weather. weather wise we've got a cold start this morning. clear skies out there. 38 degrees at reagan national. by noon sunny, 46. we finish out the day at 50 degrees after topping in the lower 50s. our satellite and radar combine from overhead, it's clear out there this morning. so we're going to see a nice sunrise and we're down to 28 in manassas. 27 in oakland. petersburg 28. lots of low 30s in most areas except for down in southern maryland along the bay and in town where we have the upper 30s. you factor in the winds and wildz chills, as cold as 25 in gaithersburg. not a lot of windchill but something to keep in mind as you decide whether or not you're going to wear the light or heavier glofers. let's go to monika samtani. good morning. if you're planning to head outside right now, we do have word of one accident that i want to tell you about on the inner loop of the beltway here at route 50. sky 9 is looking for it as we speak. it could be on the ramp from route 50 to the inner loop or on the beltway itself.

even though there's been plenty of backlash, we're talking hate mail and even a resignation at komen there have been some perks. folks over at komen say its donations are up by about 100% and just about the past day. while new york's mayor michael bloomberg admonished komen, he gave $250,000 to planned parenthood. 19 planned parenthood clrngs across the country -- clinics across the country have received komen money to provide breast cancer exams and mammograms to uninsured women but a new komen policy means they no longer donate to organizations under investigation. >> unfortunately i think this was a political decision and there are groups that have an extreme agenda who have been bullying the komen foundation and trying to get them to end their relationship with planned parenthood. contrary gl contrary to what some are saying, we are not pulling any existing grants. current grants are not

affected. as we move forward, we will implement these new strategies which will allow us to serve even more women. we will never bow to political pressure. >> reporter: komen's founder goes on to say that abortions performed at planned parenthood had nothing to do with this decision, even though that has been part of the controversy here. it is important to note that this clinic here on 16th street and l in downtown d.c. has never received funding from komen so it's not affected by this clinic is taking a stand against the decision. we'll tell you who else here in washington is also taking a stand against komen coming up in a half-hour. mike? >> thanks, delia. delia live this morning in northwest washington. we'll see you in just a bit. kang 9 we want to note -- channel 9 we want to note had been a partner with komen and the race for the cure many years. komen serverred that relationship late last year. new at 6:00 a.m., more than 20 people are forced from their homes this morning by a fire. this was the scene overnight

along 6th street and n streets northwest. the d.c. fire association reports on twitter the fire began on the first floor. more than 60 firefighters responded to the blaze. one person was treated for smoke inhalation. doctors are trying to save a transjennerred woman -- transgendered woman stabbed in the head. a man dressed in women's clothing had an altercation with another man on east capital street and then that second man stabbed the victim in the head. police are releasing few other details about the case. montgomery county police are asking for help finding a 14-year-old and her 6-month-old baby. shaney cox and her daughter were last seen yesterday along georgian way in wheaton. police and family want to check on the baby's welfare and say she may need medical attention. 6:04. time to check campaign 2012. we're just 24 hours away from the republican caucus in

nevada. this could wind up being the first back-to-back set of wins for mitt romney. a poll of likely caucusgoers show 45% back the massachusetts governor. 25% support newt gingrich. just 11% at this point support rick santorum and 9% for ron paul. about one in ten voters say they're undecided. mitt romney says he misspoke wednesday when he was talking about the economy and he said that his quote that he was not very concerned about the very poor because they have a safety net, he said that was a misspeak. romney's campaign says the candidate is focused mostly on helping middle class americans who are hurt by the economy. this is no joke. rose anbar -- roseanne barr is running for presidency. she wants the green nomination for the party. she now runs a macadamia farm in hawaii. the green party is going to hold its convention in baltimore coming up in july. 6:05. jessica doyle is here with a special your money report. >> she is. heads up for people who use

your debit cards. you might not want to use them everywhere. >> they're great. we love them. but there are risks to actually using them. credit cards, debit cards, they may look alike but they're not twins. shoe not treat all plastic the same way. a little refresher. a debit card is linked directly to your bank account. even they come with fraud protection, in reality those protections don't work exactly the same way as credit cards. for example, it can take a lot longer to be reimbursed for fraud on a debit card. bank rate.com reports these four places can be riskier than others when you're using debit. for example, an outdoor atm. the reason why? the skimmers that thieves insert into the card reading slot that steal your information so you're better off using that debit card at an inside atm. another danger zone. gas stations. again this is a skimmer issue. thieves have been known to add a pinpoint camera to the gas pump so they can capture your pin number when you enter it. then they have full access to all of the cash in your

