6:00 am
federal workers along with everyone following the fed, you're on a two-hour delay as well. federal workers may take unscheduled leave or telework for the entire day. >> here's monika samtani. she'll be back in a moment with timesaver traffic. >> welcome back. thanks for the weather you brought with you. >> this morning, we've got some slick areas especially north and west of town. lots of temperatures still below freezing. i know some neighborhoods never saw any sand or salt this weekend. we've got some patchy, dense fog as well. 33 at reagan national. 38 by 9:00. light showers. the middle of the day and the afternoon, heavier showers. warming temperatures well up through the 40s. might even see 50 in a few spots before the day is out. the freezing rain advisory has been canceled for parts of the shenandoah valley and the mountains where temperatures have warmed well up above freezing but still in effect
6:01 am
until 9:00 in many areas around the immediate metro. right now, the temps, you see 38 luray. that's why they've canceled the advisory. winchester still 32. gaithersburg 29. manassas at 30. live doppler 9000 hd, a little drizzle around the i-95 corridor being picked up. other areas might see a little drizzle or mist. and fog before i go. check the visibilities. westminster down to zero. quarter mile gaithersburg and half-mile in manassas, gaithersburg and hagerstown. for an update on traffic, here's monika samtani. >> well, again, the big story of the morning will be the patchy dense fog and also icy conditions, especially on the lesser-traveled roadways. give yourself the extra time you may need to deal with that. downed wires blocking the ramp from the inner loop of the beltway to get on to northbound route 202. crews are on the scene there. they've told us they're working on the problem. go ahead and use route 50 inbound as your alternate route. the loop is blocked off right
6:02 am
now. we'll take you out live right now. if you're planning to head on 270, the big story has definitely been fog right down the line from frederick to falls road and the point where the lanes divide. reduced visibilities as you can see, volumes forming traveling slowly along 270 with the lanes open this morning. we'll go back out to the maps. head out to 66 on the inbound side. dense fog here as well. we'll take a live look on the inbound side. if you're planning to head inbound on 66, you've got it. here's what it looks like at the fairfax county parkway. it is slow all the way through this area heading up toward lorton and springfield. once you're on 395, volumes are still fairly light as you head past duke street to the 14th street bridge and here's what it looks like in landmark again. volumes fairly light. fog really not too much of a problem in this area. i want to also just mention that if you're planning to take metro, they have expanded morning service with the federal government opening at 11:00. extra trains to help you along.
6:03 am
coming up, more on area roadways at 6:11. mike and andrea? >> thanks, monika. in my neighborhood in gaithersburg, bit slippery. needed the ice scraper. it was slick in my neighborhood. howard said the same thing up in clarksburg. >> we want to check in with conditions in montgomery county. delia gonsalves is live in germantown. good morning. >> good morning, andrea. we've been here off great seneca highway monitoring the continues for you. the main road looks good because it has been treated. we have been stationary because we wanted to give you an idea of what the main roads are like. here to talk to us about what the rest of the area looks like is matt hungerford. he's i guess the manager here with the crew with state highway? >> i'm running one of the trucks tonight. >> you were telling me something really interesting about the hours, right before daybreak. the moments right before we see the sun. the coldest, right? >> yes. the last hour of the night, just before the sun breaks, the moon is actually separated
6:04 am
farther away from -- and the sun is coming around. it is actually the coldest part of the night before daybreak. >> is that when you're likely to see more refreezing? >> yeah, we're going to send them out to treat the bridges. the concrete is one of your first areas that will freeze. since like this curve right here is froze solid where the asphalt is not. what you have to be careful of if you're getting up and going out of your house is when you step out of your front door, most people's front porches are cement. and that will be slippery. >> the driveways, too, you said you drove in your personal car on the side roads and those when we last spoke about an hour ago, were pretty slick. >> they were. they were extremely slick. you know, you don't have -- you don't have the same conditions on the back roads as you do on the main roads. this is a snow wrap. this is a snow emergency route
6:05 am
