weather. the federal government is opening at 11:00 this morning. there are more government, private school and business closings running at the bottom of your screen. here's howard. >> got two problems this morning. one, we still have icy neighborhoods. anything that wasn't treated got a lot of areas that are still below freezing. that's problem a. the main roads seem to be all right. the other big problem, the fog. visibilities that are a quarter mile or less. lots of areas. that will also slow you down. we start this morning with a look at the day planner. where we start kind of difficult. temperature in town, 33. but that is not indicative of many areas at or below freezing. by noon, low 40s. we'll have periods of rain or moderate showers at times as highs climb into the upper 40s to around 50 degrees. not 38. that should be about 48 at 5:00 p.m. freezing rain advisory here across the entire metro.

it does not cover the northern neck or st. mary's county. this goes until 9:00 or everybody. we've been watching the clouds and the drizzle during the overnight and temperatures are still 30 in manassas. 32 la plata and fredericksburg. hagerstown, below freezing. that's problem a. we're not really seeing much in the way of precip. that's a good thing. the fog, the fog is out there and it is really dense. quarter mile at gaithers burst, also at dulles. reports across fairfax county. westminster, you notice here, west of town. half-mile in stafford. got the dense fog there. with looking at the big picture. some rain in the ohio valley. that's what will be moving in later this morning into the afternoon. it is now 5:01, i go over to monika with timesaver traffic. >> the biggest concern this morning will be heading out of your neighborhoods where you're more likely to find icy patches especially where the roads have not been treated. otherwise, once you're on the main roads, it will be the fog. things look fine on 95 coming

down from baltimore. 270 though. we'll take a live look where it has been foggy. dense fog in parts of the area on 270 in and around this area from germantown. this is falls road down to the point where the lanes divide. we'll take you back out to the maps. if you're planning to use metro, i want to let you know -- first, start with 66. at the fairfax county parkway, a good example of the fog you're dealing with coming in from gainesville into fairfax. take a live look on the northbound side of 395 which looks line up to the 14th street bridge. no problems to report along that stretch. now, if you're planning to take metro, because of the delayed federal opening this morning, they will expand their a.m. rush hour service with additional trips this morning. that should help out if you're heading out to work at 9:00. they have canceled their midday track work. more on area roadways coming up in my next report at 5:09. many of us didn't encounter any serious problems.

>> we took a poll in the newsroom. people from the district, people from virginia, northeast of d.c., no problems. i live northwest of the city. just far enough where there were some slick spots. be careful on your driveway. i needed an ice scraper. >> steps coming down from your home. >> that's where you'll probably encounter some stuff. >> delia gonsalves is live with a check of the conditions. she was in germantown the last time we spoke. are you still there? >> yes, we are. some of the plows are out here already treating some of the roads. now, they came out here at 1:00 a.m., treated the roads. laid down some salt mixture for the precipitation that already fell. what they're doing at this point, they told me, we spoke to matt hungerford, the manager of the crew today. we spoke to him in the last half hour. said basically, they have to check the road for safety when the morning commute begins and as we know, the morning commute is just underway. a lot of folks are heading out of their home the. as you had mentioned, as monika had mentioned, the main concern

today is when you're stepping out of your homes, your driveway may be slick. your porch may be slick. the sidewalks as well. take a look at the main roads here. there's already some salt and so they've done a good job at treating the main roads. we're just a little shy -- a little shy from the northwest high school so this is a very well-traveled area. you can see some cars are on the roads already. so, certainly, your main roads won't be a problem this morning but if you live in some of the cul-de-sac neighborhoods and some of the side roads, you might be a little sticky when you're heading out the door this morning. certainly, proceed with caution and drive very carefully as you're heading out to your morning commute and heading out to work this morning. we are having a little bit of a mist right now. so, that potentially could be a problem. obviously, it is still very cold here. any kind of precipitation that does fall could eventually freeze. so, that's why the crews are back on the road to try to take

care of things and make sure it is safe for the commuters who will be heading out on the road. two hour delays for most folks heading to work and school today. so, it will be a bit easier and a bit lighter on the roads. we've put in some calls to find out why they made that call. they've made that call for a two hour delay last night. we're hoping to hear back from them and have more details for you in the next half hour. back to you. >> thanks a lot, delia. 5:05 now. silver spring family is fine. their townhouse gutted by fire this weekend. the flames started around 7:30 last night in the basement of the home on littonsville road. montgomery and prince george's county firefighters were able to stop the flames from seriously damaging adjoining homes. no one was injured but the first floor partially collapsed into the basement in the initial townhouse. a fire in laurel, maryland, sent dozens of families out into the cold yesterday. this one started on the fourth floor of an apartment at horizon square apartments.

