first negative ad to come directly from the romney campaign, instead of a super pac, supporting him. gingrich is fighting to raise the money to strike back, and fast. florida's primary is less than a week away, and is shaping up to be the most expensive so far. right now, romney has the biggest war chest and the largest organization. but gingrich raised $1 million in the first 24 hours after his south carolina win. he is now leading in at least one florida poll. >> please remind everybody that they have a chance to help nominate a genuine grass roots conservative, versus the establishment's money candidate. gingrich and romney are treating the next primary like a two man race. two candidates insist they are still in the fight. rick santorum kicked off his campaign saying romney and gingrich trying to destroy one

other. at the white house, randall pinkston, 9news now. ron paul may not be spending money to campaign in florida, but he says he is not skipping tonight's debate in tampa. president obama is expected to focus on the economy as he delivered his state of the union address tomorrow night. his populous message will characterize the republicans as a do-nothing congress. the republican response will be delivered by indiana governor mitch daniels. channel 9 will carry the state of the union address followed by live reaction and analysis on 9news now at 11:00 tuesday night. is john hinckley still obsessed with trying to kill a president? does he deserve a pass of complete release from a psychiatric ward? bruce is live at u.s. district court where a federal judge is trying to figure out that out. >> reporter: hinkley's lawyers

want him out, but prosecutors and the secret service are convinced that he is still a threat. today here in u.s. district court, they thought they had this bookstore worker who could really help them make that case. but hinkley's lawyer took this guy apart. the court is trying to peer into the mind of a man who nearly killed president reagan, a cop, a press secretary and a secret service agent. prosecutors point to a fleeting moment at a barnes & noble in williamsburg last year as a hint of what's going on in john hinckley's head. a secret service agent saw hinkley focusing on a shelf in a bookstore, loaded with books about presidential assassinations. it lasted all of 15 seconds.

but when he saw the books, the agent said it gave him chills. now a worker at the store says hinkley asked him, last august, about books on presidential assassination, he did not recognize hinkley, but every time he went past the shelf, he says he thought about the conversation. then in december, the court says he remembered. hinkley was down in williamsburg -n august. he wasn't. he said this conversation took place in the evening. hinkley did not go shopping in the evening. so if it wasn't in august, and it wasn't in the evening, asked

hinkley's lawyer, barry levin, would you want to back out of your testimony? long pause, then richard roll said i would want to become out of my testimony. >> what is the judge to do, after hearing this? >> >> reporter: i don't know. i have covered hearings for a long, long time. you don't usually hear perry mason moments. this seemed like a perry mason moment. the judge is going to have to judge this, make a decision on whether this guy has any credit built at all. hinkley's lawyers moved to have all the testimony thrown out. the government contested that and will argue that at some.down the road. it is going to be interesting to see what the judge does. thanks bruce. a woman is dead after an accident in an elementary school parking lot. police say a maintenance worker driving a school van must have backed over the woman. she died at the scene. it happened this morning at samuel chase elementary in temple hills. neighbors call it a tragedy.

cultivators and gardening enthusiasts. the justice department has charged a former cia officer with repeatedly leaking classified information to reporters. he is 47-year-old john karery of arlington. the alleged leaked information included the ids of cia operatives, involved in capturing and questioning terror suspects. he has spoken out publicly about the cia's use of water board and go others. i'm scott broom at penn state university. where the grieving continues for joe paterno. and a period of mourning has been announced by university officials. >> i'm thinking this man loved the community. >> reporter: the parade of faithful continues their pilgrimage to the paterno statue outside beaver stadium today.

a commuter plane, headed to dulles international airport was diverted today to bwi, instead. it happened when an indicator showed there might be a problem with the plane's landing gear. spokesperson for express jet, 6060 said the plane landed safely and other arrangements were made to get 42 passengers on board to dulles or their final destinations. i want to remind you about new consumer protections coming to the airline industry this week. companies are now going to be forced to tell you the real cost of a flight. all of it. they can't tell you about a $200 flight that could end up being much more when tacks and fees are included. changes are set by the department of transportation, and go into effect this thursday. coming up on 9news now,

county. but i think we are pretty much done with showers. the clouds are going to hang tough. low clouds. can't scour them out just yet. temperatures 37 in bethesda. 37 in rockville. 37 in arlington. 38, temperature going up. 37 in reston, 35 in laurel. 31 in andrews. farther south on 95, you have temperatures down toward fredericksburg. some dense fogton. we will remain above freezing. some fog for the morning commute, especially the early commuters. a light jacket to tuesday -- for tuesday is about all you are going to need. mostly cloudy and chilly. showers ending early. dense fog possible. low temperatures 4 to about 40 and light winds. that is kind of key. so here's the deal. use your low beams. keep more distance between you and the car in front of you. it is going to be worse north and west of town.

it could affect the early morning commute. the very early morning commute. ening we are going to be in pretty good shape. by morning, returning mostly sunny and cool, just grab your shades. 50s and 40s, that is a good star to a january morning with everybody above freezing. most folks in the 40s by then. winds out of the southwest at 10. by afternoon, mostly sunny and mild. just gorgeous. a light jacket is all you are going to need. high temperatures near 55 winds on you of the southwest at 10. the wind will change tomorrow night. the cold front is not exactly going to happen. above freezing, little fog. gorgeous by noon temperatures 46 to 51. by evening temperatures 52 to 56 under mostly sunny skies. now the next three days, we are looking at temperatures falling off just a little bit. going from the 50s to the 40s, we can handle that.

clouds come in, we are 46. light rain and showers thursday temperatures still in the upper 40s. now the next seven days. after this little system goes through thursday, which is not exactly power packed, look at friday. some morning clouds again, it will get a little bit colder over the weekend. mid-40s on saturday and actually rather cold on sunday. upper 30s on monday. good news for the ski resorts. they are going to get natural snow for the weekend and make snow all weekend as well. got a little bit of white stuff. you know, it is like nothing for topper. >> you know you get something measurable. he is not going to be happy. a lot of people are happy. baltimore fans unhappy. but there could be a rematch. rematch. >> another great weekend, some great games and the result is another clash of the titans.
