worst case of soccer violence since 1996. on wednesday, at least 74 people were killed and hundreds more hurt when fans rioted on the field and in the stands of a soccer stadium along egypt's mediterranean coast. this morning, many in egypt are pointing fingers at the military leadership of the country. the violence started in the moments after an upset victory by the home team. fans stormed the field after egypt's team was defeated. supporters of the home team threw rocks, bottles, fireworks. some chased rival fans and players from the field. police officers stationed at the stadium are being criticized for failing to control the crowd. this man's brother was one of the victims. he says the central security forces were watching everything but nobody moved a muscle. the riot was one of the worst outbreaks of violence since last year's anti-government protest that swept hosni mubarak from

power. >> translator: the head of egypt's military council told reporters that the incident would not affect egypt and it security. hundred of people gathered at the train station to greet some of those injured in the riot and to chant anti-government slogans. members of egypt's newly elected parliament are denouncing the military council. the military allowed the riot to get out of hand in order to justify its police power. nato defense ministers meet in brussels this morning and the withdrawal of combat troops from afghanistan is expected to top the agenda. defense secretary leon panetta said the u.s. role may end a year earlier than expected. speaking on his plane headed to europe, panetta said "hopefully by mid to the latter part of 2013, we'll be able to make a -- all nato members were supposed to keep forces in afghanistan

until 2014. the war in afghanistan has dragged on for more than a decade. efforts to suppress the taliban have cost over 1700 u.s. lives. and according to a u.s. military report shall the taliban is far from done. david martin has that part of the story. >> reporter: the report classified secret entitled "state of the taliban, 2012" makes for discouraging reading for anybody who thinks it's a spent force. it states that though the taliban suffered severely in 2011, its strength, motivation, funding and tactical proficiency remain intact. prisoners, of course, are not the most reliable source. but the sheer weight of numbers, 27,000 interrogations of more than 4,000 prisoners, held at paragraph wan prison in afghanistan gives the report the ring of truth. the prisoners acknowledge they

have lost ground in the south of afghanistan and are no match for american troops. u.s. force levels are going down from a high of 100,000 to the current 89,000 to 68,000 by september. the prisoners say they are encouraged to fight on by america's supposed ally. pakistan and its intelligence service known as i.s.i. as the report put, the officers tout the need for continued jihad and ex pumgs of foreign invaders fra afghanistan. isi is aware of the whereabouts of all taliban personnel. senior leaders meet regularly with isi personnel who advise on strategy. a captured al qaeda commander put it more bluntly. pakistan knows everything. they control everything. i can't go to the bathroom without them watching. if there's any encouraging news in this document, it's that the taliban believes al qaeda is

indeed a spent force and doesn't work with them much anymore. david martin, cbs news, the pentagon. rescue efforts are under way in the south pacific this morning where a ferry sank off the coast of new guinea. it was traveling to the mainland in rough weather when it capsized. it's reported there were 350 people on board. more than 230 have been rescued. now to politics. mitt romney is in hot water over comments he made about poor people in this country. and newt gingrich is expected to get a big name endorsement today. tara mergener is in washington with details on all of that. good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning, betty. donald trump is expected to give gingrich the nod today, which will no doubt bring a blitz of immediate attention in time for the contest saturday. newt gingrich and donald trump could soon be teaming up on the campaign trail. sources tell cbs news the billionaire businessman is

expected to endorse the former house speaker in las vegas today. the two met in new york city last december, but it was one of several meetings the reality tv king had with with candidates. trump's backing before the caucuses could help gingrich bounce back from his florida loss. gingrich will continue courting voters in nevada today but he won't be the only one. >> i'm so happy to be back in nevada. >> front-runner, mitt romney, is also in the state and trying to recover from comments he made wednesday about the poor. >> i'm not concerned about the very poor. we have a safety net there. if it needs repair, i'll fix it. i'm not concerned about the very rich, they're doing fine. >> both democrats and republicans immediately jumped on romney's statement. they suggested it's another example of how the former massachusetts governor is out of touch with americans. romney spent all day wednesday trying to clarify his remarks. >> that's not exactly what i meant to say. my focus is on middle income

americans. we do have a safety net for the very poor and i said if there are holes in it, i want to correct that. >> gingrich is using it as ammunition already. >> i am fed up with politicians in either party dividing americans against each other. >> romney currently holds a big lead over gingrich in nevada. one poll shows him ahead by as much as 20 points. and ron paul and rick santorum will also be campaigning in nevada today. they're trailing far behind in the polls. betty? >> tara mergener in washington this morning. thank you. congressional republicans are opposed to president obama's plan to make it easier for homeowners to refinance their homes. the president unveiled his s.h.a. refinancing plan in virginia yesterday. the government would assume the risk for mortgages. it would not apply to borrowers who are behind on loan payment. the president wants to pay for the program by imposing a fee on large banks. the state of washington is

