hello, i'm bruce johnson. thanks for joining us. an eight-year-old boy is dead tonight, his mother hospitalized after both were struck by a car in alexandria. matt jablo joins us live.

>> reporter: it happened right where i'm standing. when it was over, an eight-year- old boy was dead. five hours later the reconstruction team were still trying to piece together details of a terrible accident. according to police a fairfax county man was driving near i- 395 in his honda accord. police say for some reason the accord suddenly went off the side of the road and hit a woman and her son. tragically the eight-year-old boy died at that time scene while his mother was taken to a nearby hospital. the driver of the accord, meanwhile, who remained at the scene, was not injured. police have not released the name of the driver or of the eight-year-old boy who was killed. they're also not saying if they believe drugs or alcohol played a role in the accident. >> matt jablow, thanks a lot.

that missing howard university student that we've been telling you about for the past couple days, a spokesperson says the university and prince george's county police have located arianna carr at an undisclosed location in hyattsville, maryland. it happened shortly before 7:00 this evening. tonight she is safe, appears to be in good health, and that's all we're being told. a woman is rescued from the frigid waters of the potomac river. it happened around 2:30 off the clara barton parkway. the woman and her dog were walking along the bank of the c & o canal when she apparently slipped and fell into the water. it she was evaluated at the scene but appeared to be okay. two americans are among the 15 passengers still missing from a capsized italian cruise ship tonight. five people are confirmed dead.

we've got amateur video of passengers waiting to leave the sinking ship. tonight the cruise company is apologizing for the tragedy. the company says it appears the captain made errors in judgment going too close to the coast and not following proper evacuation procedures. the captain faces manslaughter charges tonight. here's more from the incredible scene. >> reporter: rescue teams used a helicopter to lift out a third survivor from a damaged luxury cruise liner along the coast of italy. he was a crew member on the costa concordia who screamed for help while emergency workers checked the ship for survivors sunday. divers also found the bodies of two elderly men trapped in an emergency gathering area with their life vests still on. the cruise liner started to tip over on friday after it hit a rock, causing a 160-foot hole in the hull. owners of the costa concordia said it appears their captain

made several huh map errors that led to the accident, including taking the ship too close to shore. the captain denies he did anything wrong, saying, the rocks were not marked on his map and the ship shouldn't have hit anything. there are also questions about the evacuation process. survivors say the rush to get on lifeboats friday night was chaotic. >> people were just getting on them. people were screaming, yelling, pushing. >> reporter: the rescue operations continue night and day under dangerous conditions. that's because the ship could sink even lower and become completely submerged. these firefighters are preparing to board the costa concordia. >> we keep on working until we are sure that no one is alive. >> reporter: a couple from minnesota is among the 15 people crews are still looking for.

cbs news, italy. >> a couple from virginia beach is headed home this weekend after getting off the ship safely. they escaped in a lifeboat. fairfax county has reported its first homicide of the new year. it happened today in the 5900 block of gunther court in centreville. a 22 years old was found dead inside a home. her roommate, 22-year-old benjamin walker, has been charged with her murder. the man suspected in a string of home invasion robberies and assaults is back in maryland tonight. the state department of corrections says 33-year-old kevin ray is now in the custody of montgomery county authorities. he was arrested saturday in north carolina. he is suspected in two home invasions and a sexual assault in montgomery county and one in prince george's county. there is one less candidate in the republican race for president tonight. jon huntsman plans to withdraw

on monday. campaign officials say huntsman will endorse mitt romney in south carolina tomorrow morning. the former utah governor placed third in last week's primary despite devoting much of his campaign resources to that statement huntsman's prospects in south carolina did not look much better. rick perry and rick santorum campaigned for the conservative vote at a prayer breakfast in south carolina today. perry pleaded with voters to ignore his debate performances and instead unite behind him a the conserve tuff leader of the remaining candidates. santorum for his part is celebrating an endorsement from evangelical christian leaders. that group met in texas over the weekend and announced that santorum best upholds their beliefs. >> so as one foot soldier to another, i ask you to think about the kind of leader that you want to preside over our nation. who will be faithful to your

values? who will see the job of the president as that of a faithful ser viewpoint of the american people and to the god that created us? you don't have to let the popular media tell you who is best prepared to beat barack obama. >> we have an opportunity for south carolina, to stand behind a candidate that has consistently, courageously, forcelily havely, publicly led the fight for the values of the people who are going to go to vote next saturday. the question is, will the people of south carolina vote their conscious, or will they let people from the places that eric was talking about, the people who don't speak our language, tell them, tell you, who has the best chance of

