inside right here. >> it was a baby girl. the neighbor just saw the embill embillcal cord. >> they brought the baby inside their home and performed cpr as instructed by the 911 dispatcher. an ambulance and emt crew arrived and took over. the fire department transported the child to children's hospital and the infant was pronounced around 2:20 this morning. awaiting an autopsy. >> ian milne is shaken. the baby was found on his steps. >> it was another ten steps, a bang on the door, and i mean, my wife and i are in the process of an adoption right now and that's not public knowledge, now it is. but you know, we know so many

families who would love a child, any child, and it's heartbreaking. i don't know. we are pretty torn up about it. >> i think he speaks for the entire washington area. we talked to a number of neighbors here and they are at a loss. they don't know anybody who could have done this. they can't imagine what might have happened to that child being dumped here on these steps. police are asking for help tonight. they say anybody who knows of a woman or young girl who might have been pregnant and given birth and now all of a sudden there's no baby, they need to hear from you. right now they seem to be at a loss. anita and derek, back to you. >> d.c. does have a safe haven law, which allows anybody to drop off a child at a safe place, like a police station, a hospital, fire house, if they cannot care for that child. >> maryland and virginia have similar laws in place. derek. >> all right anita. police tonight are hinting at a mysterious second suspect in that one of a series of brutal

home invasions and sexual assaults. they have nabbed the maine guy. bruce leshan joins me here to tell us this man is a dangerous man. >> police call him possibly a sociopath. they say that he committed manslaughter 18 years ago and then as soon as he got out, he committed a third degree sexual offense. here he is on the maryland sex offender registry right there. now the montgomery county state's attorney says he wants to put this guy away with no chance of parole in these home invasions. >> a banged up kevin darnell ray arrested in north carolina after allegedly trying to flee the fugitive task force and now in jail in rockville. at police headquarters, recounted how detectives were someday and night to capture a

man whose violence just seemed to escalate. >> both police departments understood the threat and also the terror that was caused in the community and we worked around the clock to make sure that we could put an end to this and we have. >> strangely, ray's aunt came to the news conference looking for answers, but insisted the coldhearted home invader police are describing is not the nephew she knows. >> you know, what you had, you know what i'm saying? >> in temple hills, police say he bound six victims with zip ties. the youngest just seven years old. and he sexually assaulted one of them. in bethesda, he allegedly tied up a mother and son in the bedroom. took bank cards and pin numbers, and then went after the cleaning lady. >> and took the housekeeper into a bathroom and forced her

to commit oral sex and groped her. >> neighbors expressed concern for the victimized family and the housekeeper and relief that police had captured the suspect. >> we are very concerned about the family, the housekeeper, and the well being of the entire maplewood area. >> now in that attack in bethesda, police initially said that there were two suspects, then they corrected themselves later in the day and said there was just one suspect. today, they were back to two suspects so that makes you wonder what the heck is going on here? is this second guy talking and they don't want to talk about that. >> the other question, bruce, we've had that picture on the tv for the last several days. did someone from the public come forward to make this arrest happen? >> that's another of the many, many strange things in this case. because we repeatedly asked them if that's what happened. was there a tip? and they merely said, well the picture was what it was all about. they didn't say anything about there being a tip.

so again, once you back the second suspect is talking. >> story not over. bruce leshan, back to you. >> the serk search is on for an armed man. it happened outside the beauly wal-mart around 8:00 this morning. the two men took off in a white passenger van that was later found. fortunately no one was hurt. >> not as cold as yesterday and tomorrow is going to be even milder. we're going to have some rain to deal with. topper is on the terrace to talk about that. >> temperatures actually made it up to the 40-degree mark in some spots. let's start with temperatures. not much wind out here. 40 downtown, but still 37 in gaithersburg. 39 leesburg and manassas. even 43 over in oakland. southwest wind in the mountains before they'll warm up. satellite picture radar combined. we see rain and that is rain from columbus to pittsburgh to charleston. i know it's mid january. it's unusual, but that is rain

heading our way. in fact, before the forecast, we're looking at temperatures tonight above freezing in most spots, light rain before dawn, lows in the 30s and winds southwest 10 to 15. we'll come back and be some pockets of winter precipitation. we'll talk about where they will be and how wet it's going to be for the morning and evening commute. >> thank you topper. six people confirmed dead in 29 unaccounted for after that cruise ship disaster off the coast of italy. anna reports, rescue crews are looking for the missing, including a u.s. couple from minnesota. >> rescue crews worked into the night using flood lights to illuminate as they searched for more victims. the workers say they won't give up until they have been through the entire vessel. >> the feeling is to keep on working until we are sure. >> search teams are still looking for more than a dozen people, including an american couple from minnesota.

