good morning everybody. thanks for joining us. i'm betty nguyen. mitt romney used deep pockets and more aggressive tactics to swamp newt gingrich in the florida primary. heading into saturday's nevada caucuses, romney is already talking like the gop nominee as gingrich vows to fight on. it was a decisive win for romney, fueled in part by female voters who overwhelmingly supported romney. romney picked up 50 delegates in florida gichg him an estimated total of 80. gingrich has 24. it takes 1144 to clinch the nomination. susan mcginnis has more from tampa. good morning, susan. >> reporter: good morning, betty. romney grabbed 42% of the vote here in florida easily beating newt gingrich and making romney the man to beat in the race to chatening president obama. >> mitt romney's already talking like the gop nominee. >> my leadership will end the obama era and begin a new era of

american prosperity. >> last night, the former massachusetts governor cruised to victory in florida, taking nearly half of the vote. he thanked his supporters before blasting president obama. >> mr. president, you were elected to lead. you chose to follow and now it's time for you to get out of the way. >> florida marched his second primary win. he's expected to get secret service protection by wednesday. the only current candidate to have it. >> despite winning less than a third much the vote, newt gingrich is vowing to go on. he spoekd at a podium saying 46 states to go. >> we are going to contest every place and we're going to win. we'll be this tampa as the no, ma'am me in august. >> for the first time this election season, exit polls show a gender gap. female voters backed romney in droves helping him to a double digit win. rick santorum and ron paul skipped florida to campaign out west. santorum urged opponent to ease

up on their attacks. >> what we saw in the last few weeks in the state of florida will not help us win the election. >> paul, who finished fourth, called romney after his win. >> i honestly congratulated him. he ran a good campaign. but i also said i would see him soon in the caucus states. >> romney is expected to do well in the next five contests, beginning with the nevada caucuses on saturday. so now it's onward to nevada where romney is expected to win again. but with newt gingrich promising to take this all the way to the convention, some worry that a protracted battle could hurt the republicans' chances of beating barack obama. >> there has been a lot of talk about that. susan, thank you. exit polls indicate about half the florida voters said the most important factor for them was backing a candidate who could beat president obama. and 69% of those asked said the recent debates played a role in their vote. 60% of those who voted for mitt

romney said his blistering ad campaign was an important factor. chief washington correspondent bob schieffer has more on that part of the campaign. >> romney got himself a debate coach, he took a more aggressive tone but the overwhelming thing here is they dumped a mountain of negative advertising on newt gingrich that worked against gingrich out in iowa and it certainly worked against gingrich here in florida. so mitt romney comes out of this, he hasn't sewn up the nomination, but the wind is certainly going to be in newt gingrich's face as he moves on from here. he says he'll stay in it until the very end but his road is more uphill from now. >> bob schieffer. later on, "cbs this mornng," we'll hear more from bob plus a live interview with mitt romney. now to alaska, where scientists are keeping a close watch on a remote volcano that

could erupt at any time. the cleveland volcano is located about 950 miles southwest of anchorage. the warning level has been raised after a new lava dome began forming. officials say if the volcano erupts, ash clouds could soar 20,000 feet into the air, threatening aircraft. wikileaks founder julian assange takes his fight to britain's supreme court today. he's wanted in sweden on allegations of sex crimes. he denies the charge. two other attempts to block his extradition have failed. a decision is not expected for several weeks. on cbs money watch, american taxpayers are still on the hook for the government-backed bailouts and is today the day for a facebook ipo announcement? ashley morrison has more on that. >> good morning, betty. a lot of chatter there. facebook could file paper as early as today for an initial public offering of stock. it will be one of the most anticipated ipo's since google

shares started trading in 2004. facebook is expected to raise as much as $10 billion which would value the company at 75 to $100 billion to give you some perspective on what this could mean to investors when linked in went public last year, the price per share doubled. even if facebook files today, it won't start trading for a few more months. checking overseas market, a mixed day in asia. the nikkei finished higher, up a fraction while the hang seng lost about half a percent. it was also a mixed day on wall street. the dow jones slipped 20 points while the nasdaq stayed mostly flat. despite that, it was still the best january for stocks in 15 years. amazon.com disappointed investors on tuesday. the online repted a 57% drop in quarterly earnings. sales were also a billion dollars shy of estimates. free shipping deals over the

>> the video. when police responded to a call in southeastern new jersey, they found a car engulfed in flames and despite the fire and dense smoke, you see this dashboard camera video shows that they managed to wrench the door open and pull out an unconscious 57-year-old man. the victim was taken to a hospital where he was treated for smoke inlaying. the pentagon says that since may of 2007, afghan government troops have attacked u.s. and nato forces 45 times, killing 70 and wounding 110. this comes from testimony prepared for delivery this morning in congress. it says some of the inside attackers were insurgents who infiltrated afghan security but most had personal motives. in the senate testimony, top u.s. intelligence officials warned of an increasing threat from iran. testifying yesterday, they said iran is now capable of building a nuclear weapon but has not decided to proceed just yet. they also believe iranian

leaders are now more willing to order attacks on u.s. soil. in response to perceived threats in washington. >> now to syria and the debate over what to do about it. secretary of state hillary clinton made the u.s. position clear yesterday. syria's president must go. but russia does not agree. here's the report. >> hillary clinton arrived at the united nations to back a resolution demanding the immediate ouster of syrian president bashar al assad. >> we all have a choice. stand with the people of syria and the region or become complicit in the continuing violence there. >> western and arab countries are pushing for the plan to hand overpower to the vice president. assad would have sa days to step down. if he doesn't, the security council could take what it calls further measures, including economic sanctions. russia, which has veto power,

objects to the resolution saying it could lead to civil war or eventual military strikes like the nato led bombings. >> the role of the international community should not be one of exacerbating conflict or meddling by the use of economic sanctions or military force. >> the united nations estimates more than 5400 syrians have been killed since the government cracked down on protesters last march. the battle intensified monday when rebel forces captured two suburbs of the capital city of damascus. by early tuesday, government troops retook the towns. rebel groups estimate around 100 people have died this week. >> translator: syria's ambassador to russia said assad has no plans to step down. >> he said the protesters are nothing more than terrorists carrying out a foreign plot. cbs news, the united nations. while most of the u.s. is

degrees. in southern california, a veteran school teacher is in jail charged with sexually abusing more than 20 young students. 61-year-old martin bernt will be arraigned on 23 counts of lewd act on children. he blindfolded boys and girls ages six to ten, taped their mouths shut, put cockroaches on their faces and took pictures of himself with them. if convicted he faces life in prison. the nation's largest breast cancer charity, susan g. komen for the cure is cutting off the partnership with planned parenthood. that means they will stop receiving funding for breast cancer screening and education programs from the komen organization which totals $700,000 last year. a spokeswoman says it's because planned parenthood is under investigation in congress. the komen group denies it's --

>> in health news, a new study on treating breast cancer found that some women may be undergoing more surgery than necessary. elaine quijano has that story. >> the first year in the roughest. >> when donna learned she had breast cancer in 2008, she chose a lumpectomy to remove her tumor and preserve as much of her breast as possible. just one month later, she had to undergo a second procedure. >> we didn't believe there was any more cancer cells, but to be safe was to remove it. >> one out of four breast cancer patients have the same experience as moran owe. it raises questions about when whether the second surgeries are necessary. >> lumpectomy and the decision for a second operation fairly uniform across the country and we found that it wasn't. >> surgeons try to remove the entire tumor and get a clean margin. that means there are no cancer cells in the tissues surrounding the tumor.
