that's going to be right near beel hill road. that's a look ott your timesaver traffic. -- at your timesaver traffic. next check at 5:09. back to you. thank you. this afternoon, brittany norwood is scheduled to be sentenced in a rockville courtroom. a jury convicted her of first degree murder in the killing of her co-worker jayna murray. >> norwood bludgeoned murray inside the store in march and tried to cover up the crime. delia goncalves is live outside the lululemon store in bethesda with more on the story. good morning delia. >> reporter: you know prosecutors describe an absolute nightmarish scene inside the store nearly a year ago around the time. they say murray was stabbed 331 times. they also say she was alive for each and every one of those stab wounds. now, brittany norwood is facing life behind bars without the possibility of parole for that march murder. prosecutors believe she lured jayna murray back to the store after hours and attacked her simply over a bag of stolen

clothes. at the time, norwood pretended to be a victim as well even tracking men's size 14 shoes in the murder scene to cover it all up. but police say her story kept on changing and it never added up. our andrea mccarren interviewed jayna's parents before the trial, here's what they had to say. >> horrible for us. it can't be easy for them. >> of all of the steps of grieving, i have yet to leave anger. i think if i had a chance to say something to her, it would be one word -- why? >> reporter: now jayna's mother writes the court for today's sentencing and an impact statement describabling their emotions after the arrest saying -- >> reporter: norwood's father writes quote --

>> reporter: coming up in a half hour, in my next live report, we'll have a mother's plea for mercy. the day her daughter is sentenced for murder. back to you jessica, andrea? >> thank you delia goncalves. live in bethesda. later today, police are expected to remove a body from a well found in fort washington. police received a tip which led them to the location in the 11,900 block of old fort road. officers lowered a camera down into the well and found the remains there. they haven't released any more information about the victim. alexandria police were also on hand but no official word as to what their role is in the investigation. and no word if charges will be filed against a driver who hit a woman last night near 17th and constitution near the national mall. the pedestrian wound up being trapped underneath the car. police have not released victim's name but say she suffered life-threatening injuries and don't know if she was in a crosswalk at the time

of the accident. the king's dominion rule will remain in place. yesterday they killed a proposal to call for schools to begin before labor day. lawmakers voted it down after listening to lobbyists speak against it. they represented vacation resorts, amusement parks and beach towns. educators say virginia's late start puts students at a disadvantage for advanced placement tests. the time flight 5:05 and i am watching your money. not such a bad place to start from on wall street. the reason why? the dow is less than 100 points away from its highest close since the 2008 financial crisis. we lost a little bit of ground yesterday on weaker reports on housing and economic growth and that reversed earlier gains on wall street. we'll see what happens today. now checking the numbers --

mortgage rates inched up from an all time low this past week according to freddie mac the average rate for a 30 year fixed loan rose to 9-point -- rather 3.98% from 3.88%. the 30 year rate has been below 4% for eight straight weeks. and another fast food restaurant jumping on the breakfast bandwagon. this week, taco bell is introducing a breakfast menu at about 800 of its restaurants in 14 states. it hopes to take its breakfast burritos and hash browns nationwide in all of its stores by 2014. breakfast has become the most important meal of the day for restaurants. it accounts for nearly all of the industry's growth in the past five years for big sales of breakfast over here. >> we love breakfast. >> we might have to try that out. >> okay and then the takeout delivery -- burger king who knows? joe paterno is remembered by thousands in the penn state community. and a beloved community

that may even develop a little bit of lightning and thunder in a little while. the temperatures will be warm in morning in the 60s and dropping to the 50s this afternoon. beverly? right now howard, we are checking on the new crash park police just arrived on the scene in laurel northbound on the baltimore washington parkway north of 197. apparently a vehicle rolled over and that's going to be on the right side of the roadway. northbound parkway. southbound so far no reports of response or problems getting through there. no early problems there. back to you. it is 5:09 and here's a look at some other things making news now. nearly 12,000 people packed an arena at penn state for a memorial service to football coach joe paterno. he died last sunday from lung cancer. former penn state football players spoke of paterno's commitment to the game, to his teams and to the university. they also talked about paterno's emphasis on education and preparing his players for a future after football. the southern environmental law center is out with its annual top ten endangered

