consultant for freddie mac. the center for health information, the consulting firm found -- a 1999 contract, it shows he began receiving $25,000 a month to work with the mortgage giant's chief lobbyist but the agreement specifically excluded lobbying services. gingrich left the firm last year to prepare his run for president. d.c. police chief cathy lanier spoke to residents last night about a recent string of armed robberies in northwest washington. since the first of the year, there have been nine armed robberies within three miles of the tinley metro. the latest happened monday night. police are offering up to $10,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction. two weeks ago, three of the nine armed robberies happened on the same night within 30 minutes of each other. the victims were walking on quiet residential streets less than three miles apart. police believe the majority if not all of the crimes are related. they believe the crimes are being perpetrated by a group of

two to three men. >> no more sleeping for occupy d.c. demonstrators at mcpherson square. during a hearing on capitol hill tuesday, the national park service director jonathan jarvis, admitted to allowing protestors to sleep in the park to help keep the peace. this contradicts a law which allows around-the-clock protests but prohibits camping in national parks. jarvis says park police officers will begin to enforce the no camping law here like they do in national parks around the country. he's not said how or when that will take place. police in vienna have discovered a case of a real life underground fight club. >> what's more alarming is the participants are believed to be middle school age children. ken molestina has details. >> reporter: according to police, officers were combing the streets of vienna on january 13th, looking for a missing juvenile. officers say when it got here to this area, they found a group of about 20 middle schoolers who claim to have been part of a fight club. vienna, it is a medium-sized

town with about 60,000 residents, mostly a quiet suburban community, not known for anything quite like this. >> you do not talk about fight club. >> but according to police, something similar to a movie fight club happened weekly. police say about 20 middle school boys ranging in age from 11 to 13 got together along the 100 block of park street for a prearranged fight. there wasn't any bad blood, they were doing it for sport. an officer reported seeing two kids wrestling by others watched. the group of middle schoolers were gathered when the officer approached. they all scattered in different direction. >> one of the middle schoolers wasn't able to get away and ended up talking to police and telling them what they had seen was a fight organized through a juvenile fight club. luckily, no one was hurt. >> i think it is really absurd. they're really young, too. >> you don't want to hear that's happening. i haven't heard it is

happening. >> reporter: while some seemed only mildly bothered, others chalked it up as boys being boys. >> boys need to get their aggression out. they need to do something with all of that pent up energy. it would be nice if they were doing athletics, might be a little more productive. i don't think it sounds so horrible. >> police aren't calling this a trend right now. they have very little information to continue an investigation into this. they say they'll make note of this and keep this case in the back of their minds. ken molestina, 9news now. today, the family of joe paterno along with several of his former players will attend a private funeral for the former penn state university football coach. yesterday, thousands of well- wishers waited for hours to pay their respects and walked past his casket. a public memorial celebration is scheduled for later this week. manuel gallegus has the story from state college, pennsylvania. hour after hour and into the evening, thousands of mourners filed into a public

viewing of former football coach joe pa turn know. some cried as they walked past a closed brown casket covered with white roses near a large photo of paterno. bryant johnson, hundred of hundreds. former players who went on to the nfl told us joe paterno is the reason he succeeded in life. >> he was a wonderful mentor. not only did he teach us the game of football but he taught us -- most of us came in as boys and left the university as men. >> also mike mcqueary, a key witness in the child molestation scandal that led to paterno's firing by the university. mcqueary said he did not want to talk out of respect for the coach. >> seems like a lot of people are -- interested to stand up for him now than a month ago. >> penn state officials say they're working on plans for a lasting way to honor the former coach. some alumni want to rename the football stadium joe paterno

money segment of the morning. and here are the headlines. appearle had a blowout quarter, profits surged 118%. the company sold more than 37 million iphones from october to december. apple's report was released after the closing bell and that has overseas markets heading higher. as for wall street, yesterday, worries that greece is moving closer to defaulting on its debt caused the dow to snap a five-day winning streak. dow standing this morning at 12,675. it was down 33 points in trading yesterday. nasdaq meantime was up by about two and a half and the s&p 500 was off by 1 1/3 points. investment bankers at bank of america will reportedly take a 25% pay cut. the reduction includes salary and bonuses. bank of america reported a second consecutive loss at its investment bank last quarter. macy's suing martha stewart's company over its deal with rival retailer jcpenney. macy's claim the new deal

