5:13 pm
5:14 pm
nevada holds its presidential caucus tomorrow and today the republican candidates are fanning out all over the state still looking for possible votes. mitt romney has a 20 point lead in the polls. however, newt gingrich is not conceding anything and with unemployment and the home foreclosure rate still sky high in nevada the voters are desperate for a candidate who can bring back jobs and help them stay in their homes. joining us now live from cbs news here in d.c., the host of cbs face the nation bob

schieffer. bob, we had more good news on uemployment today. so if this keeps going, you have to think perhaps romney or the others will have to come up with another avenue of attack against the president perhaps. >> yeah. i mean from the beginning this election was going to be about jobs and the economy and every little bit the economy gets better, the better the chances of the incumbent president, barack obama. so the white house hasn't had much good news lately, derek, but this has got to be a day when they're pretty happy about all this. >> let's talk nevada for a second. we know that some of the lower tier guys, the two lower tier guys in the election, moved off from florida and decided to bet on these caucuses, but nevada is not very friendly territory for anybody but mitt romney right now. >> i think as a very large mormon population out there, i think from the beginning i think gingrich is more or less conceded -- has more or less conceded victory out there, but newt gingrich is not going

anywhere despite what a lot of people thought at the beginning of this thing. as long as there's this divide that remains in the republican party, gingrich is going to hang on. what he has to do now is hang on through february when there are these caucuses and there are no debates until you get into super tuesday and march and some of those states down south that have primaries and where he has a chance. i mean he seems very sincere about staying in this thing until the convention. he still thinks that he has a chance and i'm going to tell you, something derek. i've counted him out twice and he rose from the dead twice. so i'm not going to be the one that counts him out. >> i got to ask you about donald trump endorsing mitt romney yesterday. it was just me or is this one mitt was probably going to turn down if he could have? >> well, i don't know about that, but it was a very short ceremony, i'll say that, and i thought romney was actually pretty funny when he said there are some things that you never
5:17 pm
would have imagined and this is one of them. so i think it surprised everybody, but, you know, it's a little highlight, a little light moment in the campaign. i'm not sure how much difference it made any more than nicky haley's endorsement of romney in south carolina or herman cain's endorsement of newt gingrich in florida. these things make a nice story, but that's about it. >> very quickly, bob, our super bowl sunday face the nation? >> yes, sir. newt gingrich will be back. he's coming back on face the nation. we would love to have mitt romney, but he doesn't seem to like the sunday shows much, but we're also going to get the take of rudy giuliani who ran last time out, you'll remember, see where he thinks this race is now. is it helping or hurting the republicans as they get it ready for the fall? and we're also in our roundtable going to have michael cranidge who has written this book called the

having his third procedure in 20 months. the colts finished with the worst record in football. they'll most likely select quarterback andrew muck and bring an end to the peyton manning era. one person that thinks it's a distinct possibility manning could end up in washington is bob kravitz who covers the colts for the washington star. let's talk about some of the medical stuff and get that out of way. yesterday a report said manning was clear to play. then the colts owner said no, he's not. what's the latest? >> well, the cervical fusion has taken place and that's fine. it's stable. he's capable of playing football, but the nerve still hasn't regenerated to the point where he can be an nfl quantity he still doesn't have the strength in the right triceps that you need to be an nfl quarterback. that's not to say it won't happen as time goes on. i think he's eventually going to be healthy and he'll be available to a team, quite possibly the washington redskins who would quite

happily take him on. >> why do you believe it's a good fit? why do you believe manning would be interested in coming to the burgundy and gold? >> two reasons. first dan snyder has shown in the past he's willing to back up a wells fargo truck and secondly, i was in denver during the super bowl run of john elway and what mike shanahan was able to do was turn around john elway at the later start of his career with a great running game, great defense and the type of offense that took advantage of what john elway still had left in his tank. i think he's going to be in a similar situation with peyton manning. >> we're throwing around a lot of words a couple years ago when donovan mcnabb was on the market and they picked him up. let's talk about figures because manning is a guy that's always called his own plays and kyle shanahan is the current offensive coordinator. could there be a conflict as we get those two men coming together, both who are used to calling their own shots, so to

speak? >> i see no chance of that because if i know anything about mike shanahan it's that he's smart and he wants to continue to be employed and if you want to continue to be employed, he needs to win and the way you'd do that is by letting peyton manning do what he does best with the line of scrimmage. i have no question they would happily concede control to peyton manning if they had the rare opportunity to coach him. >> we're not talking about a high ankle sprain. we're talking about a 35-year- old guy coming off his third neck procedure in 20 months. how realistic is it that this guy will return to the peyton manning that we know that throws 35, 38 touchdowns a year? is that realistic? >> no, i don't think it's realistic. every time you have a level of cervical spine worked upon that's going to be an issue. he's going to be a diminished quarterback. the thing about peyton manning is he's not like a fastball pitcher who loses a mile and a half on his fastball and suddenly cannot be effective.