divers are entering the submerged parts of the boat while firefighters go cabin to cabin up top. rescue operations are based here, the teams work in six hour shifts because the work is so dangerous. >> the resting on its side and continues to shift. the ship started to tip over friday night when it hit a rock that tore a 160-foot hole in the hull. the cruise line says the captain miscalculated. >> we believe it has been a human error here. the captain did not follow the authorized route. >> he faces several charges, including manslaughter and abandoning ship. prosecutors said they jailed the captain because they were concerned there may be an attempt to tamper with evidence. there are also growing environmental concerns. crews are laying floating pipelines around the costa in case 500,000 gallons of fuel on

board starts to leak. cbs news, italy. >> the american embassy is asking for help in the search for the missing u.s. couple. they asked people to e-mail them if they have any information about their plans. 9news is with a local family who provides new insight into the captain at the center of the investigation. >> well on this martin luther king jr. day, people here in the d.c. area and all over the nation honor the slain civil rights area. president obama and the first family join other volunteers working at the brown education campus in northeast. the president helped to build book shelves and painted mlk quotes on the walls. speaking after at that school, the president said helping others is a fitting way to celebrate dr. king's life. >> there is nobody who can't serve. nobody who can't help somebody else. and whether you're seven or six

we have an update on that accused serial mall slasher. authorities still working to bring 40-year-old johnny back to fairfax county. he was arrested at a lima, peru mall over the weekend. he suspected of slashing nine young women on their backsides at malls in fairfax county last

year. police discovered him has returned to his home country of peru after they issued an arrest warrant in september. a young man who killed a little boy on sunday has been charged with dui manslaughter. >> 22-year-old victor has also been charged with maiming for injuring the boy's mother who was walking with her eight-year- old son when the car slammed into them. peggy fox has more from alexandria where the deadly crash happened. >> the boy was killed when walking with his mother on this sidewalk. the driver who hit him was going so fast that he jumped the curb about 30 feet back there. knocked out a sign post right here, hit the child, and kept on going. then he jumped that curb across that exit ramp, flew across this ditch, landed hard right here, but had enough momentum to take him another 100 yards. he barreled down the hill and into this electrical box destroying it. >> the cabinets are bolted into the concrete.

>> guardrail stopped him from landing on i-395 and killing anyone else. >> it's nerve racking because i have a four-year-old son. i can think of what the family must go through. accidents happen, you know, wonder why. >> alexandria police say 22- year-old victor aldana was drunk. he is charged with dui, manslaughter, dui maiming. reckless driving and no operator's license. the boy who was killed was brian hernandez chavez. his mother was injured and is in the hospital with nonlife threatening injuries. >> something so traumatic and i can't imagine what that would be like. my heart goes out to her completely. >> the sidewalks the boy and his mom were walking on runs on busy duke street. many residents walk on the path. >> i walk here all the time every day and i almost get kit by cars left and right.

this can be avoidable. >> in alexandria, peggy fox, 9news now. >> victor is a resident of the alexandria area of fairfax county. he's being held at the alexandria jail without bond. water safety campaigns appear to be paying off. today we learned that fewer children are going to hospitals for near drowning incidents. this is a new study and it sounds accidents in the u.s. fell 49% between 1993 and 2008. the number of kids who die by drowning decrease by 42%. researchers found a 40% drop in hospital visits following bathtub related drownings in infants and toddlers. now drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional injury and it counts for 1100 deaths in the united states each year. if you are in the market for a new job, you might want to get out your resume and head out to anne arundel county. the employment center is open for business in hanover.

looking to fill more than 1500 casino, marketing, security, and food and beverage positions. the employment center is open weekdays 10:00 to 7:00. the casino will get going this summer. topper joins us now with something for people who need a fix of snow. at least video of snow. >> it's about all we can do. we'll take you out of all places, seattle. doesn't snow that often. i mean it can, but they had a solid snow at sea level. it often snows in the cascades, but anywhere from 2 to 6 inches fell. you saw the car slide there. it was pretty slippery. temperatures in the upper 20s to below freezing and it came down fast and furious for a while. we'll come back and show you more snow in a half an hour. again, that's about all we got right now. we will look at our michael andson weather cam. beautiful shot. see some clouds coming in. we have clear skies, but clouds come in quickly tonight. right now 40. dew point 23. watching that carefully. it's beginning to come up as

more moisture rolls into the atmosphere. that will keep us from having any winter type precipitation problems. winds out of the south. that's going to drive up some milder air as well. satellite picture radar combined. we have this storm system, not particularly well organized, but you see the moisture through the deep south. it is all in the form of rain for the most part. it is unusual being january and talk about rain as far north as detroit and pittsburgh and buffalo. again, not particularly well organized. an overrunning wave that rolls in. a lot of this will evaporate. i think we'll stay dry through midnight and through most of the overnight hours in the immediate metro area. may see a period of sleet toward cumberland. tweeted about this earlier and north of frederick. it will be a short period. temperatures aren't going to get below freezing tonight. 38 right now in bethesda. 38 in arlington. 41 in college park.