you can see the heavy rains, the thunderstorms here. upper level storms coming into west texas hoping to provide the lift and the energy for all of the rains we'll be seeing moving up toward the east and the northeast. right now, we've got clear skies. the clouds out to the west and kentucky and southern west virginia, they'll stream in here later today. still not too bad. partly sunny here for the lunch hour. we'll see the clouds starting to increase here late this afternoon. tonight, the clouds will move in. by 11:00, maybe western maryland seeing a couple of rain showers. might mix with sleet early. we get toward tomorrow morning and there come the showers moving in from west to east. still through midday, sporadic. as we get into the afternoon and evening hours, that's when the rain will pick up some. tomorrow night, especially the rain will pick up into friday morning. 4:00 a.m. friday morning. notice some of the rains this morning. we'll get some colder air in

gmail, david jacobs said he's not happy at all about changes in the privacy policy. >> i think it makes it a lot harder for google users, such as myself, to control their personal data. >> as the consumer privacy fellow with the electronic privacy information center, jacobs says google's new policy makes him extremely nervous. >> this is google knowing basically everything about what you do and taking that information and making money off of it. >> according to jacobs, there are two especially troubling changes to google's privacy policy. first, the company's various entities including google search, gmail, map and youtube will now share information gathered about its users. >> they're going to know more about you than yourself. >> second, users won't have the option to opt out. in other words, not to have their information shared. >> it is not a meaningful choice. >> reporter: instead, their only option will be to stop

using google services altogether. >> google knows you're not just going to stop using it. >> which jacob says most people probably won't do. no matter how much theyton the new privacy policy. >> how is that legal? >> an opinion supported by people we spoke with outside the apple store in georgetown, people who said they don't like the new privacy policy but would not stop using google. >> gmail and serving too widespread. there is no way i would stop. >> it makes perfect sense. it makes no sense for me why i would want my information like that. >> the new policies go into effect march 1st. google executives declined a request for an interview. a neighborhood in leesburg is suing the loudoun county school board over a redistricting plan. the plan will transfer more than 50 children from a school they can see from their homes to a school miles away. the children now attend tolbert elementary. it would send them to frederick douglas elementary now under

construction. the lawsuit says the school board did not consider proximity or community and it ignored better options for student population and diversity. >> another board member said she voted for it because it made the most sense and no communities were slit up. well, that was false. >> there were nonpublic hearings. we did some hearings in leesburg. we put out notices in english and spanish well ahead of time. they were well-attended. all of the plans were posted on the web site. this was a fair boundary process. >> the school system's public information officer says in order for the board to reconsider the decision, it would have to redo the entire procedure including another four months of public hearings. a rapid form of radiation for early stage breast cancer may be easier on the patient but not necessarily a proven success. partial breast or radiation is done at the surgery site of a lumpectomy using a catheter. women go for five days, twice a day instead of the typical six to eight weeks of standard

welcome back. 4:55, your weather first. a cold morning out there. we've got 30s. we'll start out with some sunshine today as temperatures climb by noon to about 44. increasing clouds this afternoon with highs only about 45, 46. but the winds shouldn't be all that strong out of the west- northwest at about 5 miles per hour. right now, 4:56. here's monika samtani with timesaver traffic. >> we're taking a look live at 395 at the pentagon. no problems for the 14th street bridge. nice and light in the main and hov lanes heading up from the beltway. coming up, more on virginia roadways at 5:01. back to you. all eyes will be on the skies over washington april 17th. a flyover is planned for the space shuttle "discovery" before it lands at its new home at the national air and space museums center in chantilly. this is video from "discovery's" final flight. the shuttle will arrive at dulles international airport on the back of a boeing 747. an arrival ceremony is planned for april 19th.

a measure before the town council would allow horseback riding on the beach from november 1st all the way to march 30th. the hours would be from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and there would be a $50 fee. the goal is to help increase tourism during the off-season. council members are reportedly split on the issue. the cleanup is all i can think of. >> oscar nominations are out. there were a few surprises. >> ed lawrence has a preview of the award show on february 26th. >> hugo ran away with the most oscar nominations. 11 including best picture and best director. through the eyes of an orphan in paris, the movie tells the story of the early days of film making. the silent film the artist received ten nominations overall including best picture. also up for that honor, war- horse, the descendants, the tree of life, midnight in paris, the help, extremely loud and incredibly close and moneyball. >> text me the play by play. >> what?