immediately going -- start immediately going over to the graph i thinks graphics on live doppler 9000 hd. green, culpeper, madison county until 5:45. that's that cluster southwest of warrenton that's coming through and i want to take you through this. by the way we're concerned with the winds out of this that could gust 50, 60 miles per hour and that's why the weather service just issued the severe thunderstorm warning for those counties to the south and west. southwest includes culpeper rappahannock, all moving to the northeast. moving northeast at close to 60 miles an hour. we do have some of those lighter showers here which pushed through d.c. along route 50 over to annapolis and we'll kickly show you -- quickly show you that before we get to the south and west. these are some lighter showers here, this is route 50, this is route 301. this is quickly going to the northeast but it's the stronger severe thunderstorms out to culpeper right now that we're watching. so amosville, boston, this is all racing northeast and again

like 60 miles an hour. so warrenton. this will be on top of you in 15, 20 minutes. warrenton another five after that. the plains, haymarket, prince william county also. maybe the upper parts of prince william county as it's all moving in this direction. so watch out, you're going to get some heavy weather here. the actual front itself is coming through we've w right now. we're seeing this line from hancock now down toward cape and bridge. almost to the state line here and toward frederick county, virginia. cross junction. this stuff may get on top of you in about 15 or 20 minutes as well. so a very active morning out there. and as we look at the bigger picture you'll notice all of this sweeping off to the northeast. heavier weather's been up to the north and the south and southwest. that's the severe thunderstorm stuff come out of the charlottesville area and heavier rain also in p. a.. scattered showers out there, some thunder as well. temperatures range from the 40s far north and west to the low 60s in many areasment we're in the 50s here in d.c..

sunrise 7:19. the day planner, the threat for the showers and storms this morning. by midday we're starting to clear out. high temperatures somewhere in the low 60s but we're dropping to the lower 50s for the drive home and windy too. winds will turn to the northwest at 15 to 25. there's all the warmth feeding the showers and storms in the 60s. still some 30s and 40s well to the north and west but we sit at 54 here and as we look outside on the michael & son weather camera, you notice the rain drops on the lens there. and our current temperature 54 with just some light rain reported at reagan national. south-southwest at 14. but we're watching the severe storms to the south and west until 5:45. there may be other warnings closer to the metro as those storms get closer. 62, 63 before falling off this afternoon into the 50s. clearing and windy. tonight, into the 30sable still mild tomorrow, mid 50s but breezy. sunday a little colder mid 40s with partly sunny skies. monday the chilliest day at 40 while we're back in the 50s quickly on tuesday and by thursday, there could be a few

more showers. it's 5:16. beverly farmer's with some rough weather to the south and west and some wet streets now. absolutely, just on wet pavement. we've had issues with folks staying on their wheels northbound on the baltimore washington parkway. park police are with a crash northbound on laurel between 197, 198. initially the right side of the roadway was blocked and that's northbound against the rush hour flow if you will unless you have to catch a flight. you have to get to bwi take 94 right now north to the baltimore area. no reported incidents there. i-270 corridor, no early incidents as you head south out of frederick county into hyattstown. buildings vol bush building volume -- building volume. virginia drivers one vehicle broken down eastbound on 267 the connector road right near 123 in the travel portion of the roadway. so far 935 and 3935 just the wet -- 95 and 395 just the wet pavement and building volume. the next check of timesaver traffic at 5:29. back to you jessica. the d.c. council is talking about making some changes to taxi service in the district.

yesterday, councilwoman mary chay released the study and it found 76% of the more than 4,000 people who took part rated the city's cab system as fair or poor. and 52% say they want to see the quality of o service improve -- of service improve before any talk of raising cab fares. transit will still hear if the public before instituting its own fare hike but yesterday the board approved all the proposed rate increases on the table and that would raise the base fare a dime $1.70 on off peak hours, 15 cents to $2.10 during peak service and also eliminates the peak of the peak surcharge. and a heads-up for metro riders on the red line this weekend. at 10:00 tonight they will close the stations for the entire weekend. that so crews can work on replacing track circuits. metro will run a shuttle between van ness and dupont circle. the stations will reopen at

we are 5:22. looking at a severe thunderstorm warning down to the culpeper area until 5:45 also rappahannock counties down to warrenton. this is moving northeast at 60 and potentially we'll have winds that could gust towards 60 miles an hour. so watch out for that as it tracks up toward fauquier, prince william, counties here over the next 30 minutes or so. the rest of the morning we're going to see the showers and storms coming through here. through 9:00, temperatures 60. we'll get into the low 60s before dropping off here this afternoon. by noon, we're getting rid of the showers and storms and we'll see clearing skies. but colder temperatures and a good northwest wind through the afternoon. jessica and andrea, back to you. thank you howard. the washington wizards win a game for their new interim head coach. >> kristen berset has that

