in the mailbag tonight more reaction to our story yesterday regarding efforts in maryland to stretch out the time between license renewals for drivers. the mva says that will save them some money, but some are worried it might also allow older drivers with failing skills to stay on the road longer, perhaps even a little too long. sharon from frederick shares
7:26 pm
that concern. our family had made the hard decision to tell our mom she could no longer drive and needless to say mom was not happy and weeks went by with the silent treatment. if the states would require older drivers to take a test after the age of 80, it would help prevent accidents. i'm 62 and when i get to the ripe older age of 80, i'd welcome some sort of testing to prove to my kids i'm still capable of driving or to wake me up to the fact that i'm not. we get similar sentiments from john down in lorton, virginia. operating a motor vehicle is a privilege, not a right. older drivers have to be able to demonstrate they can still respond to all of the inputs of modern cars and properly navigate all the hazards of the road today or they should stop driving. local motor vehicle departments have to budget their services to cover testing as it's needed. expecting grown children to parent their parents is abdicating a serious responsibility. it will cost lives. after a couple days of this i'm thinking the message from a lot