account. a security expert tells bank rate that online transactions can be the riskiest way to use your debit card. the risks look mall ware that -- malware that could be on your computer, hacking attacks on the merchant's end and restaurants, bank rate says it's never a good idea to hand over your debit card in a situation where your card will ever be out of your eyesight. at the end of the day debit cards are great. but just a couple of things to keep in mind when you're deciding which plastic to reach for. >> it's funny, too because i sort of get that brain freeze. which one should i use when somebody asks, credit or debit. >> wow. scary. thank you, jess. when it comes to facebook we are selfish. a new study is out that finds while 40% of us make a friend request each month, 63% of us get one. over the same month-long study, the average user clicked the like button on friends content

the school's principal. andrea mccarren shows us how dr. alan goodwin is trying to keep his students safe. >> if i tell you to call your mom and dad, you're going to call your ma'am and dood. >> there's definitely peer pressure, a need to fit n. there are some students that rationalize that they deserve to relax because they're under so much academics and family stress. >> we're dealing with 70, 80, 90 juveniles who decided to get high and drink. >> reporter: when walt whitman high school principal goodwin learned about the bust, he didn't hesitate to can't. >> i have a standard practice that if students are cited, that i give them some sort of consequence at school. athletes miss a couple of games. student leaders and musicians and others, we negotiate with the coaches and sponsors to try to figure out what the right punishment will be. >> reporter: the montgomery county school system lets

individual principals decide whether illegal activity off campus deserves on campus punishment. >> it's an extra effort and it's -- can be confrontational. it is off school grounds. we have a very strict zero tolerance if an offense occurs on school grounds. >> reporter: unlike the party in december during when ch an unsuspecting parent was out of town. police and school administrators are seeing a disturbing trend. parents actually hosting underage parties in their homes. >> it's very frustrating. i don't understand the rationalization. sometimes they say it's to keep their own child safe but they are meanwhile risking the lives of several others. it's maddening. >> reporter: goodwin urges parents to be more vigilant. >> just because they survived high school and college doesn't mean that their own child will if they're not vigilant, they're not careful and there's absolutely nothing worse than attending a student funeral. >> it just hurts so bad.

200015. even after that there might be smaller projects. the redline is the first line in the system to get a major overhaul. new this morning, dominion virginia will try to catch the wind and convert it into energy. the power company is interested in building up to 400 wind turbines in the atlantic ocean off virginia beach. the obama administration is taking steps toward opening up that area for wind development. turn out the lights at a plant to keep making incandescent light bulbs. the bill was tabled. planned parenthood has hauled in donations. delia goncalves is following the story for us live in northwest washington. delia? >> reporter: the donations are pouring in they say, including $250,000 from new york's mayor

michael bloomberg. komen says this has been good for them as well. they're reporting a donation increase of 100% in just the past day. still, though, komen is indeed getting a lot of heat for its decision. we're talking hate mail, a resignation in that organization and now congress is joining in on the fight. 26 democratic senators sent a letter to komen saying in part, more than 90% of the services provided by planted parenthood are primary and preventive, including wellness exams and cancer screenings that save lives. it would be tragic if any woman, let alone thousands of women lost access to these potentially life saving screenings because of a politically motivated attack. >> regrettably this strategic shift will affect any number of long-standing partners but we have always done what is right for our organization, for our donors and volunteers. >> i think their collaboration

with planned parenthood if that's the word, whatever the connection was is one that benefited women's health and i feel sad that this decision on their part is to the detriment of women's health. >> it certainly is hurting the women across this country and that's what's so sad. women who count on this screening. >> the mammograms showed two spots and then planned parenthood stepped up and said here, go for an ultrasound. that eventually led to a needle biopsy which showed one with a cyst i didn't have to worry about and the other was a tumor. >> reporter: it is important to note this chapter here in d.c. of planned parenthood never received funding from komen. however, 19 others did. it is standing in support as you request see -- as you can see of other clinics in the area standing against this decision. now, we talked to folks over at komen who said that abortions had nothing to do with this decision. simply it is because of a new

stricter policy and they believe that this decision will actually reallocate the money and help more women, more uninsured and needy women get the services that they need. however, the president and founder could not tell us why plan the parenthood seems to be the only organization that's affected by the new policy. >> delia goncalves live in northwest washington. we'll continue to hear more about this story. a delaware man has been cited with stashing a cattle prod in his carry-on bad. security officers at bwi airport discovered that compact cattle prod tuesday. a tsa spokesman says the 61- year-old man of milton, delaware surrendered the prod and was allowed to board his flight to albany, new york. he's been cited with carrying an unauthorized weapon prohibited in the airport. 6:37. jessica doyle is back with another your money report. >> she's watching out for the latest unemployment numbers this morning. >> that's right. 8:30 we're going to find out

just how fast the economy has been creating jobs. the expectations are for 150,000 last month with the unemployment rate holding steady at 8.5%. today the president will be talking jobs. he's headed to a fire station in arlington. there he plans to unveil a new program aimed at getting veterans new jobs. it's designed to build new roads, levees and trails. the veterans job corps will spend a billion dollars and aims to put 20,000 vets back to work. spirit airlines known for low ticket prices and all the fees has a new fee. they're tacking on a new $2 charge on its tickets and saying the government made me do t. spirit calls the charge the quote, department of transportation's unintended consequences fee. it's being added to most one- way fares in response to a new government rule that allows passengers to change their mind within 24 hours of booking a trip without penalties. people seem to love home