somebody help me down. good morning, welcome back to 9news now. i'm andrea roane. >> and i'm jessica doyle in for mike hydeck. on this friday morning. thank you for joining us. beverly farmer is in for monika. and we'll have timesaver traffic in a moment but we begin with this guy over here, howard bernstein. and your weather first. >> and we've got a severe thunderstorm warning -- i'm talking january, 5:30 in the morning severe weather. yes, i can't remember the last time this time of year this time of morning we've had severe warnings but we've got them right now and that's where we begin this morning. it's south and west of d.c. for orange rappahannock, green, culpeper, and madison counties, they are moving northeast at 60 miles per hour and could contain winds gusting towards 60. you'll notice in the charlottesville area that little line of orange, yellow and red that's moving northeast. that's that thunderstorm. there's another line -- severe thunderstorm. there it is just west of

culpeper now. this is the severe thunderstorm that's headed toward warrenton and fauquier county, then prince william county. maybe eastern loudoun and fairfax will have to watch out for this as well. since this is a pretty hefty storm. it goes until 5:45 on that warning and you can notice that stevensburg eventually once it gets beyond this there may be other warnings this morning but right now until 5:45 is when this goes to, another 15, 20 minutes or so. all right 60 degrees at 9:00 still with a showers and thunderstorms here. 62 by noon. and by 5:00 p.m., 52. it's going to get windy this afternoon and that will drop temperatures and you can see this little piece of coal still holding on from winchester north, hagerstown only 37. but look at all the warmth. la plata 62. pax river. 62. fredericksburg 64 and only 37 in hagerstown. i don't know if you folks are going to see the warmth but a lot of us will. a very mild day before turning colder this afternoon. watch out for the rough weather this morning. how about your commute? here's beverly farmer in for monika. certainly got the

it continues to be difficult nearly a year later. the prosecutors say brittany norwood murdered her manager inside the store here in bethesda. after hours. and then tied herself up, sitting there, next to that dead body for hours pretending to be a victim until the store opened the next day. prosecutors say that is a sign of a calculated killer. they want parole denied today for brittany norwood. her victim, jayna murray, was full of life. engaged to be married. and pursuing two masters' degrees, forensics experts say she was stabbed 331 times alive. for each of those brutal blows. at the time the horrific crime scene troubled even the most veteran homicide detectives. in a 9news now exclusive, jayna's parents spoke to us before her murder trial. >> we want the right decisions to be made for montgomery county and maryland. we want the right decisions to

be made for the citizens of bethesda. it happened there. it happened to them. >> whatever maryland decides, we have to accept. and we're ready for that. because we have to get -- we have to heal. >> reporter: norwood's mother writes the court asking the judge today to grant her daughter parole saying quote -- >> reporter: but jayna's father writes quote -- >> reporter: the judge has read nearly 20 pages of letters from brittany norwood's friends and family members asking for mercy. she's already been sentenced to a life sentence behind bars.

but now they're considering whether or not she'll get parole. coming up in a half hour, we'll tell you more on what the family had to say on behalf of brittany norwood. coming up in my next report. back to you. andrea, jessica? >> all right, delia goncalves with that live update. what should have been a routine traffic stop in northeast turned into a police shooting. it began around 7:20 yesterday evening near the 4400 block of popped street. authorities say two men were in a car which was pulled over when a shot was fired from an officer's weapon. one of the men was struck and is being treated. the second man in the vehicle ran away and police are still looking for him. no word on why the officer fired the weapon. the justice department has announced the indictment of a former corrections officer on charges related to the death of inmatron knee white. in this case -- inmate ronnie white. in this case, he was found dead in his cell two days later.

today, 48-year-old anthony mcintosh is being charged with deprivation of rights under color of law in connection with white's death. mcintosh, a former corrections officer, allegedly found white unresponsive in his cell and didn't get him care. authorities are also charging mcintosh with covering up his role in white's death. a former marine reservist has plead guilty to charges that he fired shots at the pentagon, the museum and quantico and other military targets. during a hearing thursday, prosecutors played video and audio recorded by yonathan melaku prior to the shootings. melaku agreed to a 25 year sentence in the case and scheduled to be formally sentenced on april 27th. we now know more about how the pentagon plans to cut nearly $500 billion in defense spending over the next decade. along with retiring older planes and trimming war costs the proposal calls for reducing ground forces by about 100,000.

