friday. the conduct of the ship's captain is being questioned and is the focus of the investigation. 4200 people were on board. we now know this morning a sixth person was found dead. 16 others are still missing. including two americans. gerald and barbara hile of minnesota. their daughter says they had been looking forward to their vacation. >> my parents have always wanted to travel. and they sent them all to kids- private school throughout elementary to college. they never had any money. so they wanted to, when they retired, they went traveling and this was going to be a big deal. it was going to be a 16-day trip. so they were really excited about it. >> the captain is being held on suspicion of manslaughter. passengers said he abandoned ship before everyone else was evacuated. anna ma trang a has more. >> rescue teams used a helicopter to lift out a third survivor from a damaged luxury

cruise liner along the coast of italy. he was a crew member on the costa concordia who screamed for help while emergency workers checked the ship for survivors on sunday. divers found the bodies of two elderly men with their life vests still on. the cruise liner started to tip over on friday after it hit a rock causing a 160-foot hole in the hull. owners of the ship said in a statement on sunday, it appears the captain, francesco schettino made several mistakes. the captain denies he did anything wrong, saying. >> translator: the rocks were not marked on his map and the ship shouldn't have hit anything. >> there are questions about the evacuation process also. survivors say the rush to get on lifeboats friday night was chaotic. >> people were getting on them.

people were screaming, yelling, pushing. >> it's the nerve center of the rescue operations which continued night and day under dangerous conditions much that's because the ship could sink even laura and become splecomplete i submerged. >> the firefighters are preparing to board the ship. >> we'll keep working until we're sure that no one is alive. >> cbs news, giglio, italy. the republican presidential field, jon huntsman campaign announced he's withdrawing today and he'll endorse mitt romney. sar tara mergener has more. >> good morning, terrell. a campaign aide says huntsman is very proud of the race he ran, but it's time to get behind the person most likely to beat president obama. jon huntsman plans to drop out of the race. the former utah governor will

make it official in south carolina, nearly a week after he finished third in new hampshire's primary. >> i want to beat expectations like in nam shif. >> huntsman gave no sign he was planning to back out telling reporters it's too soon to predict how he will do. >> the land changes considerably. let not throw out too many conclusions yet. >> he always admitted expectations in south carolina were low. a recent poll showed him with only 4% support, putting him behind even stephen colbert. >> i'm doing it. >> but huntsman endorsement may not help romney where he needs it most, among social and evangelical conservatives. >> the people of south carolina, vote their conscience. >> rick santorum is going after that vote. he got a boost when a group decided to back him as a romney alternative. newt gingrich was their second choice ahead of rick perry. >> i ask you to think about the

d.c., partly sunny, 42 degrees. partly sunny and 55 in atlanta. afternoon showers and 40 in detroit. partly sunny skies, 44 in denver. mostly cloudy, 37 degrees in seattle. meers another look at the top stories. the search continues inside that capsized cruise ship off the coast of italy. at least six people are known to have died. 16 others, including two americans are missing. the ship's owners say there appears to be significant mistakes made by the captain. today jon huntsman is dropping out of the race for the republican nomination. huntsman plans to endorse mitt romney. there's a battle in south carolina over that state's controversial new voter i.d. laws. voters in nine states are already subject to these laws set to prevent voter fraud. critics say the laws place an unfair burden on young, low income and minority voters. jeff glor reports. >> it wasn't trekted at minorities.

it was direct at the process. >> senator larry martin sponsored south carolina's photo i.d. law, he says to protect the integrity of elections. >> i don't think you wait until there is a problem before you act. >> his stated goal, stopping voter fraud. >> i know we didn't intend for that to be discriminatory. >> attorney general eric holder says says it is discriminatory because black voters in south carolina are 20% more likely than white voters to lack a drivers license or state photo i.d. card. 73-year-old junior glover is one of them. he's voted for decades. but he doesn't have a birth certificate, which is required to get the new i.d. >> i want to still vote. right or wrong. >> critics say the i.d. law is a solution in search of a problem. >> voter fraud in south carolina is a rare instance much it is not rampant. >> conway has run election this is greenville county for 20

years. >> this is the voter registration list that is used. >> he says a typo or clerical error on a voting record is sometimes misconstrued as fraud. >> the election process in south carolina, at least appears to be extremely clean over the entire state. >> but state motor vehicle's director points out that 37,000 dead people are still on the state's voter registration list. and then he discovered this. >> at least 956 individuals voted after they were dead or more realistically, people voted using their name and/or credentials. >> he can't say where or when the potential impersonation may have occurred. he's passed the information along to state investigators. for now, the state's photo i.d. law won't apply in next week's presidential primary. it's on hold pending the justice department review. >> i certainly do not want it to be an impediment to anybody that

wishes to vote. we want to make sure that the folks who are who they say they are. >> attorney general holder is expected to address this at a rally in south carolina on monday. jeff glor, cbs news, new york. search operations continue in beirut lebanon following a deadly building collapse. it collapsed yesterday killing at least 11. most of them foreigners. residents say the shaking and pounding from a nearby construction site could have weakened the foundation of their building causing that collapse. and nome alaska is about to get much needed fuel. a tanker is within half a mile of the frozen city. they must drag a hose into town. to complicate matters, it can only be dumped during the day and nome only has about five hours of daylight at this time of year. they haven't had a fuel delivery snce november after a massive snowstorm. coming up later on "cbs this morning," we'll hear from survivors of the italian cruise ship disaster. i'm terrell brown. this is the "cbs morning news." ñ
