the search for survivors was temporarily suspended this morning when the ship started to move. at least 11 people are known to have died in the tragedy. some 20 others are missing, including an american couple from minnesota. dramatic and disturbing reporting show the captain left the ship as frantic passengers tried to escape. an outraged coast guard officers orders schettino to return to the costa concordia, but he never does. >> the recordings played throughout the day on italian television. the coast guard commander orders the captain of the costa concordia to return to the capsized ship he had abandoned. climb the ladder and board the ship the coast guard officer orders, get on board and report to me how many people are there. all right. i'm going says the tap can. tell me if there are children

and women and what help they need. you may have saved yourself from the sea but i will make you pay for it. go back on board. are you aware that it's dark, says the captain? and what do you want the coast guard officer wants. it's dark and you want to go home? get on the bow and tell me what can be done. despite the orders, captain schettino never returned to the ship. prosecutors are expected to file criminal charges against him by the end of the week. while in custody, the authorities took hair and urine samples to determine if schettino was under the influence of drugs or alcohol. meanwhile, a dutch salvage company is in the early stages of removing the ship from the coastline. the firm will start by pumping out the 500,000 gallons of fuel aboard the ship. a company official says the tanks appear in intact and no fuel has leaked out. but there is concern that leaking fuel could cause an environmental disaster. the wreckage site is located in a sanctuary for marine mammals.

the economic impact of the disaster could be far-reaching. insurance analysts estimate claims could total up to as much as a billion dollars. carnival cruise lines which owns the ship saw its stock price fall nearly 14% yesterday. now, to what has the potential to be a major winter storm that is hitting the pacific northwest. an area better known for rain than snow. winter storm warnings are posted for most of washington and oregon and seattle, which could see up to a foot of snow. residents are urged to stay off the roads. school is canceled in many districts today. wet, heavy snow has been coming down throughout the night and the roads are already treacherous. >> all kinds of conditions. ice, cold, frozen. people sliding all over the place. it's pretty bad out there. >> the highest snowfall totals are expected today. road closures are expected. recovery operations are

under way in the ohio valley after at least three unusual winter tornadoes touched down. the first slammed into the louisville area damaging several buildings yesterday. later, another hit southern mississippi injuring at least two people. the third twister struck southeast indiana. occupy protesters were back at it last night in front of the white house. a brief lockdown was ordered when someone threw an apparent smoke bomb over the fence. on darkened pennsylvania avenue, capitol police disburse the crowd without making arrests. the president and first lady weren't home. they were at a restaurant celebrating mrs. obama's 40th birthday. protest terse rallied to condemn corporate money in congress. tafs mostly peaceful but some confrontations with police. at least four were arrested. now to campaign 2012. mitt romney's opponents stepped up their attacks in an almost go

for broke effort to derail his campaign. with just three days before the south carolina primary, romney disclosed some information about his taxes. terrell brown is from washing with that. >> betty good morning to you. we're in the final days now before the south carolina primary. those heated jabs are already flying and that tax record issue that mitt romney is facing could be a very serious image problem. mitt romney's personal income taxes have become the latest joke on the campaign trail. >> we're now calling my 15% flat tax the mitt romney flat tax. >> in south carolina tuesday, newt gingrich poked fun after the gop front-runner admitted he pays less taxes than most americans. >> it's probably closer to the 15% rate. >> romney, whose estimated worth is $270 million says his income is mostly from investments which are taxed well below the 35% the nation's top earners pay. romney hold a comfortable lead in south carolina ahead of the primary saturday.

that isn't stopping the other contenders from trying to push each other aside. >> consolidating into a gingrich candidacy would guarantee victory on saturday. >> gingrich wants santorum and perry to drop out of race the but santorum says the former house speaker should be the one to back down. >> you have newt who is bold but all over the place. attacking capitalism, supporting capitalism. >> perry isn't giving in either. >> rick santorum is a good man, good father, good catholic, but he hasn't always been a good conservative. >> a romney alternative might not be the gop's best bet. most polls show romney the republican most likely to beat president obama. ron paul is taking the day off. he'll be here on capitol hill on a vote whether to raise the nation's debt ceiling. he'll be back on the campaign trail tomorrow. betty in. >> terrell brown in washington for us. thank you. the final certified results from the iowa caucuses are expected by the end of the week.

mitt romney was initially declared the winner over rick santorum but just eight votes. but iowa republican leaders say some typos have been discovered that could give santorum some more votes and show he actually won. there will be changes at this year's democratic national convention. the convention is being held in charlotte, north carolina, beginning tuesday, september 4th. but the convention will last three days instead of the usual four and president obama will deliver his acceptance speech outdoors at the bank of america stadium. in wisconsin, governor scott walker will face a recall election. walker's opponent collected one million signatures, twice as many as needed to force the recall. the recall effort was led by labor activists. walker introduced legislation that ended collective bargaining rights for nearly all public workers. coming up on the morning news, a grim economic outlook

free speech online. google remains in operation but its main page shows a black rectangle with a line reading, tell congress please don't censor the web. wikipedia takes it further by shutting down the english language version of the online encyclopedia for one day. on the money watch, a surprise resignation atiyah hoo and burger king tries delivering. i like the sound of that. good morning, ashley. >> good morning, betty. overseas trading, another rally in asia. tokyo's nikkei had the highest finish, rising 1% and hang seng added a fraction. wall street investors will get reports from e-bay and goldman sachs today. on tuesday the dow added 60 points while the nasdaq gained 17. the world bank is warning of a global economic slowdown. the bank lowered its economic growth forecast for 2012 by more

