of penn state to remember the man they called joe pa. the celebration then moved to joe paterno's statue outside the football stadium where a memorial is growing. the legendary coach died sunday from complications of lung cancer. >> joe paterno had been represented the best parts of this place, the soul of what it's about. >> reporter: his family said he was a man twoeted to his family, his university, his players and his community. paterno's career came to a sudden end in his 46th season. he was fired over how he handled the child molestation allegations surrounding jerry sandusky. his former assistant coach. paterno was criticized for not going to the police. in his final interview, paterno talked to "the washington post" about getting fired and being diagnosed with cancer within weeks of each other. >> i'm not as kpwerpbd me.

keating street in temple hills, maryland. two officers were responding to a reported domestic disturbance when they saw a man trying to leave the residence. officers used pepper spray and a taser to try to subdue him. he tried to take one of the officer's guns. one of the officers fired a service revolver before the suspect fled the scene. police are looking for this man, 30-year-old joseph quarm. the woman convicted in the lululemon murder is scheduled to be sentenced this week. a jury convicted brittany norwood in november of first- degree murder in the death of jayna murray. prosecutors are expected to ask the judge to impose a sentence of life in prison for the 29- year-old. norwood's lawyers are expected to argue their client needs help for mental illness. norwood killed murray be inside the store where they both worked. the match upis set for super bowl xlvi and it may look a little familiar! the new york giants versus the new england patriots, same as

. we're look at freezing rain advisory until 9:00 for the area. we do have drizzle around in spots. many areas are still upper 20s to low 30s. watch out for some slick areas. we'll get well up into the 40s. we can even see some periods of moderate rains with highs today upper 40s to low 50s. we'll have the rest of your weeks' forecast. right now, here's monica. >> live look northbound 95 near dale city. now, heading up north near acquire harbor, watch out for the fog. we'll talk about virginia roads coming up again at 4:47. andrea and mike? >> the wet and possibly slippery road are guaranteed to lead to some problems on area roads. >> 9news now delia gonsalves is at great seneca road in germantown. there are some icy patches but they sneak up on you, delia. >> reporter: that's right, it is hit-or-miss. we talked to some crews. we talk to matt in a second who says it is hit-or-miss. it could be fine here and four

miles down the road, you'll hit an ice rink. it is tough to chase the weather th weather this early morning. we wanted to give you a live look here on great seneca highway so you can see the main roads here have already been treated. crews have been out since last night. treated this road around 1:00 this morning waiting for more precipitation to be falling. here on stand-by. now, we're about four miles away from gaithersburg, northwest high school is just up the road here. you can see another plow truck heading down and barreling down the road. crews are on stand-by. it will be a long night, a long, early morning i should say for them. it has been a long night. matt hungerford, come on over. matt hungerford, contract for state highway, you've been here since last night. >> yes, ma'am. we got called out at 8:00 p.m. >> so, it elme what the conditions have been like. you already drove around in your personal vehicle to take a look. >> we've been patrolling the roads and doing some salt treating -- the bridges mostly.

but in the areas of where we got the high school here, tried to put a little extra down in this area for just in case of the buses or kids are walking back and forth to the shopping center. >> you treated at 1:00 you said. you just checked the latest forecast. the latest weather report. so, you're waiting for more precipitation. what's the -- what do you think the morning will shape up for you? >> they're calling for some precipitation yet, prior to 6:00 a.m. this morning. if that happens or not, like you said, it is in patches. we could get a pretty good little drizzle which would end up being ice in this area or just down the road a piece. >> you drove on some of the side roads. you're with state highway, only responsible for the main road here. state highway property. you drove on some of the side roads. those are pretty icy at this point. >> they are.

