcohol beverage control board will decide whether or not to permanently revoke the club's liquor license. there have been reports the club's owner and some employees tried to hinder investigations book looking into the incident. this afternoon a soldier from frederick county, maryland will be interred at arlington national cemetery. army specialist ronald wildrick jr. was killed lance month in afghanistan. hiss career included two years serving at arlington as a member of the old guard.

he leaves behind two daughters. well, it appears the occupiers have overstayed their welcome. d.c. mayor gray asked the national park service to evicts the protestors from mcpherson square citing health and safety concerns. 9news now reporter delia goncalves live at the encampment which comes just days after a father was charged with child cruelty related to this encampment. >> reporter: this man now charged with child cruelty after police say he left a 13- month-old baby girl all alone inside one of these tents, she was just wearing onesie and it was about 40 diagnoses outside. the occupiers say he wasn't part of their organization but city officials say you know the girl is okay now but we could have had a very tragic situation here. and we may not be that lucky when the next emergency happens. officials are worried about hypothermia, fire and carbon monoxide poisoning and of

course a major rat infestation that has occurred here. protestors have been camping inside mcpherson square three months now while many say these concerns are simply overblown, they say the rats were here before they arrived. at least one protestor we spoke to agrees. >> it is unsanitary, there's rats everywhere. it's the occupiers' fault. the people who live here have been unsanitary themselves, it's repulsive to walk through here. you're repulsed by the violence and drinking. the police have hacked down on -- cracked down on the drinking quite a bit. >> reporter: the police are constantly here cracking down on drinking and other violations that occur. however, we're told the mayor is still not happy. he wants them at the very least to maybe go over to freedom plaza. the folks there, he says, are more sanitary, more organized and they even have a permit to be there. now, i can tell you at least one of the concerns from the

health department was in regards to these port-a- potties, only two here at the time which was just about a couple of weeks ago for maybe at least 100 or so people who were here. i've even seen signs about them being overflowed. so certainly a sanitary condition there. it looks like they're trying to play nice at least, they've added a third port a potty, still waiting on word from the national park service and when we have that we will get back to you and let you know what they have the say. mike? >> thanks delia. we appreciate it. she's live at mcpherson square this morning. today a man accused of helping to cover up theft of government mown is expected to -- money is expected to plead guilty. marshall grant is accused of redistricting the funds -- redistricting the funds to -- redribbling the funds to harry thomas. the charge banks' faces carries a maximum sentence of three

years in prison. today lawyers for a handful of republican presidential candidates will be arguing in virginia. rick perry filed a lawsuit last month after he wasn't allowed on virginia's primary ballot because he didn't get the required 10,000 visits to do it. well, other -- signatures to do it. well, other candidates including newt gingrich and rick santorum and huntsman are supporting the lawsuit. as of now mitt romney and ron paul are the only ones on the march 6th ballot. the time right now 5:35. i'm watching your money and helping you avoid getting ripped off. there seem to be bargains every day. deals offering services you want and need at deeply discounted prices but as is often the case in life the devil is in the details. that fine print can really dry up the price past -- drive up the price fast making the deal feel like a ripoff. >> chimney repair has been one of the situations where we see potentially consumers getting quoted with really low prices only to finds additional work needs to be done.

choir competition. mark wahlberg stars in "contraband" about a man who finds his way out of the underworld of international smuggling. he abandoned his life of crime for the family but is dragged back into the thick of things before the crime lords go after his wife and children. and disney is rereleasing a another one of its recent classics this time in 3d. "beauty and the beast," bell is taken prisoner by the beast inside his castle and eventually her kindness to the enchanted staff allows bell to see past the tough exterior. >> i love hearing you tell that story. coming up the storm system causing problems for us this morning. also left a mess in the midwest. plus, we're celebrating national pizza week with a restaurant that prides itself on using locally produced ingredients. i can't tell you how excited i am about this. >> smells really good in here already too. and let's see who's celebrating a birthday today --