defense secretary leon panetta insists a leaner force doesn't mean the u.s. will be any less prepared to handle multiple threats if needed. the time right now just about 5:35 exactly. actually. and i'm watching your money. a major factor behind the financial collapse of 2008 is getting a fresh look. the justice department has started a new fraud fighting unit. it brings together 55 prosecutors and federal and state investigators who plan to focus on the collapse of residential mortgage backed securities. attorney general eric holder and other officials will unveil details about this new unit later today. the president talked about it in the state of the union address on tuesday night. if you live in maryland, you may get some extra inspiration if you download angry birds to your smart phone in the coming months. this might make you mad. the "washington examiner" reports that the state wants to charge you a 6% sales tax on virtually every downloaded product like apps for your phone. the tax comes from an obscure

warrenton just about on top of you extending west to culpeper, really haven't seen it in culpeper proper. but all moving to the northeast. so fauquier county getting it. here's route 17 about to cross that. it's going to head across areas -- well, the warning just expired but it has not been extended yet and we'll see if they issue another one. here's warrenton and here's the plains over the hay market and gainesville. this is going to have to come across that route and even 29 this may mess you up and slow you down and watch out the winds with this could top 40, 50 miles per hour and here's another strong line of storms just lining up with i-71 now. west of hagerstown. west of martinsburg and just well north of it actually coming down toward cross junction. areas just west of winchester to where 64 and 66 come together around straussburg, also moving to the northeast at about 60 miles an hour. so active weather this morning. and i want to show you the big picture, you'll see how this is all going to come through here

and we still have some showers and potential storms across central west virginia. so we've got several hours that we'll be dealing with this. but as we get into the later morning hours, midday, things going to calm down. and temperatures will also drop off. but this morning, scattered showers, some storms out there as well. mild, anywhere from the low to mid-40s north and west and central out and north to the low 60s in most areas right now. sunrise 7:19. the only reason we have 54 at reagan national is because the winds off the water keeping it a little bit cooler. low 60s by noon but look we're going to drop off as winds become northwesterly. they could gust 20 to 30 this afternoon. 57 by 3:00 and only 50 by 6:00 and we'll be back in the 30s by saturday morning. look at these temperatures, you won't see this very often when you have a 61 in sterling but a 45 in leesburg. and lovettsville probably also in the low 40s not reporting right now. lots of 60s like alexandria, 60. 59 arlington. college park. 63. columbia 58 and here in washington as we look at the

to start to clear out and in the mountains, colder atries to filter in. we could be talking some snow showers for the afternoon. drop to about 50 for the drive home after the low 60s this morning. tonight, clear, chilly. we'll be down in the 30s. a few clouds around at times on saturday. ahead of another frontal boundary which pushes this way. by midday, we're okay dry but rain and snow showers returning to the mountains here for the afternoon and evening. might see a slight chance of a shower north saturday afternoon with that next front. and that will cool us down even more by sunday. so today 60s, tomorrow 50s and sunday in the 40s. looking at your forecast, we've got temperatures today this morning anyway low 60s maybe as warm as 63 before dropping this afternoon. clearing out. windy. colder. low 50s for the drive home. saturday after starting in the 30s we're in the mid 50s. sunday, mid 40s for highs. which is about average. average high is 44. we get close to it sunday. monday it looks cold but then tuesday back in the 50s.

we're starting with live doppler 9000 hd, because we've had some strong thunderstorms here had a warning earlier on the culpeper area for this line of storms now inching its way in toward prince william county. i say inching, these things are moving like 60 miles an hour. that's an understatement. here in the metro just a couple a couple of sprinkles, but i want to focus on this area off to our west. this is getting now close to its southern loudoun and western fairfax. here's aldi. so this is route 15 coming into 66. pretty strong line of weather. heavy downpours, some gusty winds. sort of following route 29 there through culpeper on the west side and madison as well as it's going through warrenton. you folks in manassas, this is now on your doorstep along with may market as it is -- hay market as it's all moving to the northeast. this is about to enter your area here as it all marches east. this is weaker than it was when the warning was allowed toenings pyre at 5:45. another heavy line of weather coming through the hagerstown area right now.