especially where there is tree lines and low areas, they tend to be colder so the moisture that does fall turns to ice. >> even though we're seeing a lot of fog in the air, it indicates there is warm weather in the atmosphere somewhere, there are still icing problems. maybe folks heading out this morning should probably be careful in those neighborhoods. >> they want to be extremely careful in their driveways. their driveways will be icy. and most likely, the road right out in front of their house will be icy. the sidewalks will definitely -- concrete freezes before asphalt so you're going to be careful walking. >> reporter: ok. long couple of days for you. >> yeah, it has been. but it has been fun. >> reporter: so, you're here until at least 10:00 this morning. you said the weather alert is until 6:00 a.m.ish. >> i'm guessing we'll be here between the hours of 9:00 and 10:00. >> all right. thank you. thanks for all of the hard work you guys do. >> a lot of guys say the plow truck operators, oftentimes

they're sitting on stand-by, maybe gearing up and kind of resting up but it is a very long night and a very long morning for these guys, a lot of hard work. so, these main roads, you're probably fine on the main roads but as matt was saying, when you're heading out, stepping out into your driveway, stepping out into your cul-de- sac or neighborhood, be very careful. drive with caution. there's probably some really icy, slick patches in those areas. many schools in this area do have a two-hour delay. opm, the office of personnel management for the government has a two-hour delay as well. so, you can anticipate an easier commute than normal but certainly take it slow on the roads. back to you. >> all right, delia gonsalves reporting live from germantown. >> it is time for the first your money segment of the morning. jessica doyle is off. here are today's headlines. oil is on the spotlight. new sanctions on iran's oil industry. europe gets about 18% of its

oil from that country. the move follows similar sanctions by the u.s. and great britain. they're all aimed at increasing pressure on iran to give up its nuclear program. >> the dow rallied more than 96 points. the s&p 500 was up nearly a point. the federal reserve kicks off a two-day meeting tomorrow. fed chair ben bernanke will hold a press conference after the meeting wraps up. it is also the first time fed members will offer their individual views and projections for interest rates and the economy. it is part of the central bank's plan to be more transparent to investors. pay pal wants to change the way you buy goods and services in stores. the popular online payment company owned by ebay allows people to pay for items without sharing their financial information. this march, it will let shoppers pay for its service in more than 2,000 brick and mortar stores. pay pal is already testing the service at a number of home depot locations. analysts say it is a major push toward mobile wallets and the biggest challenge yet to credit

howard bernstein is back and. course he brings some interesting weather with him. >> interesting, yes. frozen areas out there this morning. we're going to warm up. it may not happen until midmorning when we get above freezing everywhere. we do have some spots now below freezing. upper 20s, low 30s. that's why the concern as delia was talking out there with the slick areas. from my neighborhood and mike, you and i were talking earlier, his neighborhood was quite slick. a look at the winter warnings. we do have a freezing rain advisory. except for southern maryland, the northern neck until 9:00. there are areas that are above freezing. we'll tell you about that coming up in just a moment. looking at the bus stop

forecast, i know montgomery county, in a sense, a good day you were off because that's where one of the slicker areas are. drizzle and fog. upper 20s now. some areas in the upper 30s. some of the warmer air starting to creep in. our day planner, some light rain and 39. middle of the day, best chance of heavier rains. maybe even a clap of thunder. low 40s. we'll be again in the upper 40s. i gotta fix that. upper 40s here by 5:00 if not near 50 degrees. we'll show you the clouds and the satellite here and the radar. a few showers well over to our east and cape may. out east of us in the ohio valley, you can see the rain coming through. the yellow area, southern ohio, that's a severe thunderstorm watch. the warmer air reading some strong storms as well. 33 in town. north and west, this is where we've got some areas like winchester at 32. gaithersburg, upper 20s. this is the most likely area to see the slick spots.

fredericksburg down to tappahannock, across prince george's county county, at or below freezing like in upper marlboro. it is 30 in fairfax. anybody who is 32 or less, any untreated neighborhoods really will be a problem for a couple hours. as we look outside on the michael & son weather camera, cloudings shrouding the capitol. some of the visibilities at dulles, for example, down to a quarter mile. we'll get some dense fog west of town. national is 33. humidity very high. at 89%. that cold dampness is going to cut right through you. nationally, big storm here cutting through the midwest. you can see the snow up toward minneapolis. on the south side, this is like a spring system. joining the warmth off the gulf of mexico. tornado watches alabama into slivers of western georgia, kentucky, tennessee, southern ohio. severe thunderstorm watch. for us, the moisture is moving in. also, some warmer temperatures.