everyone got out safely. three units were destroyed though. investigators are still looking for the cause. prince george's county police are investigating a shooting involving one of their own officers in temple hills, maryland. police say they don't know whether their suspect, 30-year- old joseph quarm was wounded because he's still at large. they tried to stop him from leave the scene of a domestic disturbance. he tried to take one of the officer's guns. a females officer discharged her weapon before he left the scene. s arizona congresswoman gabrielle giffords announces her decision about her future in congress. >> ahead in sports, both games to determine the super bowl contenders went down to the wire. one of them went to overtime. highlights coming up next. the 2-4-6-8 value menu's

welcome back. glad you're here. 5:13. we're about to get to weather first. we want to mention some closings and delays with schools. virginia, alexandria, prince william county and stafford county all opening two hours late. in west virginia, schools in berkeley, jefferson and morgan counties opening two hours late. >> the federal government is opening at 11:00 this morning as is the city of takoma park. the arlington county government and city of falls church are open with unscheduled leave. liberal leave is in effect for frederick county government workers. there are more closings runs at the bottom of your screen. now, let's get to howard and his forecast first. >> we do have some slick spots. delia gonsalves has been out there. we live north of town.

my neighborhood was not good. frequent request to my county's highway departments. i don't know what's going on. >> we had ice scrapers going. >> find out why -- >> i heard from someone in reston. >> the mine highways with the secondary streets not even touched. >> fog is a big problem. some areas, a quarter mile or less. a double whamo to get you out the door. here's a look at the advisories. everybody in pink except for st. mary's county. everybody is in a freezing rain advisory until 9:00 this morning. get some drizzle out there. not so much rain. even drizzle is enough to cause some slick spots. at the bus stop, we'll call for some fog, some drizzle. the slick spots, temps running from the upper 20s then other areas well south of town, southwest of town in the upper 30s. sunrise, 7:21. later this morning, we'll get above freezing. 37 or so by 8:00 here in d.c. by noon, low 40s. the bigger problem later today will be the rain and winds will turn from northerly direction early but come out of the south.

that will bring warmer air and moisture. mid-40s by 4:00. upper 40s. some areas near 50 before the day is out with the showers that could get occasionally heavy. fog, the other issue. visibilities in gaithersburg and dulles, quarter mile. half-mile here in warrenton. you head out to luray and stanton, we're talking 10 mile visibility there. fredericksburg dealing with some fog as well. in town, we have four mile visibility but not all that bad here. really, with cloudy skies and 33 degrees in washington. we're just above freezing. few showers there across the delmarva. heavier rain out in the ohio valley. especially kentucky and tennessee. southern ohio. that will move in our direction. we have the threat later for some heavier downpours. this morning though, i'm concerned when i see a 32 in fredericksburg and a 28 in gaithersburg and 28 in hagerstown. these areas of far northern virginia and parts of maryland dealing with subfreezing temperatures and pockets of subfreezing temperatures down across areas in charlotte

county. calvert and anne arundel as well. here's a look outside. cloudy skies an our michael & son weather camera. u.s. capitol dole. we have the low clouds. 33 degrees. it feels like 33. winds are calm at reagan national. humidity high at 89%. a humid, foggy morning. one storm coming onshore with rain and snow. got snow falling for the upper midwest. the western lakes and then the southern half, spring-like weather with a tornadic thunderstorm here across alabama, turning to severe thunderstorms into kentucky, tennessee and southern ohio and all of that moisture and warmer readings moving in our direction. once we get rid of this moisture today, it does look like with this coming through, it does look like we'll stay on the mild side of things for the next couple of days. in fact, here is a look at the 7-day forecast. today, 49. we'll definitely have some rain. could be moderate to heavy at times. tonight, 40 in town. tomorrow, 54. wednesday, 52. could be a late shower