one step closer to legalizing same sex marriage. last night the senate narrowly approved a bill making washington the seventh state to allow same sex couples to we had. the house is expected to pass the bill and the governor is expected to sign it as a law. once the bill becomes law, opponents say they will challenge it by calling for a referendum. planned parenthood received more than $400,000 in donations since it found out that it's losing funding from the world's largest breast cancer charity. the susan g komen foundation said it's not political. they donated $700,000 last year to planned parenthood. komen cut it off because of pressure from anti-abortion rights groups. coming up, shedding light on the dark side of the moon. plus, california woman drives off with a legal victory against the automaker honda. this is the "cbs morning news."

. this new nasa video could use a little pink floyd music, don't you think? here's why. it's the dark side of the moon. a rugged landscape of mountains and craters never seen from earth. the video was reported by one of two nasa spacecraft now orbiting the moon to match its gravitational field and help scientists learn how it was formed. it's official. facebook is going to wall street. the social media site filed papers with the securities and exchange commission to begin selling shares of its stock to investors. facebook hopes the ipo will help raise $5 billion. the filing revealed facebook as profitable and getting stronger. shares could start selling in three to four months. speaking of business, ashley morrison is here with the rest of the business headlines. good morning, ashley. >> reporter: good morning betty.

checking markets. tokyo's nikkei finished higher. .75 of a percent. the hang seng rose nearly 2%. wall street started february out on a strong note. the dow added 83 points while the nasdaq gained 34. american airlines is looking to eliminate about 13,000 jobs. the cuts would impact maintenance workers, flight attendants and 400 pilots. american is trying to emerge from bankruptcy by slashing labor costs by 20%. the airlines also proposing to end pension plans and to stop paying for retiree health benefits. indiana is now the 23rd state with the right to work law. governor mitch daniels signed the legislation yesterday to the dismay of union employees. the law prohibits employees from collecting mandatory fees from workers. supporters say it will help create more jobs. a california woman took on honda in court and won and now she's trying to get others to do the same and ditch a class

action suit against the car maker. the woman sued honda in small claims court saying she was misled about the fuel economy of our hybrid car. she was awarded nearly $10,000. much more than she would have gotten in a proposed class action set ament. in the 200,000 others choose to do the same, honda could be on the hook for as much as 2 billion d. there's a big difference there. >> a whole lot of gas money. thank you, ashley. david letterman celebrates 30 years of late night laughs. in sports, the biggest win of the season so far for the hard charging 76ers.

on cbs, david letterman celebrated the 30th anniversary of his late show and naturally, there was a special top ten list. top ten things letterman staffers wanted to say to him. they were mostly rude including number one delivered by his bandleader and sidekick. >> paul schafer, ladies and gentlemen, 30 years, 1982. >> i got nothing to say to that [ bleep ]. >> there you go, ladies and gentlemen. how about that for congratulations. after thanking the staff, letterman introduced howard stern who appeared on the showman i times. letterman showed a photo from 1984. stern suggested that he burn it. now to sports. miami against the bucs in milwaukee. early on, lebron james looked like he could win it for the heat by himself, including a huge jam late in the first

quarter. james scored 40 in the game. that was not enough. milwaukee's jennings came on strong with 31 points including three-pointers. the bucs win 105-97. ? in philadelphia the 76ers blocked a shot by derrick rose and followed with a fast break. it was finished with a flourish. they beat the bulls 98-82. their fourth straight win. in college hoops, texas a&m hosted baylor and the aggie gave the bears a run for their money with 29 seconds left. baylor's jackson responded with a three-pointer. the aggies could not score and the bears went on to their 20th victory. 63-60. finally, boxing trainer angelo dundee, muhammad ali's long-term corner man has diedment dundee was there for all of ali's most famous fights in the 1960s and '70s.

controversial operation run by the bureau of alcohol, tobacco and firearms. it allowed hundreds of weapons to be smuggled into mexico in hopes of tracing them to criminal gangs. in health news, a controversy over sugar. the medical researchers say it's just as bad for your health as tobacco and alcohol. and should be regulated in the same way. terrell brown has that story. >> reporter: we all know too many sweets pack on the pounds. but they're too hard to resist often. >> i love sugar. >> a commentary in the latest issue of nature says sugar is responsible for the high rates of obesity, diabetes, heart disease and cancer and should be regulated. >> because of the way sugar is metabolized in the liver. it will turn it into fat, causing insulin resistance and all of the diseases of metabolic syndrome. >> the author says it's time to put restrictions on sugar similar to the ones on tobacco and alcohol. >> what if we had an age limit
