11-year-old girl is the latest victim in a string of crimes and apple is partly to blame. >> this is 9news now. and we begin tonight with smart phones that have become magnets, attracting trouble straight to you and everybody who has one. thieves grabbing phones right out of people's hands. >> for the second time in two days, a teenager has fallen victim and steps away from a school. ken molestina is live in dc where this happened. >> reporter: do you know what happened here today is part of a larger problem that is plaguing the district. according to police, that young girl was walking across fort reno, this park that you see behind me, when she had her phone out in her hand. her smart phone. police say a teen then came by, took it out of her hand and took off running. what happened here today, the details of it are similar to a case that happened yesterday. the girl who was robbed yesterday first told her story to old news 99.1 and today she's

telling us what happened. ♪ music playing >> reporter: alison and her middle school friends are normally a happy, worry free bunch. they're also quite the musicians. but these days, they're singing the blues. >> a guy came running from the side and snatched my phone and started running. >> reporter: that was tuesday right outside of the middle school in northwest dc. the 11-year-old and her friend claire were waiting on a bus when a teen snatched her phone. claire tried running after the thief who disappeared. >> i thought i could stop him. >> reporter: on wednesday police say it happened again to a different group of girls walking through fort reno, less than a block from where alison was robbed. the details were similar. the teen runs past them, grabs the phone and runs. they sell the phones on the black market. >> the suspects will keep your wallet, just give me your phone. >> reporter: the police chief says she's getting no help from cell phone companies. >> i talked to the head of security for apple and a few

others and said can't you disable these phones to take the profit out of the market for the bad guy, and they said we can, but we're about customer service. and we like to give customer service when they call and ask for the service. >> reporter: meanwhile, the middle schooler d her mom are stunned by the real world lesson alison had to learn the hard way. >> you sort of lose a little bit of innocence when you're a victim of a crime like this. >> we're 11. so it's like this is happening pretty early. >> reporter: here is a statement from apple's website. although apple does not have a process to track or flag lost or stolen products, it can use my support profile to find a list of serial numbers that have been purchased or registered with your apple id. now, a reminder to folks out there. cathy lanier is giving a reward of up to $10,000 for anyone who can give police information to whoever is behind this black market scene.

ken molestina, 9news now. >> thanks, ken. also controversy tonight surrounding the girl scouts in north virginia. a group says troops are no longer welcome. the church says the local girl scout troops cannot meet on church property anymore because the national organization is connected with planned parenthood. but the girl scout nation says that's not true. either way, they have until the end of the school year to find a new meeting place. a former frederick county sheriffs deputy is not libel for the death of gerald gray. today a federal jury ruled in favor of the county after gray's family filed a civil suit. the 20-year-old died after the deputy was shocked with a stun gun. gary's family allegings the deputy used -- alleges the deputy used excessive force. as scott broom reports, they walked away with tears and disappointment. >> i'm going to have to go to my

son's burial. >> reporter: his mother. >> he's not the first person and he's not going to be the last person to die. until they get it straight, you're going to see more family here. >> reporter: he died four years ago in in apartment complex after being jolted twice by a taser. the police officer was responding to a report of a fight. gray was tased a second time while he was laying face down on the ground because he did not respond to show his hands. it turned out, he was already unconscious. >> this is a tragedy. >> reporter: former corporal torres says the incident weighs heavily on him. experts testified he was following proper police procedure. >> tazers are a useful tool. they have saved many lives, much more than they've taken, if they've taken any at all. >> it's a very hard thing to do. >> reporter: the jury foreman said deliberations were emotional. >> you know, you can go back and say if this didn't happen, if this didn't happen, then this wouldn't have happened. you can play the what if game

cameras alone. but police insist they do what they're supposed to. slowing people down and saving lives. tonight legendary football coach joe paterno has been laid to rest. in a display worthy of a president, thousands lined the streets to witness the hearse carrying the man they call joe pa. forced out of his job in the wake of child sex abuse charges against a former assistant. there will be a final celebration at the basketball arena on campus tomorrow. paterno coached at penn state for 46 years and celebrated 409 wins. that's a record for major college football. president obama will be in sin city tomorrow selling the economic plans he outlined during the state of the union address. after his visit to las vegas, he'll make a stop in denver and then head to michigan on friday before returning to washington.

the president is fighting to convince skeptical voters concern about the economy to give him a second term. he started today by speaking at a plant in iowa hoping to show how his plan to change tax laws would benefit business owners and create jobs. >> we've got to stop rewarding businesses that ship job overseas, reward companies that are doing business right here in the united states of america. our economy is getting stronger. and we've come way too far to turn back now. [ cheers and applause ] >> meanwhile, the republicans running for the white house insist the president's policies have failed. they are taking aim at his call to raise the tax rate on people making more than a million dollars a year. all four gop candidates will meet in jacksonville for a debate tomorrow night, and that is just ahead of florida's primary next tuesday. at your child's cafeteria, the days could be numbered for mystery meat monday. school lunch is getting their biggest makeover in 15 years.

was intelligence that kidnappers might have been about to move them. caught on tape, a close call on the ice. a former washington caps player richard zednick was coaching some kids in slsvakia when take a look at this. the roof collapsed. it literally gave way under heavy snow. fortunately everyone managed to run to safety and nobody was hurt. also caught on tape, a bank bandit lookout who stuck his foot out and nearly shot it off. this is surveillance video of a bank heist in brazil. two guys go inside to demand the cash. a third partner stays near the interest. he's a lookout. he has a gun in each hand. one of them goes off hitting the man in the foot. all three bandits leave with the money, but later that night police pick up the one who is limping when he shows up at the hospital when his gunshot wound. >> pretty sure sign that something went wrong. >> yes. i think so. well, there was some outrage

tonight after this ad from the washington sports club was posted in today's washington examiner. if you take a close look, it reads paula, you made a fortune off of fat. call us if you want to be around to enjoy it. that is referring to paula deen who recently revealed she has type 2 diabetes after years of promoting decadent high calorie recipes to her fans. we got an e-mail of a viewer upset over the ad calling it horrible and offensive and so we pasted it on our facebook page. i'm tired of this snotty attitude i see folks having towards overweight folks. promoting people is good. it doesn't give people free reign to put others down. david posted it's funny and good natured. lighten up. but cc carter takes a tougher stance and saying being fat is unhealthy and unattractive. the truth hurts.

and there. nothing heavy. we get into the evening hours and now we have a larger concentration and more coverage of showers. they're all light but just enough to wet the roads, as you try to get home tomorrow night. after that, by 6:00 in the morning, 6:15 on friday, showers roll through and the good news is -- well, the bad news is it's going to be another wet commute. good news is they roll out quickly. we're going to have a great day on friday. overnight we're looking at clouds, chilly, some showers, more to the north and in the mountains. lows above freezing, 34-39. winds southeast 5-10. by morning some showers. 30s and 40s. nothing heavy. by afternoon, mostly cloudy. sort of cool. more showers and temperatures 45-50. winds increase a little bit southeast at about 10-15. all right. next seven days, showers early on friday. yes, that's a lightning bolt. but look at that, we salvage temperatures in the mid 50s on friday. we raised temps since last night on saturday and sunday. we're still in the upper 40s on
