area, word of an underage drinking party is just a police radio call away. 9 wants you to know it is getting worse, and the kids drinking are getting younger. over the last 2 months, our colleague andrea mccarren has that learned first time by working with police. tonight she's live in bethesda where they're running one of the dui checkpoints. >> reporter: well, we were riding with police when officers received a report of teenage drinking inside of a bethesda home. and as you're about to see, after word of the party spread on facebook, within hours it had spiraled out of control. >> we took off. >> jump. >> reporter: when we arrived with police , teenagers scatter. running from all sides of the house. >> hold up. >> reporter: and bounding down the stairs of a balcony. >> oh, my god. hey, everybody.

pay attention. is everybody clear now? >> yes. >> does everybody understands what happens when you run from me or any other officer? >> yes. >> lie down. relax. you get up again, i'm going to put you down again. >> reporter: what appears to be blood on the stairs is actually a crushed pomegranate. but teenage girls with mini skirts and mass chara stained faces -- mascara stained faces start to cry. this is what an under age party looks like. it happened in bethesda. >> back inside. lett go. >> reporter: and involved students from walt whitman high school. but it could have unraveled in any suburban neighborhood where an unsuspected parent is out of town and they leave a house and an unsupervised teenager. >> there are many we could be dealing with, and we're dealing with 70, 80, 90 juveniles who decided to get high and drink. >> reporter: police handcuffed teens that att ed to flee and

lined them up at the curb. some are belligerent. combative. their anger in some cases directed at us. >> i asked them to get out. i didn't give my permission. >> stand up. >> now you have a charge, my friend. >> reporter: a defiant teenage girl criticizes police. >> when your house is being broken into in a couple weeks, you can blame it on the underage drinking party. >> reporter: the smell of marijuana fills the air. roughly 80 teenagers left the house in shambles. >> it looked like it was ram sacked. >> reporter: police issued 35 alcohol citations. >> empty liquor bottles. beer cans. we found some drug paraphernalia in there. >> reporter: most of the party goers are 16 years old. five years from the legal age. >> do you have the ability to put in a gps to take custody of

your daughter. >> reporter: a night of chaos gets more interesting when parents come to pick up their children. >> what's going on? >> reporter: a few simply hug their sobbing daughters but many more mouth off at police, threaten lawsuits and question that their children were doing anything illegal. >> she came to this party here and she was drinking. >> okay. you saw her drinking? >> no. but she took a preliminary breath test and she blew .109. she had alcohol in her system. she admitted to it. >> reporter: some children refused to ideal their identity. >> we have to notify your parents. >> reporter: many parents arrive angry and disgusted, not at their intoxicated children. >> i'm sorry. >> reporter: but at police. and on this night at us. >> why do you have cameras on so many kids. >> because they're with us. >> i was told they were with the news. >> we are with the news. >> reporter: only one mother appears furious at her son.

mccarren, 9news now. >> oh, man. i get more flabbergasted every ny. thank you. and by the way, something unusual happened after this particular party. in a controversial move, the principal of walt whitman high punished a lot of these students. tomorrow morning dr. goodwin explains why he thought it was so important to take that action. anita. new at 11:00, police are investigating the stabbing of a man dressed as a woman in northeast washington. a knife still in his head, he was taken to a hospital where at last report he was in grave condition. gary nurenberg has the latest. >> reporter: metro police tell 9news now that the stabbing happened at about 8:00 tonight in the 4900-block of east capitol street at this bus stop where a man dressed in women's clothing apparently had an altercation with another individual, a black male in his 40s wearing a striped hat and a black coat. that suspect allegedly stabbed the

the person in the head. she fell down. medical assistance was brought right away. she was transferred to the hospital and it was not until she was on the hospital when doctors determined it was not a woman but a man. the investigation is in its very early stages and we're unprepared to talk to 9news now a few minutes ago about the details of what happened. back to you. >> thank you, gary. an unrelated case earlier today, russell smith was sentenced to 15 years in prison for attacking a transgender woman in broad daylight in northwest washington last summer. the 26-year-old tried to steal the victim's purse but when she refused, he pulled her hair, punched her into the head and tried to pull her into an alley. they convicted him with assault with attempt to rob. traffic is now back open on the inbound lanes of new york avenue northeast after an accident. it started with police tried to pull over a suspected drunk driver. the chase then crossed over into

the district and finally ended with the driver of a pickup crashing near new york and florida avenue. as many as two other vehicles were damaged in this accident. luckily nobody got hurt. a local teacher yanked out of the classroom over charges he had sex with a 16-year-old student. he is scott duane spear, and the montgomery county police say on two occasions he had sex with a girl that he used to teach and later coached. spears has been teaching history at julius west middle school and coaching track and basketball. now he's on leave pending the outcome of the charges. and a second man has been arrested in the killing of a man. ivan new man now charged with killing lenny harris. an anonymous tip led to his remains in the bottom of a well. we spoke with harris's widow who

said she still can't believe her husband of 19 years is gone. >> it's like a piece of your heart was torn. it was like he left my body. and that was it. >> another suspect linwood johnson was arrested on tuesday. now, police believe robbery was the motive, and they expect to arrest several more people in this case. a marine private who once tried to commit suicide says it's wrong for the military to prosecute troops for such an act. 2 years ago he pleaded guilty to deliberately injuring himself by slitting his wrist. he was sentenced to jail and a bad conduct discharge. but he's now fighting that conviction. now, the military says such prosecutionings help maintain good order -- prosecutions help maintain good order in the armed forces. two people were killed in egypt during clashes with

police. protestors were upset at officers accusing them of failing to stop yesterday's deadly riots after a soccer game. they marched through the streets to bury the dead from the soccer massacre. at least 74 people killed. many of them suffocated or crushed trying to escape through a narrow exit. others were literally thrown from the top of the bleachers or attacked with knives and rocks. some politicians believe the security laps was intentional to fuel chaos in that nation after last february 's fall of the president. the nevada primary now just two days away and donald trump is jumping in there. the real estate mogul who flirted with his own presidential bid is now throwing his support around mitt romney. now, until just a few hours before the announcement, there was some indication that he was going to endorse newt gingrich instead. gingrich's campaign leaked word

that he was going to support them. recent polls give santorum 11% of the poll and paul 9%. they're third and fourth respectively. and house speaker john boehner is taking aim at white house rules that include religious organizations to include birth control. that is just plain unconstitutional. the health department recently announced the policy and it offers an exemption to employers whose primary mission -- that does not exempt catholic universities or hospitals. on tape, some dramatic dash-cam video from a deadly metro bus crash. this happened back in december and it happened on rockville pike at alta vista road. you can see the video shows a pickup truck crossing the median and slamming head on to the bus. the pickup truck driver was killed. at least 10 people on board the bus were hurt, including the driver. metro has praised that driver's quick reaction in steering the bus off the side of the roadway.