winning. >> the south carolina primary is now less than a week away. it is next saturday. voters in south carolina and six other states this year face new laws that require them to present a government-issued photo identification card before they can vote. sponsors say this will help prevent fraud but critics say the law places an unfair burden on young low income and minority voters. the federal justice department seems to agree with all that. >> it wasn't directed at minorities. it was directed at the process. i don't think you wait until there is a problem before you act. i know we didn't intend for that to be discriminatory. >> the election process in south carolina, at least it appears to be extremely clean over the entire statement. >> at least 956 individuals voted after they were dead or more realisticallily, people voted using their name and or

credentials. >> but attorney general eric older says it's discriminatory because black voters in south carolina are 20% more likely than white voters to lack a driver's license or state photo id card. texas governor rick perry is now appealing a federal judge's decision to add him and three others to a virginia ballot. in a filing today perry's attorneys requested that the court order his name be placed on the ballot, or order the ballots not be printed or mailed before the court considers the appeal. perry sued last month after failing to submit enough signatures to get on the march 6th ballot. newt gingrich, rick santorum, and jon huntsman also failed to qualify and later joined the lawsuit. more fallout from the corruption case that led to the resignation of d.c. council member harry thomas junior.

golf pro james garvin is expected to sign a plea deal with prosecutors, according to his attorney. mr. james son says garvin worked with marshall bank at a foundation that kicked city grant money back. the 71-year-old pleaded guilty on friday in federal court to helping thomas cover up the theft of federal funds. a new casino is set to open in the summer. that means new job opportunities. we're going to explain. also, we're going to tell you where the first family attended church services on dr. martin luther king jr.'s birthday. and after a cold weekend we're heading for a very cold night. although we get some sunshine tomorrow, moderate temperatures are a little milder, but then there will be more of a chill

a delta air lines flight, 414, left atlanta just after 6:00 tonight for costa rica. the captain decided to divert to tampa after a passenger became unruly. authorities were on hand when the plane touched down. a new maryland casino is slated to open this summer. owners say they have lots of new jobs to fill. the complex at arundel mills mall will be one of the biggest gaming and entertainment venues in the country. it will have more than 4700 slot machines. owners hope to hire some 1500 people. for more information on would positions will be available, go to our website at wusa9.com. the first family attended church services in northwest

washington today. president barack obama, the first lady, and daughters visited zion baptist church in northwest. that church is founded back in 1864 by african americans who migrated to washington from fredericksburg, virginia. the president and first lady had not yet settled on one church in the nation's capitol. tomorrow morning the first family will participate in a service project in celebration of the martin luther king holiday. monday night the president and first lady will attend the "let freedom ring" celebration at the kennedy center. this weekend the nation is celebrating the birthday of the late martin luther king jr. along with the area at the mlk memorial. hundreds turned out for a wreath laying ceremony to honor the civil rights leader on what would have been his 83rd birthday. among those in attendance, his

russian military officials say a failed probe has crashed showering debris over the southern pacific. it was one of the heaviest and most toxic pieces of space junk to crash to earth. they say most of the rocket fuel would have burned up in the atmosphere. >> you've got to look at the bright side. >> it's cold out there tonight. >> it's cold. it's been cold all weekend. we're very much below average. in fact, staying in the 30s for today and tonight we have some clearing skies and some very calm winds, and that means those temperatures are going down even more. right now we are looking pretty good. a great view from our michael & son weather camera.

the temperatures. winds for the most part have been out of the east about 5 miles per hour, but wind speeds are dropping. by later on overnight we could be calm to light, and that means very cold temperatures, starting you. most of the temperatures inside the beltway still in the middle 20s to upper 20s. however, we're already starting to see those lower 20s out. as we head into the early morning hours, here's how we look. for the short term, milder air is on the way. we're looking pretty good on monday and tuesday, but as we move into tuesday night and into wednesday, we're bringing back some more rain interest our forecast. for the short term, though. things will be milder on tuesday, yes, and as we go into

wednesday that cold really comes back with some force. tomorrow morning, in the teens outside the beltway with those light winds. that means cool conditions all around in the morning. so prepare yourself for that if you're getting out and about very early. we should be close to 18 degrees down. 20s closer to the bay and for annapolis. it's a great start to your monday morning. mainly. i even think early afternoon is going to be quite nice. around the 4:00 to 5:00 hour you are going to 0. i think we'll hold off on our rain opportunity throughout the daylight hours. but as we get into 10:00, 11:00 we'll start toe emp. there could be some pocket of