thursday. better chance of showers friday and then colder temperatures and one of the computer models i kind of like is hinting at wintry weather returning next sunday. watch out for the fog early. monika? >> same message we've been giving this morning. not only fog but icy patches especially coming out of your neighborhoods, your driveway can be slippery. once you get on to the main thoroughfares, those have been treated. that will be the fog you're dealing with. we'll first take a look at route 50 from annapolis. it is looking all right. let's take a look at sandy point off the bay bridge. as you come through this area and over to the beltway, you will be ok. then it is mainly the fog you're dealing with to the west and north of town and we'll take a look at the southbound side of i-270 as well and give you an example of the fog. in clarksburg, pretty much looks like this all the way down through rockville and the point where the lanes divide. it is dense fog and reduced visibility we're concerned with this morning. we'll take a look at the northbound side of 395, much

it is 5:21 on this foggy and in some cases, icy monday morning. we've got temps upper 20s and low 30s. freezing rain advisory until 9:00. really worried about a little bit of drizzle. one good thing is by 9:00, everybody should be above freezing. over the next few hours, we'll warm up. we'll also get wetter. you'll notice the rains moving in here especially by midday and the afternoon as temperatures climb into the mid and the upper 40s before we're all done. andrea and mike, back to you. >> many football fans were getting excited about the possible of the harbaugh brothers coaching against each other in the super bowl. >> that's not the way it turned out after last night's championship games. dave owens has the highlights in your morning sports. >> good morning, everybody. it is the game before the game and every year without fail, the conference championship games, two of the best. for the right to play in the super bowl, a dream for most on the precipice of reality for four teams yesterday. let's take a look.

bottom of your screen right now. >> of course, the bad weather is one of the reasons why today is officially blue monday. >> blue monday. we've got fog as well. not just the freezing rain advisory but dense fog in spots. i tend to believe we don't have the freezing rain advisory, we would have a dense fog advisory but i imagine weather service didn't want to confuse things too much because obviously the slickness is more of a concern and more of a threat to you for the next couple of hours. we start this morning with a look at our day planner where we do expect temperatures to be rising here over the next few hours. there we go. 33 now. 42 by noon. and by 5:00, 47. some of the rain showers on the hefty side. a little bit later this morning through the afternoon. but the first concern, the freezing rain advisory. st. mary's county, the northern neck, you're not in it. everybody else west of the bay is. we still have slick spots in many areas across northern virginia through central maryland. 30 now in manassas. look at the warmth coming up the valley.

winchester not quite there yet at 32. culpepper and orange, just at or slightly above freezing. still below freezing for martinsburg, frederick is 27. gaithersburg, 29. baltimore, 32. andrews is 30. you see a little bit of freezing drizzle here in southwestern prince george's county. other areas, some spotty drizzle not being picture up as well. the fog, some sleet and fog in montgomery county where gaithersburg's visibility down to one quarter mile. also a quarter at dulles, manassas, one half-mile. look at the areas up and down 95 from quantico. this goes down to richmond as well. dense fog there. the rain out to the west. that will be here a little bit later this morning and in the afternoon. it is now 5:30. monika is in with timesaver traffic. >> i want to mention that metro has expanded their a.m. rush hour service with the federal government opening late at 11:00. extra trains for you extending through the morning. that should help as you head out the door later this

morning. no problems to report in terms of accidents or incidents on the beltway north of town. it will be the patchy, dense fog that howard's been talking about all morning long. let's take a live look in college park. you can see a bit of volume forming although delays with schools and some schools closed this morning, i think that will help a lot with volume and dealing with the road conditions, especially as you head out of your neighborhoods, watch out for the icy patches also on your driveway. we'll take a live look elsewhere. if you're planning to head over to the inside of the beltway on 66 and 395, everybody is moving at speed. the fog doesn't seem to be an issue here. just a volume forming as you head up from the occoquan river on 95 then here in landmark looks ok through the landmark area up to the 14th street bridge. it is the fog that's an issue on 66. live look in centreville. it will look like this as you come in from gainesville. coming up, another look at area roadways at 5:39. mike and andrea.

