what does this mean for the other gop hopefuls, especially mitt romney who had this thing won a few days ago. danielle nottingham. >> reporter: when mitt romney took the stage tonight, he was full of energy and optimism and says he's now looking ahead to the next primary. cbs news projects newt gingrich as the winner of the south carolina primary. the former house speaker staged a comeback to beat mitt romney who came in second. >> let me first of all say thankyou to everyone in south carolina who decided to be with us in changing things. >> reporter: romney promised his supporters a victory in florida which has its primary in three days. >> we're now three contests into a long primary season. this is a hard fight because there's so much worth fighting

for. >> reporter: gingrich won big with last-minute voters. 45% voted for gingrich who voted last minute. a gingrich victory in south carolina means none of the candidates has won more than one state. iowa was awarded to rick santorum this week and new hampshire went to mitt romney. rick santorum and ron hall finished at the back of the back but are vowing to fight on. >> there's no doubt in my mind a momentum has been continuing and will continue. thank you very much. >> let me assure you, we will go to florida and then we're going to arizona and colorado. >> reporter: florida holds its first debate monday night. rick santorum says it was just a hiccup tonight in his campaign and insists this race is still wide-open. live in columbia, south

carolina, danielle nottingham, cbs news. back to you. >> as you've already pointed out, not that long ago, south carolina appeared to be in the win column for romney. is there concern in his camp? any kind of panic at this point? >> reporter: not at all. you couldn't even tell mitt romney was the loser tonight when he took the stage. he was very optimistic about the future. he promised his supporters that they would have a great showingin florida and he did the same thing we have seen him do since the beginning of the campaign. he started taking shots at president obama and really placed himself as a better alternative to lead the country than president obama. so mitt romney in no way is feeling down about this loss. he's looking ahead to florida. and he really feels like he can take this nomination, bruce. >> thanks a lot for that report. a vigil tonight at the joe paterno statue outside beaver stadium at penn state college because multiple reports say

his health has taken a turn for the worse. some reports say paterno has been taken off a respirator and family members have been summonsed to his bedside. dave owens is here to begin our coverage. >> we've seen a lot of twists and turns in this story. at 9:00, reports began spreading that the former penn state coach was dead. then a family spokesperson as well as paterno's son responded saying that was false. scott paterno tweeted that his father was alive but in serious, serious and grave condition. paterno has been battling lung cancer. the diagnosis revealed just nine days after he was fired by penn state in the wake of a sexual abuse scandal involving jerry sandusky. paterno has been in and out of the hospital but recently returned after complications arose from chemotherapy treatments. earlier today family, close friends and former staff members were summonsed to the medical center where paterno is undergoing treatment. of course, the scandal has been the story the last few months.

let's not forget how large a figure joe paterno is when it comes to football. he became the head coach in 1966. he had been an assistant from 1950 through 1965. he's the only division one coach to win 51 victories. he was fired amid the sexual abuse scandal november 9th. last week, paterno sat down with the washington post and was very candid about his actions in the wake of discovering what his former assistant allegedly did. sally jenkins did a great story with that interview. >> thanks a lot for that. grads spent the day raising money for an organization that helps victims of sexual assault. she heard about paterno's declining health and shared their thoughts with our lindsey mastis. >> on and off the field he's been a true leader for penn state university. >> reporter: this group of

grads ended up at rumors downtown to celebrate, but then long time penn state coach joe paterno was taken off life support. >> as soon as this group found out about the news, the mood changed and some are so upset and so sad. they said they couldn't speak on camera. >> my friends and i just really kind of remember him and the good things about him and then after that, we just decided that we celebrate the penn staters together. >> the news is grim. the paterno's family says he's hanging on. >> his family and friends are at the hospital saying goodbye to him. it's really sad, but hopefully he gets to say goodbye to all of his friends and family. >> the recent sex abuse scandal involves paterno. despite the controversy, grads say they hope in the end paterno was remembered in a positive light. >> there's no doubt in penn staters minds and our minds that, you know, joe has done amazing things for the university, aside from everything going on and all the