but for the next few hours, again, we're going to be below freezing with the fog, drizzle in spots. that could create some slick spots. as we go through the middle of the day though, i'll stop the clock at noon. look at the darker greens. these are more moderate rains. maybe a clap of thunder. philadelphia here by 5:00, heavier rains with lighter showers near us. evening showers. some partial clearing late and then better weather, much better weather for the rest of the week. in fact, today, we'll eventually get to around 49, 50. that may not happen until this eke. tonight, about 40 in town. 30s north and west. 52 on wednesday. by thursday, chance of a shower, 49. friday, look at that. 50 degrees. slight chance of a little bit of snow again on sunday. we'll be watching that. monika samtani, you're stepping in here at 4:49. take it away. >> as howard said, lesser- traveled roads, the neighborhood streets you might find some patches of ice. give yourself extra time to deal with that and dense fog as

well. namely on 270 coming down from germantown down to the point where the lanes divide. live look in that area. shady grove, the foggy conditions you're dealing with. you'll keep the speed limit down. we'll go back out to the maps. this time out west, same story on 66. we'll take a live look there as well. we're hearing that the foggiest area is going to be between gainesville, centreville and fairfax. here is an example at the fairfax county parkway. here at the 14th street bridge, much, much better. the length between the beltway and the bridge span. coming up, more on the fog at 4:55. andrea and mike? >> thank you, monika. we know we share our genes with our children but for women who have the breast cancer genes, this means you may very well pass those genes on as well. >> carrying the genes mean you and your child are 50% to 80% more likely to develop the disease. anita brikman has more.

>> reporter: lora greer has the brca gene mutation which puts her at very high risk for breast cancer. she's most worried about what that means for her 14-year-old daughter, summer. >> she will inherit the gene. >> after her twin sister, aunt and cousin all developed breast cancer, lora chose to have her breast and ovaries removed. she's never questioned letting her daughter know about her genetics. >> i needed to tell my daughter as well that she could be possibly have the gene. >> laura did what most parents do. researchers looked at more than 250 parents who had genetic breast cancer testing and found 66% shared their results with their kids. >> some of the children were quite young at the time that they received this information from their parents. >> there is a 50/50 chance people with the gene mouthations will pass it on to their kids. most doctors don't want to test the children until they're in their 20s. >> it is not eveningful for the child so we shouldn't subject the child to something that

won't be constructive for them. >> summer says she plans to be tested when she's older. >> it might worry me if i know that i have it but i would rather have the knowledge that i can help save myself. >> anita brikman, 9news now. a significant number of people keep smoking after being diagnosed with cancer. a new study in the journal cancer found 14% of colorectal cancer patients and 9% of lung cancer patients continue to smoke. doctors say smoking can interfere with treatment and reduce survival chances. a johns hopkins study is suggesting now that some autistic children can outgrow their diagnosis. researchers found children who have autism are also more likely to have a second condition such as depression or possibly speech problems. if those issues improve as the child gets older, they may no longer fit into the autism spectrum. it is time for the question of the morning. >> the average woman is believed to spend 76 days of their lives doing this.

welcome back here at 4:56. sev east weather threat this morning is the ice. we have a lot of slick spots throughout with some fog and freezing drizzle. by 9:00, we should be in the upper 30s, mainly light rain turning into some periods of moderate to heavy rain and showers. maybe a thunderstorm pushes through. temperatures will be climbing into the 40s this afternoon. in fact, the upper 40s late today to near 50 in spots. it looks like this is going to be one of the worst days of the week. we'll tell you more about that coming up during 9news now at 5:00. here's monika with timesaver

jennifer hudson's family. edward lawrence has those stories and more in this week's look at entertainment. jury selection is set to begin april 9th for the man accused of killing members of jennifer hudson's family. the singer's mother, brother and nephew were shot in chicago of 2008. her estranged brother-in-law is charged with the murders. lady gaga is getting her message out to young people. the singer's launching her born this way foundation next month at harvard university. the organization will work with young people on issues like antibullying and self- confidence. tomorrow is a big day in tinseltown when hollywood wakes up early for the oscar nominations. anywhere from five to ten films could be nominated. some of this year's favorites, meryl streep and the iron lady. >> i have done battle every single day of my life. >> george clooney for the descendants. >> don't ever do that to me again. >> a handful of potential