than 1%. the forecast says worldwide growth is being negatively impacted by a recession in europe and economic slump in developing countries. kraft foods is preparing to cut 1600 people from the workforce. the illinois-based food maker says the layoffs are due to a companywide restructuring plan. the cuts will affect sales, business units. none of the manufacturing facility will be affected. one of yahoo's co-founders is leaving the company. he resigned from the company's board of directors. yang upset shareholders in 2008 when he turned down a $47.5 billion offer to sell the company to microsoft. and if you like your fast food really, really fast, listen to this. burger king is testing out a new delivery option at some of its washington, d.c. area restaurants. for a $2 fee, customers can get their burgers and fries delivered to their home or

a look at the weather this some cities around the country. new york, partly cloudy -- partly sunny too. windy, though. 48 degrees. miami partly sunny, 9. chicago partly sunny, 28. dallas, sunny, 53. and l.a. 66. time now for a check of the national forecast. a major storm is in the progress in northwest. a foot of snow likely in seattle. heavy rain will fall on oregon and northern california with strong winds from oregon to wyoming. bitter cold is moving into the northern plains. rain will diminish from the carolinas down to northern florida. in sports, a tale of two nba games in miami. the heat played without the injured dwyane wade. first it was all san antonio by a half court buzzer beater gives the spurs a lead at the half. but in the third quarters, they took over. lebron james hit a series of three-pointers. he had 33 point for the night. chris bosh added 30.

effective treatment for alzheimer's disease by 2025. 5.4 million americans now suffer from alzheimer's. a number that grows as the population ages. dr. john lapook has been following a struggle with the disease. >> carol kale i is 68 years old and suffering from advanced alzheimer's. her husband mike is a retired new york city cop working at a local library. every day he brings carol to work because he can't leave her alone. >> she just doesn't have the ability anymore to function independently. and she has to depend on me. >> when we first met mike and carol in 2008, she was starting an experimental drug. >> let me ask you a question. how old are you? >> 65. yeah. >> when we visited her nearly two years later, it was clear the therapy had failed. >> how old are you? >> how old am i?

>> how old? >> 80. no. i don't know. >> this afternoon, how old are you? >> i don't know. >> the cruel fact is alzheimer's patients don't get better. in washington, government advisers tried to set priorities for a national campaign to treat and manage the disease that is projected to cost more than a trillion dollars by 2050. but the plan doesn't include any funding. the daileys have been married for almost 48 years. he's frustrated by the lack of progress but isn't ready to let go. >> it's very difficult. i can't lose her. i pray to god that she goes before me. >> a top priority will be arming doctors with tools to recognize symptoms early. the idea is to go after prevention like with heart disease. if you wait until somebody has had five heart attacks before giving them lipitor it may be

way too late. the same thing may be true with alzheimer's disease. if you give the medications early, maybe some of the drugs that seem ineffective will end up helping patients now. dr. john lapook, cbs news, new york. in other health news, a new report shows progress against obesity has stalled. the centers for disease control says in 2010 a third of american adults 78 million were obese. so were 17% of children. nearly 13 million. both were about at the same levels as they were in 2003. chef paula deen who is famous for her butter-laden dishes is under fire after revealing she has diabetes. she announced yesterday she was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes three years ago. dean says she's a spokesperson for diabetes drugs. critics say she knowingly pushed fattening recipes while struggling with her diabetes. it's not clear if deen plans to make her recipes more health

midnight. can you believe that? we've got a cold front pushing through right now. it will be breezy conditions. and temperatures will be dropping this morning 40s and 30s but yeah, if you're stepping outside right now, it does feel fairly mild. expecting lots of sunshine for today. gusty conditions. temperatures though only in the lower 40s compared to yesterday's afternoon temperatures that got the upper 50s. check out the wind gusts right now. out of the northwest here in d.c. 31 miles per hour. in gaithersburg, 22. andrews air force base, 29. manassas, 25. so, as this cold front pushes through, we'llton see the breezy conditions through much of today. right now, temperatures though, it does feel mild out there. 47 in downtown. 45 in manassas. leesburg, 43. winchester, lower 40s. luray also at 40 degrees. now, highs for today will probably get to around the low 40s but then we won't be

be aware of that as you head out of town. otherwise, no big deals to report on the toll road or 66. we'll take a live look into springfield on the northbound side of 95. still looking very good from route 644 to the beltway. a live look as well, 395 at duke street, looks like things are doing well between the beltway and the 14th street bridge, no problems to report here as well. coming up in my next report, we'll go into maryland at 4:39. back to you guys. >> thank you, monika. >> republican presidential candidates are continuing their assault on front-runner mitt romney. rick santorum will begin airing a new attack ad in south carolina today. >> yesterday, gingrich called romney's private equity firm exploitive. bigad shaban has more. >> mitt romney's personal income taxes are the talk on the campaign trail. on tuesday, romney, a multi- millionaire admitted he pays less than half the 35% tax rate of the nation's top wage earners. >> the effective rate i've been paying closer to the 15% rate.