facts have yet to come out. we're still like everybody else, following along and waiting to see what happens. but i mean, joe paterno's legacy for us and for the school, period, is that he donated so much of his time and money, and his life, 60 years worth, to penn state. >> reporter: in washington, i'm lindsey mastis, 9 news now. >> we're going to have more on joe paterno's condition coming up later in sports. temperatures dropping below the freezing mark tonight. will that make for slippery conditions outside? what about monday? let's go to olga breeze in the weather center. >> we definitely are getting our dose of winter this weekend. temperatures very, very cold. we stayed in the 30s for our highs, we're sliding back down into the upper 20s. most of us will remain very, very cold during the overnight period. but with clearing skies, that means we could see refreezing on these roadways as we head

into the early morning hours. partial clearing, so lots of sunshine tomorrow morning as temperatures move out of the 20s and back into the 30s. we will continue with this cold spell for the foreseeable end to our weekend. then futurecast is bringing in some wintery precipitation. you'll see a little bit of that pink and a tiny bit of that blue start to slide in as early as tomorrow afternoon and that means things could get a little messy by late night tomorrow and maybe even still into our monday morning. i'll have details on that full seven-day forecast in a few minutes. >> thanks, olga. sibley hospital confirms tonight that d.c. councilman marion barry has been released following minor surgery. his staff said was a procedure involving the urinary tract. the 75-year-old barry is seeking a third consecutive term as the ward 8 representative to the d.c. council. he's a four term mayor of d.c. all those in favor of the motion that's on the floor,

please say aye. those that oppose, nay. motion carries. >> with that vote a controversial plan to redevelop alexandria's waterfront gets a nod of approval from the city council. the plan would put boutique hotels, shops and restaurants along the blightest areas of the waterfront. alexandria mayor says tonight's vote is only the first step. now residents and city officials will need to work together to come up with a detailed plan that works for residents and the city's economy. some residents oppose commercialization of the area and they were on hand at today's hearing. >> when there is an alternative that we've been pushing for arts and history and that that be the emphasis of our waterfront, along with parks. >> it has a potential economic value to the town, but we think the city has gone the very short-term route. it ceded control of all development to all developers. >> they estimate the project will take 15 years to complete.

divers off the coast of italy recovered another body from the wreckage of a sunken cruise ship, and she was wearing a life jacket and on the fifth deck. that area is where passengers would have congregated to be assigned to lifeboats. today's recovery leaves 20 passengers still missing. italian authorities say finding them remains a top priority. >> we keep searching until our rescue team says okay. >> they also recovered a hard drive from the ship's bridge. they're hoping it will demonstrate how the captain reacted during the emergency. the coast guard is trying to contain fuel that began leaking from the ship. they're using sensors to monitor the ship's every move amid fears that any shift could pose a danger to divers and

cause it to slide into much deeper water. cody is home tonight. the 3-year-old dog went missing when somebody stole the family's suv with the dog inside. the rileys were devastated but put word out on twitter and facebook and the efforts paid off today. >> we stopped at a gas station and we ended up putting a flier last saturday. and this young fellow called and said he thought that they had our dog. >> i would just like to tell everybody that please don't leave your dogs in the car unattended because we've learned the hard way, and i found out from a rescue person that a lot of dogs have been stolen by people tying their dogs up at starbucks on a chain while they're in there having coffee or at different outside cafes where people are just going by cutting the leash and taking the dogs. >> great advice. don't leave the dog anywhere unattended.

reports tonight of another hollywood breakup. the entertainment website tmz is reporting the super model heidi klum plans to file for divorce from her husband seal sometime this week. tmz says klum plans to cite irreconcilable differences. the couple was married in 2005. they have three children together. seal also adopted klum's daughter from a previous relationship. last weekend klum attended the golden globe awards without her husband. you can hear it in the news room in the studio. wow, i thought they would make it. this would be one, i guess not. you want to weigh in on this? >> i think i would like to talk about the weather. >> okay. serious weather out there, too. yeah, it is. we had all of that wintery dust come on through, just enough to wake us up and remind us it is