>> if you live north and west of the district, chances are you're going to have an icy drive at least out of your neighborhood this morning. >> that's where untreated side streets and temperatures still hover below 32 degrees and have led to refreezing. 9news now reporter delia gonsalves is monitoring conditions in germantown, maryland. good morning, delia. is it better? i see a lot of trucks behind you. >> reporter: good morning, andrea. the trucks are on stand-by waiting to come back and retreat the roads. they've already done one pass through waiting to come out for a second. it was missing a little bit earlier. it has stopped. of we still have that really dense fog which is also proving to be an issue for commuters this morning. with visibility. so, not only will you have the slick roads in your neighborhood, you are going to have some visibility issues but take a look on the main road here, great seneca highway, you can see the car just kind of zooming by. traffic, shouldn't be a problem here because the roads have been treated.

we talked to matt hungerford, the manager of the crews with state highway who were on stand- by here at clipper's -- cloppers mill plaza here. i'm sorry. he told me that you know, they came out at 1:00. treated the roads. they've been on stand-by ever since. making sure the roads are safe for the morning commute. they've been monitoring the weather. they're going to be here at least until 10:00 a.m. but as many folks have mentioned on our newscast this morning, the main problem is going to be getting out into your neighborhoods. getting out of -- stepping out on to your concrete patio. stepping out on to your driveway. you'll find some slick spots. generally, the main roads, right off northwest high school, the main roads are fine here in germantown. as far as opm, federal government has a two hour delay. we've been contacting opm. i sent them an e-mail.

she says she'll get back to us as soon as possible. she's trying to find out why they made the call so early to delay folks from coming into work at 9:00 a.m., folks with the federal government coming in at 11:00. hopefully we'll hear from her within the next half hour. we'll have an update for you. andrea? >> thank you, delia gonsalves reporting live from germantown. the woman convicted in the brutal murder of her lululemon athletic ca shop coworker faces sentencing this week. a montgomery county jury convicted brittany norwood of first-degree murder in the death of jayna murray last march. prosecutors will ask the judge to impose a sentence of life in prison. according to a presentencing report obtained by "the washington post," prosecutors say norwood is "an evil, cunning and path logical liar who is beyond rehabilitation." norwood's lawyers are expected to argue she needs help for mental illness. the four remaining presidential hopefuls will redate in florida tonight

again. 50 convention delegates are at stake in the sunshine state which holds its presidential primary a week from tomorrow. mitt romney spent sunday on the campaign trail attacking his rival newt gingrich. he served to win the south carolina primary on saturday. and now romney is attacking gingrich for ethics questions he faced when he was serving as house speaker. >> he had to resign in disgrace. i don't know whether you knew that. he resigned after four years in disgrace. >> governor romney may be running for ceo. i'm running for president. president of the united states has to understand the government of the united states. barack obama clearly didn't. candidly, i doubt if governor romney would. >> now, mitt romney is also pushening up the release of his tax returns after other candidates demanded he do so. the former massachusetts governor earlier said he would release them in april. he plans to do so tomorrow, tuesday. today in annapolis, martin o'malley, the governor is hosting what's described as the first tweet up by a maryland

governor. it is an in person gathering of people who normally only communicate on twitter. the governor's event will be focused on outlining his legislative priorities for 2012 in the general assembly. at 5:36, time for another "your money" report. jessica doyle is off today. later this morning, we'll see if u.s. investors head in any particular direction. this morning, the major asian exchanges are closed and they close mixed last week and the europe even markets are mixed in early trading there. friday, the dow closed at 12,720 12,720. maryland outpaces virginia in job growth according to today's "washington examiner." which calls into question virginia governor bob mcdonnell's theory his republican-controlled state is friendlier to business than maryland where democrats martin o'malley is governor and democrats control the state house. maryland created eight times

welcome back to 9news now at 5:45. school delays to tell you about. schools in alexandria, prince william, stafford county, warren county, winchester all opening two hours late. in west virginia, schools in berkeley, jefferson and morgan counties are all opening two hours late. >> the federal government opening at 11:00 a.m. this morning as is the city of takoma park. arlington county government and city of falls church is unscheduled leave. there are more government private school and business closings running at the bottom of your screen. check for those as well. >> howard? >> you know, we've got two problems obviously the slickness left over from the weekend's wintry weather. temperatures hovering just below freezing in many areas and a little bit of drizzle. there may be some slight icing. fog, dense fog in spots. also, going to delay you this morning. we start though with a look at