you might think well wow, temperatures fell like a stone last night. it was clear and winds were calm. now we have clouds coming in that will trap the heat and strong southwesterly winds which will add milder air to the metro area. locate the umbrella. breezy and not as cold tonight. light rain possible by dawn. a brief morning mix is possible as well. but very far north and west of town. frederick north, hagerstown west. and much milder on tuesday. we'll make it into the 50s. here's a look at our future cast for tonight. i think that's over done. that's the first wave of precipitation that evaporates. but by 6:00, 7:00 in the morning, prepare for wet roads. light activity, but wet roads in the morning, never good. and by afternoon and evening, the system rolls out really fast. it's gone. rain lingers in parts of oakland and garrett county. that will turn into snow as colder air moves in. colder air is on tap for us wednesday and thursday. increasing cloudiness. light rain before dawn. lows in the 30s.

by morning, that's going to be the bulk of which the rain falls. light rain and showers, 30s and 40s. by afternoon, not bad. mostly cloudy, but breezy and milder. shower possible. high temperatures near 55. pretty nice day for january. all right, next seven days. looks like this. we will turn cold again on wednesday with temperatures back into the 30s. on thursday, clouds increase. we might see a flurry or a snow shower. temperatures only in the low to mid 30s and then it stays cold for a couple of days and look what happens. looking at light rain or snow on saturday and back in the 50s. low 50s on sunday and 53 on monday. so snow lovers, i got nothing good for you looking down the road. we may go through the rest of january with our half inch of snow as the total. >> thanks top. >> still ahead, does this weekend's cruise ship disaster have you rethinking those vacation plans? well we'll hear from some of

eating too much bacon, sausage, and cold cuts could increase your chance of getting pancreatic cancer. studies involving more than 2 million people and of those, 7,000 develop pancreatic cancer. again, is this a rare cancer, but results show that simply eating processed meats once a day could increase someone's risk by nearly 20%. researchers also said that some of the studies didn't include for other possible risk factors. an estimated 220,000 americans have weight loss surgery every year. that's double the number a decade ago. there's no question these operations can change lives. there are two common procedures these days and new research finds one may work better than the other. >> linette decided it was time to have weight loss surgery. >> i was so heavy when i go to

the doctor. no scale will be able to tell me my weight. >> she chose gastric banding. the doctor put a band around the person's stomach. she thought banding was the safest option, but three years later after complaining to her doctor, she had the band removed. >> i told her, what is going on? you know, i'm not losing any weight. i'm gaining weight. >> her experience is not uncommon. nearly half of patients who choose gastric banding were still obese after six years. that's according to a brand-new study in the archives of surgery. patients had more long-term complications and followup operations than those who had gastric bypass in which doctors use staples to create a smaller stomach pouch. >> when we remove part of the stomach, we change the hormones that control the hunger and fullness. and we really change people's

relationship with food. >> she regrets using the gastric band. >> it was an experience i learned from, but it was a big mistake. >> what ended up happening? she went back and got the gastric bypass and has since shed 77-pounds. now overall, this study found people who had the gastric bypass lost weight quicker and able to keep it off longer. but the study did find the risk of a deadly complication was greater with the gastric bypass versus getting the banding. clearly, lots of benefits versus risks to factor and talk to your doctor. thanks anita. the republican presidential field is now down to just five. >> that's right, jon huntsman dropped out of the race today after polling in the low single digits in south carolina. find out who he is throwing his support behind straight ahead. and still ahead, hear how a fire dispatcher during his first day on the job dealt with the first riots in des moines

unaccounted for three days after the ship crashed into a reef off the tuscan coast and capsized. at least two americans are among the missing. six people are confirmed dead. the chairman and ceo of the cruise line says the captain made an unauthorized change of course. the ship caused the -- abandoning the ship and causing a ship wreck. now the big question for you is, would you be willing to cruise now? >> scott broom tops a local passengers today as a 2700 passenger ship made its regular call on the port of baltimore today. >> royal caribbeans of the seas. >> it was fun. >> just back to baltimore today from nine days out to the bahamas and back. >> i have a blast. it was amazing. >> a great trip even though the buzz on board this ship included lots of chatter about the disaster. >> are we really safe on these