january. it is winter and we've gotten off far too easy all winter long. tonight, it's been a cold weekend overall. down into the 30s for our highs today. we're still going to see 30s for highs tomorrow. the good news is our cloudy skies overnight will start to clear, meaning a fairly nice start to your sunday morning if you get up and out early, things won't be too bad. looking at our michael and son weather camera, a view of the capital, not a bad one. we will see those temperatures drop into the 20s as we head into the early morning hours. now, winds have been fairly light out of the northeast. we're going to continue to pull in about 10 to 15 miles per hour winds as we head into the overnight. that means that things are going to be calming down for us in and around the beltway. so the numbers we're looking at right now into the 20s from about arlington up toward bethesda, still holding on to 32 for college park. these numbers are going to slide down into the 20s for the early morning. so keep that in mind as you get out and about. the weekend, yes. stays cold, only 30s for

tomorrow's high, but with that moisture on the ground, some areas weren't completely treated or plowed. those areas will refreeze early on in the morning. take your sunglasses as you head-on out. we'll have plenty of sunshine to start you off. we could see wintery precipitation towards sunset tomorrow afternoon. partly cloudy and clear overnight tonight means the temperatures will have the opportunity to clear out, to get into the 20s, but with the wind out of the northeast, it's going to feel a little bit cooler than that. i'm forecasting about 28 degrees for the overnight low at reagan national airport. we'll see 21 as we head off toward leesburg. some of those northern locations could even see the teens. again there will be some of those pockets of that refreezing to contend with. futurecast is bringing in some of the wintery stuff. i've already pushed this forward into tomorrow afternoon when we see the clouds move on through. the moisture is coming in from the south and off toward the west. it's going to stream in a little bit closer toward the beltway. as we head into the early

afternoon, some forecast models are even bringing it a little bit of snowy precipitation off to some of those northern zones. northern portions of montgomery county and up toward the maryland/pennsylvania border. it could messy for us this time tomorrow. the good news is the forecast overnight tomorrow night is actually going to be creeping up temperaturewise. we'll eventually transition around about midnight and in toward early monday morning to mostly rain and then all rain throughout much of the day on our monday and we could see pockets of heavy rainfall monday afternoon as well. so the next two days, a little bit tricky for us, especially the afternoon and evening. mostly clear and cold heading into sunday morning. a pretty decent afternoon early on before that wintery mix starts to move on in late in the day and in towards sunset. highs tomorrow into the 30s. let's take a look at that seven- day forecast. and here's how it's going to be looking for us. a cold weekend indeed, but things will get a little bit worse before they get weather.

the wintery mix for us on sunday night into monday morning. then the rain most of the day on monday. but hang in there. by tuesday, we have pretty milder conditions as we get back into those lower 50s. however, we will bring back rain later on in the week. >> lower 50s. that's more like it. >> yeah, a little bit better. >> all right, olga, thanks a lot. in downtown washington today, more than 600 veterans took part in winter havens stand down. the annual event sponsored by the d.c. d.a. medical center. it included more than 70 medical organizations that assist veterans. they were given medical screenings, employment and financial resources were available to help keep more vets from ending up on the streets. >> we're moving in the v.a. to prevention. one of the things we're doing specifically here at the d.c. medical center is our community resource referral center that will come online in april at 1500 franklin northwest. it will be a send-down, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

if there is such a thing as the mount rushmore of college football coaches, penn state's joe paterno would be on it. rim glasses, white sox, black shoes. most saturdays he led the lions out of the tunnel. the last few health and scandal have impeded that. paterno has been undergoing treatment for lung cancer. today a family spokesperson said the situation is serious. the cancer diagnosis coming nine days after he was fired in the wake of the jerry sandusky

sexual abuse scandal. last week, paterno sat down with sally jenkins from the washington post and explains why his response to those allegations weren't more forceful. >> you know, i called my superiors and said, hey, we've got a problem, i think. would you guys look into it? because i didn't know, you know, i had never had to deal with something like that. >> now, a paterno family spokesperson released this statement earlier today. over the last few days, joe paterno has experienced further health complications. his doctors have characterized his condition as serious. his family will have no further comment and asks for privacy. as we said before, there have been several conflicting reports tonight about his health, including an earlier report which says he was dead. paterno's family has denied that report. we will continue to keep you updated as information comes in. let's switch gears now to some football, which we were meaning to talk about earlier today, as our first story.