the east as we're about a half- hour from sunrise. at 7:13. some of the wind chills are down in the 20s and temperatures will be climbing into the mid-40s by noon. northwesterly winds 5, 7, 8 miles an hour. 3:00 51. the high do about 53. by 6:00 up in the upper 40s. here are the tefers. low 30s in many of -- temps. low 30s in many of the suburbs. 37 in southern maryland. 32 fredricksburg and in washington we're 38. when you factor in the winds, well, our windchill is 31. feeling more like 24 in winchester out there. so bundle up this morning and you'll appreciate it. look at this sky here. i'm going to step out of the way. our weather camera, got that red glow in the eastern sky behind the capital dome. that's about as picture a -- that's about as pretty a picture you're going to see. the dew points are in the 20s. big storm system in colorado and nebraska. look at the rain in kansas and oklahoma. severe weather in southwestern oklahoma. one, maybe two feet of snow

across parts of eastern colorado into nebraska over the next 24 to 36 hours. that storm system is going to be pulling toward us. that may give us the chance for a little rain or maybe a little wintry mix saturday night overnight into sunday morning. chilly air is in place. it will be cooler than we have been. highs in the low 50s. plenty of sunshine through the day. tomorrow we start with sunshine. we finish with clouds and we'll watch this moisture. how much of it is going to be here versus staying south and the cold? a couple of questions but right now i think a slim chance we see a little bit of wintry weather north overnight saturday night into sunday morning. 53 today. 30s tonight. 49 tomorrow. tomorrow night, sunday morning that's when things will be wet, maybe a little wintry especially north. chilly on sunday in the mid- 40s. then we're looking at temperatures next week going into the 40s for highs. generally dry through thursday. mike, over to you. >> all right, howard. super bowl sunday is just about

here. fantastic. oh, we're here. we don't have the monitors on so i can't tell where we are. 23% of americans say that chicken wings are their favorite super bowl snack. 14% say pizza. all can be very good when it comes to the taste buds but your waistline? got to be careful. that is why we have jenny, a registered dietician. she can tell us how we cannot go so hard on our waistline this morning. >> that's exactly right. there are some tricks of the trade you can use that guests won't even notice. we'll start with lightening up. instead of in our dips and spreads and things, instead of regular sour cream, go light. that's easy. instead of regular cheese, go to the low fat or reduced fat. that's a simple thing you can do and no one will notice. if you go fat free, that's a different story so stick with the reduced or low fat. the other thing is portion sizes. don't put out two size plates. put out this size plate because that way people have to get up, go back for seconds if they need to. they get their steps in, a little activity. >> they can trigger the guilt a

little quicker too. >> studies have shown if you eat off a smaller plate, you'll actually eat less because you're filling up on fewer calories. go with the smaller plate. this is pizza. instead of ordering in for pizza, right, make individual sizes. these are -- this is actually a whole wheat nonbread and whole wheat wrap. >> they're fantastic. >> they're so g. you pop them in the oven. you put out a variety of topics so guests can make their own. you pop them in the oven for ten minutes. everybody has an individualized size pizza. guacamole and avocados have gotten a bat wrap but they're rit in -- bad wrap but they're rich in -- [indiscernible] and this nine-layer dip. all the recipes will be on your website. this is lightened up. it uses low fat greek yogurt

police have iran newman of waldorf. it's been four days since park police told occupy protesters to stop sleeping in mcpherson square. the encampment is still there and the blue tarp remains over the statue of general mcpherson. marines are saying look a to james polk elhentsry school in -- elementary school. they lad the largest number of participants in last october's healthy kids fun run. time now to answer the question of the morning. it was the average american uses three times more of this than people in other countries. is it a, toilet paper, b, cell phone minutes, or c, gasoline? >> what did i tell you? it's a, toilet paper. we won't say anymore. >> one of the reasons -- one more check of traffic and weather when we come back right here on 9news now.

one more thing before we go as we head into super bowl weekend, an interesting thing that could possibly connect d.c. to the super bowl city. peyton manning was cleared to resume his career yesterday. as you have heard, possibly coming to d.c. we also heard a rumor recently the arizona cardinals might be in the mix. >> they said it was a rehabilitative matter with peyton manning rather than his safety. so that he is good to go. but indianapolis has until march 8 to say he's good to go for them or pay $28 million in bonus money. >> he's got a good agent. weather wise, you know, we've got a good day ahead. sunshine, low 50s this afternoon. kind of chilly this morning. tomorrow night things get interesting north of town.