>> tonight's debate will be the first of two debates among the republicans. the second will be thursday night in charleston. south carolina vehicle coders head to the polls this weekend. after a three-week holiday recess, congress gets back to work this week and their agenda looks familiar. the lawmakers will be debating whether or not to extend the payroll tax cut. at issue, how to do that without adding to the deficit. mustn't republican proposals, cutting benefits. among the democrat ideas raising fees for airline passengers and eliminating saturday mail delivery. >> as many as 24 people are dead and dozens more are feared trapped. authorities say the five story structure was constructed in the 60s and was home to about ten families. right now, crews are working around the clock with heavy equipment and sniffer dogs trying to look for anybody trapped underneath. >> a fire at the mosque in central asia left a person dead. it's located and under construction at the time of the

fire. about 200 firefighters were called in. the mosque features traditional ornaments, other decorations and houses prayer rooms, areas for washing. investigators think welding equipment sparked a fire. a townhouse in new york is in ruins tonight after a big gas explosion. the blast occurred around noon in the town of west haverstraw. two firefighters were seriously hurt. no one was inside at the time. a road construction crew ruptured a gas main near the property and the gas got into the sue sewage system. as many as 100 houses had to be evacuated. and it was a busy morning for firefighters in boston after flames broke out. several latter trucks had to be brought in as crews working to put the fire out and one woman had to go to the hospital where she is being treated for smoke inhalation. no word on what sparked those flames. and a tree that stood from central florida for 3500 years

the new year u usually starts off with lower gas prices, but not this new year. gas and crude prices are at historic highs according to aaa. the national average for a gallon of regular rose 4 cents a gallon. that's up 11 cents for the month. analysts attribute the gas increase to tensions over iran's nuclear program. in virginia, a gallon of regular goes for $3.31. pay $3.39 for regular in maryland while in d.c., the

price is $3.53. bmw is recalling more than 88,000mini coopers. models made from 2007 through 2011. the cars electronic water pump and apparently malfunctioned, overheat, and cause fires. mote phi owners and replace the pump for free. >> well, there's lots of talk tonight that the next generation of apple tablet will go on sale in march. the ipad 3 is reported to have a high def screen, and a ship that will allow users to move more quickly between apps. and speak of apple, the mac book outsold personal computers. sales for personal computers fell 4% in 2011. hewlett-packard, dell, and toshiba saw a drop. acer had the biggest decline with more than 11%. wondering where you can find those delicious girl scout cookies? this should surprise nobody. there's now an app for that.

hundreds of people filled the ebenezer backuptist church celebrating the martin luther king holiday. there were dignitaries as well as religious and business leaders. set the stage for the first african american president decades later. >> just a few hours ago, the national cathedral hosted this, a news call tribute to dr. king. featuring a presentation of what was called king in our mist. it was a celebration of service, song, and the spoken word. the cathedral hosted a concert featuring the malcolm x dancers. king delivered his last sunday sermon at the national cathedral. >> martin luther king, jr.'s

homeless. when you're a young person or a single parent with a little child, there are additional pressures to be sure. the latin american youth center offers some much needed lifelines. in today's hero central report,jc hayward visited hope house. >> if you ever in an argument with someone, i promise if you take time and listen to what they are saying. >> on thursday, the hope house offers life skills training for participants. the nonprofit's goal is to provide a transitional living program for people 18 to 24 years old. >> they have the chance to come into hope house and just transitional housing to have a safe place to live with their children. and to be able to learn parenting skills and life skills and sort of obtain employment and sort of get to the place where they can live safely and independently on their own. >> according to the national center on family homelessness, between the year of 2009 and 2010, there were four times as

many homeless children in washington, d.c. what that means is that programs such as hope house are vitally important to the city. >> 22-year-old santos is a graduate of the program. when she came to hope house with her young daughter, she was given a brighter future. >> when i have my baby, i wasn't employed and now when i came to apply, they helped me look for a job. because they help you looking for jobs and they help me, you know, be in school, not drop out of school. >> santos is living on her own, attending udc, and plans to be a doctor. >> my dream is to graduate school and become a pediatrician and also help many kids. because there are many kids out there that don't have help. >> hope house opens its doors to all young adults who demonstrate that with guidance, they will be able to live independently. >> we simply sort of provide
