i'm terrell brown. the suddenly up for grabs race for the republican nomination is centered in florida this morning on the heels of newt gingrich's stunning upset. they hold the first of two debates in florida. romney holds a slight lead. more than 1100 needed to claim the gop nomination. florida will be a prize. there are 50 delegates up for grashs in the sunshine state. it's a winner take all contest. tara mergener is in washington with more. good morning rg terrell. gingrich's comeback has raised the stakes. the battle in florida will likely be grueling. mitt romney is in florida and wasting no time attacking newt gingrich. >> he has proven he's -- >> rom nil lost big in south carolina's primary. he's reminding voters about the ethics charges he faced while speaker of the house. >> he had to resign in disgrace. i don't know whether you knew

that. he resigned after four years. >> gingrich says his experience in washington makes him the better candidate. >> governor romney may be running for see owe. i'm running for president. president of the united states has to understand the government of the united states. barack obama clearly didn't and i doubt if governor romney would. >> the attacks are only expected to get worse as we get closer to january 31st. tonight the four remaining candidates will face off in another debate. ron paul will be at the debate, but will not campaign in florida. he plans to spend time in smaller states where expects to be more competitive. rick santorum vows to stay in the race. >> when it comes to money santorum and the other candidates fall short of romney who has the largest and best furnded campaign. gingrich is hoping his latest win will convince supporters to open their wallets.

mourning joe paterno this morning. the winningest coach in major college football, died yesterday of lung cancer. he was head coach of penn state for 46 years. his career came to a shocking end when a former assistant coach was a cued of molesting young guys. manuel gallon goes reports. >> remembering the man they call joe pa. the celebration then moved to joe paterno's statute outside the football stadium where a memorial is growing. the legendary coach died suchb fr sunday from complications of lung cancer. >> the soul of what it's about. >> his family issued a statement saying he was devoted to his family, his university, his players and community his career came to an end in his 46th season. he was fired over how he handled the child molestation allegations surrounding jerry

sac sachb san his former sis tachbt coach. he talked to the washington post about getting fired and being diagnosed with cancer within weeks of each other. >> good lord has a reason. i'm not concerned about me. 17 great grandchildren, five great kids. >> joe paterno was aware of it. his soften tweeted that his father was inspired by the outpouring of love and support. >> people will remember what a great man he was and what he did for this university. >> paterno coached, went on to the nfl. even stew dechbts who were not athletes looked up to hichl. >> like a father figure, a role model. >> it leaves a void that will never shall filled.

manu man. this is a sad day. he preached toughness, hard work and clean competition. he practiced what he preached. nobody will take away the memories we shared of a great marn. his family and all the wonderful people who were a part of his life. turbulence rocked an american airlines jet. flight 980 in route from brazil to miami. it landed safely in miami last night. passengers say there was a huge sudden drop. >> went all the way up. made a huge hole in the area. one of of them was thrown up in the air and landed in the hallway. the other woman, she hit the ceiling. when she came down the cart hit us. there were 136 passengers. the injured crew were taken to hoc hochts for treatment. gabrielle giffords is resigning to focus on her

recovery from a gunshot wound. today as part of her official act, she'll finish the meet and greet that ended more than a year ago when the gunman opened fire. eye necessary if he ray has more. >> the congresswoman who survived a bullet to the head just over a year ago is stepping down. >> i have more work to do on my recovery. so to do what is best for arizona, i will step down this week. >> giffords' recovery is seen as a miracle. she was wounded along with 16 others in a teu soften shooting spree that left six people dead. since then, she's been going through intense rehabilitation. two weeks ago, the congresswoman, along with family members and friends, held a memorial service to mark the first anniversary of that tragic day. >> one nation, under god. >> her friends and supporters are encouraged by her strength.

open at 11:00 this morning. >> in virginia, let's talk schools now. alexandria city is on a two hour delay. prince william county on a two hour delay. >> jefferson county schools a two hour delay along with berkeley and morgan county schools. >> let's also go now to howard bernstein with a check of your weather first. howard? >> watching a severe weather threat in the form of some freezing drizzle, light freezing rain. we still have plenty of slick spots. the temperature in town is 33. we'll be up to 39 by 9:00. the freezing threat will abate by 9:00. temperatures by 5:00 will be nearer to 50. our freezing rain advisory, everybody in pink from southern maryland except for st. mary's county north and west. in the immediate metro, that goes until 6:00 a.m. but that may be dropped a little earlier because temperatures are already up to

38 in luray. 34 winchester and culpepper. problems with subfreezing temps in la plata and andrews. upper 20s in loudoun counties. from my own neighborhood, some of the side roads, very slippery. the main roads seem to be ok. as far as any precip, we're in pretty good shape. live doppler 9000 hd not picking up any precip, fog is a bigger problem over the next few hours. half-mile visibility from warrenton and culpepper. quarter mile up in gaithersburg up toward westminster. west of town is where we have the bigger problem with the fog. rain and milder temperatures moving in later this morning into the afternoon. here's monika samtani with your timesaver traffic. >> it will be the dense fog in parts of the area. if you're planning to head up 95 in virginia, that's ok at the occoquan river. let's go up north first from baltimore. an accident right here in calverton near route 212. it was cleared out of the

roadway but it left slow traffic in that area on the southbound side of i-95 leaving 212. the beltway is moving well between 95 and silver spring. let's take a live look in college park. it will be that fog that you're going to have to deal with this morning as we head out the door. lanes are open on the outer loop here. we'll go down to the maps again over into virginia. now, everything's moving at speed as you can see inside the beltway. 66, 395, heavy with fog and an accident northbound on i-95 near the acquire harbor. we're getting word that it is slow out of gainesville. here in centreville, light volume. the fog to deal with. same story from germantown. i'll have that coming up in my next report. >> the republican presidential focus now turns to florida. newt gingrich is looking to build on his win in south carolina. >> while mitt romney says he'll release his income tax returns