from the state highway. so, obviously even with montgomery county, the snow emergency routes will be more protected. there will be a better chance of them not being real slippery. >> ok. matt hungerford, thank you so much. you've been a trooper hanging out with us all morning long. thanks so much. have a great day. stay safe. i wanted to tell -- pass this along to you. just before we left, i reached out to opm. i've been telling you all morning we've been contacting apm about this two hour delay situation. we got a statement saying they made the call after the council of government told them about freezing rain that could occur during the morning commute. they found and discovered that it would be safest for folks to be off the roads until 9:00. the new alert, they say, provided the flexibility for more precise messaging to plan around safety concerns. the council of government, as you know, is the agency that
6:06 am
took a close look at the carmageddon situation from last winter, last january and said what did we do wrong? what happened? and how could we do a better job at reassessing the situation and getting everyone off the road so crews can do the job. crews like matt hungerford can do their job before we send employees out on the roads. that was one of the main problems in carmageddon. certainly, they've made that decision based on what the council of governments recommended and so they told folks to stay home until crews do their work and head to work at 11:00 a.m. back to you. >> all right, delia gonsalves reporting live in germantown, maryland this morning. >> and here is a live look in northwest washington. this is in chinatown right at verizon center. roads are just wet through most of the district. fog was the big problem starting there. we were about to show you that video. here it is. this is -- that was a quick picture of the verizon center. and you saw buses in front of
6:07 am
the verizon there. they're going to take some of the people, the young people who are going to be rallying after a prayer service on the mall and for today's march for life. now, we have a live look at fairfax circle. that's where routes 29 and 50 meet. the roads look good there but as we've been telling you, be careful on sidewalks or side streets, just in case there are a few slick spots, we've been total there are some neighborhoods not touched all weekend long. whether it is snowing, icy, raining or enjoyable, 9news has you covered. you can get the latest forecast 24/7 at wusa9.com. either on your computer or your smart phone. congresswoman gabrielle giffords will resign from office in the next few days. the arizona democrat survived an assassination attempt last year. she released. >> tube video sunday thanking people for their support. >> i have more work to do on my recovery. so, to do what is best for
6:08 am
arizona, i will step down this week. >> giffords said she will attend the state of the union address tomorrow and today, she plans on finishing the meet and greet in tucson which ended in the shooting which left six people dead. there will be a special election to replace giffords in april. jessica doyle is off today. we're still watching your money this morning. the fed begins a two-day meeting here in washington today. individual members will give their takes on where the economy is heading and what they'll do about interest rates. this is really pretty much a p.r. move to be more transparent to investors and the general public when it comes to financial policies. gas prices still creeping up in our region. aaa says the average price for a gallon of regular is now $3.46 in the d.c. metro area, up a penny from yesterday. and up 6 cents from a week ago. 23 cents from a month ago. they just keep going up. nationwide, the average is $3.38 a gallon.

6:13 am
>> president obama is still working on tuesday's state of the union address. of it will sound a lot like speeches he's been making, particularly one he made last month in kansas, a call for economic fair play which his opponents saw as a call to class warfare. this is how mr. obama previewed the speech in a web cast. >> that's rebuilding an economy where hard work pays off. and responsibility is rewarded. and in america where everybody gets a fair shot, everyone does their fair share and everybody plays by the same set of rules. >> there are likely to be some new proposals in the speech to aid the housing crisis, spur made in the u.s.a. manufacturing and help more people to go to college and the president will continue to insist that wealthier americans pay a larger share of taxes. this year, the annual speech to congress is likely to be seen as the keynote of president obama's campaigns so the white house continues to insist that's focused on his job, not
6:14 am
his prospect for re-election. but the president's campaign organization is hard at work. they raised $157 million and the president himself is taking his noncampaign on the road for three days, following the state of the union. he's going to hit five of the key states that he'll need to win in november. bill plante, cbs news, the white house. the president's state of the union tomorrow night. catch it right here on channel 9 and on wusa9.com. 9:00 p.m. we'll bring you the republican response and indiana governor mitch daniels will be doing it this year. >> we have some delays to pass along because of weather... federal workers along with everyone following the feds, you're on a two-hour delay. federal workers may take unscheduled leave or telework for the entire day. >> in virginia, the schools are owning two hours late. alexandria, clark county, prince william, stafford, warren and winchester again