weekend so far. winds are going to be the bigger problem today. a wind advisory in effect, those orange counties including montgomery, howard, loudoun, northern fauquier, frederick, everybody north and west until 6:00 p.m. with some winds at times which will gust to 50 miles an hour. that could be a big problem. right now gusting to near 40 in hagerstown. and look at oakland and garrett county winds gust to 37. you combine that with the snow and some near whiteout conditions at times. baltimore's gusts to 33. some gusts still to the 30-mile an hour range down south. pax river gusting o 32. our -- to 32. our bus stop forecast, partly sunny, to mostly sunny. windy and cold. mid 30s to mid 40s but those mid 40s will be confined tot lower eastern shore at this time. and we're not going to have a lot of recovery today. temperatures barely moving maybe back to about that 40- degree mark. winds southwest to west 20 to 35 miles an hour. with those gusts 40, maybe 50 before the day is out. we're back in the 30s by 8:00 p.m. windchills, they're going to hold in the 20s.

many maryland. we make our own sausage. the clams come out of the chesapeake bay to clean up the chesapeake. they're farm raising clams. that's kinds of everying that we do, our produce and mushrooms come from pennsylvania. >> what are we making today? >> a vegetable pizza with sauteed spinach, hot italian cherry peppers and red onions. for us the biggest thing is that there's really for our dough what makes it so good is you can't really pick it up and toss it around. like you might see in commercials. >> uh-huh. >> so one of the things duo is we stretch everything out by hand. -- we do is we stretch everything out by hands. we use bread thumbs as well instead of -- crumbs as well instead of corn meal. you kind of get it stuck in your teeth. we use bread crumbs, this is the way the place in new haven is we really like their pizza. then we put it right on to the peel. >> this is called a peel? >> yes, it's the wooden peel. >> never knew that.

>> when you're using an oven where you have a stone deck and not a con vary belt, you have to -- conveyer belt, you have to transfer the pizza straight onto the stone. >> and that's an art in itself. you can mess it up. >> or you can end up with very oddly shaped pizzas. we do pride ourselves on unusual shaped pizzas. then we put the mozzarella, this is just whole milk mozzarella we're going to put directly on. and from there, we sprinkle a tiny little bit of romano, which is sheeps milk cheese. >> characterize your sauce. so many different kinds of sauces, some are on the salty side and some are on the tangy side, what would you characterize your sauce? >> probably on the tangy side. it's a little bit of oregano and then tomatoes that are from california. >> we have a little over a minute so let's -- >> here's the spinach. >> and of course the magic of television we have one cooking in the oven that smells amazing. >> absolutely. >> cherry peppers, these are

so. staying in the mid 30s in the northern shenandoah valley. gusts at times to 30 and 40 miles an hour. wind advisory until 6:00 p.m. north and west of d.c. if you live a lock away from your child's school you expect the son or daughter to be able to walk to dallas. >> every student is assigned a bus even if they live close by the school. but peggy fox reports parents are pushing to make their schools walkable again. >> reporter: nothing wrong with being busted to school. -- bused to school. it just doesn't seem right if you live across the street. >> because of the traffic on kirby road here. >> reporter: it's a commuter route to washington. many drivers speed and don't often stop at the crosswalks, parents say there's rarely police enforcement. >> if we had a sidewalk that came down this road, it'd be easy for the two kids right here to walk to school. but instead, they're you know they're bused.

>> reporter: several parents like oliver garcia walk their kids to school. the system doesn't permit children to walk by themselves here nor would they be safe. >> it's a problem, it's a terrible issue. i mean we're all trying to build better communities, it would seem reasonable if you're within 100 yards of the school to be able to walk there. >> reporter: since drivers aren't use today stopping at walks -- used to stopping at cronks around here, you really -- crosswalks around here, you really need a crossing guard. in fact chester brook used to have a crossing guard. you need a certain number of walkers says the supervisor john foust. >> we can make some improvements. >> reporter: he says sidewalks in front of the school could be done but down kirby road it will be difficult. it's a state owned road and where there are no curbs, vdot requires sidewalks to be ten feet back. getting easements from property owners won't be easy. nor will getting vdot to install a light or steed bumps.