that freezing rain advisory which is in effect until 9:00 a.m. for everybody. except for st. mary's county and also the northern neck. going down toward richmond though and points west of town, fog is another big problem as well. let's start with the bus stop forecast. got a lot of delays this morning. montgomery county's off for a work day. drizzle and fog, slick spots. upper 20s to upper 30s. warm spots south and southwest of town. sunrise not until 7:21. we'll get milder and wetter as the day wears on. later this morning toward midday, rain will pick up. temperatures by noon should be in the low 40s. by 5:00, upper 40s. south winds, 9 miles per hour. some of the rain through the middle of the afternoon, there could be some heavier downpours mixed in. with an outside chance we'll get a clap of thunder as well. live doppler 9000 hd, fairly quiet. a little bit of echoes here in southwestern areas of prince george's county. generally as you head toward accokeek, fort washington, over

toward national harbor. there are other areas that have got spotty drizzle. this stuff is so low level, radar doesn't pick it up. visibility down to one quarter mile in gaithersburg, dulles. half-mile in manassas. reports from herndon. brett telling me about that. stafford, 3/4. fredericksburg, visibility has come up from half-mile to one mile. up toward fredericksburg, we're at a half-mile. we don't have a lot of precip going on. we do have damp streets and frozen streets. some of your neighborhoods might not have been touched at all. 28 in gaithersburg. 30 in rockville. 31 in upper marlboro. still frozen there along with andrews at 30. 32 for alexandria. we'll head west into fairfax county. much of the county, 30, 31. down to 29 for lovettsville and 30 out toward haymarket. the next few hours, cloudy, damp, drizzly.

clearing. better weather as we head through tuesday and wednesday as the sunshine should be winning the match here. 49 this morning. early freezing drizzle and fog. we'll get out of that in the next few hours. tomorrow, mild. 54. still mild wednesday. 52. thursday, clouds increase. going to be a shower late. better chance of showers on friday. the temperature of 50. and some hints that maybe something wintry here as we head toward sunday. right now though, 5:49. 33 degrees. we need an update on your timesaver traffic. >> a couple of incidents popping up around town. we want to start off at the top to tell you there are two main things to deal with. we've all been telling you this. the paáfpy dense fog and also icy conditions especially in the lesser-traveled roadways and your neighborhood streets. once you get on to the major thoroughfares, everything is doing fine with the exception of one spot right now where we have downed wires on the inner loop of the beltway, on the ramp to westbound 202. authorities are there dealing with with that problem. go ahead and use route 50 as

you head south on the inner loop of beltway and avoid route 202 in that area. i'll keep you posted on that. live picture of 270. the dense fog here continues from frederick down through clarksburg down past falls road to the point where the lanes divide. it is going to slow you down, give yourself the extra time you'll need to deal with it. luckily, the volumes will be lighter than normal with the federal government being delayed and montgomery county schools off as well. we'll take you back over to the maps. this time, the west side of town. same story on 66. we'll take a live look here as well. as we past manassas, it will look pretty much like this. 395 on the other hand is looking fine between the beltway and the 14th street bridge. back over to our graphics, with the delayed federal government opening, metro has an expanded service for the a.m. rush hour. they'll have extra trains for you this morning. and no midday track work will help things move along fast. talk about more area roadways

we've got frozen areas thanks to the weekend weather. still temps below freezing. north and west of town. a little bit of drizzle and fog but by 9:00, look at this. we'll be in the upper 30s, even 40 in annapolis. showers moving in from southwest to northeast. some of the showers middle of the afternoon, will be on the heftier side by 3:00, temps pushing the mid-40s. we'll top out upper 40s, maybe near 50 south. better days ahead tomorrow and wednesday. andrea? >> thank you, howard. a meeting set for today might help end a trademark dispute between wolf trap and another venue. wolf trap is suing that venue. the barns of rose hill in virginia. wolf trap wants rose hill to drop the words the barn. wolf trap says it has operated the barns at wolf trap for more than 30 years and it sees the -- it says the name is infringing on its trademark. they say they don't have the money to fight the lawsuit if it does go to court.
